That’s a rhetorical question — of course you did! We’ve all been following the hugely anticipated film since the beginning, and now we can bask in the glow of its predicted success and the general delight of fans everywhere , not to mention the very positive reviews . Now, MTV News turns to our most trusted “Hunger Games” experts to find out what they think about the adaptation: Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss “If anyone had any lingering doubts about whether our Oscar-nominated leading lady could do the role of Katniss Everdeen justice, those doubts took an arrow to the heart. There were a lot of standout moments in her performance — her soon to be iconic ‘I volunteer!,’ her emotional breakdown after the loss of Rue — but for me, the highest mark of Jen’s understanding of Katniss came at the end when ( spoiler ) she and fellow tribute Peeta are about to commit a double suicide on live TV. In that scene, everything we know about Katniss — her strength, her desire to protect the people she loves, her bravery and the first flicker of rebellion — show through. Unlike the lovelorn Peeta, who uses his final moments of life to appreciate the girl he loves, Katniss has eyes only for the Capitol, looking not at Peeta, but into one of the invisible cameras. Early reports predict midnight box-office totals of more than $18 million. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Stacey Sommer Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate With midnight showings of “The Hunger Games” sold-out for weeks in advance, expectations for the highly anticipated film were even higher for those brave enough to journey to theaters in the middle of the night. Thankfully, Katniss Everdeen and the rest of the tributes did not disappoint. Early reports for the midnight box-office totals predict returns north of $18 million, according to Variety . Those figures put “The Hunger Games” in contention with “The Dark Knight” and “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” which earned $18.5 million and $22.2 million at midnight, respectively. Early predictions for the weekend total estimate “The Hunger Games” earning $125 million . MTV News caught some rabid fans on their way out of the first showings of “The Hunger Games” in New York City, and most of them couldn’t have been more pleased. Joanna Cruz said she was left “speechless” and was “on the edge of my seat the whole time.” Some took their praise ever further. Judith Cruz called it the “the best movie ever.” “I can’t wait to see it again,” she said. “It was awesome. I cried at certain parts.” Though most of the people we interviewed expressed their love of the movie as a whole, a few couldn’t help but point out that they missed some scenes that ended up on the cutting-room floor. “I loved it. I thought it was awesome,” Elena Lerner said. “It wasn’t completely true to the book — they left out a few scenes — but overall, we were both freaking out in our seats. It was so good.” Josh Solomon felt similarly. “I thought the film was very good, well done,” he said. “It missed a couple scenes from the book. It missed spots, but I thought it was done pretty well.” But for one fan in particular, the movie could never live up to the book. “I don’t know how I feel about it. When I read a book, I get very in-depth, and I felt like they missed a lot of what was in the book,” Samantha Cohen said. On the other hand, Esther Portyansky said that the movie was a reminder of why she liked the book so much in the first place. “It was incredible. I was absolutely blown away by it,” she said. “I read the books last summer, and I think I’d almost forgotten how amazing they were, frankly. With Lionsgate’s big screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ teen-centric sci-fi survival-adventure The Hunger Games hitting screens this week, it’s kind of impossible not to draw comparisons to that other YA juggernaut series, which concludes its billion-dollar run on pop culture this fall. So how does The Hunger Games measure up to Twilight ? Some spoilers follow. THE BOOKS Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight , first published in 2005, spawned a total of four books (and one spin-off novella) that were adapted into five movies ( Breaking Dawn Part 2 hits screens this November), with over 116 million copies in print. Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games , first published in 2008, spawned a total of three books set to be adapted into four movies, with over 26 million copies in print. Advantage: Twilight THE HEROINE Twilight : Bella Swan is a 17-year-old girl who moves to gloomy Forks, Washington and falls in love with a vampire. Unassuming and average, she finds her inner strength after four novels’ worth of being imperiled by embracing her destiny and starting a family. Hunger Games : Katniss Everdeen is a 16-year-old girl who lives in gloomy District 12 in the fascist future world of Panem and must fight for her life in a televised battle royale. A skilled huntress, she finds her inner heroine after three novels’ worth of being a pawn in the Capitol’s games by embracing her destiny and becoming a symbol of the resistance. Advantage: Hunger Games SUPER POWERS (AND SUPER WEAKNESSES) Twilight : Left at the mercies of other people’s protection, Bella’s the lame duck for most of the saga, until she discovers that her secret power is, literally, the ability to protect her loved ones. Seriously. Meanwhile, her love for Edward keeps threatening to ruin everything – prom, her sex life, the future of all vampirekind. Hunger Games : Empowered at an early age thanks to her father’s untimely death, Katniss is the provider in her family for most of her life, until she enters the Games and discovers that compassion for others, and the newfound ability to trust in Peeta, is the key to survival. Her only weakness, it could be said, is that her personal drive to survive is so strong she has trouble seeing the big picture, and her place in it. Advantage: Hunger Games THE LOVE TRIANGLE Twilight : Bella must choose between two suitors – Edward Cullen, the sparkly vampire, and Jacob Black, her werewolf BFF. Heated tent scenes, make-out sessions, and torrid glances ensue. Hunger Games : Katniss must choose between two suitors – Peeta, the golden baker’s son (and her fellow Tribute in the Hunger Games), and Gale, her earthy BFF. Play-acted cave scenes, tender kisses, and internal struggles ensue – that is, when Katniss isn’t busy, you know, fighting for her life. Advantage: Twilight THE THEMES Twilight : Love, lust, abstinence, teen pregnancy, motherhood, sexuality vs. sin. Hunger Games : Fighting injustice, taking a stand, trusting others, personal responsibility. Advantage: Hunger Games. THE ONSCREEN PG-13 ACTION Twilight : Speed-ramped vampire running, bad wirework, CG werewolf-vampire melees, non-gory limb-shattering/ripping/beheadings, and one vivid, suggestive C-section by vampire scene. Hunger Games : Training exercises, arrow-shooting, hand-to-hand combat, bladed weapons, Tracker Jacker (i.e. hallucination-inducing poison bee) attacks, and one vivid, suggestive shaky-cam Cornucopia melee. Advantage: Hunger Games FILM PEDIGREE Twilight : Installments directed by Catherine Hardwicke ( Twilight ), Chris Weitz ( New Moon ), David Slade ( Eclipse ), and Oscar-winner Bill Condon ( Breaking Dawn Parts 1 & 2 ). Top Rotten Tomatoes score: Eclipse , at 49%. Hunger Games : The Hunger Games directed by Oscar-nominee Gary Ross, who is set to direct the next sequel, Catching Fire . Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 100% (with 17 reviews in). Advantage: Hunger Games — Seems like The Hunger Games has the edge over Twilight by most of the above criteria, stemming from its more complex and stirring lead character, story, and themes. That said, Twilight fandom outpaces Hunger Games fandom by the millions, circulation-wise. Will solid critical reviews and stellar pre-release ticket sales help bump The Hunger Games to Twilight -level box office returns — and convince non-fans to give it a shot? My name is Emily and I’m here to finally share my AMAZING Bieber experience with everyone! But before I start, I just want to say if you are reading these stories and haven’t met Justin yet, wipe those tears away from your eyes because it will happen! I used to be one of those people that came on here and got all depressed because I thought I would never get to meet Justin but LOOK AT ME NOW B*TCH! Every Belieber deserves to meet him and all Beliebers WILL meet him! It all started on the morning of February 13 th 2012 when I was on my way to school. My belieber buddy Reiko and I were walking when I got a call from my other Belieber buddy Angeliesse saying that Justin was in NYC with Selena Gomez and that she knew where his hotel was! After almost going into cardiac arrest (not really) I told Reiko the amazing news and we headed back onto the train in hopes of meeting our inspiration JUSTIN BIEBER! Keep in mind that this has been our dream for well…what feels like forever! We get off the train, met up with Angeliesse, had a spaz party and then went to his hotel! When we got there, there were a few other Beliebers waiting and ya know how we do, we are a family we connected like that! Within the first 15 minutes of being there, a beautiful black escalade pulled up and we all knew whose car that was! A few minutes after the car came, out of the hotel comes Justin freaking Bieber with Moshe (white Kenny)! I don’t know how we did this but all of us stayed calm and walked over to him and asked for pictures. Just a random little fact to put out there, Moshe was holding a laptop that I assume was Justin’s because it said SWAG in big letters on the front. Anyway, like the gentleman he is, Justin stopped to take pictures with us and was almost done until a ummm how do I put this politely….. a VERY VERY VERY annoying paparazzi came in Justin’s face with a camera and obnoxiously started taking pictures. Understandably, Justin jumped in his car. Although Angeliesse got her picture with him, Reiko and I were devastated that we didn’t get a picture. After Justin went in the car, the same paparazzi that ruined everything kept tapping on his window and taking pictures. Finally Justin opened the door of the escalade and said “STOP IT!” the man kept on taking pictures and knocking on the windows and Justin again opened the door and said, “I said to stop it, GO AWAY!” The crazy man still didn’t stop, so me being the belieber that I am, I went over to the paparazzi and pushed him away from the car and said “Justin said to stop alright?” I don’t know if Justin saw this even though his car was right there, but even if he didn’t I am proud that I did that because NOBODY MESSES WITH JUSTIN! I’m not a violent person at all but what had to be done had to be done! So once the car left, Reiko and I were so upset we missed our chance. One of the other Beliebers there came up to us and said, “You guys will get your pictures! I promise!” That was so sweet of her but we were still pretty doubtful about it. As hours went by Reiko and I were still waiting outside the hotel praying that we would be able to catch him when he came back. A lot later in the day, at around 3pm. We see Kenny Hamilton a few times, take a picture with him as well as Moshe! As time started to pass, more and more fans started showing up and we were really upset because we thought we had no chance. BUT…. Are you ready???? Ok, at around 3:30pm, out comes Justin from the hotel looking AMAZING! He was off going to meet that adorable little Ms. Bieber girl but before he did he spent a little time with his fans! He was in the best mood ever! Talking to his fans, and being so adorable! Finally it was my turn to take a picture with him and I was speechless! It was a little hectic and I didn’t get to say anything but getting a picture was more than enough! After the picture was taken he patted me on the back and I could’ve just melted! When he was done and got into his car, I went over to the window just to see him one last time. I blew a kiss at him and HE BLEW ONE BACK RIGHT AT ME!!!! I always knew Justin was an amazing person from the way he carries himself everyday as he is being watched over and criticized by the world, but seeing him in person that day, and the way he interacted with his fans, and how he truly loves them shows what a great role model and inspiration he really is. ‘Once you get to this level of expansion, you have to pop,’ Norman Reedus tells MTV News about Jon Bernthal’s villain, Shane Walsh. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kara Warner ‘Walking Dead’ Stars Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus Photo: MTV News The death of Shane Walsh on “The Walking Dead” wasn’t exactly shocking to comic-book readers, though the manner of the divisive character’s exit was certainly a surprise: In the source material, Shane is shot and killed by Carl, whereas on the TV show, the disgruntled ex-cop was stabbed in the heart by his old friend Rick — a change the “Walking Dead” cast has described as nothing short of Shakespearean. “There was so much of the love triangle [between Shane, Rick and Lori] that happened, and that had to go somewhere,” actor Norman Reedus told MTV News. “It’s almost sort of Shakespearean in a way. “[Actor Jon Bernthal] did such a good job with that character and taking it some place,” Reedus continued. “And I think once you get to this level of expansion, you have to pop. … That’s what it felt like to me.” Reedus’ co-stars Steven Yeun and Melissa McBride agreed with his assessment. For them, it was the actual night of shooting Shane’s death that sticks with them the most. “Seeing the work that Jon and [Andrew Lincoln] and everybody put towards that story line, it’s awesome,” Yeun shared. “I remember we gathered to watch that final scene, and it was like, they did it like 50 times, and each time you were just like, ‘Holy F…’ You know? It’s so good.” McBride agreed: “It was so unsettling to see them when we were watching the scene being filmed. It was unsettling to see the two of them in that arrangement there. After all they’d been through, and as close as they’d been, it was very strange.” Strange, but monumental. To date, “Walking Dead” has been largely about Rick and Shane’s story. To lose one of those characters as early as season two definitely marks a major shift for the series. “They started the show together, like best buddies right off the bat,” Reedus said. “And to see that pop at the end was, yeah, it was a big deal.” Were you surprised by Shane’s death? Tim Burton opts for gonzo comedy that should please many but may rile fans of the original soap opera. By John Mitchell Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros The wait is over! With less than two months to go before the May 11 release of “Dark Shadows,” we finally have a trailer, and it’s a doozy. We’re going to come right out and say it: We love the trailer. It’s Tim Burton doing what Tim Burton does best. The look is dark and Gothic, but the feel is certifiably gonzo with a heaping side of camp and comedy. Based on its soapy source material, Burton could have taken “Shadows” one of two ways: He could have stripped it of the over-the-top camp and played it as a straight romantic drama where the protagonist was a conflicted vampire, which is what the creators of the early-’90s TV remake did, or he could turn the volume all the way up and have a little fun, flipping the super serious vibe of the original soap opera upside down and making a blood-splattered comedy. He clearly chose the latter, and that’s just fine with us. “Shadows” stars Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, a rich and powerful playboy who is turned into a vampire and buried alive by the jealous witch Angelique ( Eva Green ). Two centuries later, in 1972, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb by thief Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley) and finds the world quite changed and his once great estate, Collinwood Manor, in disrepair. His descendants, including reclusive family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard ( Michelle Pfeiffer ), her drunken, snobby brother Roger Collins (Johnny Lee Miller) and bratty teenage daughter Carolyn ( Chloe Moretz ), haven’t fared much better. In the present, not only does he have to again face Angelique, but he has to contend with nosy psychologist Dr. Julia Hoffman ( Helena Bonham Carter , who has more than a few secrets of her own. Here are our five key scenes from the “Dark Shadows” trailer: First Glimpse of Barnabus as a Vampire After a fleeting look at a pre-vamp Depp in his 18th-century prime (and seriously, can we talk about how this guy never ages?), we see Angelique working her evil magic and casting her spell. Cut to Depp’s Barnabas taking in his monstrous new self from the crashing waves at the bottom of Widows’ Hill, the cliff where his love, Josette duPres (Bella Heathcote), took her own life. “What have you done?” he yells up at her. The aesthetic created for Widows’ Hill is pure vintage Burton. The dark, rocky facade builds up to a point that looks like something from “The Nightmare Before Christmas” brought to life. Which means it’s pretty awesome. Meet the Collins Family Sitting around the dinner table to welcome their long lost relative, we get introduced to all the key players in the film. “Who the hell is this?” Bonham Carter’s straightforward Hoffman asks.”I’m a vampire, Madame,” Barnabas responds. The whole gang — Miller, Moretz, Pfeiffer, Bonham Carter and Gulliver McGrath (David Collins) — is there, and boy are they curious about this pale-faced creeper in some very vintage wares, but Barnabas is ready to hit the road to take care of business. “How soon can the horses be ready?” he asks. “We don’t have horses; we have a Chevy,” Pfeiffer admits. “What Sorcery is This?” Barnabas just can’t seem to grasp the technological innovations that happened while he was chained up in that casket for a few hundred years. Of particular concern is the television, which he seems certain is nothing more than witchcraft. “Reveal yourself, tiny songstress,” he demands before tearing into the back of the set. It’s a pretty random scene, but it perfectly sums up the tone of the humor the film seems after. Things are so weird nowadays, you guys, and the old dead guy just can’t wrap his head around it. Depp’s delivery is spot-on though, and we can see why test audience reaction to this scene was so warmly received. Angelique Rides Back Into Town Burton has taken many liberties with his film, but the most interesting of them might be his characterization of Angelique as a sassy fox with a mean-girl streak and plenty of attitude. When she returns from the late-1700s, she isn’t wearing her old corsets and talking about the old days; she pulls up to Collinwood in a cherry red convertible wearing modern clothes. “You cursed me to be this hideous creator,” Barnabas cries. “You may strategically place your wonderful lips upon my posterior and kiss it repeatedly.” Barnabas and Angelique’s Freaky, House-Trashing Makeout Even though she, you know, cursed him to eternal damnation because he just wasn’t that into her, we can certainly see why Barnabas can’t keep his claws off Green’s sexy witch. At the end of the clip, Depp and Green engage in some very rough foreplay. The magical pair throw each other from wall to wall before ending on the floor, where Angelique gives Barnabas one last lick with her very long tongue. “That was a regrettable turn of events,” Barnabus says, taking in the destruction left in the wake.
