BBC News – List of facilities ‘vital to US security’ leaked

A long list of key facilities around the world that the US describes as vital to its national security has been released by Wikileaks. The US State Department in February 2009 asked all US missions abroad to list all installations whose loss could critically affect US national security. The list includes pipelines, communication and transport hubs. Several UK sites are listed, including cable locations, satellite sites and BAE Systems plants. This is probably the most controversial document yet from the Wikileaks organisation. The definition of US national security revealed by the cable is broad and all embracing. In addition to obvious pieces of strategic infrastructure like communications hubs, gas pipelines and so on, it contains, amongst other things, a cobalt mine in Congo, an anti-snake venom factory in Australia and an insulin plant in Denmark. The US missions were asked to list all installations whose loss could critically impact the public health, economic security or national security of the United States. In Britain, for example, the list ranges from Cornwall to Scotland, including key satellite communications sites and the places where trans-Atlantic cables make landfall. “What the list might do is to prompt potential attackers to look at a broader range of targets” A number of BAE Systems plants involved in joint weapons programmes with the Americans are listed, along with a marine engineering firm in Edinburgh which is said to be “critical” for nuclear powered submarines. 'Targets for terror' The geographical range of the document is extraordinary. If the US sees itself as waging a “global war on terror” then this represents a global directory of the key installations and facilities – many of them medical or industrial – that are seen as being of vital importance to Washington. No wonder then that the Times newspaper in London has published the story under the headline “Wikileaks lists 'targets for terror' against the US”. Some locations are given unique billing. The Nadym gas pipeline junction in western Siberia, for example, is described as “the most critical gas facility in the world”. Continue reading the main story The Main Leaks So Far Fears that terrorists may acquire Pakistani nuclear material Several Arab leaders urged attack on Iran over nuclear issue US instructs spying on key UN officials China's changing relationship with North Korea Yemen approved US strikes on militants Personal and embarrassing comments on world leaders Afghan leader Hamid Karzai freed dangerous detainees Russia is a “virtual mafia state” with widespread corruption and bribery Afghan President Hamid Karzai is “paranoid and weak” Comments on the extent of alleged corruption in Afghanistan Chinese leadership was 'behind hacking of Google' Wikileaks cables: Key issues It is a crucial transit point for Russian gas heading for western Europe. In some cases, specific pharmaceutical plants or those making blood products are highlighted for their crucial importance to the global supply chain. Of course the critical question is that raised by the Times newspaper's headline: Is this really a listing of potential targets that might be of use to a terrorist? The cable contains a simple listing. In many cases towns are noted as the location but not actual street addresses. That, of course, is not going to hinder anyone with access to the internet. There are also no details of security measures at any of the listed sites. What the list might do is to prompt potential attackers to look at a broader range of targets, especially given that the US authorities classify them as being so important. It is not perhaps a major security breach, but many governments may see it as an unhelpful development. It inevitably prompts the question as to exactly what positive benefit Wikileaks was intending in releasing this document. Former UK Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind condemned the move. “This is further evidence that they have been generally irresponsible, bordering on criminal,” Mr Rifkind said. “This is the kind of information terrorists are interested in knowing.” added by: Itsbatman_Durr

Move Over Priest: Celebrity Preacher Eddie Long Faces Third Sex Abuse Claim

I spoke, personally, to a friend here in Atlanta that used to attend New Birth Missionary Baptist Church and grew up with Eddie Long in Baltimore, Maryland. He told that the inner circle of Long's entourage has always known about his passion and desire for young boys. One of the accusers was involved in a break in at the church last year. One of the things stolen was the Bishop's Iphone. The young man knew that the phone was the smoking gun because of the incriminating numbers and messages it carried. New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, with it's 30,000 members, has the largest African American congregation in the southeast region of the United States. I'm just not surprised. Don't ask me why, I'm just not. ___________________________________________________________ (Sept. 22) — A third lawsuit has been filed accusing Bishop Eddie Long of coercing young men in his Atlanta megachurch into having sex in exchange for cash and cars. The suit was filed today in DeKalb County Superior Court, in Georgia, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Earlier today, a spokesman for the pastor said the two other young men who have filed lawsuits against Long are out to stake their claim on his fortune and called the allegations baseless. The allegations against the leader of a 25,000-plus-member church are particularly explosive because of Long's outspoken views on homosexuality. The Southern Poverty Law Center calls the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church leader “one of the most virulently homophobic black leaders in the religiously based anti-gay movement” and noted that he has referred to homosexuality and lesbianism as “spiritual abortions.” In the lawsuit filed Tuesday in DeKalb County, Ga., the two men accuse Long of exploiting his influence to coerce the then-teenagers into sexual relationships with him for years. Johnny Nunez, Wire Image Two men have filed a lawsuit alleging Bishop Eddie Long, here in 2007, coerced them into sexual relationships when they were teenagers. The lawsuit says Long, 57, has a long pattern of “singling out a select group of young male church members” and using his influence to engage in “sexual acts and relationships for his own personal sexual gratification.” The suit says the pastor — leader of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in the Atlanta suburb of Lithonia — referred to the teenagers as “spiritual sons” and instructed them to follow their “master.” In exchange, they claim, Long introduced them to celebrities like film director Tyler Perry, according to The New York Times. Art Franklin told CNN the claims are nothing more than “a case of retaliation and a shakedown for money by men with some serious credibility issues” and are “definitely without merit.” Franklin noted that one of the accusers was arrested earlier this year and charged with breaking into the church's offices and stealing an iPad and an iPhone. The attorney for the men, Brenda Joy Bernstein, says the June 23 break-in was committed out of anger, when one of the plaintiffs discovered that Long had similar relationships with other young men in the congregation. “He lashed out,” Bernstein told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “But if it weren't for that act, we wouldn't know about this. He talked to his friends and learned Long had other 'spiritual sons.'” But not all of the church's members see it that way. Samuel Midgette, 40, said he doesn't believe the allegations, in part because of often Long speaks about his wife in glowing terms. “A man who talks about his wife as much as he do…I can't see it. Unless I'm blind,” Midgette told AOL News today in a phone interview. He said the men making the claims are likely after Long's money. “People don't believe this,” he said. “I think this is all about money.” The lawsuit charges that the abuse began when one of the men was 16. According to the suit, Long put the teenager on the church's payroll, bought him a Chevy Malibu and took him on trips to Turks and Caicos, New York and New Zealand. In New Zealand, Long “regularly engaged in sexual touching and sexual acts” with the teenager, the lawsuit says. Long “categorically denies the allegations,” his attorney, Craig Gillen, told The Associated Press. “We find it unfortunate that these two young men would take this course of action.” Gillen did not immediately return a call to AOL News. Bernstein says church officials knew about the abuse and failed to stop it. “They would do everything to protect the most powerful church in the Southeast,” she told the Times. Long's church hosts a program titled “Out of the Wilderness” that claims to help cure its participants of homosexuality. In 2006, when the family of Martin Luther King Jr. chose New Birth Missionary Baptist Church as the location for Coretta Scott King's funeral, civil rights leader Julian Bond refused to attend. Bond said King's widow supported gay rights and never would have wanted to be in the presence of Long. “I knew her attitude toward gay and lesbian rights. And I just couldn't imagine that she'd want to be in that church with a minister who was a raving homophobe,” Bond told told AOL's Black Voices in 2006. “And I couldn't see myself in my church either.” added by: keithponder

VMA White Carpet Covered In Plastic Until Stars Arrive

Staging supervisor Aaron Chawla has steam cleaners, vacuums in place in case of unexpected stains. By Kara Warner VMA white carpet Photo: Jonathan Goldner / MTV News With the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards mere hours away, everyone here at MTV is working overtime in preparation to make this year’s show the best and brightest ever. Earlier this week, the white carpet crew (a team of about 55) started assembling the soon-to-be star-studded area, built to capture this year’s theme, “Hollywood Mansion.” Crew members pulled 16-hour shifts during the five days for the five days leading up to the show. On Saturday, nearly 600 feet of white carpet were rolled out and promptly covered in plastic in order to prevent any unwanted sullying. Staging supervisor Aaron Chawla said he won’t be removing it until the last possible minute before the VMA Pre-Show begins. In the event of any unforeseen spills or stains, Chawla assured us his team has plenty of tools in place for quick fixes, including vacuum cleaners, Resolve, steam cleaners and, if all else fails, props that can be creatively placed over any stubborn markings. The worst possible substance to come in contact with the white carpet? Chewing gum. Adam Stewart, production manager for staging and light, agreed that gum is a challenge; he also mentioned colored liquids as potential hazards. He hopes that if celebs bring liquid refreshment along with them for their walk (

Linkin Park Will Take Over An L.A. Landmark For VMAs

We can’t reveal exactly where they’ll perform ‘The Catalyst,’ but here are some clues. By James Montgomery Linkin Park Photo: Warner Bros. The fact that Linkin Park are performing their brand-new single “The Catalyst” at the Video Music Awards isn’t a secret anymore, but just where they’ll be performing it is … and fans won’t find out until they tune in to the show on Sunday night. Here’s what we can reveal: Since LP will be performing the song for the first time on TV, and since the song itself is so positively ginormous, they’ve decided on a location that’s certifiably epic. And given the fact that the VMAs are being held in Los Angeles, producers — and the band — decided to take over a thoroughly iconic space. And … well, that’s about all we can tell you right now. “In previous years, we had such a terrific themes. Last year, we were in New York, and so there was a New York, ‘West Side Story’ through line to the show,” VMA executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic told MTV News. “So obviously, we wanted to do the same thing in LA. And we’re looking back towards another era — in the architecture of set and some of the performances — we’re thinking of iconic films from the ’50s and youth culture, and all of a sudden, this location became first and foremost.” Having decided on a spot, the VMA brain trust took the idea to Linkin Park, who signed off without a second thought. After all, they know the location well. “They were so excited, being an L.A. band, to be able to do a performance in a location like this,” Ignjatovic said. “It’s such a significant location to anyone who lives in Hollywood and Los Angeles. And we honestly can’t believe we got it.” With a location that matches the soaring soundscapes of “The Catalyst,” Ignjatovic and his crew set about finding an appropriately huge way to capture it all. Which, of course, meant plenty of eye-popping aerial shots. “It’s an epic song and an epic location, so, in true Hollywood cinematic style, you want to have breathtaking aerial shots,” Ignjatovic said. “The whole idea is scale and beautiful visuals. It fits perfectly with the song. It’s going to be awesome, trust me.” Where would you want to see Linkin Park perform “The Catalyst”? Share your ideas in the comments below. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Weezer’s ‘Memories’ Video Promises Skateboarding, Silly Hats

Clip featuring the cast of ‘Jackass 3-D’ premieres today at 5 p.m. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Matt Elias Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images The lyrics to Weezer’s new single, “Memories” (from their forthcoming eighth album, Hurley ) paint a picture of the band back when they first began playing clubs and trying to scrape together a living on the backs of the songs from their landmark self-titled debut. “I had been married for a few months and had been in school for the semester before that, and basically I had been away from the band and the rock world for a while,” frontman Rivers Cuomo told MTV News. “I was really missing it, and just sitting there alone in my room missing the fans and missing my band, so ‘Memories’ is about getting back in there.” So when they decided to shoot the video — which premieres Thursday (September 9) on MTV, right after an all-new episode of “Jersey Shore” — it’s no wonder the group decided to call some old friends. Those friends? Johnny Knoxville, Wee Man, Chris Pontius, Steve-O and the rest of the crew from “Jackass” (who also happen to have a brand-new movie, “Jackass 3-D,” hitting theaters in October). They got together for what “Jackass” director Jeff Tremaine calls “an old-school skate jam,” featuring a cavalcade of extreme tricks in and around an empty pool. Like most Weezer videos, “Memories” relied on unpredictability. “We’re kind of making it up as we go along, to be honest,” Knoxville told MTV News when we visited the set last month. “We brought funny hats and some Super 8 cameras. I think that’s the video. Are we over-selling it?” With the low-fi cameras and the rapid-fire editing, the “Memories” video closely resembles a DIY skate video from the ’80s — something the guys went for on purpose, starting with the location. “It really is a legendary spot,” Tremaine said. “It made sense once we decided what we were doing. It’s from ‘The Search for Animal Chin,’ a legendary skate video from back in the ’80s — ’87 or ’86 — that the Bones Brigade made. That was Tony Hawk’s team. They filmed in here, and it became an old, classic skate spot.” Don’t miss the premiere of Weezer’s “Memories” video on MTV, Thursday (September 9) at 5 p.m.

Imam Rauf’s NYT Op-ed Completely Ignores Ground Zero Mosque Polls

The Imam in the middle of the Ground Zero mosque controversy finally spoke about the issue Wednesday by publishing a New York Times op-ed without once mentioning the overwhelming public opposition to the location of this Islamic center. Somewhat curiously, he didn’t even refer to last week’s poll by the Times finding two-thirds of New York city residents against the building of such a facility two blocks from where radical Islamists killed thousands of innocent people almost exactly nine years ago. But that didn’t stop Feisal Abdul Rauf from putting a happy face on an issue that has deeply saddened much of the nation he is also a citizen of: We are proceeding with the community center, Cordoba House. More important, we are doing so with the support of the downtown community, government at all levels and leaders from across the religious spectrum, who will be our partners. I am convinced that it is the right thing to do for many reasons. Yes, but not with the support of the very community this mosque would serve. Let me remind the Imam of what the very paper he wrote in Wednesday reported just five days prior: The poll, however, reveals a more complicated portrait of the opposition in New York: 67 percent said that while Muslims had a right to construct the center near ground zero, they should find a different site. Most strikingly, 38 percent of those who expressed support for the plan to build it in Lower Manhattan said later in a follow-up question that they would prefer it be moved farther away, suggesting that even those who defend the plan question the wisdom of the location. Weeks prior, a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll found similar opposition nationwide. How could a man claiming his “life’s work has been focused on building bridges between religious groups” not recognize in his call for unity the overwhelming opposition to this mosque from the very people he says he wants to build bridges between? Shouldn’t the beginning of such a process be to validate the existence of powerful resistance and concern? By ignorning the volume and intensity of these sentiments, the Imam was actually offending those that possess them. Instead, he continued to make his pitch like a salesman ignoring negative feedback from his prospects: Our broader mission – to strengthen relations between the Western and Muslim worlds and to help counter radical ideology – lies not in skirting the margins of issues that have polarized relations within the Muslim world and between non-Muslims and Muslims. It lies in confronting them as a joint multifaith, multinational effort. From the political conflicts between Israelis and Palestinians to the building of a community center in Lower Manhattan, Muslims and members of all faiths must work together if we are ever going to succeed in fostering understanding and peace. Great thoughts indeed, but you can only convert your opponents by recognizing their existence. By ignoring them, you run the risk of further alienating those you claim to be reaching out to. With this in mind, if Times editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal had any input to what Rauf wrote before it was published, one has to wonder if he suggested to the Imam that it might be a good idea to mention last Friday’s poll. He may have balanced this by referring to the Times own editorial the same day wherein the Gray Lady spoke in favor of the mosque despite the poll’s findings. After all, the absence of both suggests regardless of the optimistic title “Building on Faith,” either Rauf had little faith his readers could handle the truth or he is refusing to face it himself. Whichever the reality, it didn’t paint a picture of a religious figure trying to build bridges.  As a result, this op-ed might act to further the divide concerning this mosque rather than unify a nation with many remaining questions about its possible construction.

Is Bloomberg Supporting Ground Zero Mosque for Business Reasons?

In recent days, New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg has become a beloved press figure as a result of his unshaking support for the Ground Zero mosque. Isn’t it fascinating how in this environment where rich people are being demonized at every turn all you need to do is a support a popular liberal cause and your financial sins are instantly forgiven? With this in mind, the good folks at Big Journalism have uncovered some rather startling financial connections between this media mogul and the Arab world that haven’t raised any eyebrows from journalists that love to follow the money when there’s a conservative at the other end of the smoking wallet. Consider the uproar last week surrounding News Corporation’s contribution to the Republican Governors Association. As you read Mondo Frazier’s marvelous piece  “Follow the Money: Could Mayor Bloomberg’s Media Business Interests in the Middle East Have Anything to Do with His Support of the Ground Zero Mosque?” ask yourself why the seemingly always curious press have ignored any examination of this billionaire’s motives: On October 2, 2009, The Dubai Chronicle reported Chairman and President of Bloomberg LP Peter T. Grauer met with UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum at Maktoum’s Emirate office. According to the Dubai Chronicle, Grauer gave a presentation of Bloomberg future expansion plans in the ‘area of business information’ in the United Emirates, North Africa, and India. Grauer stated the UAE was a great place to expand, the UAE’s “logistic facilities” the ‘biggest incentive for investors and companies to expand their businesses in the country and the region beyond’. “Particularly since the meltdown of the western capitalist system, there has been an increasingly large focus on the virtues of Islamic finance. Today, there is no one single provider of information that caters to the Islamic finance market. So by Bloomberg being here, we are in the process  of building out an Islamic finance product. We are very confident that we can build a product that meets the needs of the market right now.” -Max Linnington, Regional Head of Bloomberg Middle East and South Asia on the company’s plan to build a Bloomberg hub in Dubai at the Dubai International Financial Centre(DIFC), October 29, 2009 But there’s more: On March 10, 2010, the Khaleej Times reported Bloomberg Set for Dubai expansion in bid to double revenues by 2014 . “Bloomberg, a leading global provider for financial data and news services, plans to “significantly boost regional operations from its Dubai hub as it is bullish about growth prospects of the emirate as a global financial center, a top executive said.” The coincidences continue: the Mayor’s company is banking on “doubling revenues by 2014″ in a region that just happens to be largely populated by Muslims. As I said at the top, this is the kind of smoking gun the press would normally attack like a pack of hungry wolves. Couldn’t all the international publicity Bloomberg is now getting for being America’s foremost supporter of this mosque be doing wonders for his position in the Arab world? Mightn’t that dramatically help his media company’s push into this region? Why hasn’t this gotten the kind of coverage News Corp’s contribution to the RGA got last week? After all, the point made by folks on the Left was that News Corp’s reporting can’t possibly be taken seriously if it’s making such a large donation to one political Party. Shouldn’t the same be true for Bloomberg? If his media company has recently invested time and money in the Muslim world, and could benefit tremendously from the favorable publicity he’s getting concerning his advocacy of this mosque, shouldn’t his veracity be similarly questioned? This seems especially the case given further revelations about News Corp’s connections to Saudi billionaire Al-Waleed bin Talal. For those that missed it, former Bush administration official Dan Senor was on Fox & Friends Monday, and he made a comment about Al-Waleed’s financing of the Ground Zero mosque. This led liberal media members – including Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart – to point out that Al-Waleed is the biggest shareholder in News Corp. Missing in this newest Fox News gotcha was that it actually demonstrated FNC’s ability to separate the interests of its largest investor from its reporting. Think about it: if Fox was doing Al-Waleed’s bidding, its hosts and contributors wouldn’t be attacking a mosque their largest investor was funding. That would quite literally be biting the hand that feeds them. Quite the contrary, as the news outlet that has been the most outspoken against the location of this Islamic center, Fox has taken a position that can’t be at all popular with its largest shareholder. Maybe someone should inform Stewart and all the other Fox haters in the media of this delicious dichotomy. Which brings us back to New York’s mayor: if the press think FNC is incapable of separating its reporting from its political contributions, shouldn’t they have similar concerns that Bloomberg can’t separate his business interests from his mayoral decisions? Or do such conflicts of interest only arise for conservatives?
