This is my Bieber Experience. I would never have imagined me writing this but here goes. Every time Justin came to London I would always go see him, even just to catch a glimpse or see his head poke out from the top of a car. I remember the first time I saw him, it was at Westfield Stratford and I saw him perform a few songs. I camped since 3 a.m. just too see him. I went to London a few times after that and only saw Justin’s head – which don’t get me wrong was amazing that I was still so close to him. But then on September 12th 2012, I finally met Justin and Alfredo, it was the most amazing day of my life. I didn’t expect it at all but I went too Capital FM, as people were saying Justin would be there, which was a rumor. A couple friends and I bumped into Nathan from The Wanted, he told us where Justin was staying. I was so excited because I knew it wasn’t a joke. I knew Justin was actually staying there. We travelled to the hotel and waited for 3-4 hours and Dan came out. He spoke to a few of us but had to leave as he was practicing for a performance. Then 30 minutes later Justin, Kenny, and Alfredo came out and there was about 20-30 girls there. Some girls all ran to Justin, so he ran back inside the hotel and Kenny was telling us to get behind the barriers . We all got behind the barriers and Justin and Alfredo came back out. Alfredo was filming and he stood right in front of us. I didn’t know what to say and he couldn’t take pictures as he was holding a huge camera so I said, “Alfredo can I touch you?” I probably sounded like a pervert I know but he held my hand. Justin was moving down the line closer to us and I took a photo with him, it all went so quickly but it was the best experience of my life. I couldn’t even believe it until an hour after. I rang my mum and I was speechless, she was speechless. Never give up, dream do come true. Two months after I met Justin he followed me on Twitter. I used to spend hours and hours tweeting him too follow me but I just simply tweeted him once saying, ‘I love you’ and he followed me. I didn’t expect it at all. An hour after Justin followed me, Alfredo followed me. It was another one of the best days of my life. I was so shocked and I was in school. Everyone was so happy for me and I had a smile on my face all day. NEVER SAY NEVER and BELIEVE because dreams DO come true. -Chelsey (@FredoAteMyOreos) See the original post: This is my Bieber Experience. I would never have imagined me…
My name’s Brianna and I’ve been a fan of Justin since 2009. It all started when my friend’s mom bought her and I tickets to Justin’s kick off show in AZ. I was so excited, I was counting down the days. A week or so before the concert my friend told me that there was a contest on BieberFever for M&G’s. She entered the contest but I didn’t want to get my hopes up and get too excited, because I knew it might not happen. The night before the concert was the day my friend found out if she won. I was so nervous. She finally called saying that she’d won! I started crying and shaking so much. I was in denial, I didn’t think this was actually happening. It was finally the day of the concert and we got to the arena around 2 p.m. Finally we got our wristbands and we made sure we were first in line so we could stand next to Justin for the picture. Kenny was standing there talking to someone and he’s honestly so adorable. It was finally our turn to go and meet Justin. I was the first one to walk in and Justin was standing there looking flawless. He gave me a hug and said, “What’s up love, how are you? Nice to meet you. Come stand right here.” The only thing I could say was, “Heeey Justin.” The picture was taken and we were rushed out of there. It was only 30 seconds, but by far the best 30 seconds of my life. The concert was amazing! Justin threw up and was sick, but he still performed like a beast because he didn’t want to let us down. I’m so thankful and blessed to have this happen. If you haven’t met Justin yet, don’t ever give up! Never say Never, your time will come. -@brilemburg Continued here: My name’s Brianna and I’ve been a fan of Justin since 2009. It…
My name is Maddie and I met Justin on December 15, 2012 at B96 Jingle Bash in Chicago. I’ve been waiting to write a “My Bieber Experience” since the start. It all started when B96 was giving away meet & greets for the Jingle Bash along with backstage passes. They gave out a pair three times a day for two weeks, I never thought I would win. I’ve seen Justin in concert 5 times and I always thought I’d never meet him. Fortunately, my mom knew how much I loved Justin and tried every day to win them for me while I was at school. The second day they were giving them away, I got the message that I knew was going to change my life forever. My mom texted me saying, “OMG!!! You are gonna meet Justin!!!!” At first I didn’t believe her. The days passed and I had to wait a month and a half to finally meet Justin. Then the day finally came. I woke up bright and early to begin getting ready! At 11 a.m. I left my house to start heading to the Allstate Arena and had to pick up my tickets as well. When I went to pick up my ticket, they ended up being in the 9th row. I had never been that close to him before in my life. I went crazy! But my excitement didn’t stop there. The way B96 had it set up the meet & greets was in the middle of the concert. We had to be at the West Gate by 8:20 p.m. so I left my seat at 8 during the end of Cody Simpson’s performance. Me and my little sister got a wristband and were 4th in line all ready to meet Justin. While we were waiting in line, right after following his performance, Cody Simpson walked by and waved and said hi to us all. Originally they had said that they would do pictures in groups of 2 but then Justin was late and we didn’t go backstage till 10 p.m. and Justin was supposed to perform at 10:10. They made us get into groups of 6, which I was kind of bummed about but I knew I was meeting him so it was all okay. We walked backstage, down these stairs to this tent thing that Justin was in. While we were in line down there Ryan Beatty was sitting down on his phone. My sister and I called him over and he hugged the both of us. Finally after hours of waiting and missing the concert, it was our turn to meet Justin. We walked into this tent, and i wasn’t letting anyone else stand next to him. I stood on the right side, and my sister hopped next to him on the left side. When we first walked in, he hugged us both and said hi. They took the picture and I gave him a quick hug and he said, “Bye thanks for coming, I love you all.” As soon as we left the tent I started to bawl hysterically, realizing what had just happened and we still had his whole performance left. He came on around 10:30 and performed for about 40 minutes. All together the night was so special and something I will always remember. It was great meeting him, he’s so flawless and nice. I just want everyone to Never Say Never, cause I never thought in million years I would get to have a My Bieber Experience, and meet my idol Justin Bieber. -@maddieeguthrie See the article here: My name is Maddie and I met Justin on December 15, 2012 at B96…
Hi, my name is Chloe. First of all I can’t believe I’m sitting here writing my own Bieber Experience! I never thought this day would come. My Bieber Experience all started when Believe tour dates came out. I saw that the first date was in Arizona, which is where I live. I looked at a few other places to see if Justin was playing anywhere on my birthday, and he was! I asked my mom if we could get tickets to see him on in LA and she said yes! I got tickets to see him on my 15th birthday, October 2nd, 2012. I really wanted meet & greets and we did everything we could to buy them, but they sold out immediately. I was upset, but I was also so grateful that I even got tickets. I didn’t want to give up on meeting him though, so I started to enter tons of meet and greet contests. I kept the radio on 24/7 and entered contests all over the U.S. because I didn’t care what it took, I was determined to meet him. Months went by and I still had not won any of the contests. That’s when Justin re-tweeted the BieberFever fan club saying that there was a meet & greet contest. I had lost a lot of hope, but I entered anyway. All I had to do was send in a picture of all of my Justin Bieber merchandise. I sent a few pictures along with a paragraph about why I love Justin and the crazy things I’ve done like taking a cardboard cutout to the mall or to the movie theatre or getting a cake for his birthday. A few weeks went by and I had forgotten that I even entered the contest. Luckily, the night before the concert, I just happened to go on my email and I saw a reply from BieberFever. I’m pretty sure I stopped breathing when I saw that . My two best friends, Rebecca and Hannah looked at me and asked what was wrong. I opened the email and I read it out loud. All of us started screaming and crying. I lost all self-control. I was rolling around on the floor screaming and bawling my eyes out and I sat and cried until I had no tears left. When I got to the Staples Center, I went to the box office to pick up my wristbands and went into this hallway inside. As I was waiting in line, Pattie walked inside and waved to everyone in line, including me! All of a sudden I saw Jaden Smith poke his head out of a curtain! I started screaming and he looked me and smiled! I went through that curtain that Jaden was in and I watched these two guys open up more curtains to the next room. I realized that the guy on the right was Moshe. I started freaking out and the guy on the left said “Happy Birthday!” I realized it was Kenny! I screamed in Kenny’s face and started crying as I gave him a hug. I was so shocked that I could barley move. That’s when Kenny said that Justin was right behind me. I turned around and Justin was standing right there with this big smile and his gorgeous brown eyes looking right at me. I started hyperventilating and my face was really red from crying. I was a mess and I was really embarrassed that Justin saw me like that. I couldn’t bring myself to walk over to him so my mom had to help me because I was holding up the line. Justin hugged me and told me not to cry. He let go and said “Happy Birthday sweetie.” He smelled so good! I was falling over and I started to get really dizzy, my mom had to hold me up for the picture. I hugged Justin one more time and I watched him lift up his hat and put it back on as he continued talking to Kenny . Justin said, “Yeah man it was so scary.” Other people started coming in, so I had to leave. I didn’t say one word to Justin. For years, I planned out what I was going to say to him, and I blew it. As I walked outside, people saw me crying and all of these girls started screaming, “OH MY GOD YOU’RE SO LUCKY!” People were taking pictures with me, hugging me, and some people even asked if they could touch me. It was crazy. The concert was absolutely incredible. Allison walked by us a few times, and I tried to get her attention, but she didn’t see me. It was the most amazing experience of my entire life. I didn’t think that night could get any better. After the concert, we went to Chick-fil-A in Hollywood. As we were walking up to the line, we saw Jaden Smith, Moises Arias, Tyler The Creator and Mateo Arias! I was taking pictures of them and Moises saw me so I asked if I could take a picture of him. He said yes and he was just standing there while I took a picture of him. It was really awkward, so he said “Uhhh do you want to be in the picture with me?” and I was like, “Oh, yeah!” I took a picture with Moises and Jaden walked over to talk to us. I told Jaden that he is an amazing performer and he said, “Thank you I really appreciate that.” I also told him that I saw him when I was in line to meet Justin and he said, “Oh yeah, I saw you too. Was I creepin on you?” and he did the dougie! Then he asked if I wanted to get a picture so we took pictures with everyone and we high fived Tyler! I don’t really know what I was thinking. Everyone we met was SO nice! That night, all of my dreams came true. Everything that happened was so unreal. It felt like a dream. That was definitely the most magical and incredible birthday that anybody could ever dream of. Justin is so sincere and so is everyone else that I met that night. -@FallforJBiebs6 Originally posted here: Hi, my name is Chloe. First of all I can’t believe I’m sitting…
Reasons number 450 and 451 we absolutely love Jennifer Lawrence: She’s addicted to junk food and reality TV, just like the rest of us! [NOTE: These Jennifer Lawrence bikini photos are also reasons] The breakout star of The Hunger Games and surefire Oscar nominee for Silver Linings Playbook says of her L.A. apartment, “It’s like a reality TV show cave.” “I just learned how to work TiVO. That changed my life.” That was a pretty awesome invention, agreed. Jen tells Marie Claire that her favorite nights involve just having friends over. What does she serve up when she’s entertaining? “Junk food, of course!” The Kentucky-born actress calls herself “old lady” who has no interest in the Hollywood party scene: “After it’s 11, I’m like, ‘Don’t these kids ever get tired?'” “When I’m out, I think about my couch.” “Like, ‘It would be awesome to be on it right now. I bet there’s an episode of Dance Moms on. Am I missing a new episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians ? ” “I’m just stressed by the idea of missing them.” “Reality TV is my silver lining,” she jokes. “At the end of the day there’s probably nothing that makes me feel better than junk food and reality TV.” Amen, Jen. Amen.
We can all agree that 2012 has been an excellent year for the movies , but the more salacious among us will note that it’s been an awesome year to perv out at the movies. Although we didn’t get another look at the Fassmember and all the conflicting feelings it brought up (Hotness! Confusion! Embarrassment at being psyched to see him naked in Shame when actually it’s really f***ing depressing!) there were some rather interesting trends that reared their heads that invite a closer look. Whether studios are getting braver or filmmakers are getting bolder is a debate for another time — and please don’t suggest that 50 Shades had too much to do with it. Let’s salute all the sexin’ that happened onscreen in 2012. Hair Here, There, and Everywhere Merkin-makers must have been counting their coins this year because going au naturel was all the rage, although I’m sure that the Brazilian waxers weren’t going hungry either. Neither of the leading ladies in Killer Joe kept their pants on the whole time, which wasn’t too much of a shock given director William Friedkin ‘s bold career. ( Cruising , anyone?) The very first scene puts us — and Emile Hirsch — face to face with Gina Gershon’s lustrous bush* as Gershon throws open the door to the family trailer wearing nothing but a T-shirt. Juno Temple is probably the most naked, though, as the uncomfortably young and dotty Dottie, who’s given to Killer Joe (the frequently shirtless Matthew McConaughey ) as a retainer until her brother and dad can pay him for killing their mother. (Got all that?) I’m not sure if Dottie is psychic and otherworldly or, you know, touched in the head, or even if she’s of age, but let’s get back to that later in the “Is This Even Legal?” section. *(Actually a merkin, as per this interview .) In the slightly more matter-of-fact dramedy The Sessions , Helen Hunt sheds her clothes in a professional manner as a sex surrogate hired by a man who’s spent most of his life in an iron lung. Some critics have commented that it seems unfair to show Hunt’s character completely nude while John Hawkes remains covered, but even Hawkes would have a hard time pulling off a nude scene as a paralyzed polio survivor. Sarah Polley’s Take This Waltz kept it casual when it came to the full frontal females. After an apparently hilarious incident of pool-peeing, Michelle Williams and Sarah Silverman enjoyed a tête–à–tête in the communal YMCA showers with a whole bunch of other ladies from their water aerobics class. Although I’ve never enjoyed a chill convo with my shower neighbors at the gym, I did appreciate finally seeing a wider variety of female bodies on screen. The extras were different ages and ethnicities, shapes and sizes, and they were just doing what bodies do when they’re not on sexual display. They all seemed a lot less pissed than I would have been if some yahoo had ruined my water aerobics class, too. Coming in Handy Handjobs aren’t just for high school any more, y’all. In fact, some of the most highfalutin films of the year show or imply manual stimulation. There was all sorts of snickering among the less mature among us (ahem) about masturbation in The Master , wherein the sort-of-but-not-really L. Ron Hubbard stand-in played by Philip Seymour Hoffman gets an almost stern handjob from his wife, Oscar hopeful Amy Adams . Seriously: that didn’t look like much fun. Hyde Park on Hudson gives a new meaning to kissing cousins when FDR’s “distant cousin” Margaret Stuckley (Laura Linney) gives a surreptitious hand to the cigarette-chomping prez, played by Bill Murray . The less said about this, the better. It’s not even clear what to call the scene in Holy Motors when Monsieur Merde (French for shit, for those of you playing at home) suffers from some sort of ecstatic priapism in the presence of a gorgeous fashion model played by Eva Mendes. But let’s not leave out the ladies! There was nothing quite as steamy as Gina Gershon subtly but skillfully manipulating Jennifer Tilly in Bound (under the tutelage of Susie Bright, who was a consultant on the early Wachowski film), but it seems practically greedy to ask for that much hotness once every decade or so. However, the sweetly sexy Hello I Must Be Going does have a hot and heavy make-out scene between freshly divorced Amy ( Melanie Lynskey ) and younger man Jeremy (Christopher Abbott of Girls ) that involves some deft fingerbangin’. Sisters don’t always have to do it for themselves, you know. Homoerotic Tension It seems like folks were waiting on tenterhooks to see Kristen Stewart joyfully jack off Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund in On the Road , but the real hotness in that movie is Hedlund’s portrayal of Dean Moriarty’s playful pansexuality. His toothy, mischievous grin reels in not just the ladies but soulful men like Tom Sturridge’s Carlo Marx, a stand-in for Allen Ginsberg. And honestly, I don’t believe for a second that Marylou (Stewart) was the only one who wanted that threesome with Sal (Riley). Movieline has already explored the bondage-y vibe between James Bond and Skyfall villain Silva , which gave many viewers all sorts of naughty thoughts about Javier Bardem and Daniel Craig. I’d be seriously remiss if we left out Ezra Miller , the freaky fashion plate who came out as queer in a delightful Out magazine feature . As Patrick, Miller is the best part of The Perks of Being a Wallflower , and not just because he’s the best Frank-N-Furter this side of Tim Curry. (Those gams!) The tumultuous relationship he has with a closeted schoolmate is heartbreaking and the realest part of this YA adaptation. Also, he is extremely hot, and I don’t care if that makes me a dirty old lady. Plenty of people fall in love at the office, and in About Cherry , their office is a porn studio, filmed at Kink.com ‘s headquarters at the Armory in San Francisco. Young porn starlet Angelina (Ashley Hinshaw) and director Margaret (Heather Graham) feel the heat when Rollergirl gets behind the camera for a movie, but it’s not until they break up with their respective significant others that they become a sexy power couple. Jack and Diane is full of smoldering teen lust, and Riley Keough is fully channeling her grandfather Elvis as a young soft butch falling for Brit pixie Diane, played by Juno Temple. There’s lots of smooching and yearning and whatnot, including an ill-fated attempt at shaving Diane’s pubes, but there’s also a werewolf interlude because teenage lust can be scary or something. I’m Maryam from Montreal, Canada. Before telling you guys about my experience, I just wanted to say how much I love this tumblr. I’ve been reading stories since 2010, and I always knew that one day it would be my turn to share my moment with Justin. All these stories gave me hope, I actually never gave up, and here I am now telling you my experience. It’s crazy. I tried so many times to convince my parents to fly me to New York for the launch of Someday, or to fly me to Toronto for the MMVAs. I entered thousands of contests, but nothing ever happened. I saw Justin in concert in 2010, so I knew I was lucky enough. I was trying my best to be positive, but sometimes I wondered if I was dreaming the impossible: meeting Justin. It was May 23rd and Justin was about to announce his new tour dates! I was so excited because it had been a long time since he came to my city. When I saw that he was coming back on November 26th 2012, I freaked out! My mom let me skip school to buy tickets on pre-sale. I had been saving up money for his new tour since March 2011, and I was more than happy to finally make my dream come true, by buying meet & greets. That was probably the most stressful moment of my life! I knew I could get them, but there was still a little part of me saying “It might not happen, they might be gone in a second.” I ended up getting them at 12:05 p.m. I cried my eyes out! Was I really going to meet my idol, after 3 years of waiting, and see him live for the 2nd time, first row?! After this, 6 LONG months passed by, I was counting down the days ‘till I could take a picture with my boy. Finally November 26th arrived. I couldn’t sleep the night before the concert, I was so nervous, stressed and shocked. Around 4 p.m we checked in, and they gave us our wristbands and tickets for the show. I started freaking out. My dream was about to come true soon. While we were waiting for the meet & greets to start, we saw Kenny, Justin’s grandparents and Dan! It was great to finally see the crew, the ones that work as hard as Justin, and help him stay true to himself. The line finally started to move. I was nervous as hell. I kept asking my mom and my friend if this was real life, if Justin was really a couple feet away from me. Then, when the security said “next group” to us, I took a deep breath and walked behind the curtains. Justin was there smiling at someone, looking flawless. I stayed there like an idiot, admiring his figure. I honestly didn’t recognize him, cause he was wearing those big glasses. He felt so unreal, I was literally speechless. I found my words and said, “Hey Justin.” He turned around, smiled at me saying “Hey” with his sexy deep voice. I smiled back and went next to him for the picture. When he wrapped his arm around my waist, I was like *Holy shit, Justin Bieber is actually touching me right now,* but I just acted like this was a casual/typical thing. After they took the picture, I turned my head to face Justin and asked him for a hug. He said, “Sure.” While hugging him I said, “I love you.” When the meet & greets were over, I freaked out, I kept screaming and jumping everywhere. It’s definitely a moment I’ll never forget. During the concert I saw Pattie, Jeremy, Jazmyn, Jaxon and Kenny! Being able to see him first row was special, I could see every detail, it was perfect. We were so loud, Justin seemed speechless and happy, he even talked French. During the show, he threw a bottle off the stage, and this girl picked it up. I was spazzing and I had to drink it, I mean Justin Drew Bieber had his lips there. So that’s what I did. I honestly went crazy. After that concert I entered the BieberFever contest to win a meet & greet at Justin’s show in Toronto. My mom told me that if i won it, she would take me to Toronto right away, without hesitation. She said that, only cause she thought I wouldn’t win. On Friday November 30th, I got a message from BieberFever saying that I had won! I started screaming, jumping, thanking God, kissing my family and crying even more. My mom couldn’t believe it, she asked me to read the email over and over again to be sure. When she finally realized this was true, she said, “Oh shit, now I have to take you there.” We arrived at the Rogers Centre in Toronto around 2 p.m. on December 1st. There were a lot of fans waiting for Justin, singing his songs and stuff. I was nervous, because I didn’t have tickets for the show. I was afraid they wouldn’t let me in the meet & greets. My mom and I had this sign, we were ready to wave it around the stadium to get a pair of tickets. The sign said: WE DROVE 7 HOURS FOR JUSTIN’. There wasn’t anyone from Justin’s crew, just fans. After, we walked by the box office and we looked for tickets. Even if they were section 500, I didn’t care, but we managed to buy a pair of tickets in section 123 row A! Then I saw Jon Chu, surrounded by fans and cameras. They were actually taping some stuff for the movie! My mom waved our sign, and this woman walked too us to interview me. I was in shock. Too much was happening in such a little amount of time. Just the thought of maybe being in the movie was so exciting for me! We finally got in line for the meet & greet. We saw Justin’s grandparents who walked by, followed by Pattie. I screamed “PATTIE!” and she turned around and I waved at her with a big smile, she did the same to me. She’s honestly so damn flawless and sweet! Finally my group was next. I turned around to see Alfredo, whom I haven’t seen in Montreal. I could see Justin behind the curtains, he looked happy, tired, and beautiful at the same time. When it was our turn, I went next to Justin and said “Hi.” He looked at me and said, “Heyyy hey hey.” I wrapped my arm around him, and he wrapped his around mine. The people in my group were taking hours to place themselves, so me and Justin literally stayed a few seconds holding each other around our waists. I looked at him and he had that big smile on his face, I was dying inside. I could have talked to him, but I was busy contemplating his face. When me and my mom got out of the meet & greets, Alfredo was still there with his camera. My mom told me to go and say something to him, cause she knows how much I love him. I told him I came all the way from Montreal to see Justin, he really seemed amazed. I had a little conversation with him and my mom. He is so caring and cute. I totally understand why him and Justin are so close, he’s a great guy. My mom kept fangirling cause Justin touched her hand. It was kind of funny, I mean she’s 40-years-old . The concert was as amazing as the Montreal one. Justin was definitely happy and excited. Justin sang ‘Right Here’ live for the first time with Drake. I went crazy, I love them both so much. I felt like a proud Canadian . Those two days will always be stuck in my heart, I’ll never forget them. I’ve met so many fans, had a lot of great times and experiences. I will always be grateful for everything that happened. Thank you for reading this. Hope it gave you guys hope that dreams DO happen. If mine became reality, yours will too. -Maryam (@ShawtyManeMtl) Here is the original post: I’m Maryam from Montreal, Canada. Before telling you guys about…
This case is so sad. Prosecutors are now adding kidnapping and murder charges against Brenda Stokes Wilson, the woman last seen with Jade Morris . Via NYDailyNews reports : Blood was found inside a car borrowed by a Las Vegas Strip card dealer last seen with a missing 10-year-old girl and later arrested in the razor blade slashing of a co-worker at the posh Bellagio resort, a prosecutor said Friday. Brenda Stokes Wilson was identified in court Friday as the prime suspect in the slaying. “It’s no secret the defendant is the suspect in the murder of 10-year-old Jade Morris,” prosecutor Robert Daskas said as he convinced Senior Clark County District Court Judge Joseph Bonaventure to increase Wilson’s bail from $60,000 to $600,000 pending the filing of kidnapping and murder charges. Later Friday, Clark County coroner’s officials identified the body found Thursday as that of the girl, Jade Morris. Officials say she died of multiple stab wounds. The girl was last seen Dec. 21 with Wilson, who’d picked her up to go Christmas shopping. Family members say Jade had a close relationship with Wilson, who used to date her father. Wilson, 50, was arrested later that night after she was wrestled to the ground with razors in each hand following a face-slashing attack on a female co-worker, Joyce Rhone, at the Bellagio. She appeared in court in that case Friday, when a judge raised her bail to $600,000. Wilson has been jailed on felony battery with a weapon, burglary and mayhem charges that could get her decades in prison. Police said she has offered no help in the search for the missing girl. Murder and kidnapping charges could get her life in prison without parole or the death penalty. SMH what the hell could make you do such a thing to a child who trusted you? Clearly this woman snapped… But now she’s probably going to find out what it feels like to be on the other side of a shank once her fellow inmates get wind of who she is and what she’s done.
Though a Paramount release, Flight did not take the trajectory of a typical studio concept plucked from an internal idea bin. Screenwriter John Gatins began working on what would become the feature starring Denzel Washington and directed by Robert Zemekis earlier last decade on his own. While still new to Hollywood, Gatins, who first hit the scene as a writer on sports pics including Summer Catch and Hard Ball , sobered up. He took that experience and his fear of flying, to quietly craft the story that would evolve into Flight . The film, which debuted at the New York Film Festival in the fall and debuted in theaters in early November has cashed in with nearly $91 million at the domestic box office on a relatively modest budget – at least for Hollywood with a big star – of $31 million. On the Awards Circuit the film has won some attention including a Golden Globe nomination for Denzel Washington for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama and he may well be on the road to a nomination for Best Actor next month when the Oscar nominations are revealed. Gatins has also received some attention including Best Original Screenplay by the Broadcast Film Critics Association and a nomination from the Image Awards. Flight ‘s plane crash makes for good imagery in a trailer, but it really serves as a set-up for one man’s personal struggle with addiction and denial, which forms the crux of Flight . Washington plays pilot Whip Whitaker, who successfully guides a plane that experiences a mid-air mishap to the ground, saving nearly everyone on board. He’s hailed for his heroism by the media, but what eventually percolates to the surface during the investigation is missing on-board alcohol and a cover-up that Captain Whitaker, was in fact, legally drunk. Whitaker is a master at concealing his insatiable drinking and cocaine use and as media attention continues to follow him, he deflects what is clearly a hastening descent in his personal life. M.L. caught up with screenwriter John Gatins about what prompted him to start writing Flight who shared the turbulence his script encountered on the way to the big screen. He shares how he segued his way into “the business” after graduating from Vassar and facing his own fears of flying while making the movie. When I first saw footage of Flight before seeing the film at the New York Film Festival, I wondered if it would be a straight-up plane crash story or if there was more to it. Obviously there is much much more to it and was curious how this came about. Was there a personal element to it? I got sober when I was 25 and that was part of it. I think I was 31 when I started writing [ Flight ] and I did it for me really, I didn’t have a boss. I wrote it on spec and I honestly didn’t think it was a movie that would ever get made. I’m a scared flyer, but was flying a lot for work and shooting in Europe. It’s a personal project I’d pick up and put down and then kept working in my normal life, trying to feed my family. It was after I wrote and directed Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story for DreamWorks that they then asked me what I wanted to do next and then I said, “Well, let me show you what I have been working on and I gave them the first 40 pages of this script and they went, ‘Woah.'” Around when was this? This was around 2004 – 2005. And they thought this was pretty heavy-duty considering I had just finished doing this PG-13 movie for them and has a very complicated central character. And it was also at a time in the business when these kinds of stories weren’t just jumping off shelves onto the screens. R-rated grown-up dramas just became anathema. People kept saying that audiences just don’t’ want to see these movies. But clearly you kept going… Yeah, it was a hard time for it and I was trying to also direct the movie. So Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald came on as producers with me and I continued to work on the script and I finally had a version that we could sneak to a few people in 2007. The script had some big agents respond to it and they said there was some great talent that may be interested in [the starring role], but then the writers strike came along. There were so many things happening to go against this movie, but then it all changed when Denzel Washington got his hand on the script and he wanted to meet me. He told me he wanted a bigger director than me to handle this, which was understandable I guess… Some big actors only have a few guys or gals they want to work with. Then Robert Zemeckis got a hold of the script around the same time and those two connected and then the three of us connected. For everything that had gone wrong for so many years there was a moment in time when everything went right. Bob wanted to be very collaborative with me when making the movie. He said to come to Atlanta and I got to really be there and have a creative voice in it and it really was the best of all possible worlds. Talk about how you three collaborated. Did the script evolve much while you were working with Washington and Zemekis? It was kind of great. Before this, I had only known Denzel as his characters, I had never met him. His characters have this intense presence and in life he also has this presence. He does his homework man – he really does his homework. He was really with the 2007 draft he first received, but with every new draft there was, we kept him in the loop. He’s a guy who definitely started to carry that pain around. He was putting on those shoes so to speak to play the part almost immediately. It was great because for a lot of people this is a small movie, it’s a $30 million movie that we shot over 45 days all on location. It was a bit like making the school play at times, we all rolled up our sleeves to get this done. It was a small ensemble of actors and a small filmmaking crew. So there’s something very intimate about it. Denzel has gone out of his way to give credit to the script. And it’s been really nice for me honestly since I did work so long on the movie and he recognized that. What’s on the screen isn’t much different than what’s in that ’07 draft. Bob did some really smart things making me focus on the point of view. Did that ’07 script portray Denzel’s character as so focused despite his dependencies? I’ll tell you what really struck me about the story was how functional he was at least on the outside. Of course things are going south on the inside, but after the crash he receives notoriety and credit for saving lives and despite being in various states of inebriation all the time, he is able to handle himself in such a remarkable way at least publicly. I’ll tell you a story. my guilty pleasure is the New York Post and one day while doing the domestic junket out here I was reading Page 2 and there was this whole article about this huge rock star Cardiologist in New York who was being sued by his two ex-wives and, among a lot of things, they both alleged that he was high on cocaine all the time and that he failed four drug tests at the hospital and was high 24/7. And you think this is the guy you put your life into and he’s blazing on drugs. I mean, it’s remarkable and there’s this parallel to [Denzel’s character] Whip Whitaker who is so high yet functioning and walks this tight rope. Instinctively he’s the best guy to fly that plane, impaired or not. That’s what helped to create that weird conflicted ambiguity in the plane because you’re thinking, ‘Am I rooting for this character or not?’ If I was on the plane and he saved me and I knew he was the only one who could do that, I’d think I wouldn’t care what his mind was all about at that moment. I think that functionality almost made it more difficult for his character to come to terms with the addictions he was facing… They say for most people to want to make a change they have to hit a bottom in their life. For a guy like that to be able to do heart surgeries successfully or a guy to successfully fly a jet, then people continue to skate along in life. People often don’t change unless they have to. That happens sometimes when people wake up in handcuffs, or in a hospital or in a psych ward and they say, ‘what happened?’ It’s like, well all that managing you were doing with all these issues – it ran out. Your ability to pull it off and manage it just quit on you. And he’s an amazing dude that Whip Whitaker, he can do almost anything. Was there a progression in his personality from the original scripts to the final version? Was that functionality fully there? That functionality was always there because I felt that’s the thing that makes us conflicted. I always watch war movies and I would always think that if I was in a war, I’d have to drink every day with that constant drum of anxiety because I don’t know how I’d get through that experience of knowing someone is constantly trying to kill me. The men and women overseas right now, I just don’t know how they deal with that. I think pills or booze would calm my brain… But I think it would have been so easy to go down that path of Whip just being crazed… Yeah, yeah yeah… There are so many people who function at such a high level of – work hard, play hard. You see them Monday through Friday and then you catch that person on the weekend and you’re like, “Whoa!” How did you work in the mechanics of the crash? You must’ve had to research past incidents… Oh man that was crazy, that was crazy because I’m a nervous flyer. Those NTSB records are public record and they’re pretty dense but also equally fascinating. I also spoke to a lot of pilots and they pointed me toward different incidents. That must’ve been encouraging experience helping you to overcome being nervous flyer [laughs]. It was miserable [laughs] but fascinating at the same time. Denzel said something really funny when we were on a panel and they asked him what he thought about Whip being a pilot as opposed to something else and he said, ‘It’s the most dramatic choice John could’ve made. If he worked at the post office, it wouldn’t have been that big of a deal. You wouldn’t have gotten your mail. That’s different from being in a plane at 30,000 feet that’s dropping. But the research was fascinating. You can read the black boxes and some of them are very dramatic. Zemeckis is also a pilot and flies so he has a complete understanding. He loves to fly, but I hate to fly. While we were flying to Atlanta and back he’d be like, ‘Let’s work.’ We’d literally be working on the script while on the flight talking about a plane crashing while we’re on the plane. That math is never good for me [laughs]. Was the crash in the film based on an actual accident? There are a couple of accidents that it was based on. But there was a crash off Oxnard, CA in 2000. A pilot told me to look at that and it was fascinating. Air traffic control asked them to take the plane out over [Santa Monica Bay] so as to limit collateral damage on the ground. And they did fly it inverted but they put the plane back over and lost control. It was an un-flyable plane, it wasn’t their fault. They did an amazing job. And this pilot said that had they known what was really wrong with the plane, they might have known their only recourse was to keep it inverted and descend. It was really rough. Is writing one of your first passions? You were a drama major and you mentioned that you did many things including acting when you first moved to California… I think I’ve always been a storyteller. I’m Irish and we like to tell stories and I come from a family of storytellers and in storytelling there’s an element of performance in it. Arguing for ‘air-time’ at big family events requires that performance. So being the youngest of four I felt I had to perform. My first instinct then was that I wanted to be an actor, but when I was at Vassar, it was great because it’s very academic. I read so many plays, which gave me a great foundation which I didn’t realize until I had to access that as a writer. Writing was ‘easier’ because you just write by yourself. It’s not easy, but you don’t need permission. The first script I wrote I wrote on a legal pad, I didn’t even have a computer. What was your big entrée when you first arrived in California that kept you going or encouraged you to maintain that path? I had friends from Vassar who were starting to work in the biz. We were in our mid 20s and we got together for a poker game and this guy said to me, “You’re so funny man you should write a script. I’ll pay you to write this script once you get broke enough.” So the next day I contacted him and said, “I think I’m broke enough.” And he paid me $1,000 – $500 to start and $500 to finish – to write this crazy script about a kid in high school who fakes his own suicide. And that script was sold to Disney and it started it all off. It started my whole career. It was Smells Like Teen Suicide . It was great, it got me into a lot of rooms. People wanted to meet that guy who wrote that dark, dark teen comedy. What other genres would you like to tackle that you haven’t yet? Great question… I want to do a big comedy. It’s funny when I started out, even though Smells Like Teen Suicide was a dark movie, it was a dark comedy reaching for a laugh. Then I got into doing sports movies and was on that road for awhile and there’s comedy in that too. And actually, there’s a good amount of comedy in Flight . Yeah, I’d like to go for a big comedy at some point. I’ve made a family movie, sports movies and perhaps a sort of sic-fi movie. Flight is mostly an adult like grown-up drama. Denzel said, “Look it’s an R-rated movie and there are no guns. It’s different. We don’t make these movies anymore.” But, I have an idea to write a high school movie because I’m about to have a teenager who is going into high school. I feel like I have one more young voice movie in me, so we’ll see…
I can’t believe I’m sitting here writing a MBE right now. I’ve dreamed about meeting Justin for quite a few years now and I never thought in a million years I’d be so lucky to get the chance to meet him. I’ve been a fan since early 2009 and I can honestly say being a belieber has changed my life, for the better. Supporting someone as kind-hearted and down to earth as Justin has opened my eyes a lot. I can’t thank him enough. Re-typing my experience is going to bring back so many emotions, but here I go! My friend and I bought tickets to see Justin on the second night at Madison Square Garden. We had no expectations of meeting him whatsoever, but we went into NYC Wednesday night to do some lurking after the first show. We got to see Justin come out of the back entrance and he waved to us and that was that. A week earlier I had entered the BieberFever best collection contest , but I had very little hope. Around 12 a.m. on Thursday, I received an email from Bieberfever: “Congratulations Alexandra! You are…” I just got the BIGGEST smile on my face. No, I didn’t cry or scream, I just smiled so big and then called my friend to tell her. We were both so excited and we didn’t sleep at all that night. We just kept saying, “Wow we’re so lucky” and “No way is this happening.” Since we were so excited, we ended up being at MSG around 7:30 in the morning. It was cold, but so worth waiting around to see Justin. We went to the box office to pick up our wristbands a little later, and then headed to where we would be meeting him. We were the first people at the door waiting. We walked up the stairs and waited for about an hour while Justin met with the Make-A-Wish kids. He’s such a good person. Around 5:15, it was time. Justin was behind the curtains waiting and the meet & greet got a move on. I walked and I was like “Hi Justin” and he was like hey! I looked him right in the eyes and I was like, “Oh my gosh your eyes are GORGEOUS,” and he blushes and goes “Hahaha thank you!” and then we posed and took the picture. I was like, “Good luck tonight I love you!” and he looked right at me and goes, “I love you too!” I can’t even express to anyone reading this how normal Justin actually is. He literally is just a teenage boy living his dream. You could tell he appreciates the fact I could talk to him like a normal person, not just sit there and cry and scream in his face. Then as my friend and I were walking down the stairs, literally the two happiest girls in the moment, we realized we still have our wristbands on. We got the crazy idea to go in again, so we did . We ran over to the security by the door and pretended we were late, and they let us in again. We hopped back in line to see him again. The second time I walked in and we took the picture. Then he looks at me and goes, “Wait didn’t I just take a picture with you!?” and laughed. All I did was “Shhhh” and Justin had the cutest smirk on his face. I walked out and that was just the start of the best night of my life. Watching Justin perform at MSG was something I’ll always remember. I love you Justin! I know I’m lucky for getting this opportunity and for anyone reading this, DON’T GIVE UP. You WILL get a chance. Justin is worth it, I promise you. This could happen to anyone, and one day it will be you. Never say never. -@allieferdenzi Read more: I can’t believe I’m sitting here writing a MBE right…
