A letter from a dad to his gay son – who he overheard saying he planned to come out to his parents – has gone viral this week due to its simple, hopeful message. Writes Nate’s dad: “I overheard your phone conversation with Mike last night about your plans to come out to me. The only thing I need you to plan is to bring home OJ and bread after class.” “We are out, like you now. I’ve known you were gay since you were six, I’ve loved you since you were born. Dad. PS Your mom and I think you and Mike make a cute couple.” The letter was posted by FCKH8 (dot) com, a group dedicated to empowering youth through gay-positive, often snarky apparel, photos and videos. “We get a lot of crazy stuff, so I almost didn’t look at it,” FCKH8 founder Luke Montgomery told Yahoo! Shine , but when he did read it, he said, “I cried.” He said Nate, a high school student in Michigan, sent the letter. Nate and his family did not want to share any information besides the letter itself, but the four sentences alone have been enough to inspire plenty. “It’s actually sad so many people are excited,” Mongtomery said. “And what I think that says is, one, it’s rare, and that’s really bad,” however, on the positive side, “a lot of people are really craving this kind of reaction.” “It’s what I want,” he explained. “It’s what everyone wants.” The national organization Parents and Families of Lesbian and Gays (PFLAG) also saw the letter and loved it, calling it “what PFLAG is all about.” Just don’t forget the OJ and bread please, Nate. Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez , has died, Vice President Nicolás Maduro announced in a televised statement. Hugo Chavez Has Died Via Reuters : Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has died after a two-year battle with cancer, ending the socialist leader’s 14-year rule of the South American country, Vice President Nicolas Maduro said in a televised speech. The flamboyant 58-year-old leader had undergone four operations in Cuba for a cancer that was first detected in his pelvic region in mid-2011. His last surgery was on December 11 and he had not been seen in public since. “It’s a moment of deep pain,” Maduro, accompanied by senior ministers, said, his voice choking. Chavez easily won a new 6-year term at an election in October and his death will devastate millions of supporters who adored his charismatic style, anti-U.S. rhetoric and oil-financed policies that brought subsidized food and free health clinics to long-neglected slums. Detractors, however, saw his one-man style, gleeful nationalizations and often harsh treatment of opponents as evidence of an egotistical dictator whose misplaced statist economics wasted a historic bonanza of oil revenues. Chavez’s death paves the way for a new election that will test whether his socialist “revolution” can live on without his dominant personality at the helm. Now a pack of “Little Monsters” are petitioning the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), requesting that Madonna not be allowed to present Anderson Cooper with the prestigious Vito Russo Award at the March 16 ceremony in New York. Deeming GLAAD’s decision to tap the Material Girl “an insult to a true gay rights activist like Lady Gaga,” the Gaga fan blog Little Monster Artpop make an even more heinous suggestion, labeling Madge “one of the major reasons for AIDS.” “Back in the 1980′s, she encouraged gay men to have unprotected sex,” they write. “While she certainly didn’t start the disease, she and her lack of morals helped it spread.” If GLAAD officials don’t rethink their choice of having Madonna as a presenter, the group has vowed to “strike back” in an unspecified way in their letter. The post seems to ignore the fact that Madonna has always been a major supporter of HIV/AIDS research, even dedicating proceeds from numerous concerts to AIDS-related charities since the mid-1980s.
