Source: MediaNews Group/Boulder Daily Camera via Getty Images / Getty Protesters March On Boulder Police Dept. Over Detained Black Man Cleaning Yard We just wanna live our life, aye-aye, aye-aye, aye-aye… Last week we reported on an incident in Boulder, Colorado where police pulled their guns and detained Black Naropa University student Zayd Atkinson for…picking up trash off his lawn. Today, we get word via DailyCamera that the March for Boulder Police Oversight took place yesterday in which angry community made demands for more transparency in the department. Protesters posted up in front of the Boulder Police Department and made their voice heard. Nami Thompson, who does public policy for the Colorado Public Health Association and helped organize the march, asked attendees to email Boulder City Council and Police Chief Greg Testa with two requests: remove rifles from all police cars and allow people to submit anonymous complaints to the department. “When you’re young and you think of police, you think of justice,” Thompson said to the crowd in front of the police station. “But with Boulder police, it’s about justification.” Bars. Thompson also called to fix all the “broken” body cameras that never seen to be operating when controversial arrests or physical force is used. In addition to demanding that a civilian oversight committee be formed so that the community can police the police. Darren O’Conner, who is part of the Boulder Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People or NAACP, said that police shouldn’t be policing themselves. “Internal affairs is too internal,” O’Conner said, referencing the police department that handles internal investigations into police conduct or complaints. “(…) These are friends overseeing friends.” At this point, police officers simply cannot be trusted to be honest and forthright without some serious Big Brothering.
On Tuesday’s episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, the PuppyGate drama intensified, and it made one housewife look super sketchy. The explosive installment picked up with Teddi Mellencamp making her way over to Erika Girardi’s house to unveil her involvement in the storyline that is ruling the current season of the show. Teddi confirmed that she was not in good standing with Dorit and that Lisa Vanderpump used that to her advantage. “Lisa knew there was tension between Dorit and I,” Teddi dished, adding: “So I get the call from Vanderpump Dogs. They said, ‘This thing happened with Dorit and the dog. Can you believe it? It’s crazy. Lisa wanted you to know.’ And I had a very dramatic response.” “I was kind of in it, texting with them, being catty back. Like, ‘Alright, gimme more deets. Show me the tea!’ Not being the most above-board human being.” “She fed me information, and I bit,” Teddi continued. “Then Kyle and I get invited by Lisa Vanderpump to go to Vanderpump Dogs.” “They wanted me to say it. I already know this going into Vanderpump Dogs, and I couldn’t go through with it.” Erika wanted to know what Teddi was urged to say. “Telling everybody what Dorit did,” she confirmed. “Lisa is now in a full tizzy, ‘Don’t say anything! Don’t say anything!'” Teddi said about the whole mess, going on to say about LVP’s reaction to the whole mess being shot on camera. “That is when I realized, ‘I am set up. Something’s going on, and I don’t feel good about it anymore.’ If I wanted to lie, I wouldn’t have said I was petty at the beginning and I was involved.” “I have the proof, but somehow, she’s gonna try to flip it. I know it. In my heart of hearts, I think that’s what she’s doing right now.” Meanwhile, Dorit wondered whether she could find a way to trust Lisa again, and turned to her husband, PK. “I love her, but LVP is a genius at manipulation and control,” he told his wife. “She’s the best in the world at it, and I respect her for it, but it gets a bit different and a bit difficult for me when it’s my wife.” Dorit wanted Lisa to be honest with her. She was convinced Lisa orchestrated the whole thing and wanted an apology. As for Lisa, she was still trying to find a way to prove her innocence. John Blizzard, whose name keeps popping up in this whole mess, stopped by and Lisa asked for the truth. “I know I don’t know you very well,” Lisa said to Blizzard. “I mean, I don’t. I know you’ve worked at the center. And really, before we even start anything, I really appreciate everything.” “However, you have kind of complicated my life. Our relationship is not that close, but clearly, you seem to be a lot closer to Teddi.” “Yeah, I am,” confirmed John. “Somehow, things got misconstrued,” LVP continued, adding that Blizzard is mistaken. “Okay, so you told her. But then you implicate me,” said a stunned Lisa who felt like she had been implicated in something she had no part of. “I put words in your mouth that were not true,” he replied. “And I will own that, and I’m sorry for that … and that’s what everyone at the center is so frustrated about is how this is all being flipped onto you.” “She’s not gonna be happy that you showed me the texts,” Lisa said. “Yeah, but at the same time, she shouldn’t have brought up my texts,” John replied. Lisa wasted no time in inviting Dorit and Kyle over to her house to show them the proof, and Kyle was not impressed. “I can see what you’re saying,” she said, adding: “There’s no doubt that [Teddi’s] hands aren’t clean in this, but I think that it’s not fair to put that on her when she wasn’t alone in the situation.” Lisa was not about to let her vindication be marred by such drama. Lisa said she had “never spoken to John Blizzard.” Kyle took aim at Lisa, wondering how she knew that Teddi knew about the dog. Lisa said that she texted Dorit saying, “You need to get in front of this. You need to clear this up.” Lisa ten provided what she said to Teddi about the matter: “Well, I just knew that if Teddi knows, or I know, you know, we all know, we start talking about it, so I said, ‘You should go and talk to John.'” Dorit was blindsided by the texts, but Kyle was not sure Lisa was telling the truth. “Lisa’s saying she never spoke with John Blizzard, but someone told her something because she quickly let Dorit know,” Kyle said to the cameras. “So who told you? Where’d you get the information? Obviously, Lisa and John Blizzard had a whole conversation going on about that.” Yeah, PuppyGate is here to stay! RHOBH continues Tuesdays on Bravo. Source: @photosbynae / iOne Digital As one of North Carolina’s top-tier M.C.’s, Rapsody has created a comfortable space for herself in the rap game. With her lauded album Laila’s Wisdom under her belt, along with celebrated mixtapes and memorable features with folks like Kendrick Lamar , Rapsody is now looking to take on other endeavors. This definitely doesn’t mean she’s quitting the rap game. Instead, she hopes to exercise more aspects of her creative side. Rapsody stopped by Global Grind on International Women’s Day to discuss some of these burgeoning interests: “I have so many other loves,” Rapsody said. “Like I was a big reader as a kid. I went to the library all the time, so for that, I want to write children’s books.” Rapsody also has the dramatic arts on her mind: “I’d love to get into acting, but I want to do it right. You know I’ve been sent several scripts, but I told my agent to hold off because I really want to take classes and really learn about the art of acting. Like I would want somebody trying to enter the hip hop world to be respectful of the culture and learn the art of M.C.ing, I want to learn how to be a great actor.” The 36-year-old listed Cicely Tyson and Phylicia Rashad as her biggest influences: “If I can have the chance to share a screen with them. Even if I was the person who came in and put the milk on the table. Just to be in that space and just to have the opportunity to gain the knowledge and wisdom because they’ve been in the arts forever.” Inspirational Black women have been a common theme in Rapsody’s career. Although she’s listed people like Jay-Z as a major influence on her rhyming, women like Ms. Lauryn Hill set a standard right when Rapsody needed it. Since Hill’s seminal work The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, she hasn’t acquired the best reputation when it comes to showing up on time for shows or even creating a good relationship with certain band mates ( according to Robert Glasper ). However, Rapsody says there’s always more to an artist than what’s put into the public: “Lauryn runs her business the way Lauryn wants to run her business,” Rapsody said, “It’s two sides to every story. Robert told his, Lauryn told hers. It’s none of my business. It’s not my place to critique as far as her shows or her lateness.” Rapsody also doesn’t let the tough talk diminish Ms. Hill’s impact on her life: “You know, for me, I always say Lauryn was on time when we needed her. When I needed Lauryn in ’98 and ’96, she was on time, so to me, she’s allowed to be late. I think the industry has been trying to run her for her life, so for her to take control of what she wants to do and do it her way, I applaud her on that.” Rapsody went on to detail the various reasons Hill could be late to a show: “You know as a mother, putting your children first, I’m never mad at that. You gotta be late because you got something to do with your kids, then do that. You know at this point, if you know she’s going to be late and you ain’t with it, then don’t buy the ticket. If you decide to go, take some Uno cards just in case. I’m just in the business of appreciating Lauryn while she’s here.” Just like Ms. Hill set a blueprint for many women to come, Rapsody hopes to follow that same path with music, the arts and even fashion one day: “I definitely want to do my own clothing line at some point. Maybe like some tomboy feminine-type style ’cause women that are tomboys are sexy too, so I want to create a space for that.” If Cicely Tyson, Phylicia Rashad and Ms. Hill have taught us anything, it’s that there’s always space.
Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty As fans around the globe celebrate the life and legacy of The Notorious B.I.G. , the late rapper’s daughter is honoring her father in his hometown. On Friday (March 8), Ms. Wallace reopened the Notoriouss clothing store just across the block from its original location. CBS News reports : T’yanna Wallace, the daughter of Christopher Wallace, better known as the rapper Notorious B.I.G. or Biggie Smalls, is holding a grand opening for the reopening of her Notoriouss Clothing store on Friday. The store is located in Brooklyn, her and her father’s home borough. Wallace’s initial store opened at 512 Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn in Dec. 2017, the store is moving across the street. Wallace told News 12 in 2017 that she wanted the store to be a “flagship store for streetwear and is heavily inspired by New York and Brooklyn hip hop culture.” Wallace’s father was shot and killed on March 9, 1997 in Los Angeles, thus the timing of the reopening appears to be in tribute. A study released by the USA Swimming Foundation revealed that 64 percent of Black children don’t know how to swim. Furthermore, 79 percent of children who come from low-income families are at risk of drowning because they lack swimming skills. Olympic swimmer Simone Manuel is aiming to change that narrative and save more lives. Manuel recently visited LeBron James ’ I Promise School in Akron, Ohio to talk with students about water safety and encourage them to learn how to swim, SwimSwam reported. Simone Manuel Visits Lebron James' I Promise School In Akron https://t.co/3TFwIFgawQ — SwimSwam (@swimswamnews) March 7, 2019 The school—which opened its doors last year—was designed to provide at-risk youth with a quality education. Manuel’s visit was in partnership with the Akron Area YMCA and the USA Swimming Foundation. The foundation plans on providing students at the school with free swimming lessons in June 2019. After visiting the school, Manuel took to Instagram to share her excitement about making an impact in the lives of these children. “My heart is happy and filled with joy! So honored to visit I Promise School to share my experience and talk about water safety and the importance of learning to swim!” she posted. “Many thanks to @usaswimming foundation and @akronareaymca for partnering with me to provide swim lessons at a week long camp in June 2019 for every student! Working to change the statistic and give the life saving gift of swimming.” She has continually used her platform to spread awareness about the high drowning rate within the Black community and is working hard to reverse the alarming trend. “The most important thing is saving lives more than winning gold medals. Representation is important,” she told the Mercury News after competing in the Olympics. Manuel has broken barriers in the realm of sports. In 2016, she became the first Black woman to win an individual Olympic medal in swimming. Through her work with the USA Swimming Foundation, she’s inspiring Black and brown children to follow in her footsteps. Alex Rodriguez ended his Major League Baseball career with 696 home runs. But the polarizing third basement saved his biggest swing for Saturday night… … when he aimed for the fences with Jennifer Lopez and connected! On an agreement to become husband and wife! That’s right, readers, Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez are engaged! To be married! Both superstars shared the enormous news at the same time posing a photo of the gigantic rock Rodriguez gifted to Lopez on Instagram. “She said yes,” captioned the image, which featured the diamond on his bride-to-be’s finger, while J. Lo published the same snapshot along with including eight black heart emojis in her caption. Prepare yourselves to be blown away — but here’s an up-close look at the rock in question: According to a People Magazine insider, Rodriguez popped the life-altering question during a vacation in the Bahamas. He also did so after posted a quote on his Instagram Story defining a soulmate. It reads as follows: A soulmate isn’t someone who completes you. No, a soulmate is someone who inspires you to complete yourself. A soulmate is someone who loves you with so much conviction, and so much heart, that it is nearly impossible to doubt just how capable you are of becoming exactly who you have always wanted to be. Who knew Alex Rodriguez was such a romantic, huh? The happy news comes nearly seven weeks after the couple celebrated its two-year anniversary on February 3. Back when they first got together, most observers assumed this would be a mere fling between two very rich and attractive people with an extensive dating history. But they actually have proven to support each other at all times in public and the feelings have seemed quite real for awhile now. “You make my world a more beautiful safe and stable place … in the midst of our ever-changing, ever moving life,” Lopez wrote in part of a touching Instagram post to celebrate the two-year mark. Added Rodriguez in his own message at the time: “We are meant to be, and how much you mean to me cannot be put into words.” Rodriguez was previously married to Cynthia Scurtis. They divorced in 2008 after six years of marriage and share two kids, Natasha, 14, and Ella, 10. Lopez, meanwhile, was previously married to Ojani Noa, Chris Judd AND Marc Anthony. She shares twins Max and Emme, 11, with Anthony, who she divorced in 2014. Yes, that’s three marriages — but Lopez has said in the past she would still be open to a fourth. “I do believe in marriage,” she told Harper’s Bazaar a year ago. “And I would love to grow old with somebody in a committed relationship. “But I’m not forcing anything right now.” As for A. Rod? She told this same magazine in this same interview: “It’s good, it’s healthy; we communicate well. We understand each other’s lives in a way that most other people couldn’t.” CONGRATS TO THE HAPPY COUPLE!
When someone is praising Piers Morgan, you know that it’s going to be a mess. With the release of the chilling Leaving Neverland documentary about two men who accuse Michael Jackson of childhood sex abuse, he’s a hot topic. But T.I. is citing an old interview of Jackson’s and claiming that allegations against him are merely an “agenda against our culture.” T.I. has, in the past, used his fame and platform for good cuases — such as marijuana reform. Unfortunately, this week, he responded to the Leaving Neverland documentary by sharing a 1999 Michael Jackson interview. T.I. begins his caption: “Pierce Morgan a real one for this.” “I would slit my wrists before I would [harm a child]. I would never ever,” Jackson said in the old interview. “If it [weren’t] for children, I would throw in the towel,” he can be heard saying. “I would kill myself. I wouldn’t care to live.” Jackson is saying that he could never abuse a child because he loves them so much. “Let this man speak for himself to defend his legacy,” T.I. writes alongside the interview clip. He insists: “Don’t just listen to one side and expect to find truth.” For the record, Michael Jackson’s side told its tale repeatedly over the years, in interviews and in court. Notably, the two men featured in Leaving Neverland had helped to tell Michael’s side when they were much younger. But T.I. suggests that any current discussion of Jackson’s legacy amounts to badmouthing someone who cannot respond. “Oh that’s right…” he writes. “Dead men can’t speak.” “So what was the point again?” T.I. asks. Some would say that the truth is either always or almost always its own rewward, that it holds intrinsic value. Others would say that every #MeToo story, including those in Leaving Neverland, helps spread awareness of powerful sexual predators. But T.I. believes that there is another motive. He suggests: “Destroy another strong black historical LEGEND?!?!” Yikes, dude. “[There are] several examples of pedophilia in American History…” T.I. points out. That is absolutely true. “if y’all pulling up all our old s–t…” he begins. T.I. continues: “we gotta examine ELVIS PRESLEY, HUGH HEPHNER, and a whole slew of others.” He suggests that these individuals are “guilty of the same if not more!!!” We won’t litigate his characterization of those men, but we’ll note that Elvis has certainly been accused of preying upon multiple 14-year-old girls. Though Michael Jackson’s alleged victims were closer to half of that age, we believe that all sexual predators should be exposed and reviled. T.I. then implies that Michael Jackson is being mentioned as the result of a racist conspiracy. “BUT WHY US all the time?” he asks. It seems clear that he is also thinking of the recent and long overdue arrests of disgraced rapper R. Kelly . “There’s an agenda to destroy OUR CULTURE,” he theorizes. In his mind, sex abuse survivors telling their stories is part of a larger scheme. He claims: “These are assaults against OUR CULTURE!!!” “Make no mistake of it!!!” T.I. concludes. Questions about why the accusers are coming forward now are best answered by this satirical headline from The Onion . We understand that it is frustrating and disappointing when a celebrity or other entertainer whom you admire does something bad. But the “threat” to expose other accused sexual predators is empty. All sexual predators are bad. His suggestion that there’s some sinister agenda plays right into the arguments made by the likes of R. Kelly and Bryan Singer. R. Kelly has suggested that accusations against him are the result of him being a successful black man. Bryan Singer has accused allegations against him as being homophobic in nature. There have been real conspiracies against minorities. Abuse survivors telling their stories are not examples of that. If T.I. really want to make a plea and do some good, he should just remind people to not harass Michael Jackson’s kids about what their father may have done. It’s been about 16 months since Martin Shkreli was sentenced to seven years in prison . You probably remember Shkreli as the “Pharma Bro” (though we’ve always preferred the “Pharma Douche” variation on that nickname) who jacked up the price of a life-saving medication for HIV patients a whopping 5,000% percent during his tenure as CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals. That act of pure evil made Shkreli “the most hated man in America.” (Of course, his constant trolling of the Wu-Tang Clan didn’t help. Did no one inform this guy they’re nothing to f–k with?) But it was Shkreli’s unrelated conviction for securities fraud that earned him seven-year stay in federal prison. Shkreli is a devoted member of MAGA nation, but he never climbed the ladder of insanity high enough to get the full Manafort treatment, so the Donald isn’t sticking his neck out by pardoning Lil Marty. But fear not, the hip hop obsessed Hillary hater is making the most of his life behind bars, as revealed in a hilarious new profile of Shkreli published this week by the Wall Street Journal. The paper promises a glimpse into “the secret life of inmate 87850-053, 16 months into a seven-year sentence,” and boy, does it deliver. The most talked-about revelation from the Journal piece is that Shkreli is still acting as CEO of his company (newly-named Phoenixus AG in response to numerous PR nightmares) with the aid of a contraband cell phone. And while you might think that his time behind bars would have humbled Shkreli a bit, it seems he’s still a nightmare to work for. The Journal reports that one of Shkreli’s most recent actions was to call his CFO and fire the guy while he was on an African vacation with his fiancee. The problem, it seems, is that the exec picked the wrong time to ask for a seven-figure (?!?!) raise. You see, Shkreli is stretched thin these days, what with paying for protection and covering his fellow inmates’ poker debts (seriously). Marty was already feeling the pinch, and since the fired exec won’t be shanking anyone in the yard for him, he had to be let go. So who are the movers and shakers on Shkreli’s prison payroll? Well, it seems he’s got a crew of guys with names like “Krispy” and “D-Block.” According to the Journal , these up-and-comers “walk alongside him in the hall to ward off shenanigans from other inmates,” which is exactly how we would expect the Wall Street Journal to cover prison politics. But Krispy and D-Block do more than just keep Shkreli from physical harm. They recently dissuaded him from playing guitar in a prison rock band, as the other members were all locked up for child molestation. They’re also helping Marty with his goal of doing — we sh-t you not — 15 push-ups in a row. We encourage you to take a moment to reflect on how gloriously f–ked this dude would be, were it not for the fact that he’s mega-rich. But it’s not just money that keeps Shkreli’s associates loyal (j/k, that’s exactly what it is). The 35-year-old recently attempted to bolster his street cred by asking his Facebook followers to translate Meek Mill lyrics into Spanish for him. And in exchange, the Shkreli crew bestowed upon their boss the ultimate honor — a prison nickname. That nickname? A-hole.
