For Discussion: TIME Magazine Excludes Hollywood Starlet Lupita Nyong’o From Their “Most Influential People” List…Do You Agree?

Both Lupita and transgendered “Orange Is New Black” actress Laverne Cox were both left off of the list. Should they have made the cut? TIME Magazine Excludes Lupita Nyong’o From Their “Most Influential” List Earlier this week, both breakout film star Lupita Nyong’o and superstar entertainer Beyonce were celebrated for landing atop People Magazine’s “Most Beautiful” list and TIME magazine’s “Most Influential People” list respectively, while snagging accompanying magazine covers to go along with their accolades. However, upon further inspection, it’s been revealed that while Lupita’s recent success has propelled her to the top of the entertainment and fashion industry for the larger part of 2013 and into 2014, it wasn’t enough to deem her “most influential,” according to TIME magazine. Since garnering rave reviews for her stellar performance in “12 Years A Slave,” Lupita has now become a household name and shinning success story to rival the best of them with an Academy Award , Golden Globe Award, Lancome Cosmetics endorsement, and countless recognition as a global fashion ambassador from all of the top designers under her belt all while flawlessly representing women of color who rarely receive the shine they deserve for their achievements in and outside of mainstream pop culture…but she still somehow hasn’t warranted the level of “influence” to land anywhere on the TIME magazine list. As she has only been on the mainstream radar for a little over a year now, perhaps this small time slot is what discouraged her placement on the list. But the impact that she has had on pop culture and American culture in general by single-handedly defying the standards of talent, beauty, and notoriety that much of mainstream America previously deemed necessary for the type of success she’s seen in the past year is undeniable…..and no doubt “influential” in more ways than a few. So, did TIME make a mistake in overlooking Lupita? Or has her level of “influence” simply been misconstrued? Let’s discuss.

THG Presents: The 10 Biggest Turkeys of 2013!

Happy Thanksgiving, THGers, from our entire family to yours. What would this uniquely American holiday be without family, food, football and appreciation for the things that matter most and what we’ve been given. In THG’s case, that means turkeys … in more ways than one. On this 28th of November, we’re paying tribute to celebs we had the honor and the burden of covering in 2013. We’re talking fowl individuals. Bird brains. You get the idea. Here are our Top 10 Turkeys of 2013 … Who will win THG’s 7th Annual Spencer Pratt Thanksgiving Turkey Award!? 10 (tie). Donald Trump . It’s not a matter of whether he’ll make the list. Just where he falls on it. After a relatively quiet 2013, the Donald takes the #10 spot. 10 (tie). The X Factor . So much hype. Such a mediocre show. 9. Teresa Giudice . Mortgage fraud was so 2005. Who gets in trouble for that anymore? Reality stars who live beyond their means? Okay, makes sense. 8. Twerking . We could’ve put Miley Cyrus on this list, as she certainly ruffled plenty of feathers, we’re going with the “dance” craze that she popularized. Seriously. You can’t unsee that kind of fowl behavior. 7. Rob Ford . A late entrant, but a worthy one. Just when you think you’ve seen it all from public officials, Toronto’s fearless leader lowers the bar. 6. Justin Bieber . Watch this guy’s yearlong meltdown and attempt to act hard is pretty tough to beat for entertainment, yet at the same time disheartening. 5. Farrah Abraham . What a run for the biggest (smallest?) bird brain of the bunch. Farrah Abraham as shameless as Kris Jenner, just less intelligent. Yes, she makes the Kardashian kingpin look smart. 4. Chris Brown . Even by Chris Brown standards, this year was a doozy for controversy, rage, hookups, legal woes, more rage and 24/7 gossip. 3. Obamacare Website . Honestly, Barack. You win the Supreme Court case and the 2012 election and you can’t event make the thing work? 2. Kris Jenner . Call her an entertainment mogul. Call her a “momager.” Call her a she-pimp for her evil spawn, of which there are just so many. By any name, she’s an embarrassment to society. 1. Kanye West . Whether he’s gushing over Kim Kardashian , fighting photographers or likening himself to Steve Jobs (or a slave), ‘Ye is relentless. Just don’t hate on his “art,” people. Bow down. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at THG!!!!

Must Be Nice: The Highest Paid Black Actors’ On Television (And Some Notable Others)

Black actors might demand big checks for work on the silver screen, but for TV, not so much… A List Of The Highest Paid Black Actors On TV Via Examiner Simon Cowell an executive producer and co-owner of “The X Factor” and “Got Talent” TV franchises, is ranked at the top of TV Guide’s list of the highest-paid TV stars of 2013. He made $95 million in the past year, according to TV Guide, which made the announcement on Aug. 20, 2013. The full list is in TV Guide’s Aug. 26 to Sept. 1, 2013 issues, which goes on sale on Aug. 22, 2013. Cowell is a judge on “The X Factor” U.S., which airs in the U.S. on Fox. According to TV Guide, Kelly Rowland (who joined “The X Factor” U.S. judging panel in 2013) is the next-highest-paid judge on the show: Her “X Factor” salary is $2.5 million per season. That’s about the same amount that TV Guide says Paula Abdul made as a judge “The X Factor” U.S. in 2011. Abdul lasted one season on the show before she was fired, along with judge Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones. Although TV Guide did not report the salaries of the other two “X Factor” U.S. judges of 2013 (Demi Lovato and Paulina Rubio), the Hollywood Reporter claims that Lovato’s “X Factor” salary was doubled to slightly more than $2 million (compared to her reported $1 million “X Factor” salary in 2012), while Rubio’s “X Factor” salary in 2013 is about $1.5 million. Sharon Osbourne (who is a judge on “The X Factor” U.K.) is also on the list, which ranks the stars’ salaries only for U.S. TV shows. Therefore, only Osbourne’s reported $1 million annual salary for co-hosting CBS’s “The Talk” was included for her inclusion on the list. Osbourne’s “X Factor” U.K. salary is about £1.5 million (or $2.35 million in U.S. dollars), according to the Daily Mirror and The Sun. Cowell and Howard Stern were each tied for No. 1 on Forbes’ 2013 list of highest-paid TV personalities list, which counted the stars’ total salaries from June 2012 to June 2013. Cowell and Stern earned $95 million each in that time period, according to Forbes. Suffice to say, all the folks that are REALLY breaking the bank on television are white, but you can hit the flippy to see where WE rank and just how far African-Americans still have to go in comparison to their paler peers. All salaries listed are per episode with the exception of daytime TV hosts. Images via WENN/Splash Continue reading

Highest Paid Actors: Who Tops the List?

This year’s ” Highest Paid Actors ” list has been released by Forbes and given the monster year Tony Stark had, it’s no surprise that Robert Downey Jr. tops them all. Banking an impressive $75 million is apparently not all that hard to do when your movie rockets to #3 of the highest grossing movies of all time, like  The Avengers did. Now that he’s signed on for more  Iron Man and  Avengers 2 , it won’t be surprising if Robert Downey Jr. makes numerous repeat appearances on this list in the coming years. However, this list teaches us that if you are going to make a movie about being a male stripper, go ahead and do so with a lot of your own money. Channing Tatum came in second to RDJ thanks to  Magic Mike  (just wait for the Magic Mike sequel ) and the fact he and director Steven Soderbergh bankrolled the film on their own. It’s always refreshing when the abs have brains. Rounding out the list were a few surprises, like Mark Wahlberg coming in at number four with $52 million thanks to Ted and Adam Sandler at number six with $37 million, no thanks to  Jack and Jill. Bringing up the rear comes Liam Neeson in the tenth spot with $32 million. Just goes to show, want to bank a fortune? Play a man chasing after his kidnapped family member or some variation on that theme, over and over.
