REVIEW: Take This Waltz Hums to the Conflicts of the Heart

Take This Waltz is an unusually kind film about infidelity — not because it sidesteps or shortchanges heartbreak, but because it doesn’t let any one of its characters bear the full burden of blame. That such a thing needs to or should even be assigned in this scenario is beside the point, as the film defers to the vagueries of the human heart and the way we can, despite our better judgment, form a connection with someone that can’t easily be set aside. It’s tempting to glibly connect this clear-eyed empathy with the fact that  Take This Waltz is Canadian and somehow inherently prone to niceness — it’s set in a rosy version of Toronto in which the characters all live in charmingly shabby chic houses and sporadically work in quirky jobs. But what it actually comes from, I think, is that the film is the sophomore feature of actress-turned-director Sarah Polley, who constructs her central love triangle with a determinedly feminine perspective and places all of the choice on her female protagonist Margot, played with typical grace by Michelle Williams. Margot wants anything but to have to make a difficult call, especially one that will result in someone getting hurt. One of the film’s first scenes finds her visiting the living history museum of the Fortress of Louisbourg for work and getting pulled in front of a crowd by costumed, in-character staffers to help with a flogging. “Put your back into it!” yells a man from the crowd when she ineffectually flails at the prisoner, clearly mortified. Later, she ends up sitting next to the heckler on the plane. His name is Daniel (Luke Kirby), and he’s just watched her board in a wheelchair despite not having needed one before, leading her to confess that she pretends at airports because of her terror of missed connections, something born not out of a need not to miss a flight but because, as she puts it, “I’m afraid of wondering if I’ll miss it. I don’t like being in between things.” Margot will, however, spend the movie in between things — between Daniel, who turns out to live across the street (“Shit!” she mutters when she finds out), and Lou (Seth Rogen), the husband of five years with whom she shares a loving if childlike and seemingly no longer passionate relationship. Margot loves Lou — the two tussle like kids and talk adoring about the terrible violence they’re going to do one another (“I’m going to put your spleen through a meat grinder,” Lou sighs) — but she may not be in love with him any longer, and she has an undeniable heated spark with Daniel, an artist who pulls a rickshaw and who watches her with guarded longing. Take This Waltz , which was also written by Polley,   has moments of overdetermined dialogue — the line about airport connections is one, and another finds Margot describing Lou, who’s a cookbook writer, as “a really good cook, if you like chicken.” It’s stronger in its moments of wordless sensuality, from its opening scene in which Margot makes muffins, the camera drifting to her bare feet and then her face as she leans it against the over glass. Daniel offers to take Margot and Lou downtown in his rickshaw when they’re headed out to celebrate their anniversary, and we track her gaze across the muscles of his arms and back, catching his eye in the side-view mirror. The draw of the flesh is not inconsiderable, and  Take This Waltz doesn’t make it so easy as being a kind of passing temptation, an indulgence to be resisted. Margot and Lou have a stable and relatively happy life together — we see them at home and in the company of their friends and family, including Lou’s sister Geraldine (a memorable Sarah Silverman), a recovering alcoholic. It’s a lot to trade for attraction, no matter how significant, but the film feasibly puts the two on a level, leaving Margot to navigate the decision with growing distress as she tries to avoid Daniel, only to go out of her way to run into him, and then flees back to Lou professing her love and fear. Kirby makes his improbable swain just dangerous enough, the embodiment of the promise of the new, while Rogen shows off his dramatic chops as a man who’s obviously never given thought during his time with Margot of what things would be like without her. But the weight of the film rests on Williams, and she finds a poignant and quiet agony in her character as she realizes she’s the only one who can make this decision and must deal with the consequences either way, after time and again trying to push it off or onto other people. It’s a world of bittersweet sophistication from Polley, and one that accepts that, as a stranger reminds Margot at a swim class, “new things get old,” but that doesn’t make them any less appealing.

Miley Cyrus Flaunts Fiance, Cleavage at Film Breakthrough Awards

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth made their first public appearance together yesterday since news broke of their engagement . But talk at the Australians in Film Awards & Benefit Dinner in Century City, California didn’t center around what was on Miley’s finger as much as what was on her body as a whole: a VERY little black dress! With not very much on top. “It’s called Zimmerman,” the 19-year old told reporters on the scene. “It’s from Australia. I love a little built-in corset, every girl does… I just wanted to wear something simple because tonight is all about him.” Hemsworth was actually recognized at the event, telling journalists that he and Miley are “very very excited” about their engagement. As for what sold Cyrus on her love? She explained: “I like when men work hard, I think it’s important. I always work really hard so it’s good to have someone who is as passionate about what they do and wants to be great at what they do instead of just being okay. We always strive to have our 130%.” [Photos: WENN.com]

‘Awkward’ Cast Previews ‘Shocking’ Season Two Premiere

‘Everything is still very fresh, very prevalent,’ star Beau Mirchoff tells MTV News about premiere, airing tonight (June 28) on MTV. By Jocelyn Vena “Awkward” castmembers Brett Davern, Molly Tarlov and Beau Mirchoff Photo: If you thought things couldn’t get any more — dare we say it — “Awkward” for Jenna on the hit MTV comedy of the same name, you should brace yourself for what’s to come in season two. After Jenna (played by Ashley Rickards) learned who wrote the infamous letter in season one that led many of her school peers to think she tried to commit suicide, she’s now dealing with the aftermath at home. Oh yeah, she’s also in the middle of a bit of a love triangle between new boy, Jake, and old beau, Matty. And given the fast pace of tonight’s (June 28) season premiere, expect her family and relationship drama to move along at a very rapid speed. “Season two takes place two weeks after the finale of season one, so everything is still very fresh, very prevalent,” Beau Mirchoff, who plays Matty, explained to MTV News. “The love triangle hasn’t been resolved, Sadie is as villainous as ever, all of her colors have shown. Jenna Hamilton has a lot of decisions to be made. I think the fans are going to love it.” Molly Tarlov, who plays aforementioned mean girl Sadie, explained that if you thought you were going to get lulled into Jenna’s life drama this season, think again. “We really start season two in the first episode just full force into it. The story moves along so quickly in the first episode,” she said. “There’s a lot of stuff that I will not just say surprising, I will say absolutely shocking, and is gonna, if you watch the first episode, is going to be really shocking to you.” [Warning: Spoiler ahead!] In addition to having to keep her love life in check, Jenna is also reeling from the news that her mother was the one who wrote the letter that forever changed her life. And that news will only make things harder for her at home as her mom tries to make it up to her, albeit not always in the most productive ways. “There’s a lot of, ‘Anywhere Jenna Hamilton goes, awkwardness is gonna follow,’ and that is very true with the letter as well,” teased Brett Davern, who stars as Jake. “I think it’s gonna cause some problems at home for her and within her family. And so, not only is her drama surrounding her school life, with us, the love triangle and all her friends and stuff, but also her at-home drama, I think, increases in season two as well.” Mirchoff added, “It doesn’t become known to Matty and Jake. [They] possibly find out about it later in the season, but not right away.” Don’t miss the season two premiere of “Awkward,” tonight (June 28) at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT (9:30 Central) on MTV! My name is Madison, I’m from New Jersey, and this is My Bieber Experience. I’ve seen Justin live 3 times but that’s it, twice in 2009, and once in 2010 on the My World Tour. I met Justin for the first time on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 around 3 pm at his Believe CD signing in New York. I’ve been a belieber since 2009 so this day meant a lot to me. I got to New York around 6:30am, waited in a line for the wristbands, then got in the actual line to meet him. The last time I had slept was around 1pm the day BEFORE. I was running on 24 hours without sleep, I was exhausted, but it’s okay, for Justin I’ll do anything. Around 2pm everyone was so excited because that’s when the signing started. I was probably around the 70 th person in line, thank goodness, because that line seemed like it wrapped around all of New York City! They let the first 50 people in around 2:15. It wasn’t until around 3pm I got to go in. During the wait, Channel 5 news talked to us and made us sing, it was fun but nerve-wracking. I just wanted to go in. I actually had started crying before I even went inside. I was really nervous, too. At one point, I thought I was going to throw up because my stomach hurt and I felt dizzy. The thought of meeting Justin scared me, I don’t know why. Finally it was my turn to go inside. My heart pounded so much, and I had to count to keep myself from crying. When I walked inside, it was kind of an aisle leading toward Justin. I saw his perf hair first then his flawless face and I started crying, it was unbelievable. My mom and friend’s mom were like, “Stop, you need to calm down and stop crying so you’ll be able to talk to him.” I calmed down because I didn’t want to waste the few seconds I got with him. I took a few pictures. I saw Kenny and screamed his name a few times but he didn’t turn my way. The line moved very quickly. We got closer to the table and the lady said no videos, put everything like cellphones and cameras away.   I put my iPod in the top of my shirt and walk by with it recording. My plan worked out great!  I walked up to the table and I blurted out, “I’ve been waiting 3 years to meet you, I love you.” Justin was like, “3 years?” And I was like, “Yes” and so he was like “It’s a pleasure to meet you finally. ” I was just so anxious that I rudely cut Justin off OMG sorry Justin, but I said “Can I have a hug like?” (Because I’ve dreamed of what hugging him feels like for so long, I need to feel his hug so I asked) and he was like, “Yes” so he went to reach over to hug me and I went to reach over to hug him. The rude lady was like, “NO NO NO NO.” She started like pulling me away because I started to get too close to the Bieber. I was barely close though, so him being the best idol in the world, grabbed onto my hand (you can see in the video) and he held on for a few seconds. What you didn’t see was him looking me in the eye, like basically saying sorry for not being able to hug me . He basically killed me with that look. I seriously felt like sparks fly, I felt so much care and passion when he grabbed my hand. Even my mom who was right behind me said he actually wanted to hug me, but what he did instead was so nice. He even said hi to her, haha, but that’s a different story. The lady kept pulling me away and I shouted, “I LOVE YOU!!!!!” It sounds like I’m dying, but I was being pulled away from Justin, like that’s almost as bad, seriously. When I walked away, some guy randomly took a picture of me. I kept walking. Then I make this really weird noise, like a cry that won’t come out. Then my friend comes over and hugs me and I bawl my eyes out. Right after I walked away from the table, I had realized I forgot to give him the letter I wrote him, but whatever. Then the video ends. I continued crying for at least a good 30 minutes walking around New York. When I walked out of J&R Music World, Channel 5 News NY interviewed me! I was actually on the news, crying my eyes out. That’s my Bieber experience. So many haters in my school for the past 3 years have said that I would never meet him, and I turned right around and I told them “Watch me.” Guess who’s laughing, hehe. A lot of people are really happy for me because they know how much I love him. It’s nice to know people are actually happy for me meeting him even though they don’t like him. I hope every belieber gets to meet Justin. You all deserve it, so much. I never thought this day would come. Every time I’ve tried to meet Justin before, it never worked out, something always went wrong so I figured it just wasn’t meant to be. But please never stop trying, you will meet him someday. I love this blog!  -Madison Original post: My name is Madison, I’m from New Jersey, and this is My…

My name is Sam and on June 19th 2012 at 4:11pm , my dream came true. It all started last Friday when Justin tweeted that J&R music was selling wristbands for a Believe signing that was being held on Tuesday. Since my dad works in NYC, I immediately called him and told him he had to go down to J&R and see if there were any wristbands left. In an hour my dad called me up telling me he’d gotten me 4 wristbands. I started crying, tears were pouring all down my face . The day of the signing came. We left my house around 8:30am and got there around 10:30am. J&R already had about 300 girls there, so we quickly got behind the barricades and waited. The signing didn’t start until 3:00pm, when it was supposed to start around 2 but we didn’t mind as long as I still got to see his face. This all was so unreal to me I mentally didn’t believe I was about to meet the real Justin Bieber. We got to the front in about an hour and every single girl who walked out of J&R was crying. Before I could speak, they sent us through the door and there he was. That’s when it hit me. There’s was about 25 people in front of me in line, but I could see him in the distance. I was shaking so badly and tearing up when security led me to the table. Ryan was on the left and Justin was on the right. I said hi to Ryan and he waved to me, and then I was face to face with Justin. I said, “JUSTIN YOU’RE MY ROLE MODEL, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH” He looked up from signing my CD, made direct eye contact with me and said with a smile, “Thanks, love you too,” handed my CD and then I walked away. Once I got out of J&R I convulsed onto the floor and basically went into cardiac arrest. The world was so irrelevant to me and all that I could do was reply his voice in my head and clench my CD. He honestly looks like he was sculpted by angels , I haven’t found one flaw on him. I want everyone to know that you will meet Justin, I promise you. It was completely out of the blue for me, and I have confidence that you all will have your moment. Believe in yourself and Never Say Never.  Original post: My name is Sam and on June 19th 2012 at 4:11pm, my dream came…

Hello my name is Carla and I’m from NYC. My biggest dream came true! June 19, 2012. This is how my story went. On June 18, 2012 I was on Twitter, checking Justin’s page of course. I saw he tweeted that he was going to be in J&R at the city for a signing. I’ ve been so exited for the album #BELIEVE that I even forgot what day it was. We got to J&R at 9, I went down really fast to see if they were still selling them, they were! I was soooo happy! I got the deluxe album and started doing the line, which wasn’t packed at 9am since the album signing started at 2pm. I was so happy the whole morning. I got to meet some cool beliebers too. I was singing his songs and calling his name with all the other fans . The news came and interviewed us. At 2pm there was still no Justin, but I didn’t care because I would of waited all day. At 3 the line started moving, even though they said we couldn’t take pictures and to put our phones away, I didn’t. When I saw him, my heart dropped, I was freaking out. I started screaming saying, “I love you Justin!!” Then it was my turn to have my album signed. I was freaking out even more, I took a quick picture without anyone seeing. I got to tell him, “I love you Justin” & he looked at me and said, “I love you too” OMG I wanted to faint, cry, I was so happy! BEST day of my life, beliebers, NEVER stop trying. I’ve been trying to meet him for years and I had the chance. One day you’ll have your chance too.  Original post: Hello my name is Carla and I’m from NYC. My biggest dream…

Hi, I’m Julia. I was lucky enough to meet Justin this past…

Hi, I’m Julia. I was lucky enough to meet Justin this past Decemeber while he was in Toronto for his Christmas show. Here’s my second encounter with Justin, and best one yet. My friends and I decided to get a hotel for MMVA weekend and were hoping to meet Justin when he arrived. Unfortunately, Friday night I was working when he flew in. Some people I knew from high school had the chance to meet him around the city , like at Pizza Pizza. They were so lucky! On Saturday, my friends and I had already planned to go out to a club DJ Tay James was hosting. We got on the guestlist once it was announced, not thinking of anything other than having a good time. Saturday was a night to remember. Not only did Tay DJ, but the crew, Jeremy, as well as Justin AND Selena came. I freaked out when I saw them. When “All Around The World” came on, EVERYONE went crazy. Selena got up off the couch and started to sing and dance with Justin. They were there for at least half an hour and then left. We didn’t think this night could get any better. Since it also happened to be Alfredo’s birthday, it was an awesome time and we all hung out for a while. Finally, the day of MMVA’s came. Earlier in the day we waited outside his hotel but didn’t even get one glimpse of him. There was way too many fans, paparazzi and he must have been in his hotel room doing radio, press, and rehearsals. This was really sad for all of us. We just wanted to at least see him somewhere. After waiting so long, we decided to go to the red carpet car line up to see Justin . We thought he would roll down the window to say hi since it was only 6 of us, but I don’t think he wanted to ruin the surprise for the red carpet of having Jazzy and Jaxon with him and Selena. All of us were quite disappointed because almost all of the weekend we just wanted to just see him. Finally, Monday morning came and we knew Justin would be going to NYC for his show. We had less than 5 hours asleep and got ready for 9 a.m. to go wait outside of his hotel. At around 10 a.m. there was a lot of commotion. We saw Moshe come back from Starbucks with Bruce and an extra drink. I wonder who it was for? He brought it into the hotel and then came back outside to see two fans who wanted pictures with him. About 10 fans were there and we kept seeing Moshe, Bruce (Justin’s grandfather) and Kenny. We saw luggage being put into a black suburban so we figured it would be Justin’s car. About 10 more fans came around 11 a.m. My friends and I were getting nervous because 20 people is quite a crowd. Luckily, minutes after 11am, Justin and Selena’s car pulled up. Selena went into the car right away and we thought Justin was too… We look again, and Justin handed his bag over to Moshe to put in the car and said, “I’m coming to take pictures!” He greeted ALL of us. He took time with each and every fan making sure they got a good picture and was so sweet. My friend Nicole and I told him that we were having a buyout that upcoming Saturday (@Toronto_Buyout), along with our friend Vanessa (@vanessaalove who was sadly at work). He perked up when he heard that and said, “A  buyout?! BUYOUTS are awesome!” I got my picture with Justin and he wasn’t rushing me or anyone. He just took his time and was SO polite. None of us were freaking out. We were all calm and took our turns, which probably made this a whole lot easier! I took pictures for about 8 other fans after me on their cameras and on mine to send to them. Justin and I kept making eye contact and now everything feels like such a blur. I keep asking myself, “Did that morning really happen?!” After I got my picture with Justin, I took one with Kenny! They were about to go to the airport to fly out to NYC. I’m honestly so thankful this happened. It was just perfect. Justin, if you see this, THANK YOU so much for taking the time to take pictures and talk to us. It made my day and this whole weekend was SO worth it. I LOVE YOU.  -@juliaaa_xo Original post: Hi, I’m Julia. I was lucky enough to meet Justin this past…

The Real Housewives of Orange County Recap: Things Fall Apart

Friendship bracelets, Pussycat dolls, Costa Rica, engagement rings, and cake-eating party crashers . This season of The Real Housewives of Orange County has had it all. Tonight, on the season finale, notes are compared and confrontations are had. Find out how it all goes down with our THG +/- review! Sarah’s still being a ball of drunken crazy about being picked on for breaking the cake. Over her. Minus 3. In two signs of the Apocalypse, Terry calls Brooks “a really nice guy” ( Minus 4 ) and Tamra decides to eat carbs ( Plus 4 ). To commemorate their five months of being friends, and as a tit-for-tat from the first episode , Gretchen gives Tamra a friendship bracelet. Each charm represents something special, but one heart represents how Tamra’s unbreakable. Tamra tells Gretchen she loves her and thanks her for being such a good friend. And then she cries again. While Tamra needs to lay off the booze tonight, it’s a nice moment for these ladies. Plus 10 . Sarah’s still whining about the cake and has the audacity to call Heather the rude one. Heather calls for the “heavy artillery”–a bunch of ladies in cocktail dresses and Terry–and says it’s time for Sarah to go. Plus 3. Alexis tries to get louder than everyone else to bring about a resolution and Slade speaks up as the voice of reason. There’s no need for a resolution. There’s a need for Sarah to leave because that’s what’s been asked of her. As they get Sarah to the door, the greatest line in all of reality television ever, or maybe just this season, falls out of Sarah’s mouth–“Is this the world we live in? Over a bleeping piece of tiny cake?” Yes, Sarah. Yes it is. Buh-bye. Plus 10. The party’s still rocking at Chateau Dubrow, and Vicki decides it’s time to “apologize” to Ryan for bringing him up in her fight with Briana. But in Vickiwood, apologize means “talk about yourself and make things all about how everyone else is wrong.” Minus 17. She thinks Ryan will help her get Briana back, but Ryan says this is really Vicki’s problem. Then she says “I love you. I don’t know you and you took my daughter away, but I love you.” Uh, thanks? Ryan loves you too? Minus 8. Alexis is rambling on to Brooks about how Jim isn’t there because he didn’t want to be there. And who sneaks in the door but Jim! Heather’s Drama-Senses are tingling and Alexis is chipper over Jim’s arrival. WAY chipper. Way more than just one cocktail chipper. Minus 11. Terry comments to a guest that Jim “grew a pair and showed up” right before he does the man-hug-handshake thing that men do. In Camp Gunvalson, Jeana’s daughter Kara sees Slade hug Tamra and is confused. Gretchen applies Tamra’s lipgloss (by kissing her) and Vicki goes traipsing across the yard. She thinks Tamra and Gretchen’s friendship is fake and calls Tamra a brown-noser. Let it go, Vicki. Gretchen’s just more fun than you. Minus 7. Slade offers up hsi services as bouncer again should Terry need them. He’s prepared to send Jim packing if he needs to. Terry asks if they’re okay and Jim says they’ll talk next week. Alexis says they should just talk now and in a complete douchebag move, Jim asks “really? Are you wearing the pants?” Minus 50. I just can’t stand this man. Jim and Terry go talk and Terry’s straight up with Jim. He thinks Alexis is phony and inauthentic. Plus 5 . Heather walks up and Jim nods in her direction and says this is the reason he wanted to talk next week. Jim’s got a problem with the women-folk. But, the talk continues. Until Tamra walks up. Then Jim’s out. Minus 10 , Tamra. This wasn’t your conversation to have. Alexis says Heather shouldn’t have even been in the conversation and it should’ve just been Jim and Terry, man-to-man. Actually, sweetheart, it should’ve been YOU and Terry because Terry talked about you. But whatever. Alexis goes out to talk to Jim and Jim’s pulling out of the driveway without her. She practically has to chase him down the driveway to get him to stop the car. Minus 12 . The gang’s all at the table now. And the booze is flowing. Vicki toasts to the absent Alexis and Tamra rolls her eyes. Brooks challenges her, saying she gave Vicki the “Evil Eye,” and picks a fight with Tamra on Vicki’s behalf. Gretchen says a fight’s been brewing between the two of them for months. Tamra and Brooks start to argue and then Vicki tells Eddie to get control of Tamra, which causes Tamra to tell Vicki to stop letting Brooks tell her what to think, which makes Vicki stand up and get in Tamra’s face. Can we cut the cake already? Maybe these ladies need some sugar. Vicki and Brooks prepare to leave and Tamra follows them to find out why they’re leaving. Vicki shouts that Tamra’s supposed to be her friend and how dare Tamra talk about Brooks and disrespect him and blah blah blah. Get a grip, Vicki. Tamra goes to find Briana after Vicki and Brooks leave and they compare notes. Neither of them like Brooks. Tamra’s crying. Briana’s ready to stick Brooks on a plane to Siberia. Ryan goes back into the house to get Briana away from Tamra so that Tamra can’t corrupt Briana while she and Vicki are “in a healing phase.” Minus 4. Heather goes out to get Vicki and Brooks and bring them back in for her special toast. Briana asks Vicki for Vicki’s side of the story. Suddenly, it seems Vicki saw Tamra roll her eyes and she chooses Brooks over her daughter. They all head back into the party for the final toast. Minus 12. Finally, we’re cutting this damn cake. Heather explains why they’re all there–shockingly, it wasn’t for the drama–she’s changed her name legally and wants to thank her friends, new and old, for coming out to support her. Heather’s classy. I like her. Plus 30. In the worst Vicki moment so far, she muscles her way into the circle to say, basically, “Congrats Heather. When I’m attacked, I fight back and I’m leaving and I’m choosing my man.” I’m surprised she didn’t drop a “my love tank is full” for good measure. Minus 20. Heather’s big surprise of the night–diamonds in the champagne glasses–goes over well. Tamra gets the lucky flute. Now she’s got a new rock to match the one Eddie gave her in Bora Bora. Closing notes: Tamra asks Heather to do shots. Not a good idea, Tamra. Heather says they don’t do shots. Tamra calls her Fancypants. In love, of course. Heather’s still opening up a restaurant. Eddie asks Ryan, Tamra’s son, to be his best man when Eddie and Tamra tie the knot. Tamra needs another drink. Briana says that she and Vicki’s relationship will really continue to suffer as long as Vicki keeps choosing Brooks. Briana and Ryan had a wedding for their friends and family. Briana’s also 6 months pregnant. Tamra and Gretchen are closer than Gretchen and Alexis.
