John Legend, The Roots Motivate Masses At NYC Show

Common, Jennifer Hudson, Estelle, Melanie Fiona join collective for ‘Unstaged’ concert steeped in soul at Terminal 5. By Jayson Rodriguez John Legend Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Over the course of his solo career, John Legend has proven to be as refined a singer as any of his R&B contemporaries, from Maxwell to Usher. But with his new collaborative effort with the Roots, Wake Up!, the velvety-smooth Legend showcases more gruff vocals amid the set’s 1960s and ’70s soul-drenched motivational music. On Thursday night, John Legend’s full range was on display as he worked through his repertoire alongside Philadelphia’s finest at Manhattan’s Terminal 5. The show was the latest installment in American Express’ Unstaged concert series, this one filmed by Spike Lee. The collective marched out onto the stage in New Orleans “second line”-style and settled themselves in front of the backdrop, a massive replica of the Wake Up! album cover, which features Legend and the Roots in animated form performing on a non-descript block. Legend dashed through his hits, from the pulsating “Green Light” to the crowd-pleasing “Ordinary People.” Estelle joined the festivities, subbing for Erykah Badu on the Roots’ “You Got Me.” Common and newcomer Melanie Fiona helped Legend bring the crowd to full-on screams with their current single “Wake Up Everybody.” The Chicago MC was spry on stage, moving from side to side as he recited his lyrics. “It’s the God hour, the morning I wake up,” Com rapped. “Just for the breath of life, I thank my maker/ My mom say I come from hustlers and shakers/ My mom built it on skyscrapers and acres.” Just when things were heating up, however, Legend pulled the plug an hour into the set, thanking the audience for coming out and quickly exiting to the backstage area. … Moments later, though, the smooth crooner reappeared onstage and his encore drew even louder cheers. An elegant Jennifer Hudson appeared join Legend for a duet, rocking the capacity crowd with her stunning vocals, which were as beautiful as she looked. Legend closed out the show with “Shine,” a number from Wake Up! that also serves as the lead single to for the documentary “Waiting for Superman,” which opened Friday (September 24). “They wait to plead their case, unknown cast aside,” he sang on the moving track. “I love to see their face, can we spare the light/ Are we afraid to see the prisoners of yesterday?/ These beautiful minds, trapped inside/ Bring them back to life, let them shine.” What do you think of Legend and the Roots’ new album? John Legend, The Roots Talk ‘Powerful’ Wake Up! LP

‘He really, really exercised … the rawness,’ drummer ?uestlove says of pushing soul singer on upcoming joint collection. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts John Legend and ?uestlove Photo: MTV News John Legend and the Roots hooking up for a collaborative project hardly seems like a stretch. For one, the two acts have past works steeped in soul music, from John’s solo efforts to the band’s work with artists like Erykah Badu and D’Angelo. But according to Legend, their new album, Wake Up!, was anything but a gimme. The LP is a collection of vintage cover tracks with a few contemporary edits, and the singer admitted the studio sessions forced him, in a pivotal way, to stretch beyond his comfort zone. “I think this album is bold and it’s different than anything that I’ve done but I don’t think people will think it’s out of my sphere of what I do, because it’s very soulful,” Legend told MTV News. “It incorporates gospel, it incorporates hip-hop, funk, reggae; it’s very classic. It’s inspired by music from the ’60s and ’70s, all these are things you would expect me to do. And all these are things you would think the Roots are a phenomenal band and production team to do it with, and so it works really well in that regard. I think it will feel very powerful to Roots fans, John Legend fans, and all of the above people who haven’t listened to us before, because the collaboration felt very natural, it felt very right.” Although both John Legend and the Roots share a connection that stems from their Philadelphia backgrounds — the singer attended college in the area and the bandmembers hail from the city — joining forces wasn’t a simple process. Roots drummer Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson said he’s selective about who he works with, limiting the list to a few veterans. But Legend, he said, shares a common palette when it comes to musical tastes. “As far as doing a full-fledged record with a singer, a lot of times I shy away from singers because a lot of them don’t have the seasoning and the reference points that I look for when I do work with particular singers,” ?uestlove explained, citing his ’70s-era soul music influences. “So it was fun working with John,” he added. “John is a double-edged sword: He has a velvety smooth voice, but here, he really, really exercised — much to my delight and much to his chagrin — the rawness.” What do you think of John Legend and the Roots coming together for an album? Kanye West Surprises New York With Secret Black-Tie Show

John Legend joins Yeezy for glitzy, 90-minute performance held for select few recipients of late-night email invite. By Shaheem Reid Kanye West performs in New York on Thursday Photo: Whitney-Gayle Benta/ MTV News NEW YORK — The self-proclaimed “world’s greatest entertainer,” Doug E. Fresh long ago tagged his cohorts with the name the “Get Fresh Crew.” The partygoers who came out to for Kanye West’s secret/ super-late party at Rosewood in Manhattan could have easily been given that title too. An e-mail went out to a select group late Thursday evening, alerting recipients that West and John Legend would be holding a function. If not quite a black-tie affair, the invite asked guests to be suited and booted. No exceptions. Also noted in the message was a phone number to call to learn the address of the venue, which was Manhattan’s Chrystie Street club, the Box. The stage set-up was pretty simple: a baby grand piano at which Legend sat, two microphones (one just for Auto-Tune), an 808 beat machine and a keyboard. With just a little more than 200 in attendance, seeing Kanye and Legend together in such an intimate setting conjured up memories of the 2001/2002 era when the two would gig at various underground clubs. Kanye was, in a word, dynamic. The Chicago MC has created three classic LPs (his rap-heavy first three) and amassed more than a dozen Grammy Awards in the decade or so since we first saw him at those clubs. West returned to the small stage on Thursday as if it were his alma mater. A great showman, Yeezy put on a genre-blurring, mesmerizing show. It was technically Friday (August 13) morning already when West and Legend took the stage to begin performing (around 1:30 a.m.), at the function he dubbed “Rosewood.” Although a Kanye show is typically well-thought out and carefully crafted, Kanye seemed to have no weight on his shoulders last night. He wasn’t afraid to flub lines, nor to tell the audience when he did. He read lyrics from a sheet of paper for when he launched into a cover song. So what. It was 90 minutes of amazing. Standing at the mic, Kanye kicked off his set with “Homecoming”; Legend sang the hook. Both performers were suited up, dressed in ensembles worthy of an awards show red carpet. West told John to take it back to old times and that led into “Heard ‘Em Say.” Later, Legend began slowly stroking the keys and singing “If This World Were Mine.” This segued into the music speeding up before Kanye performed a verse from the song he produced for Teflon Don Rick Ross, “Live Fast, Die Young.” After the rapping, ‘Ye hopped on the on drum machine while John continued on piano, where a bottle of wine and a glass were set aside for Kanye. There were brilliant moments of improv like when Kanye started performing his “Pinocchio Story,” which hasn’t been officially released, or when Legend started singing the Rihanna vocal riffs from “Run This Town.” Kanye has been making a series of surprise appearances recently. The Roots And John Legend’s Wake Up! Track List Revealed

Tracks from Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway will be covered on the upcoming album. By Mawuse Ziegbe The Roots and John Legend Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images The Roots and John Legend will revive a host of soulful songs on their upcoming collection of covers, Wake Up!, which is due in stores in September. The track list — which was revealed by Rap-Up.com on Monday (July 12) — includes 11 songs, and Chicago MC Common and Grammy-nominated songstress Melanie Fiona make appearances on the album. Wake Up! revisits songs such as “Little Ghetto Boy” by Donny Hathaway, “Wholy Holy” by Marvin Gaye and “Hard Times” by Baby Huey and the Babysitters. Although the album is a collection of vintage tracks, Legend said the timeless lyricism has a contemporary appeal. “These songs sound so relevant now,” Legend said in a statement. “On most of them, you wouldn’t change a lyric. ‘Wake Up Everybody’ (the album’s first single, featuring contributions from Melanie Fiona and Common) has four verses — the first one is a general statement, the second is about education, third is about health care, and the fourth is about making a better environment. No editing needed.” Roots drummer ?uestlove and Legend also recently spoke to MTV News about their cover of Ernie Hines’ “Our Generation” and its connection to a classic hip-hop track. ” ‘Straighten It Out’ [by] Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth was an important hip-hop record and it sampled ‘Our Generation,’ ” Legend said. On Wake Up! , Legend said he and the Philly collective strived to spotlight songs that could be incorporated into a hip-hop record. “A lot of what we did was try to bring songs that have been sampled or should be sampled or sample-able to make the album,” he said. Legend also said that another upside of working on the album with the group he has been following since college is having access to ?uest’s extensive musical knowledge. “He just knows a lot of great records,” Legend said. “When you’re thinking about putting an album together of songs that were performed [more than] 40 to 50 years ago, he’s one of the best people to talk about that with.” The Roots and John Legend’s “Wake Up!” track list, according to Rap-Up.com: 1. “Compared to What” 2. “Hard Times” 3. “Little Ghetto Boy” 4. “Wake Up Everybody” (featuring Common and Melanie Fiona) 5. “Our Generation” 6. “Love the Way It Should Be” 7. “Hang On in There” 8. “I Can’t Write Left Handed” 9. “Wholy Holy” 10. “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free” 11. “Shine” Are you looking forward to Legend and the Roots’ joint album? Fefe Dobson Haunts Her Ex In ‘Ghost’ Video — Watch It Here!

The rocker says that she is trying to make her forthcoming full-length Joy a ‘perfect’ album. By Mawuse Ziegbe Fefe Dobson in “Ghost” Photo: Universal Music Canada Fefe Dobson’s latest video has a very clear message: If you cheat, your ex will make your life miserable. In “Ghost,” the rocker sticks up for scorned girlfriends everywhere as she harasses her ex after catching him with another lady. True to the song’s title, Dobson haunts her bad-boy boo, popping up everywhere from the ceiling of his bedroom to the front seat of his ride. “Ghost” was directed by Alan Ferguson, who has shot videos for the likes of Katy Perry and Fall Out Boy. Dobson gushed to MTV News that the director is “unbelievable and super talented” and that she had wanted to work with him for a while. The two were apparently completely in sync when it came to certain scenes in the video — like the one where she’s haranguing her ex from above. “Alan Ferguson called me and we were talking about it on the phone. I was like, ‘I see myself upside down.’ And he was like, ‘That’s crazy, ’cause I saw you upside down in my head too,’ ” Dobson said. Dobson also said the heat really got turned up when she filmed in front a blazing mattress . “There’s a scene where I’m standing in front of a burning bed. It was really burning — it wasn’t a green screen. I was like, ‘I’m not gonna do this!’ and I hear [the director] going, ‘Get in front of the bed!’ “she recalled. “I didn’t want to do it but I did it. I didn’t, you know, get set on fire — which is important!” Dobson hasn’t dropped an album since her self-titled 2003 debut. She chalked up the break to the fact that she spent the last few years making sure that her latest effort, Joy , is just right. “It took so long because I wanted to make it perfect,” said Dobson. “I’m one of those people that I make a song … then I write another song and then I’m like, ‘But this song is so much better than this song,’ and then I kind of ditch that song. It’s a long process.” What do you think of Fefe Dobson’s “Ghost” video? Let us know in the comments below! Related Videos MTV News First: Fefe Dobson

John Legend, The Roots Talk Levi’s Pioneer Recording Sessions

Collaborators covered soul song ‘Our Generation,’ after hearing it sampled on classic ’90s Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth track. By Steven Roberts John Legend Photo: MTV News Ernie Hines probably isn’t the first name that comes to mind when you think of soul singers. But the Mississippi singer/guitarist’s “Our Generation” was John Legend and the Roots’ choice when it was their turn to cover a song for the Levi’s Pioneer Sessions project. Legend and the Roots, who were already working on an album of covers, Wake Up!, were quick to come onboard when Levi’s called. Legend acknowledged the song was relatively obscure, but said he thought fans would recognize it from a famous hip-hop sample. ” ‘Straighten It Out’ [by] Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth was an important hip-hop record and it sampled ‘Our Generation,’ ” Legend said. The R&B crooner went on to explain that as he and the Philly band were putting his album together, they wanted a sound that was both hip-hop and soul. “A lot of what we did was try to bring songs that have been sampled or should be sampled or sample-able to make the album,” Legend continued. “It just makes sense to do the song [for Levi’s].” Covering a song previously sampled on a ’90s rap song — in this case, one off the hip-hop duo’s classic 1992 LP, Mecca and the Soul Brother — makes sense for two acts known for playing to more mature audiences, Roots drummer ?uestlove said. “People might not know ‘Our Generation,’ but there’s definitely people in their mid-30s that know Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth ‘Straighten It Out.’ And it will also hit people that knew the original ‘Our Generation,’ that are now 50 years old,” ?uest added. The Levi’s 2010 Revival Recordings series asks musicians to choose songs that were not only influential in their careers but also proved to be part of music history. Legend and the Roots decided to bring MC C.L. Smooth into the booth with them, and they all agree it was worth the effort. The singer said he was excited to collaborate with Smooth, but also the Roots drummer; some interesting, unexpected sounds emerged. “One of the coolest things about working with Ahmir [‘?uestlove’ Thompson] is his encyclopedic knowledge of music,” Legend said. “He just knows a lot of great records. When you’re thinking about putting an album together of songs that were performed [more than] 40 to 50 years ago, he’s one of the best people to talk about that with.” The album Wake Up! is due for a September release, and the Ernie Hines cover is available for free download at the Levi’s Pioneer Sessions website.
