Rihanna Looking To Re-Create ‘Lie’ Magic On Next Album

‘Love the Way You Lie’ producer Alex Da Kid is working on Rated R follow-up. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Michael Tran/ FilmMagic Rihanna has found a winning formula in her Eminem collaboration, “Love the Way You Lie.” Naturally, for her next album, she’s reportedly looking to the song’s producer, Alex Da Kid, for new hits. “We worked together about a year before ‘Love the Way You Lie’ in London, and obviously that song has helped the people around her and her label say, ‘Oh, that’s a big hit, we want another one,’ ” Alex explained to Billboard. “You know how the music industry is.” The “Lie” producer — who also produced B.o.B’s “Airplanes” — said that the key to Rihanna’s future success is all about finding the balance between Rated R edginess and the hit-making sound of the Eminem track. “I’d say it’s like a mixture of her two sides,” he said. “It’s commercial, but at the same time, it’s got an edge to it — it has substance.” Alex Da Kid isn’t the only producer coming onboard for the album. Songwriter Sean Garrett has been in the studio with the Barbadian star and recently told MTV News that the new songs will reflect Rihanna’s current, lighter state-of-mind. “I can definitely say that her album is definitely gonna be way more exciting, happy,” Garrett said. “I hope she doesn’t mind me saying this. I love Rihanna. She’s fun, she’s like a sister, and I tend to think she doesn’t really take herself too seriously. And I think that’s what this album is gonna be about.” The album will earn fans in the clubs too, if David Guetta has his way with it. “Well, you know, I’m a DJ, so I make beats that make you want to dance,” Guetta told MTV News. “And I think she was one of the first to do that in that urban world, so you know, I think it would be good for her to do it again.” What kind of music do you want to see Rihanna do next? ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Director Knew Eminem Video Would Be ‘Giant’

‘If I didn’t do this video, I should just quit pop videos,’ Joseph Kahn tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Eminem (file) Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Joseph Kahn is one of the biggest video directors in the world, but he didn’t get to where he is today by burying his head in the sand. So when he was approached about doing Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” clip, he said yes, even though he was due to start shooting a feature film two weeks later. But it wasn’t only the big names that attracted him to the project … it was actually the fact that everything about the project reminded him of another video he’d directed: Britney Spears’ comeback single “Womanizer.” “It is like ‘Womanizer,’ ” Kahn told MTV News. “Part of the success in [the video industry] is to be smart enough to recognize when those opportunities are given, and, you know what? I think if I didn’t do this video, I should just quit pop videos, because it’s obviously a giant thing that was about to happen. You couldn’t get me away from this one.” So Kahn famously hammered out a treatment for the clip in one furious session and turned the video around at a breakneck pace. His hustle has already paid off, because “Love the Way You Lie” has quickly become one of the most talked-about videos in recent memory. And much like “Womanizer” did for Spears, its success has only added another chapter to Eminem’s rather remarkable comeback story, which sort of proves just how smart Kahn is. Though, the way he tells it, this one was pretty much a no-brainer, all the way. “I think that this is Eminem’s finest album … trust me, at the time, I was going to shoot my movie in about two weeks, so taking a week of my time away from my movie to do this is a huge commitment on my part,” Kahn said. “The only reason I did it [was] because the song was so amazing, and the album is so great, and Eminem is in such a great moment, and it was such an important topic to do. He’s dealing with these massive issues in such a brilliant, pop-y, artistic way, that, as a pop-video director, I cannot step away from this.” What’s your favorite Joseph Kahn-directed video? ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Video Is ‘Not About Eminem Or Rihanna,’ Director Says

‘These are fictional characters,’ Joseph Kahn says of abusive couple played by Dominic Monaghan and Megan Fox. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Joseph Kahn Photo: MTV News Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” video has already raised eyebrows and sparked debate with its frank depiction of domestic violence, and given the history both artists have with the subject, many are now wondering if the clip is meant to be biographical. After all, the “Lie” video goes to great lengths to show the depths of violence in a relationship, something Em has rapped about innumerous times in the past, and it’s something Rihanna knows about all too well, after then-boyfriend Chris Brown assaulted her in 2009 . So the question most seem to be asking is: Are the clip’s two characters — played by Dominic Monaghan and Megan Fox — actually meant to represent Em and Rihanna? To find out, MTV News went directly to the man responsible for the video (and its concept), director Joseph Kahn, who told us in no uncertain terms that, while there’s a message behind “Lie,” it has nothing to do with what’s gone on in either artist’s personal life. “There are definitely things in both Rihanna and Eminem’s [lives] that we have to be very sensitive about when we were making this video, [but] it’s not a story about Eminem or Rihanna,” he said. “It’s a specific thing that I created for Dominic and Megan to play two people with very specific story lines to each other. These are fictional characters in my head but obviously based on real human beings.” So while he denies that Monaghan and Fox are playing Eminem and Rihanna in the video, Kahn said he can understand why fans might think that. After all, not only does the clip deal with an emotionally sensitive issue, but he happens to have a rather unique perspective on the lives of his musical stars. “The subject matter is some of the most complex stuff I’ve ever handled … [and] obviously there are parallels, in terms of the song, with Eminem’s personal life and Rihanna’s personal life,” he said. “And I had actually, like last year, been working with Chris Brown … so I’m in the middle of all this stuff, and I have to be very, very careful with how I tread. But ultimately, if you really look at the video, it’s not about anybody in particular. … It’s a story specific to two characters I created.” Did you think the “Love the Way You Lie” clip was about Em and Rihanna? Exclusive: 3OH!3 Announce North American Fall Tour

The Colorado electro-party-rap duo will hit the road beginning on October 14 in San Antonio. By James Dinh 3OH!3 Photo: MTV News Everyone’s favorite area-code-named electro-party-rap duo are hitting the road again. 3OH!3 have announced a six-week trek across the United States and Canada this October and November. The VMA nominees sent MTV News a video to break the news about their next set of “rad shows,” which will kick off on October 14 in San Antonio. They aim to hit the cities that they missed on their Too Fast For Love tour which they co-headlined with Cobra Starship and Travie McCoy. “We’re doing about five or six weeks on the road,” Nathaniel Motte said. Sean Foreman chimed in, saying, “We’ve got some awesome bands; we’re playing with hellogoodbye and Down With Webster and a very special guest, depending what city you are in.” In light of the difficult economy, the duo pledged to keep their ticket prices down. “I know it’s a hard. I know a lot of times concerts are really expensive and ticketing fees are really, really expensive, so it’s shame,” Motte said. “We’re doing everything we can to keep it low. We work with a lot of independent promoters. “We’re going to find cool, creative ways for you guys to avoid ticketing fees, keep ticket prices low and give you guys the best show for your mind,” Motte continued. Foreman even joked that they’d adjust their own diet to cut costs. “We’re eating SpaghettiOs, which is totally fine, because we prefer eating SpaghettiOs.” Much like they did on Too Fast for Love, 3OH!3 plan to make this tour as much of a party as ever. “It’s going to be huge party,” Foreman said. “All the acts are so stoked to come on this tour, and we’re all going to have a good time so come out and have a good time with us.” The upcoming tour will serve as a perfect venue to showcase new material off their recently released third album, Streets of Gold, which they said was “inspired by gold.” “Some of it’s really fun and just about kind of our life on the road and parties. There’s some heavier songs [too],” Foreman told MTV News earlier this summer. 3OH!3’s U.S. tour dates, according to their label:

Eminem Video’s Dominic Monaghan-Megan Fox Kiss Makes Ian Somerhalder Jealous

‘Wait, Dom made out with Megan Fox? Wow!’ ‘Vampire Diaries’ star joked about ‘Love the Way You Lie’ clip. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Ian Somerhalder at the 2010 Teen Choice Awards Photo: MTV News Ian Somerhalder is jealous of his former “Lost” co-star Dominic Monaghan. It seems that the “Vampire Diaries” star wishes he had been cast in Eminem’s new music video for “Love the Way You Lie.” No, Somerhalder isn’t some big fan of the Rihanna collaboration … but he is a big fan of the idea of kissing Megan Fox. “Wait, Dom made out with Megan Fox? Wow!” Somerhalder joked to MTV News on the red carpet at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday night in Los Angeles. “Maybe if I hadn’t been killed off of ‘Lost’ in the first season, I would have gotten to make out with Megan Fox.”

Kanye West "Power" Video: Watch It Now!

Two of the biggest stars in the rap game have released new music videos this week. First, Eminem teamed up with Rihanna to deliver ” Love the Way You Lie ,” which features Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan. Now, Kanye West has delivered his rebuttal, a religious-themed video in honor of his latest single, “Power.” It puts the star (and his giant gold chain) front and center, with director/artist Marco Brambilla explaining the motivation as follows: “I’ve always wanted to do something that would visualize power, to do a portrait of what power would look like in a sort of timeless way and being able to have him framed in that portrait, essentially doing a video portrait of Kanye as a symbol of power, was very consistent with my art practice and what I explore in my artwork.” Watch the video below and chime in with your thoughts on it: Power

Love the Way You Lie: The Official Music Video

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn. But that’s alright because I love the way it hurts… Rihanna and Eminem already own the number-one song in the land. Now this power duo has come out with a hit video for the single “Love the Way You Lie.” And it stars Megan Fox ! What else could you ask for? Watch below and then read Rihanna’s take on the tune: Love the Way You Lie The song deals with domestic violence, something Rihanna says she and Eminem “have both experienced… on different sides.” She’s referring, of course, to Eminem’s problems with his ex-wife and her relationship with that monster Chris Brown . Adds the beautiful star: “It just was authentic. It was real. It was believable for us to do a record like that, but it was also something that needed to be done, and the way he did it was so clever. He pretty much just broke down the cycle of domestic violence, and it’s something that a lot people don’t have a lot of insight on.” What do you think of the video?

Megan Fox Donates ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Fee To Women’s Shelter

After appearing in Eminem and Rihanna video, the actress turned over cameo fee to Sojourn House. By James Dinh Megan Fox Photo: Michael Buckner/Getty Images Megan Fox’s role in Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” video, featuring Rihanna, seems to have been more than just a cameo for the actress, who has donated her appearance fee to the Sojourn House, a shelter for abused women. According to Yahoo! Finance , Fox gave her undisclosed fee to Sojourn, which “provides battered women and their children a safe space to regroup, rebuild, and reestablish their self-esteem and lives.” The song is centered on the subject of domestic abuse. The Hollywood star filmed scenes with “Lost” actor Dominic Monaghan for the rapper’s “Love the Way You Lie” video premiering Thursday (August 5) on MTV at 9 p.m. ET/PT. While the concept of the video is still unknown, the on-camera couple reportedly got steamy during filming. The duo were snapped locking lips on a rooftop. “Joseph and I worked pretty closely together to make sure we got this right,” Eminem explained in a press release. Trying to make this tough subject work visually is a challenge. It was great to have Rihanna, Megan and Dominic onboard for this. They really brought it and made this video super-powerful.” The weighty subject matter was also a topic Rihanna felt needed to be addressed . “It was believable for us to do a record like that, but it was also something that needed to be done and the way he did it was so clever,” the singer said. “He pretty much just broke down the cycle of domestic violence and it’s something that a lot people don’t have a lot of insight on, so this song is a really, really powerful song and it touches a lot of people.” What do you think of Megan’s gesture? Eminem’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Video Premieres Thursday On MTV

Tune in before ‘Jersey Shore’ at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT to see Em and Rihanna’s fiery new clip. By Kara Warner Rihanna on the set of “Love the Way You Lie” Photo: Danny Mayer/ Eric Ford/ On Location Photos Hot on the heels of Eminem’s eight VMA nominations , it was announced Tuesday (August 3) that the highly anticipated video for his latest chart-topper, “Love the Way You Lie,” will premiere Thursday on MTV at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT before “Jersey Shore.” Directed by Joseph Kahn (who has worked with Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani, 50 Cent and many other superstars), the video was recently filmed in L.A. and features Rihanna, who sings the hook, along with actors Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan. Despite the photos that leaked online last week of Fox and Monaghan happily locking lips , they play “a couple going through the extremes of an abusive relationship” — a sensitive subject matter for Em and Rihanna. “Joseph and I worked pretty closely together to make sure we got this right,” Eminem said in a press release. “Trying to make this tough subject work visually is a challenge. It was great to have Rihanna, Megan and Dominic on board for this. … They really brought it and made this video super-powerful.” Rihanna — whose very public assault at the hands of then-boyfriend Chris Brown made the topic especially sensitive for her — recently told “Access Hollywood” this was something she “needed” to do . “It’s something that, you know, [Eminem and I have] both experienced, you know, on different sides, different ends of the table,” she said. “It just was authentic. It was real. It was believable for us to do a record like that, but it was also something that needed to be done, and the way he did it was so clever. He pretty much just broke down the cycle of domestic violence, and it’s something that a lot people don’t have a lot of insight on, so this song is a really, really powerful song, and it touches a lot of people.” Judging by the intense, fiery photos that leaked from the video’s set , the clip looks to make a powerful statement and could be an early contender for next year’s Video Music Awards. At this year’s VMAs — which air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12 — Eminem’s “Not Afraid” will try to fend off the competition for Video of the Year, as well as Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video. Eminem is also nominated alongside Drake in the Best Hip-Hop Video category for his contribution to the MC’s cameo-filled “Forever.” Rihanna’s vid for “Rude Boy” is up for Best Editing. Don’t forget to tune in to MTV on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT for the premiere of Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie,” and check MTVNews.com for full coverage of the clip.
