The Black Keys Blast Berlin

Band shakes up Germany’s capital on Saturday night with blistering sold-out show. By James Montgomery The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach performs in Berlin on Saturday Photo: Jakubaszek/ Getty Images BERLIN — The Black Keys are not a particularly verbose band; they are, however, an incredibly voluminous one. That lesson was learned during their blistering sold-out show Saturday in Germany’s capital city, which was short on between-song banter — frontman Dan Auerbach offered just a few “All right, thank you so much”s and drummer Patrick Carney was basically mute (though he is pretty funny on Twitter) — and long on the kind of smash-n-bash blues/garage/soul that has become the Keys’ near-patented racket. Drawing heavily from their breakout Brothers album and the equally successful El Camino, the duo, aided by backing band for extra oomph, tore through 90-plus minutes of sweaty, snarling stuff, a full-bore workout for their triumphant run of U.S. arena shows, which kicks off in March. (MTV News was in Berlin to catch up with the Black Keys for a special event we can’t quite talk about just yet …) But on this night, they also seemed to take additional inspiration from the venue they were playing: the crumbling, cavernous Treptow Arena, whose brick-and-mortar shell doesn’t disguise the fact that it once was a bus depot, an industrial bent that suited the Keys’ Akron, Ohio, roots just fine (check their 2004 Rubber Factory album for proof). Auerbach’s drawl on “Howlin’ For You” seemed just a little more raw, the guitars on “Next Girl” and “Your Touch” roared with diesel-powered authority, and Carney’s pounding on “Girl is on My Mind” recalled a chortling 8-cylinder engine. In other words, the Black Keys seemed perfectly at home, even though they were anything but. New songs like “Gold on the Ceiling” and “Little Black Submarines” crackled with energy and attitude (Auerbach’s solos in the latter did both), and older tunes like “Hold Me in Your Arms” — which made an appearance during their extended, mid-set session as just a two-piece — was streaked with soul (and some serious riffs, too). “Lonely Boy” careened along on a surf-tinged backbeat and fuzzy, gut-box guitars; “Tighten Up” was the rare moment of pure-pop sheen; and “Ten Cent Pistol” simmered with a smoky, sexy tension. All of those moments were positively devoured by the German crowd, 9,000 hearty souls who queued up around the block hours before doors opened, and fended off some seriously frigid temperatures — and snow — with beery cheer. (Germany has some rather lax open-container laws, to say the very least.) But they took that frenzy to an even higher level during the Keys’ encore, helping Auerbach hit the high notes on the swoony “Everlasting Light” (which was powered not only by the band, but a truly epic disco ball dangling overhead) and leaping for joy during “I Got Mine,” which extended into a ringing, reverbed jam before winding to a close. Of course, at the end, Auerbach simply thanked the crowd, Carney chucked his drumsticks into the audience, and the band exited stage right. The Black Keys may not be big on making speeches, but they don’t have to be. On most nights — this one included, far from home but still swaggering — they get by on raw power alone. SAG Awards Red Carpet Ruled By Pastels, Sexy Details

Emma Stone, Lea Michele and Angelina Jolie flaunt what they’ve got in couture on Sunday night. By Jocelyn Vena Angelina Jolie at the 2012 SAG Awards Photo: Getty Images The SAG Awards may honor actors and their hard work, but on the red carpet on Sunday (January 29), it was all about recognizing all of the hard work they put into their looks. At the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, the overarching trend seemed to be flaunting what you’ve got. For photos of the stars on the SAG Awards red carpet, click here. Zoe Saldana went light in a sequined white dress with a drop waist and floral detailing. Kristin Wiig’s look, though, had a bit of a split personality: Her pale-hued Balenciaga gown was decidedly glam thanks to tailoring that showed off her long, lean body, but her black metal choker was a bit too heavy and goth for the overall look. Two of the biggest divas on Fox’s “Glee,” Lea Michele and Naya Rivera, made pale colors look red-hot. Michele’s lavender Versace had a body-hugging bodice and thigh-high slit, while Rivera’s ice-blue dress was made even sexier thanks to a plunging neckline. Red also ruled the carpet. “My Week With Marilyn” star Michelle Williams was chic in a bright-red Valentino dress, which was cut right above the ankle. Her ladylike look was capped off with lace detailing along her sleeves and neckline. “Dexter” star Jennifer Carpenter also opted for a red-and-lace red-carpet look. Using a similar color palette, Sofia Vergara’s hot pink, strapless Marchesa gown was super hot. Her “Modern Family” co-star Julie Bowen went Grecian in a purple gown. Emma Stone, Angelina Jolie, Tina Fey and Ashlee Simpson decided that a little black dress wasn’t too simple for Sunday’s show. Jolie played up her inner vixen in a Jenny Packham halter gown with a draped neckline. Meanwhile, Stone went quirky in a three-quarter-length strapless black dress with lace details. “The Help” star played up the fun aspect of the Alexander McQueen design with platform shoes. Simpson, meanwhile, looked like a character right out of boyfriend Vincent Piazza’s show “Boardwalk Empire” in a ’20s-style Jenny Packham gown with sequins and see-through fabric along the neckline. Fey brought the “va va voom” in her black strapless column dress: It was all party on top — with grey and black shades — and business at the bottom in a plain black fabric. The guys didn’t disappoint, either. Fellas like Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Jonah Hill kept it classic and simple in tuxedos, choosing ties over bowties. One guy, however, had a little fun with it, and that honor went to “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who wore a blue pinstripe suit with a matching blue-velvet bowtie. R.I.P. Soap Actor Commits Suicide After Being Forced To Put His Dog To Sleep, Leaves Note Saying “I Betrayed My Best Friend!”

This is so sad… Anyone who has ever truly loved a pet should be able to feel this guy’s pain, but suicide seems a bit extreme. Doesn’t it? A down-on-his-luck soap-opera actor took his own life this week after he was forced to put his beloved dog to sleep under pressure from his Upper West Side condo and became wracked by grief, pals said. Nick Santino euthanized his dog, Rocco, Tuesday — on Santino’s 47th birthday. That night, his guilt over the gut-wrenching decision became too much to bear. “Today I betrayed my best friend and put down my best friend,” a despondent Santino wrote in a suicide note, said close friend Stuart Sarnoff. “Rocco trusted me and I failed him. He didn’t deserve this.” The Brooklyn-born Santino — a struggling actor whose TV credits include “All My Children” and “Guiding Light” — adopted Rocco from a shelter several years ago. The man, raised in an orphanage and foster homes, soon began to write about his pet on Facebook, writing, “I did not rescue Rocco, Rocco rescued me.” But in 2010, his building at 1 Lincoln Plaza announced strict new dog regulations, including a ban on pit bulls. The ban didn’t apply to pit bulls already in the building, but friends and neighbors said Santino began to be harassed. “People were complaining about his dog,” said neighbor Kevan Cleary, 63, an adjunct professor at Brooklyn Law School. “It was open season on him.” Rocco couldn’t ride in the main elevators and wasn’t allowed to be left in the apartment alone for more than nine hours. Santino was then threatened with a $250 fine for having a barking dog, neighbors said. “The dog was not a barker, but somebody complained that the dog would bark,” Cleary said. “He felt like he was in this battle because he was the only guy in the building with a pit-bull mix,” Cleary added. Another neighbor, Lia Pettigrew, who runs a pet-care company, said, “Everybody knows that he had been harassed by the building management.” The building’s management refused to comment yesterday. After months of increasing anguish, Santino had the healthy dog put to sleep Tuesday. Neighbors said a tearful Santino brought dog treats to the building’s doorman and said: “Give these to the other dogs. Rocco is no more.” Dog owner James Steven Grant said Santino left two rawhide bones on his doorstep and earlier was seen tearfully giving away Rocco’s fluffy bed. “Rocco was the sweetest dog in the world. Rocco wouldn’t hurt a fly,” Grant said. A veterinarian told Santino that Rocco was becoming aggressive — and Santino blamed it on his own depression. He spent Tuesday in agony over what he had done to Rocco. “He was distraught and remorseful about putting down his best friend,” Cleary said. The last phone call he made was to a former girlfriend at 2 a.m. Wednesday. Later that day, police found his body in his bedroom. He had overdosed on pills. Rocco has been cremated, and friends said Santino’s remains will be, too, and they will be reunited. “One way or another, their ashes will be together forever,” Sarnoff said. Damn… Guess this guy didn’t take any comfort in the phrase “All Good Dogs Go To Heaven.” We are so sad over the loss of both of them. Those neighbors and the building management sound like some real a$$holes. Source More On Bossip! For Discussion: Is Drake Crossing The Line By Constantly Dating His Peers’ Ex-Girlfriends? Madonna Calls M.D.N.A ‘Action-Packed’

Queen of Pop tells MTV News most of her upcoming album is more ‘high-energy’ than award-winning ‘Masterpiece.’ By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: MTV News Madonna has teased fans not only inadvertently with a leaked demo of her first single for “Gimme All Your Luvin,” but also with “Masterpiece” (which also appears on the soundtrack for her film, “W.E.”) . So far it seems that the two very different tracks show the two very different sides that the Queen of Pop is pursuing on her next studio release, M.D.N.A. While “Gimme” plays up Madge’s playful, upbeat persona, “Masterpiece,” as she explained to MTV News, is a different story. ” ‘Masterpiece’ is one of the few kind of more down-tempo songs, more reflective,” she told MTV News at the New York City premiere of “W.E.” “I think the majority of the record is more action-packed,” she teased. “More high-energy.” It seems, then, that what fans have heard of “Gimme” is more of what they will hear on the album. The album will reportedly get a March release date. It features production from Martin Solveig on its lead single, which gets some presumably sassy assists from two fierce female MCs, Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. Both ladies will reportedly take the stage with the pop icon to perform the track at the Super Bowl halftime show . Madonna also worked with longtime collaborator and Ray Of Light producer William Orbit , who produced the Golden Globe-winning “Masterpiece.” “We’ve worked on stuff for so many years that we kind of finish each other’s sentences. He knows my taste and what I like,” she explained at the premiere. “Magic happens when we get into a recording studio together.” At the Globes, Madonna recalled how “Masterpiece” came together. “[My manager Guy Oseary] harangued me for the entire time I was filming and editing my movie to write a song,” she said during her acceptance speech for Best Original Song. “And I said, ‘Please, Guy, I’m trying to focus on being a director and I want people to pay attention to the film and I don’t have time.’ So then I finished the film and I started making my record and somehow magically and miraculously the song emerged, ‘Masterpiece,’ so thank you, Guy Oseary, for being so irritating.” What are you looking forward to on Madonna’s next album? Paula Deen Chows on Burger on Vacation

Paula Deen is on a vacation … and going to TOWN on a burger! The Food Network star, who recently revealed she has type 2 diabetes, was photographed eating a burger and fries Monday on a Caribbean cruise ship with her fans. Deen, 65, is taking heat from critics, such as Anthony Bourdain , who say she has profited from her indulgent cooking and recipes while keeping her condition secret . This story is not likely to douse that fire. While diabetes isn’t a sentence to life without burgers, eating a healthy diet is one way to manage it … which makes Deen’s admission all the more baffling to some. As Deen made her announcement, she also partnered with drug maker Novo Nordisk to launch a new site, Diabetes in a New Light, offering diabetes-friendly recipes. Then she turns around and inhales a juicy burger. Nice. Deen says she’s cut back on sugary/fatty foods, and that “I want to try to get across moderation,” she says. If that’s true, shouldn’t she … eh, forget it. Tell us: Does Paula Deen set a terrible example?

Madonna Has ‘Fingers Crossed’ For A ‘W.E.’ Oscar Nod

‘I would be really grateful if it did [get nominated], but if it doesn’t, I got the Super Bowl,’ she tells MTV News at ‘W.E.’ NYC premiere. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — With Madonna’s “W.E.” taking home a Golden Globe just over a week ago (her “Masterpiece” won Best Original Song), much of the buzz at the film’s NYC premiere Monday night (January 23) was about the upcoming Oscar nominations. “Well, the Oscars, the nominations are coming out tomorrow, and fingers crossed, I hope my movie gets nominated for something,” Madonna told MTV News on the red carpet. “I would be really grateful if it did, but if it doesn’t, I got the Super Bowl — keep on going,” she added, looking forward to her halftime performance at the February 5 game. “Masterpiece” is on the short list for the Oscars , along with Elton John and Lady Gaga’s “Gnomeo & Juliet” soundtrack tune “Hello Hello” and songs from will.i.am, Mary J. When “Masterpiece” won the Globe, Madge thanked a number of her cohorts, including manager Guy Oseary, who was at the “W.E.” premiere Monday; the song’s producer, William Orbit; and the producer of “W.E.,” Harvey Weinstein. “This is a surprise,” she told the room, clutching her prize. “Thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press for this acknowledgement. I need to thank my co-writers, Jimmy Harry and Julie Frost, my co-producer William Orbit, who’s not here, whom I adore.” When Madonna takes the Super Bowl stage next month, her performance will reportedly be “imagined” by Cirque du Soleil and Madonna’s longtime choreographer/ creative director Jamie King. The event may also feature appearances from her “Gimme All Your Luvin” collaborators, including Nicki Minaj. Fedde Le Grand Talks Remix Anthems, ‘Dark Light Sessions’

‘Music and the whole process of music itself should be organic,’ Dutch DJ/producer tells MTV News. By Adam Stewart Fedde Le Grand Photo: Flamingo Recordings A course in Fedde Le Grand 101 would have to include the hit “Put Your Hands up for Detroit” and a track that proved to be dance-floor gold for the Dutch DJ/producer, 2007’s “Let Me Think About It.” But Le Grand loyalists know that he scored those smashes while appeasing the underground with bombs like “Amplifier” and “Control Room.” Now, he’s bringing that particular alchemy to his “Dark Light Sessions,” a new show on Sirius XM’s Electric Area. MTV News recently caught up with the Flamingo Recordings founder, and he talked about the kickoff of “Sessions” last November. Le Grand also opened up about his big 2011, detailing how he’ll top himself in the months to come. “Not everyone can come to your shows,” Le Grand told us of creating the radio series, which launched its third installment last Friday; the next is due mid-February. “I think it’s such a great way to show or let people hear your view on music at the moment, because it’s very current.” The advent of “Dark Light Sessions” was a fitting cap to a major year for Le Grand, whose massive re-works topped the Beatport.com charts on more than one occasion. His 2011 was highlighted by remixes of Coldplay’s “Paradise” and his summer anthem “So Much Love,” a remix of “Love’s Such a Wonderful Thing” by the Real Thing. Of “So Much Love,” Le Grand explained, “I found the original sample from the ’70s band. I just loved the re-work Tom Bangalter did before it was one of my favorite tracks. So, for me, it only made sense to put it more in a ‘now’ kind of way, so I could play it again. We were able to clear the original sample and that’s how it started.” While sampling and bootlegging are key tools for the thriving dance music industry, the SOPA (or Stop Online Piracy Act) legislation could have far-reaching consequences for the genre. Le Grand said he encourages practices like sampling, though, and the growing desire to reincarnate classic dance tunes. As an example, he pointed out Arno Cost’s “Body Rum,” which is derived from a bootleg of Le Grand’s “Metrum.” “I actually only support it. I play that edit; I think it’s great,” he said. “Music and the whole process of music itself should be organic,” he added. “I had the same thing about two years ago with a track I did called ‘Amplifier.’ Someone put a vocal on it and it kind of went its own way. So I think it’s great that things keep evolving and recycling that way.” But it isn’t just bootlegs and remixes that are keeping Le Grand busy these days. Along with label co-founder and fellow producer Funkerman, the Flamingo Recordings imprint has helped usher in some of the most influential music the genre has heard in years, staying away from the all-too-familiar progressive house blueprint. Joining Flamingo alumni such as Baggi Begovic, Rene Amesz and vocalist Mitch Crown is recent sensation Deniz Koyu , whose records are currently smashing eardrums the world over. When Le Grand first heard Koyu’s “Grunge,” he assumed he had been signed for years. “My mind was just blown by the sound and everything. It’s a record that works really well and still has a coolness to it,” he said. Le Grand and Koyu have been busy in the studio with Johan Wedal getting ready for the release their latest three-way collaboration, “New Day.” And one can only imagine who the boys brought into the studio behind closed doors “I have a whole lot of people I’d love to work with,” Le Grand said, listing Sia and Janelle Mon

Taye Diggs aka “sexual chocolate” says that he did not accept his skin color until he saw model Tyson Beckford’s rise to fame. The actor/author says that he did not think he was good looking at first because he had a complex about his skin color: “When I got into high school I started to hear, just from the black community, everybody is more attracted to the light skin girls and the light skin dudes with the light eyes,” he said in an interview with MyBrownBaby.com . “And from within the race the light skin black people and lighter brown people would make fun of the darker people. So then it was a completely different kind of struggle.” “And then funnily enough it was when dark skinned men, and this was just from my perspective, there seemed to be a shift where all of a sudden we saw Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, Tyson Beckford. I’m still trying to figure out how this came to be. For me, when I saw Tyson Beckford hailed as this beautiful man by all people, that caused a shift in my being,” he added.” Taye who is now a father of a 2 year-old bi-racial son recently published his children’s book Chocolate Me , which encourages youngsters to accept who they are.
