‘Mudbound’ Dares To Explore the Often Silenced Topic of Black Male PTSD

Source: Nicholas Hunt / Getty) Writer/director Dee Rees has been anything but predictable. She became a household name in 2011 with her first feature-length film Pariah , a gutting coming-of-age narrative about a young woman grappling with her sexuality. Then she turned around and took the small screen by storm with the triumphant story of iconic blues singer Bessie Smith in Bessie —which racked up more than one million viewers in its premiere. She even managed to helm a few documentary films and grace the director’s chair of the hit FOX series Empire in between projects. But even though her projects run the gamut, there is one recognizable theme that connects each of them, something we rarely see from other filmmakers. Rees boldly dismantles our most uncomfortable truths and interrogates why they remain hidden. Her latest drama, Mudbound , is no different. Set along an indistinct American South after World War II, the movie tells the story of a black family and a white family, whose disparate vantage points illuminate a racist society that has affected them both in deeply profound ways. They’re given equal agency and layers, and are written with the same level of compassion that seeps through each of the performances. So much so that the question is no longer about who is oppressed and who is the oppressor. It presents a more complex narrative that explores the effects of war across racial lines—through these two families whose steadfast hope is destroyed once they’re shown how little their world has changed when their loved ones return from battle and are unable to navigate the harsh realities they once could. The story opens with the McAllan family, Laura (Carey Mulligan) and Henry (Jason Clarke), a young couple who have recently arrived from Memphis with dreams of more land and a better life for his growing family. But as soon as they get there, with his spiteful father Pappy (Jonathan Banks) in tow, both husband and wife learn that they haven’t moved any further away from struggle. They have to get the house out of the clutches of the swindler they bought it from; their once promising land is actually infertile; and Laura is stuck in a house with a dutiful yet loveless man and his oppressive father. They can only anticipate that the return of Henry’s brother, Jamie (Garrett Hedlund), and the conclusion of the war, will help them realize a new reality for themselves. Just miles down the road is the Jackson family, headed by Florence and Hap (Mary J. Blige and Rob Morgan). They’re sharecroppers on the McAllan land who become the white family’s natural default for any extra support they need—for the land or otherwise. Florence takes care of the little McAllan kids when they get whopping cough. Hap has to help out with labor on the land. And their young boys are often beckoned for additional sets of hands. But they have their own aspirations to consider, keeping a happy home in the midst of racial hierarchal, buying their own property, and paving the way for their children to have a freer life than they have. Inversely from the McAllans, their struggle is dictated by everything and everyone around them, and their home is filled with joy and the security of love. So when their oldest son Ronsel (Jason Mitchell) goes off to fight in the war, they are comforted by the hope they’ve instilled in his heart, and that he’ll come back to a more possible future for himself. The core of the film is what happens when both men return home to a society that has remained remarkably stagnant, and try to navigate the overwhelming desire to be the face of change in a world that wants anything but. Rees, along with the heartbreaking performances of Hedlund and Mitchell, delivers a searing portrayal of post-traumatic stress in a society that failed (and still fails) to acknowledge. The sleepless nights, the alarming recognition that despite the lives they saw wasted on the battlefield—their own just merely escaping—they are still an N-word and a white drifter; a man who can’t even walk through the front door of an establishment without putting his life at risk and the other who tries to drink the memories of war out of his mind every day. Rarely in the black community do we see images of mental health, and even more rarely do we see it in male characters, who are more often portrayed like Hap—who’d rather walk around on a broken leg than have his wife take his place out in the field. It’s the film’s audacity to portray black male vulnerability especially in a historical context that admonished it which makes Mudbound that much more impactful. That and how director/co-writer Rees refuses to back down on present either family’s narrative as a deficit to the other—despite how easy it would have been to do so. Compelling, heartbreaking, and bold, Mudbound is an absolute must-see. Selena Gomez: Demi Lovato is SO Brave! I Love Her!

Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato were both Barney actresses before becoming Disney stars as teens. Since then, though, their lives have taken down different paths — each with their own claims to fame, their own successes, and their own struggles. Demi recently shared a lot about herself in a documentary, showing how far she’s come but revealing that she still has a ways to go. And who spoke up to praise her for her honesty and bravery but Selena Gomez. Selena Gomez revealed her Lupus diagnosis back in 2015. The illness, which was constantly mentioned on House back in that medical drama’s heyday, involves Selena’s own autoimmune system attacking her healthy organs, perceiving them as intruders. Despite modern medicine, Lupus can still be deadly. Even with drastic treatments, including chemotherapy, Lupus has taken its toll on Selena Gomez, forcing her to undergo a kidney transplant in secret earlier this year.  It was actually her friend, Francia Raisa, who donated her kidney to Selena in a life-saving display of friendship and generosity.  Selena’s ongoing battle with Lupus has forced her to take multiple extended breaks from her career as an actress and from being one of the greatest singers on the face of the Earth. Honestly, as wonderful as it is that she was able to receive a kidney transplant, that’s not a cure. It’s a short-term solution for one particular problem. Some people are genuinely afraid that Lupus will claim Selena’s life. Demi Lovato has had more than her share of struggles too, however. In fact, Demi recently shared before and after eating disorder photos , highlighting her dramatic transition into being and feeling so much healthier. She’s also spoken at length about mental health — about bipolar disorder and especially about the debilitating effects of depression. Contrary to what some people might suggest, just because Demi’s illnesses are psychological doesn’t make them her fault. And it doesn’t make them somehow more deserved than Selena’s Lupus or anyone’s anything. Demi shared bits of her life and struggles in her documentary, Simply Complicated . But Demi also talks about how much personal progress she’s made. Demi promoted her documentary, which is on YouTube, via Instagram. Selena Gomez left an Instagram comment for all to see. “This was beautiful. I’m so happy for you.” Recently, Demi’s life has been full of many good things for her to celebrate. Selena’s praise continues: “You always continue to [be] bold and real. I wish more people were like you. Love you.” That is so wholesome. The world really would be a better place if more people were like Demi Lovato. Or like Selena. In the documentary, Demi speaks directly about her continuing battle with her eating disorder. “When I feel lonely, my heart feels hungry and then I end up binging and I don’t know how to figure out how to be alone.” A lot of people eat emotionally, even when they aren’t hungry. Demi’s situation is a bit more severe, which is why this is called a disorder. (Which means that solutions that work for most of us, like “oh I’ll knit instead of eating” or “just play video games that keep your hands busy” aren’t as helpful for people who might compulsively overeat) “One thing that I haven’t fully conquered is my eating disorder.” Eating disorders usually work a little like alcoholism — you might recover, but you never have a “normal” relationship with food. “Food is still the biggest challenge in my life. It’s something that I’m constantly thinking about.” That part is almost universally relatable, right? I’ve been thinking about what I’m going to eat today since last night. What makes it a disorder is that Demi has, in the past, struggled to stop herself from overeating — and then she dealt with self-loathing issues by throwing up. That’s bulimia, folks. Understanding that those battling mental illness aren’t just grappling with neurotypical impulses is important. It’s good that Selena Gomez has so much empathy for her friend. And it’s good that both of these talented stars are sharing their stories. View Slideshow: Demi Lovato: 19 Candid Confessions from Her Documentary

Drake and Bella Hadid: Dating?!

Every once in a while, a celebrity couple comes along that makes so much sense you wonder how you their perfection for one another never occurred to you before. But in the case of Drake and Bella Hadid, you have to forgive yourself, because no one really thinks about Bella Hadid on regular basis, do they? Anyway, it looks as though these two have been engaging in lanky, sullen sex for several months now. “It started out casual, but they’re definitely serious now,” a source tells Us Weekly. “They’ve been meeting up and going out for romantic dinners.” The insider adds that Drake and Bella are far more than friends with benefits, and their relationship appears to have already reached the “exclusive” stage. In fact, it seems Drizzy went all out on Bella’s recent birthday, dropping tens of thousands on a lavish party for the model and her friends. “[Drake] planned it and paid for everything,” says the source . Now that the word is out that Drake was the one to finance the soiree, fans are reading way into Bella’s birthday Instagram post. “Thank you for all of your birthday wishes and love … I’m exploding with happiness and so thankful for all of the amazing people in my life. I love you,” she wrote. In all likelihood, it was just a generic message to her friends and family. Unless … was she telling Drake she loves him?! Probably not, but if the rumors that these two have been hooking up since June are true, they might actually be at that point in their relationship. Anyway, both parties have gone through messy high-profile breakups, so fans are all psyched about the possibility of the two of them closing out 2017 together. Bella and The Weeknd broke up  last year after dating for several months. And Drake has been dumped by Rihanna approximately 37 times, by our count, so it’ll be nice to see him move on with someone new. Unless it means no more breakup ballads. If that’s the case, we need to start a GoFundMe to bribe Bella to end this thing, ASAP. We need Sad Drizzy in our lives. View Slideshow: Drake: A History of Women He May Have Dated

Delilah Mourns Son’s Suicide in Emotional Tribute: My Heart is Struggling to Beat

Beloved radio host Delilah is speaking out about the loss of her son, Zachariah, who tragically took his own life earlier this month. Delilah says her “heart is struggling to continue to beat” after the death of her child, who succumbed to a battle with depression. The 57-year-old posted a number of childhood photos of her late son, along with a poem by Mary Jean Irion, in his memory. She writes, “Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart.” “Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so.” “One day I shall dig my nails into the earth,” she adds. “Or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all the world, your return.” “There will not be another ‘normal day’ with my Zack-Attack, at least not in this life time,” Delilah wrote in her emotional post. “No more cooking his favorite foods or bringing home gallons of his favorite juice, no more laughter around the bonfire or Christmas mornings.” “My heart is struggling to continue to beat.” “Thank you for your prayers, love and support. Please pray for his grandparents, his siblings, his dad and his friends,” she added. “We are all doing our best to focus on his joyful heart, his wild free spirit and his smile,” she concluded, still reeling from the pain.  Fans first learned of  Delilah’s son’s suicide after she shared the sad news with her friends and fans on Facebook on October 7. She wrote that he was “being treated, counseled, and embraced fiercely by family and friends while battling depression for some time now.” My heart is broken beyond repair and I can not fathom how to go on… but I have to believe he is at peace with the Lord.” She hopes “that God will get us through.” Delilah revealed that  Zachariah left a suicide note behind, though she did not reveal its specific contents for obvious reasons. The “Queen of Sappy Love Songs” also announced that she would be taking some time away from work in light of all this. “I will be absent from the radio and on social media for a time as I grieve and try to process this loss with my family,” she said. “Please pray for my beloved Zacky, and I will pray for all suffering from this debilitating disease called depression.” Delilah’s radio show, simply known as Delilah , based in the Pacific Northwest, regularly reaches more than eight million listeners. It’s unclear when that will resume. Sadly, Zachariah isn’t the first child the mother of 13 – yes, she has 13 children, 10 of whom are adopted – has lost already. One of her adopted sons, Sammy, tragically passed away back in 2012 from complications from sickle-cell anemia. On her Facebook page, Delilah also shared the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255. We urge anyone who may be considering such action – or who knows someone who may be – to call it immediately. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2017: In Memoriam

Kailyn Lowry Slams Jenelle Evans’ Threat to Quit: Yeah, Right!

Teen Mom 2  might be about to lose one of its most controversial stars, as  Jenelle Evans has threatened to quit . The Carolina Hurricane claims that MTV is making her and her husband look bad. Who better to weigh in on that than one of Jenelle's costars? In the video below, you'll see Kailyn Lowry share  exactly  what she thinks of that. And she gets in a nice burn about Jenelle in the process. The Jenelle Evans rant that prompted all of this was Jenelle going on Instagram to threaten to quit  Teen Mom 2 . “Yes, me and David have our ups and downs but yesterday’s episode was uncalled for.” We know that this will  shock  you, folks, but Jenelle's about to get super defensive about David Eason. “Because David didn’t feel like explaining another argument or drama on camera they make it look as if David is hiding some weird ass s–t from the public as if he was hurting me in some way?!” She needs to be aware that MTV can only edit so much — that fans are concerned about David Eason for a whole host of reasons? “I have decided after this season I’m probably calling it quits for filming this show.” That's quite a threat. “I told Morgan it’s getting to out of hand and it’s not healthy for us anymore, just harming us mentally.” Oh, is  that  what's wrong? All jokes aside, Jenelle Evans had issues before MTV ever came into her life. “They treat all of us as if we are in a freak show and in cages.” Right … it's a reality show. Except that she's not in a cage and is, in fact, getting paid. Pretty generously, as we understand it. “WE aren’t human beings to @mtv what-so-ever. The first screenshot of the custody episode someone posted photoshopping a hand mark on my arm. The other screenshots are pictures I’ve taken myself from the same episode… and there aren’t any hand marks.” Jenelle really didn't make it clear whether she was accusing MTV of that or just a random fan. But then Jenelle makes it sound like she's serious about threatening to leave … and describes the way that MTV can win her back. “Once they treat me with respect I’ll be back, if they don’t I’ll be happy with the life I’ve got. I told them this last night.” It sure sounds like Jenelle is just trying to get them to sanitize her life, right? Because even though reality shows are told through the lens of editing, you can only take things out or maybe take a few things out of context. (Taking too many things out of context would make the story incoherent) Try as they might, we don't see MTV's editors being able to add things in to  Teen Mom 2 . Considering that  David Eason makes Jenelle's own mother worried  for Jenelle and for Jenelle's children, it looks like there's more than editing behind the way that fans are viewing their relationship. But … either Jenelle doesn't see it, or she just doesn't  want  to see it. I the video below, Kailyn is asked about Jenelle's threat to quit. Kailyn starts her answer as diplomatically as she can. “I think we all feel differently.” Sure.  But  … “I have to disagree with her statement about MTV.” We'd imagine so. “As far as I can see it, you wouldn't have stuck with the show for 8 years if that were the case.” That's a very good point. Maybe Jenelle's just huffing and puffing because she wants to defend David Eason's honor, or whatever. “I'll leave that there.” She almost did. But remember that burn that we mentioned? When asked if she thinks that Jenelle should stay or go, Kailyn replied with this: “I don't care what Jenelle does.” Ouch. We do have to point out that there's one thing that's different now than it was for most of Jenelle's time on  Teen Mom 2 : David Eason. If he's really as controlling as they say, maybe he's the one who's encouraging Jenelle to quit Teen Mom 2. It's hard to see why he, or anyone, would want to close up the cash flow of  that sweet  Teen Mom  money . But maybe he wants the cameras off. That's a chilling thought. What's worse is that Jenelle might give him what he wants.

Minka Kelly: Accused of Breaking Up Jesse Williams’ Marriage

When nasty rumors surface — and they can happen to any of us, not just to celebrities — a lot of people hold their heads high and ignore it. A lot of the time, that’s the right call. But what do you do when someone goes on your own social media account and accuses you of being a homewrecker? If you’re Minka Kelly, you call them out. And you don’t mince words. The stunningly gorgeous Minka Kelly is dating the shockingly handsome Jesse Williams. Minka Kelly is perhaps best known for her role on the hit series Friday Night Lights . Jesse Williams, in turn, is best known either for his role on Grey’s Anatomy or perhaps for using his fame as a platform for Black Lives Matter, advocating to bring an end to police killings of unarmed, nonviolent black people across the US. Also, Jesse Williams has piercing blue eyes that make him very distinctively recognizable. These two very quietly began to date over this past summer (yes, summer is over, even though it still feels like the endless hellscape of early August). The thing is that this was just a few months after Jesse Williams and Aryn Drake-Lee divorced after five years of marriage. Some people wondered if Jesse Williams had put the cart before the horse and begun dating Minka Kelly before things fell apart between him and Aryn Drake-Lee. In other words, they wondered if Jesse Williams had performed  some Kevin Hart shenanigans . Not the part about being blackmailed with a sex tape — just starting a new relationship before the old one actually ended. While it’s true that many marriages fall apart due to cheating, that’s not always the case. And just because someone manages to find a new relationship quickly doesn’t mean that they and their new datemate were cheating during the old one. Still, people wonder. We suppose that they couldn’t help it. What someone certainly could have helped, however, was doing the social media equivalent of accusing Minka Kelly, to her face, of being a homewrecker. Because one Instagram user commented: “I hope the cheating rumors aren’t true. It would be disappointing.” That’s about as polite a way of phrasing a very rude accusation as we can think of. But it’s still super freaking rude. We have to imagine that the commenter didn’t imagine that Minka Kelly herself would respond. Minka Kelly replied, addressing the rumors that she was a homewrecker: “They’re not. Hate for you to be disappointed. Glad I could clear that up for you. Now f–k off.” You know, that’s a hostile reply, but it’s pretty warranted, right? We should note that Jesse Williams also addressed these rumors. Jesse Williams had a cameo in Jay-Z’s Footnotes for 4:44 , in which he was also extremely blunt about his feelings about the rumors. “I was in a relationship 13 years.13 real years, not 5 years, not 7 years, 13 years and all of a sudden mother f–kers are writing think-pieces that I somehow threw a 13-year relationship — like the most painful experience I’ve had in my life like with a person I’ve loved with all of my heart — that I threw a person and my family in the trash because a girl I work with is cute.” Remember, no matter how Jesse and Minka might feel about each other now, the “homewrecker” narrative would boil down to him finding her cute and the two of them hooking up because of it. So we don’t think that he’s insulting his actual, real-life relationship with Minka Kelly, here. Instead, he’s just insulting the theories about the two of them. That’s pretty fair, right? And you know what? Even if the two of them had started dating while Jesse was still married, that would be Jesse’s wrongdoing — not Minka’s. We need to stop pretending that a third party can “steal” a partner from their spouse. That’s not how this works. View Slideshow: 25 Most Shocking Cheating Scandals of All-Time

Lindsay Lohan and her Crazy Accent Defending Weinstein while Wasted of the day

The highlight of my day, and I just woke up, but I already know that this is the highlight of my day, because Lindsay Lohan, despite being forgotten is everything, a goddess, a religious experience, perfect…I mean for all the wrong reasons, but I like it…it feels like home… So she’s living in Dubai, where I guess really rich people offer her the really rich life, without her needing to work, all she has to do is let them either shit on her or hang out with her, because it’s fun to have a child star like Lohan in your harem, it impresses the other rich oil people.. She’s developed some wonky Arab accent, because she’s not from Long Island and she didn’t spend the better part of her life, we’re talking the first 25 years of her life in America…she’s an identity crisis and not quite a good actress in whatever it is she’s saying.. But she put out a suck up video to Weinstein, because she knows i’s good to get on his good side, maybe he’ll hire him… BUT ALSO…that hollywood is bullshit assholes trying to save face and they are all guilty of being sleazy greedy heartless disgusting fucks who stomp all over each other… It’s so easy for the media to get mad, or run with a story, that no one should care about…like reall…he’s the exec for a company that makes movies you like why the fuck do you care about where his dick goes…or what it does….without his dick going those places most of your favorite shitty stars wouldn’t exist… Lohan also asks his wife to stand by him, because it’s Lohan’s place, as if the wife didn’t know what he was up to…I mean this is beyond me – the media spin…clearly designed to distract us from something that actually matters in the world…like maybe World War Three..and other more interesting things.. Hollywood is noise, stop paying attention.. The post Lindsay Lohan and her Crazy Accent Defending Weinstein while Wasted of the day appeared first on DrunkenStepFather.com .
