2019 Billboard Music Awards: Who Took Home the Top Prizes?

The 2019 Billboard Music Awards were held last night, and just like every year, the most popular artists took home the night’s top prizes. That’s not a knock against the show — the whole point is awarding the artists who sold the most copies last year. The BBMAs differ from other music awards in that there’s no voting and no panel of judges. It hands out prizes based on digital and streaming sales (and if there’s anyone out there buying physical copies of new music from new artists, we suppose that counts, too). It’s fine, we guess, except it kind of ruins the suspense, as everyone in the room knows the winner long before the presenter opens the envelope. (Also, isn’t selling the most copies already enough of a reward?) Anyway, as is so often the case at these ceremonies Drake was the night’s big winner , taking home 12 trophies to make him the most-awarded artist in BBMA history, with a total of 27 wins. He also delivered the night’s funniest moment, offering a shout-out to Arya Stark for killing the Night King — truly the top achievement of 2019 thus far. ‘Empire’ Recap: Cookie Breaks Teri’s Big News To Andre Hoping He’ll Fight For His Life

Read the rest here:

Source: FOX / Getty It’s the second to last episode of Empire Season 5 and tonight’s episode definitely did a good job of dragging out the, “Is Andre Seriously Going to Die?” saga. It looks like he is but again, you really never know on this show. Anyway, the episode starts with Lucious not wanting to accept that Andre is dying (he’s still the only one who knows out of the family). But Andre has accepted his fate and wants to die on his own terms. Lucious tells him not to do a dang thing until he talks to him first then he storms out. We see Dre carefully placing cards that he wrote out to all of his loved ones. Meanwhile, Cookie wants Teri to tell Andre she’s pregnant to give him something to fight for. Teri says she won’t say anything because she’s surprised that she’s even pregnant until she gets word from the doctor that everything is okay. Lucious gets into a minor car accident. It’s minor in the sense that he swerves off the road and hits a rail and keeps his life. He does get knocked out, though, and starts having dreams where he’s conversing with dead people from his past. Cookie’s cousin that he killed manages to tell him he ain’t ish, later on, he sees Shyne, and he even sees his dead father. The latter gives him the strength he needs to let go of Andre. Now we’re at a meeting at Empire with Becky, Giselle, and Patel. Jamal was supposed to be there but he’s on his honeymoon in Seychelles. Patel wants to know what’s up with the money and how is the tour doing. Then Thirsty interrupts with an Empire artist saying their checks didn’t clear. In fact, Empire checks are bouncing all over the place. It’s the feds again. They froze Empire’s assets. As a matter of fact, Megan, the leader of the pack, interrogates Cookie without a lawyer. Cookie demands a lawyer and Megan pokes at her about freezing Empire’s assets. Then she brings up Panama. She shows Cookies photos from her trip to Panama with Damon Cross and asks what happened between them. If Cookie snitches on Damon then Megan will unfreeze all of Empire’s assets. Cookie ain’t no snitch, and she ain’t no fool. Just the fact that Cookie is there without a lawyer is grounds enough to get her out of there. Cookie tells her straight where to go, too, before sashaying away. In the meantime, Becky, Giselle, and Andre, who isn’t even supposed to be working but everyone needs him, are trying to figure out what to do. Becky suggests throwing a new special concert, that is distinctly separate from the tour, where Empire artists are paired with non-Empire artists. There’s a venue that owes her a favor so maybe this could work. Now we’re the part of the episode where Lucious finally wakes up from his blackout to Thirsty calling and telling him he needs to get back to reality quick. Then we see a flashback of Cookie meeting up with Damon. He’s trying to get her to leave Lucious again. Cookie says she wants her hubby and her boys and the life they built, but she does tip him off about the feds since she’s feeling generous. Andre asks Kingsley if he can help whim reach Eddie Patel, who is literally at some billionaire boys club convention Silicon Valley. They have a quick exchange, and Kingsley says he won’t be able to get in because the billionaires don’t think too highly of him. He’s also skeptical of Andre asking for help. Andre says he forgives him and that he’s his big brother and that he needs him. That’s enough tenderness for Kingsley to wire him a crap ton of money, adding that it’s not half of what he owes empire, but it’s a start (later on we find out that Kingsley also gave him some leads on potential investors). Now it’s time for the special concert. Hakeem performs with Ty Dolla $ign. Tiana performs with Sevyn Streeter. And it’s a good night. Teri finds Cookie backstage and tells her that she got the test results back. She and Andre are expecting a healthy baby boy. Cookie asks when she’s going to tell Andre and Teri puts it off until tomorrow, obviously not knowing she may not have that long. Finally, the episode winds down with Lucious and Andre eating Andre’s favorite meal at a hotel, just before Andre plans to end his life. Cookie walks into her house and comes across the note he wrote her telling her about his heart condition and why he didn’t want her to know. She remembered where he said he was staying and rushes over there. She makes it in time just before Andre is preparing to take some pills, as Lucious watches tearfully, and busts everything up. She starts spazzing out on Lucious for letting their son kill himself so they have a moment where they argue. Then Cookie Dre that Teri is pregnant and that this is worth fighting for but the shock of Cookie already affected him negatively and he starts to have a heart attack and we end with them calling 911. Yup, they’re still dragging this out. Meanwhile, we just want to see if there’s a plot twist where Andre lives, or nah. The season finally ends next week. Josh & Anna Duggar: Their Long, Strange Road to Baby #6

Well, it's official — Josh and Anna Duggar are expecting their sixth child . Despite the fact that Anna pregnancy rumors circulate on social media pretty much nonstop, a lot of fans were still surprised by the news. You can count us among those who were taken off-guard by the couple's video announcement. Sure, the rumors are constant, but that's all the more reason they can usually be discounted. The situation has caused us to reflect on the bumpy road that brought Josh and Anna to this point. Here's a look back at how it all began, as well as the many challenges these two have faced along the way: 1. The Beginning Josh is the oldest of the Duggar kids, and he was the first of Jim Bob and Michelle’s children to tie the knot and start a family. 2. The First Grandkid No doubt Anna will always have a special place in her in-laws’ hearts for giving the offspring-obsessed Duggars their first grandchild. 3. Keeping Tradition Alive When Mackynzie (who’s now 9) joined the family, it looked as though Josh and Anna would follow in his parents’ footsteps. 4. D.C. Bound But the couple surprised fans when they moved to Washington. D.C. so that he could work as a lobbyist. 5. Keeping Up the Pace Two more kids — Michael and Marcus — followed soon after Mackynzie. 6. Doing the Duggar Deed Josh and Anna continued to welcome kids at the rate of one every two years, and they seemed to have the full support of both fans and his family. View Slideshow

Brad Pitt: Did He Buy Jennifer Aniston a HOUSE For Her Birthday?!

Well, it’s official — Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are legally single  according to court documents released in April. Sure it’s sad, but at times like this, it’s important to look to the future, or in Brad’s case — the distant past. Yes, we’re sure you’ve heard the rumors that Brad is back together with Jennifer Aniston . At first, these reports sounded like so much wishful thinking — nostalgic fans wanted these two to rekindle their romance, and now that they’re both divorced, the timing seemed perfect. Like so many others, we were quick to dismiss these rumors, but the more information that emerged, the more a reconciliation actually began to seem plausible. First, Brad admitted that he and Jen are talking again . Shortly thereafter, Pitt attended Aniston’s 50th birthday party . The latter move surprised some fans, as it was the first public indication of a friendship between the exes, and it was Jen, not Brad who was making the “bigger person” gesture. But apparently, Brad didn’t disappoint the birthday girl by showing up empty-handed. If you believe a new report from UK tabloid The Mirror , Brad “wanted to make a gesture to Jen that would go beyond her wildest dreams.” And he did so by repurchasing the house that the former couple lived in during their marriage and handing her the deed. According to The Mirror, Brad made the buy for a whopping $79 million (?!?!?!), and he surpsised Jen with the ridiculous gift at her birthday party. “When Brad and Jen split, losing their dream home worsened the heartache of their divorce and it was one of her biggest regrets not buying Brad out,” a source tells the outlet. We don’t even know where to begin with this one. Hopefully, we don’t have to tell you that it’s almost certainly BS. As Gossip Co p points, out Brad and Jen’s former home is on sale — but that appears to be just about the only factual accuracy anywhere in this article. In all likelihood, some desperate tabloid hack was alerted to the sale and decided to cook up a little fan fiction. In a way, you have to admire the shamelessness. But in another way, you have to be sort of pissed that they manipulated our emotions like this. A Pitt-Aniston reconciliation is like a Trump impeachment — millions have been praying for it, and fake news on the subject will not be tolerated! Audrey and Jeremy Roloff: Hear Little Ember Jean Talking!

Fans are begging and pleading to see Jeremy and Audrey Roloff return to Little People, Big World . That would be amazing. For now, followers can listen to their podcast and, of course, see their updates on social media. Jeremy has revealed that little Ember Jean is now talking, and shared the cutest video imaginable of her doing so.  “'Dhankoo dada' haha,” Jeremy begins his caption of this precious video. “Ember is starting to attempt every world we say,” he reveals. “But,” the proud father confesses. “This one is my favorite.” Well, it's both adorable and it mentions him. Of course it's his favorite. As you can imagine, Jeremy also used the opportunity to plug a new episode of his and Auj's podcast, Behind The Scenes . He writes: “P.s. new podcast dropped today and you don’t want to miss it.” We're sure that a lot of their fans are excited for a new episode; they've certainly done some interesting interviews. But most people's attention was fixated on the sweet little girl. (Ember Jean really isn't a baby anymore — at atlmost 20 months, she's a toddler) “Say: 'thank you, dada,'” Jeremy prompts his precious daughter in the video. He is holding her with one arm — something he won't be able to do so easily in a few short years. As he captioned, Ember replies with her best imitation: “Dhankoo dada.” Jeremy repeats her words, and then plants a kiss on one of her irresistible little cheeks. (Cuteness overload, folks) Up next, she babbles something that isn't super intelligible. Jeremy asks if she's requesting milk from her sippy cup. But it sounded to us like she was saying “cup” or “top.” We're sure that Jeremy knows his daughter better than we do, of course. But any of those words would be salient to the conversation, as Jeremy pops on the lid to her cup. Child development is a funny thing. Some children are fully conversant by almost 20 months. Others have yet to say their first word. Ember is somewhere in between, which is completely normal. Children reach different milestones at different ages because they are different people with different experiences. Ember is lucky to be surrounded by parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents who provide her with stimulation and enrichment. Of course, viewers don't get to watch Ember Jean grow and learn on Little People, Big World like they once could. Auj and Jer have offered up a number of explanations for why they quit the reality series. At one point, they suggested that God had called them to do something else — podcasting, apparently. Jeremy has also said that, since ha and his siblings never actually had a choice about doing the show, he felt it was time that he just … stop. He wouldn't be the first to make that choice. Molly doesn't even live especially close to Roloff Farms. And Jacob famously stormed off of the farm as a young adult, angry that he had been forced to do the show for as long as he was.

The Nuances of Black America Through the Lens of John Singleton

See the rest here:

Source: Aaron Rapoport / Getty T he timing of life’s peaks and valleys are unique depending on the individual in Black America, but the experiences themselves are synonymous. We all deal with the task of navigating through terrain specifically designed for us, yet not designed in our favor. The socioeconomic makeup of the cities we come from teaches us to be communal and operate in self-interest at the same time. The dynamic of our relationships includes a protective instinct as we care for each other in nuanced ways while playing tug of war over a certain type of respect from our significant others. We treat our close friends like siblings while keeping each other at a metaphorical arm’s length for fear of exposing our weaknesses, thereby giving too much power to anyone. Stepping into our individuality is a fight in and of itself as we reluctantly turn away from the mindsets and habits molded by our predecessors, in favor of new ideologies that fit our perspectives of the world we eventually encounter on our own accord. There’s a powerful duality that we inherit with our brown skin, and John Singleton was a master of explaining it through is directorial lens. The Duality of Black Men At 24, John Singleton put Hollywood on notice and South Central LA on display with Boyz n the Hood —a masterpiece that showcased the spectrum of young Black men versus the generalization of us, pumped through the propaganda machine known as American news. In the film, a gifted young boy named Tre hits the time limit on the safety of his mother’s nurturing embrace, and is transitioned into lessons on manhood through the guidance of his father. It’s a distinct adventure each Black man has to face. Those of us who were unfortunately raised without fathers received our lessons in manhood from the uncles, cousins, coaches, and various other “father figures” within arms reach. Regardless of the teacher, the lesson remains the same. The world doesn’t love you like your mother does, and it never will. When you jump off the porch and into society, you’re public enemy number one, and you’d better learn to be productive despite the burden. You’d better grasp that being a Black man is a job and it’s on you to find a way to carry its responsibilities, even if you get so frustrated that you end up punching the air. For every Tre there’s a Doughboy, a kind heart hardened by his surroundings. The good in him occupies an equal amount of bad. The good is what he wishes consumed him, and the bad is what he depends on for survival. How can you judge him for being balanced? Is it because he doesn’t look inviting? Is it because his charm comes with a hint of mystery? You can’t quite tell what he’ll do if you bring him the wrong energy, can you? Good, we make you feel like you should be on your toes around us because we live like that everyday. Those are instincts we need so we don’t end up like Ricky: robbed of our potential because we got caught slipping. The robbery of our potential doesn’t always end in gunfire. Sometimes it ends in losing that scholarship, or that promotion we had a shot at. If we’re not on point at all times, we’ll end up taking two steps back from the forward step we just took. Worst case scenario, we end up dead, never taking a forward step again. Exchange of Power As Love Language Just two years after releasing Boyz n the Hood , John Singleton gave us Poetic Justice , this time painting a picture of the complex relationship between young Black men and women. The film’s main character Justice lost her boyfriend unexpectedly to violence, leaving her skeptical of opening up again. Lucky, her love interest played by the late Tupac Shakur, had good morals, but didn’t understand how to engage a woman that required more than sweet talking and humorous wit. I can’t speak for women, but as a man I know what it’s like to give love and decide I didn’t want to anymore. Most men are guilty of that. Until a certain age, we don’t think much about how deeply some of our gestures resonate, and how traumatic it must be to impact someone emotionally, to just move on without thinking twice. I’m not sure if we do that because we’re afraid of being vulnerable, or because we’re as emotionally unintelligent as people say. Maybe it’s both, but either way, we’re a bit entitled with how we handle love. As we grow older, we encounter women who have developed a force field around their hearts, weary of repeating the same let downs that come from our fear of vulnerability. That’s where we butt heads. As men, we may have good intentions with the women we forge relationships with, but good intentions aren’t enough. It’s about consistent action, and creating a safe space for a woman to let her guard down. “I’m a Black woman, and I deserve respect.” – Justice, Poetic Justice Lucky and Justice challenged each other in that sense. On one hand, it’s perfectly natural to be protective of your feelings. It’s equally as natural to expect to be taken as you are, even if there’s potential to be better. Black men and women are everything to each other, even when we’re too stubborn to see it. We go through exchanges of power, until deciding to meet in the middle and understand the reasoning behind each other’s flaws. We saw the experience played out just as much in Baby Boy . The story of Jody, a 20-something Black man struggling to take ownership of his transition out of boyhood. He has two children by two different women, one of which he loves, and both of which he expects access to when he feels like it. Yvette, the woman who has his heart, displays the type of patience he doesn’t deserve. She provides for herself, maintains a roof over their son’s head, and still welcomes him with open arms although his presence is inconsistent. He’s quick to name the small things he does for her: buying groceries here and there, installing cable, and putting rims on her car—small gestures that to him say “I’m making sure you’re comfortable”, but they pale in comparison to what Yvette really wants. She wants to know they’re a family, that she can depend on him. Her frustration manifests in locking him out of the apartment. He hits back by refusing to fix her car. Small incidents, both of which are attempts to gain some sort of leverage. In the end they come together the minute Jody realizes that he can’t fight his woman until she bends to his will. He’s got to give as much as he’s hoping to receive, maybe even a little more. That’s the essence of being a provider. “If I’m insecure it’s because you made me this way, all you do is think about yourself.” – Yvette, Baby Boy The Black woman demands that we realize the power in our potential. She knows that her love for us doesn’t require her to settle for half of us. She welcomes being led, as long as we’ve actually got a direction in mind. The irony in that is it takes time to find direction, and maybe we’d like her to know that not having direction yet doesn’t mean we’re not in search of it. Optimism Versus Realism In Higher Learning , Remy and Malik show the juxtaposition of the mindstate most young Black men deal with at educational institutions. Malik is there on scholarship, while Remy is a senior on his way out. Remy is militant, and almost exhausted at the racism he sees daily. Malik is hopeful, a wide-eyed freshman aware that the institution he’s operating within has its own cultural barriers he’s got to work around. In a back and forth with his Black professor, Malik seems to expect a break because they share the same skin color. That is a distinct experience we have as Black people, so artfully showcased by Singleton through character dialogue. At times, we mistake support for a free pass. Racism is a great hindrance to our progress in this country, it’s an indisputable fact. Be that as it may, we still get in our own way at times by believing that when we see each other in spaces where there are few of us, that we shouldn’t hold each other to high standards. We sell each other short looking for the hook-up when it’s more productive to help each other earn what’s for the taking. “ I will continue to give you a difficult time, until you have proven that you deserve otherwise. Those are the rules of the game. Young man you have to rid yourself of the attitude that the world owes you something. You must strip yourself of that attitude, it breeds laziness.”  Professor Phipps, Higher Learning Meanwhile, Remy appears almost jaded at having a higher education, because the struggle doesn’t change. What good is a degree, certificate, or any other credential if at the end of the day, it’s our skin that determines how our trajectory? He’s not entirely wrong to carry these thoughts, but it’s dangerous to accept that reality. If we keep a bleak outlook on our potential then we’ll never move forward. We must embrace hope just as we embrace the survival mentality. Both are necessary, but neither is beneficial in excess. There are countless other movies and an iconic music video I can choose from and dissect, but the message is clear: John Singleton knew the value in helping us see ourselves, never shying from the stereotypes others may have run from. Instead, he revealed the beauty in our madness, and the genius in our ignorance. Black people aren’t perfect, nor do we come perfectly packaged. It’s our various dimensions that make us a galaxy worth learning and understanding, for the benefit of our own higher learning.
