The first promo for The X Factor season 2 asks viewers if they’re ready for a pair of very famous new judges. But what about those judges themselves? Demi Lovato and Britney Spears sure sounded ready today when they touched down in Austin, Texas for their very first round of auditions. “So excited to be going to Austin this week for @TheXFactorUSA auditions!” Spears, who was accompanied to Austin with Jason Trawick , Tweeted. “Will I see any of y’all there on Thurs or Fri?” Added Lovato via the same social network: “It’s my first day… woo hoo!! Who’s coming??!!! #XFACTORUSA.” Approximately 200 hopefuls will face Demi, Britney, Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid during four three-hour show tapings over the next couple days. And from there, it’s off to another city… and then another… and then another. Which of the new panelists has you most excited?
Spears says she wants to ‘inspire’ contestants on the Fox show. By Jocelyn Vena “X Factor” judges L.A. Reid, Demi Lovato, Simon Cowell and Britney Spears at the FOX Upfront Photo: Desiree Navarro/ Getty Images Britney Spears seems poised and ready to sit beside her fellow “X Factor” judges on the revamped second season of the show . At the Fox upfront this week, the singer appeared alongside fellow newbie Demi Lovato , as well as returning judges Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid, and gushed about the Fox reality show. “Just really being able to be there and inspire the other contestants … they’re so young and they’re trying to fulfill their dreams,” she said at the event. “It’s just a whole beautiful concept. It’s just really cool.” While her negotiations with the show had been making headlines in the weeks leading up to the official announcement, Cowell brushed off all the hoopla, which includes a rumored $15 million payday for joining the show. “A force of nature, I was somewhere in the middle, but I’m thrilled. I love these guys,” he said of getting everyone, including Spears, on board. “I charmed her.” Spears seemed equally taken with the prickly Brit. “He’s adorable. He’s completely adorable. He didn’t have to try hard,” she admitted. Spears’ addition to the show is hardly the only casting making news: Lovato also opened up about having the “X Factor.” While little is known about the final hours going into locking Lovato in for the show, she’s rumored to be taking in $1 million, according to Gossip Cop . Lovato was on a short list of possible contenders to appear on the show that also reportedly included Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne. “I’m so excited to be here,” she said. “I guess you called,” she added with Simon by her side. “And that’s how it got set up, just a phone call.” In addition to getting warm and fuzzy about each other in the interview, Cowell shared that the judges will be filming in the next couple weeks when they hit up Austin, Texas, to begin scoping out talent. And if you think the claws might come out then, Reid assured viewers that that won’t be the case. “Oh no, we’re gonna be really sweet to each other,” he said. “Nothing controversial. It’ll be perfect.” Related Artists Britney Spears
Experts break down Lovato’s casting on the Fox reality show to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: MTV The world is still reacting to the now-confirmed news that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato will sit together at the “The X Factor” judges table this fall . While their spots on the show remain among worst-kept secrets in recent memory, these two former Disney princesses will now set out to prove they are savvy enough to judge up-and-coming talent on the Fox competition series. While L.A. Reid, Simon Cowell and Spears bring decades of experience with them to the show, Lovato, only 19, may seem too much like a rookie on the surface. But, she’s already amassed the kind of experience performers triple her age could wish for. She’s released three albums, which have all landed top-five spots on the Billboard 200. She’s starred on the hit Disney series, “Sonny With a Chance” and was the female lead, alongside the Jonas Brothers, in both “Camp Rock” films, which were incredibly successful for the Mouse House. All the success at such a young age makes Lovato a perfect pick for the show. “They’re looking for female pop singers who can engage a younger audience,” Monica Herrera, a senior editor at Rolling Stone, told MTV News. “Demi seems like a good choice because she hits not just music fans, but TV fans and I think they’re kind of trying to find somebody who can hit all angles.” She may have tons of teenage Lovatics, but Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts/retail at Billboard, added that she still hasn’t yet permeated the adult market, which makes this the right time to make this move. “I thought it was interesting choice just because, I mean, she is a star, but she seems a bit under the radar to a degree so this is a great look for her because it’s going to elevate her visibility and give her a whole new audience and a great platform to introduce new material,” he said. “I think it’s a great opportunity for her to really expand her fanbase. I think a lot of people are going to discover Demi for the very first time.” And, that’s why, Herrera adds, she needs to strike while the iron is hot. “I think it’s definitely a smart move; I don’t think she can afford to wait at this point. I think that is kind of a way to jumpstart it and really get herself out there,” she explained. “Obviously she’s gonna want to put out an album timed to the fall show. She’ll have the team behind her to really kind of maximize this opportunity and put out a single and an album that will kind of get the lift that she really needs right now.” Caulfield notes that Lovato will serve as the perfect answer to Spears . “Demi, considering her history and frankly her years of experience, she’s gone through the ringer,” he said. “Demi is probably going to have more realistic commentary, probably not harsh but probably coming from the point of view of ‘I did this before.’ Certainly her and Britney have the X factor, that something about them that makes them stars, it’s hard to pin down. I think it’s going to be good. I think they’re both interesting choices.” So for anyone wondering if Lovato is still too young to mentor, well, Herrera says they should put those concerns aside. “I really think it does [help that she’s young], especially since they are skewing younger and younger with the contestants. I think someone like Demi would have been perfect for someone like Rachel Crow [who competed last season]. She obviously knows what it’s like to be thrust into the spotlight in that way from a really young age,” she said. “I really think that she can be that guiding force.” Do you think Demi Lovato has the “X Factor,” or is she too young? Demi Lovato and Britney Spears met the press yesterday. Officially announced as season two judges on The X Factor , the singers posed for photos and greeted journalists and advertisers at the FOX Upfront in New York City – and Lovato even kept her hair dyed for the occasion. Click on the photos below for a closer look: “I am totally stoked to be here,” Lovato told attendees at the event. “I’m excited to represent my generation and I’m ready to find the winner.” But is she ready to criticize? Since leaving rehab, Lovato has been adamant in telling fans that it’s okay to be yourself , that confidence is the key to happiness. A great message, no doubt. But does it really jibe with being a reality show judge? Weigh in now: Which new panelist has you most excited?
‘I believe Demi’s bubbly personality and kindness will prove to bring Britney out of her shell,’ says Celebuzz editor Amber James. By Gil Kaufman Britney Spears, LA Reid, Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato Photo: Britney Spears via Facebook It’s always hard being the new girl in school. But when Britney Spears makes her debut in the fall as the fresh judge on the panel of “X Factor” , she’ll have come fine company in the form of Demi Lovato . With show creator Simon Cowell and record label boss L.A. Reid returning as the wily veterans with decades of experience in the game, Demi and Britney will be the relative newbies in the mix. The two women will also have something else in common: Both were child stars who grew up in the public eye and then struggled through a series of headline-grabbing difficulties only to brush themselves off and regain their star status. “I think it’s good for both of them to have each other on the show,” People magazine senior writer Joey Bartolomeo said. “For one thing, because they’re both new to [‘Factor’] and it’s not one person coming in to be with three other judges. They have each other.” Their paths, and struggles, have been very different, but Bartolomeo said the two can likely relate to each other on a personal level, though we shouldn’t expect them to do any therapeutic work on live TV. “Everyone loves a good comeback story,” she said. “Britney has been doing well the past couple of years … but seeing her on a weekly basis with this kind of job is another step in that process … People want to root for people to have success; now they have two people on a show who’ve been through a lot, and people will tune in to see how they are.” Lovato, 19, went from being the young star of such Disney shows as “Sonny With a Chance” and “Camp Rock” to a successful touring and recording career that was derailed in 2010 when she entered a rehab center for physical and emotional issues. She has since become a spokesperson for anti-bullying causes, spoken out about her body-image issues, eating disorder, depression, self-abuse and substance problems. Spears, 30, also came up in the Disney machine as a star on “The New Mickey Mouse Club,” and after a series of erratic incidents and public meltdowns, she ended up in a rehabilitation facility in 2007 and was put on a psychiatric hold in January 2008 after refusing to give up her two children to their father, ex-husband Kevin Federline. While Lovato has spoken publicly about her struggles and appears to have gotten her career back on track, Spears has been kept on lockdown by her team. The singer is under a strict conservatorship that has handed control of her assets to her father and, recently, her boyfriend/agent, Jason Trawick. Britney’s career has rebounded, with hit albums, singles and tours, but she has participated in only sporadic press interviews, which were, by most accounts, tightly controlled and allowed for little deviation from a predetermined script. “I think they could help support each other, but their [personal] problems are very different,” said Us Weekly senior music editor Ian Drew, who questioned the choice of Spears for the “Factor” panel. “Knowing the way Britney works, nobody is going to be able to speak to her. It’s a very odd choice. … I don’t know what Demi will add [either].” Drew said he understood “X Factor” had to add two new judges because of the structure of the show, but he wonders how the pair will fit into the mix. “Demi is very honest and says what’s on her mind, so maybe they need someone like that,” he said. “But I don’t think anyone will tune in to see Demi.” Celebuzz editor Amber James also acknowledged that the women have dealt with their problems in totally different ways, but said their shared struggle might add an interesting dynamic to the show as it tries to build on the first season’s solid-but-not-smashing success. “I believe Demi’s bubbly personality and kindness will prove to bring Britney out of her shell,” predicted James. “They seem like they’d bounce off each other well and provide a nurturing and safe atmosphere, where Britney can really get into her role, without fear of saying the wrong thing and truly be herself.” And even if they don’t become instant besties, the pair will at least be able to fend off the intimidating presences of Cowell and Reid while trying to find their feet on the show. “Maybe the two of them will gang up on Simon and L.A.,” Bartolomeo said. Britney Spears and Demi Lovato will join L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell as judges on The X Factor , Fox confirmed at its upfront presentation this afternoon. Spears, one of the most successful and celebrated artists in pop music history, gives the show A-list star power as it gears up for its sophomore season. Lovato is no slouch herself, having become an accomplished singer and actress with a devoted and engaged young fan base. Not bad for the age of 19. “I’m absolutely delighted that Britney and Demi are joining us,” said Cowell, who removed Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger at the end of last season. “Britney Spears remains one of the biggest stars in the world, she’s talented, fascinating – and I believe she knows exactly how to spot The X Factor.” “Demi’s had an amazing career in music, TV and film for someone her age. She’s young, confident, and enthusiastic,” he added of his other panelist. “It’s important that she speaks to our younger audience. The new panel will be dynamic and will work really well with the changes to the show.” Spears joining The X Factor has basically been a done deal for weeks now, added,
Lovato and Britney Spears expected to be at Monday (May 14) Fox upfront event. By Gil Kaufman Demi Lovato Photo: Tom Pennington/ Getty Images America will meet the rebooted panel of the “X Factor” on Monday and filling the fourth slot at the judge’s table will be Demi Lovato . The 19-year-old Disney star is expected to make the announcement of her high-profile gig on Monday at the Fox network upfront presentation, which will also officially reveal the worst-kept-secret in TV: that Britney Spears has joined the show as well. Lovato is one of the many names that has been in the mix for the gig, which at one point also included Avril Lavigne, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey. TMZ confirmed that Lovato has scored the gig, which will put her on alongside series creator Simon Cowell and music executive L.A. Reid when the show comes back for its second season in the fall. Last week, Spears finalized her deal, which will reportedly pay her $15 million for one season’s work. Spears and Lovato replace Paula Abdul and former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, who were fired in January after the first season of the heavily-hyped show failed to live up to Cowell’s lofty expectations. Both Lovato and Spears are expected to be on hand on Monday when Fox announces the show’s new lineup at its upfront presentations. Though Lovato has a summer tour planned , those dates will reportedly not conflict with her new duties on “X Factor.” A spokesperson for “X Factor” could not be reached for comment at press time. Last week, MTV News asked some media experts whether the move to “X Factor” makes sense for Spears and the general consensus was that it did. “I think it is a good move, actually,” said Entertainment Weekly writer Tanner Stransky. “I think she has so many people on her team watching what she’s doing and being careful. I think nobody would let her take a misstep, but I think it’s the right move right now.” The only concern is how the reclusive star might deal with the increased scrutiny and requirement to think on her feet on live TV. “I think everyone is a little concerned, simply because Britney has been very press-shy since she’s been in her conservatorship, and everything is incredibly guarded and incredibly controlled,” said Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at Billboard . “And there can be uncontrollable moments on ‘The X Factor,’ and if things are not completely in control and things are not rehearsed, things could go wrong. With a live show, anything can happen, and that can be very exciting but, at the same time, a little worrisome.” Lovato and Spears, 30, are the kind of young singers that “X Factor” producers were seemingly looking for to give the show a more youthful appeal and share their experience with contestants. Both are former child stars who’ve struggled with personal issues and neither has experience appearing on live network television. Do you think Demi Lovato will make a good “X Factor” judge?
