Today Show Job Search Segment Turns Into Ad for Obama Agenda

A segment that was billed as a guide to help some of Today’s unemployed viewers find work, on Wednesday’s show, turned into a platform for the president of the liberal National Urban League to attack those who opposed the President’s plans, as he railed against those in Congress who have been filibustering extension of the unemployment benefits. Today co-anchor Matt Lauer, who hosted the segment, even prompted Morial to address how his organization was going to address the obstruction of the Democratic agenda in Congress, in the upcoming midterm elections, as he asked: “How much do you target candidates who have bad job policies…and support candidates who have good ones?” NBC’s Ann Curry, at the top of the 8:30am half hour of Today’s July 14 show, teased viewers that “Americans, on average, took about 17 weeks to find a job. Well today the number has actually doubled. It’s twice that. So the question is where should you be looking for work? We’ve got some answers this morning.” However when viewers tuned in for those answers they also got a not so veiled anti-Republican diatribe from the National Urban League’s Marc Morial as he chastised those who opposed Democratic measures. MATT LAUER: Marc, let me start with you. I mean 9.5 percent, that’s where the unemployment rate stands right now. It’s been stubborn, it’s not going down nearly fast enough and apparently this job crisis is not an equal opportunity unemployer. It’s striking minorities much harder, isn’t it? MARC MORIAL: African-Americans, the, the rate is more like 16 percent, for Latinos it’s 12 percent. There is no doubt that this recession has been tough for everyone but it’s been especially tough for communities of color. People are hurting. They’re hurting in a very significant fashion and many, many people who’ve worked their entire lives find themselves without work. The new unemployed, it’s a lavender recession. It’s white collar, blue collar, pink collar, it’s across the board, Matt, but especially tough for people of color. LAUER: When you talk about minority communities and you talk to the people in those communities, are you telling them you think the jobs are coming back or are they gone for good? MORIAL: We’re saying that steps have to be taken. And I think our message has been consistent throughout the year that it’s not gonna happen serendipitously. There’s gotta be public policy steps. There’s gotta be a concerted effort. In this nation we can’t tolerate the new normal of a nine percent unemployment rate. That’s not, that’s not acceptable. And right now Congress has been stalling, really the Senate through the use of the filibusters, been stalling an up or down vote on the extension of unemployment benefits, an expansion of the home purchase tax credit, summer jobs. LAUER: Right. MORIAL: These measures, while small, could help many, many people. Lauer then turned to Today’s financial editor Jean Chatzky who, finally, did offer the job seeking advice teased at the top of the half-hour, as she highlighted the best cities to look for new jobs. However Lauer then quickly returned to Morial who finished the segment with a pitch for the National Urban League and its efforts to help elect candidates in the midterms who will help advance the President’s agenda. LAUER: And you know Marc, let me ask you this. I mean we’re coming up to midterm elections here in a couple of months. How political does the National Urban League get with this? How much do you target candidates who have bad job policies, in your opinion, and support candidates who have good ones? MORIAL: I think we’ve got to highlight that there’s been a lot of stalling. The use of the filibuster in the Senate troubles me the most because what it’s done, it’s blocked legislation that would help the economic picture, while on the same time, the very same people who use the filibuster accuse the President and others of not doing enough. So we’ve got to highlight the fact that there’s sort of an inconsistency in that type of message. And jobs, jobs, jobs, are the most important issue we think this fall. LAUER: Marc Morial, Jean Chatzky. Folks thanks very much.

BA compensates man ‘humiliated’ over child seat policy

BBC News Mirko Fischer, his wife Stefanie and daughter Sophia Mirko Fischer said he worried what message was being sent to children BA has compensated a passenger who was “humiliated' over its policy of not allowing single male flyers to sit next to solo child travellers on its planes. British Airways cabin crew told Mirko Fischer to move after he swapped seats with his wife and ended up sitting next to a boy he did not know. Mr Fischer, 33, accused staff of harassing him and said the policy contravened the Sex Discrimination Act. BA apologised to the businessman but denied the policy was discriminatory. A spokesman told the BBC the policy was now under review. A consent order detailing a settlement between the parties was drawn up at Slough County Court on Wednesday. Mr Fischer was on a flight from London back to his home in Luxembourg on 20 April 2009 when his pregnant wife Stefanie asked him to swap seats so she could sit next to the window. He took her middle seat. Anger He claimed cabin crew told him to return to his original seat as the child next to him was an unaccompanied minor. The crew said the company's policy was not to allow adult males to sit next to unaccompanied children. But Mr Fischer said he felt he was treated as if he was a potential “child molester”. He said: “I felt humiliated and outraged. They accuse you of being some kind of child molester just because you are sitting next to someone.” Continue reading the main story We had 75,000 children fly with us last year and it is an issue we take very seriously BA spokesman BA 'victimises male passengers' Your comments Mr Fischer, who was represented by Daniel Tivadar from law firm 3 Hare Court, said there was a brief discussion and he returned to his seat but felt “embarrassed, humiliated and angry”. He complained to the airline by letter and the airline confirmed the policy, stating it related to adult males travelling alone. Mr Fischer said he was being treated differently to female passengers and therefore BA was breaking the law. He said the conversation he had with cabin crew on the flight “constituted unwanted conduct that related to his sex” and violated his dignity. He also said this consequently created an uncomfortable environment for him on the plane. He said: “There were no raised voices but we were in a public place and there were obviously people around us wondering what was happening.” BA initially defended itself and said when staff originally made the request they genuinely believed Mr Fischer was travelling alone and had no intention of embarrassing, humiliating or angering him by asking him to return to his allocated seat. Mr Fischer said he suffered “loss and damage of injury to his feelings” and had sought compensation. 'No flexibility' BA is understood to have admitted sex discrimination in Mr Fischer's case and agreed to pay

Portsmouth appoint Steve Cotterill as manager to replace Avram Grant

• Former Notts County manager takes over at relegated club • ‘Steve is the perfect fit,’ says chief executive Portsmouth have confirmed the appointment of Steve Cotterill as the club’s new manager. The 45-year-old has signed a three-year deal at the cash-strapped south coast club, who were relegated from the Premier League last season. Cotterill took charge of Notts County earlier this year and led the Magpies to the League Two title before leaving Meadow Lane at the end of the season. The Pompey chief executive, David Lampitt, welcomed Cotterill’s arrival, saying: “Steve is the perfect fit for the rebuilding job we want to do here. He’s talented, ambitious, energetic and positive, with a very good footballing CV, coming here on the back of a great achievement at Notts County. “We’ve got lots of challenges ahead and like the rest of us here at the club Steve is ready to tackle them head on to bring stability and long-term success to Pompey.” The appointment of Cotterill comes just one day after creditors voted in favour of a deal to take Portsmouth out of administration. Portsmouth’s creditors yesterday voted 81.3% in favour of a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) deal which will see non-football creditors receive only 20p for every pound they are owed. Although Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, who are owed £37m by the club, are continuing to challenge the CVA, the administrators are passing more control over to Lampitt. Cotterill began his managerial career at Sligo Rovers, before guiding his home-town team Cheltenham into the Football League in 1999. Short spells followed at Stoke and Sunderland, where he was assistant manager, before Cotterill took charge of Burnley for three years. Cotterill will be formally unveiled at a press conference at Fratton Park today. Portsmouth Championship Notts County guardian.co.uk

NFL and union officials discussed adding two games to the regular season when they met Wednesday for their first negotiating session since February. Under the proposal, the schedule would switch from four exhibition and 16 regular-season games to two and 18.

Horse racing: Win a £50 bet in our Royal Ascot tipping competition, plus the latest news and best bets on Ladies’ Day

The latest news and best bets from Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot, plus our tipping competition 1.20pm Waiting for Beckett Chris Cook: Having looked at the jockey stats earlier, it seems only fair to mention a trainer who seems to have his own struggles with Ascot. Ralph Beckett, a highly capable trainer whose strike-rate is 13% in all turf races over the past five seasons, is 0 from 34 at Ascot during that time, according to Racing Post statistics. Beckett runs Layline in today’s Britannia and Puff in the Coronation tomorrow. As I pointed out earlier, Dane O’Neill has a 2% strike-rate at this track (one win from 55 attempts). He rides Dinkum Diamond, favourite for today’s Norfolk Stakes, the first race. The horse is trained by Henry Candy, whose own Ascot strike-rate is 3%. Dinkum Diamond should have no chance on those figures. Seasoned followers of stats will be aware, however, that this probably makes him a certainty. 12.40pm The inside dope on today’s royal procession Will Hayler: So far this week, we’ve had Richard Fahey and Mark Tompkins appear in the carriages for the Royal procession, but there’s no place on Ladies’ Day for any other trainers. Instead, it’s the Crown Prince of Bahrain, Salman bin Hamad bin Isa al Khalifa, who gets to ride upfront with The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duke of York. No jokes about ‘fake sheikhs’ please. Interestingly, while the Viscount and Viscountess Grimston are allowed to ride together in the third carriage, along with Princess Eugenie, the Earl of Hopetoun gets to go in the second carriage, while the Countess is demoted to detached motor car number 7. I hope they’re all watching out for the policeman with the speed gun who tried to catch me coming out of Windsor Great Park this morning. 12.35pm Which jockeys ride Ascot well / poorly? Chris Cook: A big, galloping circuit with lots of room in the straight, Ascot looks as though it should be a straightforward ride. But races here typically demand a lot of a horse’s stamina, so you can’t make your move too early. Don’t leave it too late, though, because the home straight is shorter than many other tracks and you may not have enough time to make up the ground. After all, there’s often traffic problems as the field comes round the home turn. If you’re on the straight course, you have to find where the best ground is. All in all, there’s a lot of factors to consider for any jockey, and ample opportunity for them to show their ability, or lack thereof. So each rider’s strike-rate at Ascot must be a relevant factor for punters to consider. According to the Racing Post’s statistics, Johnny Murtagh (18%), Tom Queally (16%) and Richard Hills (16%) have the best records since 2006 of those jockeys at the course today. Both, of course, would have had many excellent horses to ride, which always helps. Ryan Moore is on a surprisingly pedestrian 11%, while Frankie Dettori is on 8%. At the other end of the table are Pat Smullen (0 wins from 26 rides since 2006), Dane O’Neill (2%), Christophe Soumillon (4%), Liam Keniry (5%) and Jimmy Quinn (5%). Some of those would have had very few winning chances in that time – but what’s Christophe’s excuse? Follow Greg Wood’s tweets from the paddock Greg Wood will be paddockside before the Norfolk Stakes (2.30) and the Gold Cup (3.50), tweeting about the state of the various runners. You can read his impressions as to their wellbeing here . 11.30am Claudio Fallisco to score today? Chris Cook: This online Brazilian nickname generator has been helping our football staff pass the time between goals during the many tedious games at the World Cup so far. It’s fun and there have been rumours that Racing For Change is going to use it to generate Brazilnames for the jockeys at Royal Ascot this week, which they will be required to wear on the back of their silks. Ryan Moore comes out as Moorson, which seems appropriate for the son of a fine trainer. Boringly, Johnny Murtagh becomes Murta and Hayley Turner is a predictable Turnio, but Frankie Dettori produces the excellent Dettorandro, while Kieren Fallon is a frankly thrilling Claudio Fallisco. Will Hayler previews day three I start the third day of the Royal meeting content in the knowledge that a pound on every one of my selections so far this week would have yielded an astonishing profit of a penny. Not bad, eh? That means if you’d have had a modest £1,000 on each one, you’d be a whole tenner up. And you can buy a lot with a tenner. Not that I’m particularly confident about sending profits rocketing any further upwards on today’s card, given that it looks fiendishly tough stuff. You could have 10 goes in the Britannia and still get nothing in the first four, although if yesterday’s bias towards high-drawn horses is repeated that will at least help to narrow options down. Despite watering overnight, the going stick readings are just as quick as yesterday (stands’ side 9.9, centre 9.8, far side 10.0) and the official going is ‘good to firm, good in places’. Ask (3.50) has been my selection for the Gold Cup since before the start of the season. He is a high-quality performer, who definitely stays two miles and who, we are led to believe, is fully over whatever problems were holding him up earlier this season. Manifest was impressive in the Yorkshire Cup and, having been down to as low as 9-4 last week, he has drifted back out to a more-backable 4-1 this morning. But Ask did the job just as effectively in last year’s Yorkshire Cup and I just can’t oppose him because: a) I’d fancy him to win a match race against Manifest over a mile and a half, and b) Ask looks just as likely to stay today’s trip. The only other bet I have placed so far today is on London Stripe (5.35) , despite a disappointing wide draw in the King George V Handicap – a race his trainer, Sir Michael Stoute, loves to target. He is said to be one of Ryan Moore’s very favourite horses in the stable and is likely to take the beating. You can read my preview of today’s TV races here . Win a £50 free bet from Paddy Power Paddy Power have very kindly offered a £50 free bet to our champion tipster today. All you have to do is give us your selections for all of today’s races at Royal Ascot. Please post all your tips in a single posting, using the comment facility below, before the first race at 2.30pm. There are six races at Ascot today and you must post a single selection for each race. Our usual terms and conditions, which you can read here , will apply, except that this will be a strictly one-day thing.
