For Karrueche, 24, it’s plain old desperation: “Karrueche has no carreer and no money, and she is desperate to hand on to Chris,” says the source. “Without him, she’s a broke nobody. If getting pregnant is what it takes to keep him, so be it.” For RiRi, also 24, her motication seems to be pure brinkmanship. “She says Chris is the only man she has ever loved and that she always planned on having kids with him somedaym” says the informant. “She’s willing to make that happen a lot sooner if it gets karrueche out of his life. The Summer is over and it’s just about that time to take a look back on all of the excellent music that has dropped in 2012. Since the lines of mixtapes and albums have become so blurred with so much effort going into free music, why separate them? It wasn’t easy, but Hip-Hop Wired has broken down the top 25 albums and mixtapes this year so far in this week’s edition of Wired 25. Continue
If you didn’t believe it before..we’ve got proof now. Mitt …you’ve got some explaining to do. To uncover the true story behind the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s $10 million bailout of Mitt Romney and Bain & Company, Rolling Stone made a Freedom of Information Act request that forced the FDIC to release more than 500 of pages of records. (The government, which was owed more than $30 million in all, had become a creditor to Bain when it took over the failed Bank of New England in early 1991.) Prior to releasing the documents, the FDIC allowed Bain & Company to scour and redact the records. Dozens of pages were blacked out entirely, on Bain’s claim that these nearly two-decade-old records contain secret “commercial or financial information.” Most pages looked something like the image at left. After Romney took over and a ‘recovery’ was put in action…it began to fail. Bain’s revenues continued to decline, and the company was soon bleeding red ink. By March 1992 — barely nine months after the initial restructuring — Romney was hitting up the government and Bain’s other creditors for a bailout, asking that the firm be allowed to repay its debts at just 35 cents on the dollar. The documents reveal that Romney had perverse leverage: The terms of the 1991 deal gave Bain the authority to reward its executives with massive bonuses, regardless of performance. If creditors refused to allow the firm to pay down its debt at a fraction of the legal value, in other words, Romney could begin to loot the firm’s cash reserves by doling out unmerited bonus pay. Mitt…it’s time for you to come forward, release your taxes, and show us all…for once, that you’re as shady as they come. Source Images via WENN
Karl Urban makes his debut as the helmeted arbiter of justice in the first official trailer for ‘Dredd,’ in theaters September 21. By Josh Wigler A scene from “Dredd” Photo: He says he’s the law — but do you believe him? Longtime “Judge Dredd” fans (heck, anyone old enough to have seen an R-rated movie in the 1990s) have plenty of reasons to be skeptical about “Dredd,” the Pete Travis-directed adaptation of the “2000 AD” comic book, judging purely on how the Sylvester Stallone film of 1995 was handled. By all accounts, “Dredd” is not that film. It takes its inspiration from sources much closer to the original text and has a leading man — Karl Urban — who takes his job very seriously. So did the “Dredd” trailer do it for you? It did it for us … mostly. Here are five key elements from the “Dredd” trailer that informed our verdict. Welcome to Mega City One (at 00:05) Gritty, impossibly huge and absolutely the last place on the planet you would ever want to live: that’s Mega City One, and from the opening moments of the trailer, all of those points are clearly established. Hooligans run amok fueled by all kinds of illicit drugs, with one in particular gaining new traction: Slo-Mo, a dangerous product that “makes the brain feel as though time is passing at 1 percent of the normal speed.” Why anyone would want to be on such a drug in the middle of Mega City One is beyond us, but it’s certain to pave the way for some fantastic action, based on the trailer alone. Big Ma-Ma’s House (at 00:32) A hero is only as worthy as his villain, and in the case of “Dredd,” the quality of the nemesis won’t be a problem. Lena Headey of “Game of Thrones” fame is the bad guy here as Ma-Ma Madrigal, ruling the roost of a drug empire with enough ruthless efficiency to make Queen Cersei Lannister blush. Her scarred visage and crystal-clear goals — “If we play this right, we can take the whole city,” she tells her underlings — make her a force to be reckoned with, and Headey seems to be having a ball in the role. Judge and Be Judged (at 00:59) We’ll get to Urban specifically in a second. In the meantime, look at all of the judges! Dredd explains their role in Mega City One thusly: “800 million people living in the ruin of the old world, and only one thing fighting for order in the chaos: the men and women of the Hall of Justice.” Though “Dredd” will center mostly on the titular judge and his new trainee Cassandra Anderson (played by a bleach-blond Olivia Thirlby), it’s nice to see some attention paid to the greater gaggle of law enforcers. Fifty Shades of “Raid” (at 01:19) If you thought the plot of “Dredd” seemed a little familiar after watching the trailer, you’re not losing it. There are undeniable similarities between this and “The Raid,” the incredible Indonesian martial arts film from Gareth Evans that debuted this past spring. Ma-Ma Madrigal has her drug operation holed up in one massive tower that she has full control over, not unlike “The Raid” drug kingpin Tama. Also not unlike Tama, Madrigal commands all the tenants of her building to seek and destroy Dredd and Anderson. So, yes, the similarities are there, but there are more than enough differences in the setting, genre and characters — not to mention the action-dictating Slo-Mo — that we’re more than happy to look the other way. (Besides, we’ll take another “Raid” movie however we can get it, even if it’s called “Dredd.”) Is He the Law? (at 01:50) That’s the big question, isn’t it? On paper, Karl Urban is a fantastic choice for Judge Dredd. In motion? That might be another story. His Dredd spits out a few too many one-liners for some folks’ tastes — “negotiations are over,” “the sentence is death,” etc. — but he’s got the look, the voice and the attitude down by our estimation. Whether or not that all adds up to a fully formed Dredd remains to be seen, but the trailer leaves us cautiously optimistic, if not fully sold, on Urban’s performance. “Dredd” is set to hit theaters on September 21. Justin Bieber and Justin Timberlake have more in common than a first name, but how do their solo careers stack up? By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber vs. Justin Timberlake Photo: It’s hard to remember now, but there was a time a decade ago when Justin Timberlake elicited the same kind of screaming mobs of young girls that Justin Bieber does now. But these two pop icons have way more in common than just the same first name and the undying devotion of the ladies. Both have conquered the pop music universe in a massive way, sold millions of albums and helped fundamentally change what is considered appropriate material for young male singers. “I think .. the comparison is a huge honor,” Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, told MTV News about the numerous reviews comparing Bieber’s evolution and sound to Timberlake’s. “That is an iconic artist and someone who, when I was growing up, really set the tone for stars the same way Justin Bieber is for his generation … A compliment of that nature is something that we embrace, but at the same time I think it’s the easy comparison. I like to say things no one else will say: They’re both white and both their names are Justin. That’s the thing that everyone thinks but they won’t say out loud. And I think the two of them feel that way.” To celebrate the release this week of Bieber’s second full-length album, Believe, we thought we’d take a look at how the Justins’ careers stack up against each other. Sales : Though he’s only released two solo albums in his 10-year career outside of ‘NSYNC, Timberlake has hit it big both times, moving more than 10 million units of 2002’s Grammy-winning Justified and an equal number for 2006’s FutureSex/LoveSounds . Bieber busted out of the box in 2009 with the EP My World , which sold 3.2 million copies in the U.S. He followed with another EP, My World 2.0, which sold another 3.1 million copies in the U.S. His Christmas disc, Under the Mistletoe moved around 1.5 million and total world sales have put him in the 15 million range. But, given that Timberlake is semi-retired from music and Believe is expected to be one of the year’s best sellers, it won’t be long before the student should overtake the master. Advantage : Timberlake (for now) Social Media : Timberlake may have Bieber on sales at the moment, but nobody has leveraged social media more than the kid who got discovered on YouTube. Bieber’s social media numbers are gawdy: 23.6 million Twitter followers, 44.5 million Facebook likes, more than 2.9 billion YouTube views, including nearly 750 million for the video for his breakthrough single, “Baby” and another 321 million for “Never Say Never.” By contrast, Timberlake has staked out a smaller social media presence, amassing 12 million followers on Twitter, 16.1 million likes on Facebook and nearly 240 million YouTube views of his videos. Advantage : Bieber Big-Screen Success : Bieber’s concert movie, “Never Say Never,” has taken its place as the highest-grossing concert movie of all-time with more than $73 million to date. While Bieber is expanding his movie palette with an upcoming debut dramatic role in a Mark Wahlberg basketball movie, Timberlake has already blazed a formidable trail in acting, which has become his primary focus. Counting animated films featuring his voice and such hits as “The Social Network” ($96 million), “Bad Teacher” ($100 million) and “Yogi Bear” ($100 million), Timberlake’s films have grossed nearly $450 million to date. Advantage : Timberlake Expanding the Brand : While neither Justin has gone all-in on merchandising their name like some other pop stars (50 Cent, Jennifer Lopez), both have extended their brands in interesting ways. Bieber has released two perfumes (Girlfriend and Someday), a line of nail polish, a doll and a book. Timberland has a successful clothing line (William Rast), scents for men and women (Play for Him and Play for Her) a record label (Tennman Records), a golf course in his hometown of Memphis (Mirimichi), restaurant (Southern Hospitality) and a line of tequila (901). Advantage : Timberlake Precociousness : Sure, Timberlake got there first thanks to his time on the Mickey Mouse Club and in ‘NSYNC, but he was an ancient 21 years old when he released his solo debut. Bieber is just 18 and is already on his fourth release, with a movie, books, several sold-out world tours under his belt and, like, Timberlake (Britney Spears), a very public romance with a fellow pop star (Selena Gomez). The comparisons will keep coming, but at the torrid pace he’s moving, Bieber is well on his way to eclipsing Timberlake by the time he’s old enough to drink. Your move, T. The actual argument Obama made about Mitt’s role at Bain is a fairly sound one on the merits: the role of a President bears no resemblance to the role of a business leader, particularly a private equity or leveraged buyout specialist. One should have a concern on how to create jobs and the other has what amounts to a fiduciary duty to create profit. And those simply aren’t always compatible. Pilar Sanders Speaks On Deion Sanders Divorce And Domestic Abuse Tanya Young Williams (yes from BBWs and Jayson Williams) interviewed Pilar Sanders on her troubled marriage with Deion Sanders . Despite Prime Time’s denial of any physical/domestic abuse, Pilar says otherwise… Q: You’ve stated that Deion has abused you in the past. In what ways? A: Many ways. Financially it started before Christmas and continues until today. He just stopped providing for the family. He cut credit cards. He cut financial support … No resources at all, whatsoever. Even when we’re still in the house, my daughter would beg for clothes, he wouldn’t buy her any clothes. It would come to a point where she would say, dad will you get me a sandwich from Subway and he would be like, no – that’s a five dollar sandwich. He would tell her go ask your mommy. What he would try to do was use every piece of leverage he could ever get a hold of and try to use against me and try to turn the children against me. So what he was telling the kids was that basically, if you stay with me I can provide for you, your mother doesn’t have money, you’re not going to be able to get clothes, you wont be able to get food, who knows what type of place you will be at, but here, you will have everything you need and want. Q: Has there been physical abuse from him in the past? A: Yes, there has on more than one occasion. And he’s done it in front of people. He did it in front of two of our producers on our show, Primetime Love … It’s so idiotic and its funny and its not funny. During the shooting of it, I have a very light personality, with that, there were a lot of parts that were just naturally funny and it just kinda happened. So he called shooting down and he called a meeting with myself and two producers from Los Angeles and we went to our back room where the sitting area is – he said “there has to be a good cop and a bad cop and there is only one comedian here and the comedian is me.” I just started laughing and said, “Oh my God you are ridiculous” and I say, “I can’t help it if I’m funnier than you”. Then he leaped across the table and grabbed my neck and squeezed it to the point that I thought that he poked a hole in my trachea. The two producers didn’t know what to do. They couldn’t get him off of me. They couldn’t do anything so I started kicking him in his groin. That’s the only thing that got him off of me … There were other times when he grabbed me and ripped jewelry … When he was verbally abusive, I didn’t recognize it as abuse. I took his nasty behavior as his personality, I just thought he was a really mean jerk. He was just rude to people because he’s rude to a lot more people than me. More on the divorce and his alleged 19-year-old jumpoff…
