‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Star Shows Nerd Cred At Comic-Con

Andrew Garfield describes ‘surreal’ moment: ‘I felt like I was Spider-Man,’ he tells MTV News. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Andrew Garfield in “The Amazing Spiderman” Photo: Sony Pictures SAN DIEGO — “The Amazing Spider-Man” swung into San Diego Comic-Con on Friday (July 22), and star Andrew Garfield made sure he came ready to talk about the comic book influences he drew from for his performance. Part of what makes Garfield so endearing in the role is his passion for the character of Spider-Man and his love of the comic books. When he chatted with MTV News, he showed off his nerd cred by dropping comic book names when describing the suit and physicality he used for Peter Parker. “The body time in the Ultimates is what I loved,” he explained. “Because I’m skinny, if you hadn’t noticed; I’m a skinny guy. I love the idea of a skinny guy beating the crap out of big guys just as a personal fantasy fulfillment.” But there was more to his performance than that. Garfield made sure he was very specific with his body movements and his physical appearance because he wanted to make a point of bringing more to the evolution of Peter Parker to Spider-Man than the previous films did. “One of the elements that I was interested in was doing something with his physicality,” Garfield said. “I wanted it to be like the venom, the spider bite, was doing something specific to his DNA … In life, imagine like he has more arms than he does, more legs than he does, and more of a special awareness.” Fans have finally had a chance to take a look at “The Amazing Spider-Man” thanks to a trailer that debuted earlier this week. But, as a huge fan himself, Garfield had a bit of a difficult time rationalizing to himself that he was actually Spider-Man. Garfield said there was only one moment in which he felt like he was Spider-Man instead of going through some strange out-of-body experience that wasn’t really happening. “I was in a changing room on my own, and I could be honest with myself. I was really moved by it because no one else was around,” Garfield said. “It was genuinely very, very emotional, and it felt surreal. It was the only moment where I felt like I was Spider-Man.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Amazing Spider-Man.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Lady Gaga Dishes On Sex, Drugs, Born This Way On Howard Stern

Gaga sang ‘Edge of Glory’ and talked about her difficult early years. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga visits SiriusXM July 18, 2011 Photo: Maro Hagopian/SiriusXM For months, Sirius radio host Howard Stern has been bellyaching about how Lady Gaga seemed to be talking to everyone except him. So, when the singer stopped in to chat on Monday morning (July 18), the notorious radio host made sure to make the most of it, indulging in one of his show’s longest celebrity chats in recent memory, a nearly 90-minute ramble in which he got Gaga to talk about fame, fashion, sex, drugs and rock and roll. For the most part, the interview hit many of the highlights of Gaga’s now-legendary rise to superstardom: her childhood fascination with piano, the first song she ever wrote, her move to Manhattan as a teenager and the one-year ultimatum her dad gave her after she dropped out of college. But she also revealed a bit more about her offstage self and the inspirations behind some of her most beloved tunes. “I really don’t give a f— about money at all,” Gaga said when Stern tried to get the singer to dish on how much money her album sales and tours have grossed . In fact, she said she still lives in a tiny Brooklyn apartment and has only bought two things with her newfound riches: heart surgery and a car for her dad. “The Monster Ball was really expensive and the next show will be really expensive and I will pay for it,” she said of the 2012 extravaganza that she’s planning. There was, however, one topic even the famously prying Stern couldn’t goad Gaga could into talking about: her love life. “What boyfriend? … Who’s Jean Luc?” she joked when Stern asked about what her closest friends call her offstage. (Even her parents call her Gaga at this point, she said, especially when they’re mad at her.) “It’s hard to find a boyfriend who doesn’t mind a good tuck,” she added, throwing more fuel on the fire of the absurdly tenacious Internet rumors about her gender. “My first love is music,” she explained, though when Stern asked whether she had been intimate with anyone recently, she laughed, “I got laid last night … the guys who are here are my best friends in the whole world. You’re talking about Luc Carl ; he’s been my best friend since I was 19.” Gaga stressed that Carl is still her best friend, sidestepping the boyfriend issue once again — and that he’s going to launch a Sirius satellite radio show soon. One of the stories Stern was predictably fascinated with was the fact that Gaga’s first piano teacher was a stripper who danced at one of the radio host’s favorite New York gentleman’s clubs, Scores, leading him to wonder if he’d ever gotten a lap dance from Gaga’s instructor. Back in the day, in fact, before she was famous, Gaga said she used to dance on fire escapes and pretend she was a star, an image she re-created for her “The Edge of Glory” video . But those pre-fame days were also difficult, as she toiled at waitressing jobs and turned to drugs when she felt lonely, something she now really regrets. “To any little sweethearts that are listening … don’t touch [cocaine], it’s the devil.” Though she’s best known for writing her own songs, Gaga discussed the two tracks she’s written for Britney Spears, “Quicksand” (which appeared on the Circus album), and “Telephone,” which Spears recorded, but never released. Asked if it bummed her out that “Telephone” was rejected by Spears, Gaga said, “Hell no! Frickin’ Britney Spears sang my record! I was doing back flips and ordering drinks!” After describing how she came up with “Born This Way” while in the shower, Gaga pulled out her BlackBerry and played a number of early demos of her songs, including the first, vocals-only take on “Highway Unicorn,” her first pass on the chorus to “Judas” and a snippet of a bouncy new song she wasn’t ready to unleash yet. She also described how “Marry the Night” was inspired by the moment when she decided that she was not willing to become another one of those California club people after spending some time on the Left Coast early in her career trying to fit in. ” ‘No thanks … see you later, it’s been nice in the sun,’ and I went back to New York and I married the night,” she said of why she would never move to Cali, preferring the divey, shots-and-pool-table bars in her native city. “Do I feel like a powerful person in show business? Yeah,” she said when Stern wondered if she will use her newfound powers in the industry for good or evil. The appearance also featured a performance of “Glory,” with Gaga prefacing with a story about how it was inspired by her grandfather’s passing, the first death of a close family member she’d ever experienced. “When my grandma was saying goodbye [to my grandfather], there was something so intense that happened for me that I saw … as sad as the moment was, they both were acknowledging that they had really won in life because they had each other,” she said of the 60-year marriage of her grandparents. On the day her grandpa died, Gaga said she and her father sat down at the piano in their home and traded shots of tequila and she told her pops, “Grandpa’s about to cross over into his glorious moment. It’s hard now because he’s on the edge.” Right then, Gaga said she began playing piano and the song just tumbled out of her. She recorded it and played the emerging tune for her grandfather that day over the phone, and she’s convinced he could hear it. He passed just hours later. “It’s about also knowing in your heart that you may never reach that glorious moment until you die, so live life on the edge — halfway between heaven and hell — and let’s all dance in the middle in purgatory,” she said before playing an affecting solo piano version of the tune. And, in honor of Stern’s notoriously luxurious locks, she also performed the Born This Way tune “Hair,” explaining that it was inspired by her rebellious teenage Grateful Dead phase, when her mother would sneak in and chop off her gross, dread-y hair in her sleep to keep her looking neat and clean. New Edition Will ‘Never Forget’ Meeting Michael Jackson

Ricky Bell recalls to MTV News ‘going to the mansion and seeing him skip down the stairs.’ By Rob Markman New Edition Photo: MTV News New Edition are fast approaching 30 years in the music biz, and the Boston boys have a ton of memories since dropping their debut album, Candy Girl, in 1983. For Johnny Gill, his favorite came in 1990 when NE reunited on the MTV Video Music Awards; for Ralph Tresvant, his best memory came after hearing the group’s song on the radio for the first time. Ricky Bell, nodded in agreement, but then recalled another special time — meeting the King of Pop. “I guess Ralph took my number one, but number two would probably be meeting Michael Jackson, being invited to his house. Going to the mansion and seeing him skip down the stairs,” Bell told MTV News before the group performed at DJ Cassidy’s 30th birthday party in New York City on July 6. “Just to meet someone, that icon who inspired you, is a moment I’ll never forget.” New Edition — which includes Bobby Brown, Tresvant, Gill, Bell, Ronnie DeVoe and Michael Bivins — are in the middle of a reunion run after performing in New Orleans at the 2011 Essence Music Festival . In addition to a number of shows they are performing together, NE also have a new album in the works, and if they have it their way, they will continue to add on to three decades’ worth of memorable moments. For Brown, though, it will always start at the beginning. “For me, 30 years would probably be just meeting them,” he said of his bandmates. “Meeting them and being able to have friends in my life and have brothers in my life that weren’t blood brothers, but they were my brothers and they took care of me.” Share your memories of New Edition’s nearly 30 years in the comments below! Eminem Calls Sway’s First Shade 45 Radio Show

MTV News correspondent tries to coax Em to freestyle on first broadcast of ‘Sway in the Morning.’ By Rob Markman MTV News’ Sway Calloway hosts the first day of his new radio show “Sway in the Morning” Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images Sway ‘s a.m. takeover has begun. On Monday (July 18), the MTV News correspondent broadcast his first episode of “Sway in the Morning” on Sirius XM’s Shade 45 , and in addition to playing hip-hop’s hottest tunes, he conducted interviews with Bun B, Lupe Fiasco, Diggy Simmons, Estelle and “Entourage” actor Jerry Ferrara; even Eminem called in to toast the new host. “You played such a vital part in my career and such a big role in hip-hop, we’re just happy to have you,” Eminem, who owns Shade 45, said to Sway. But when Calloway asked for a freestyle, Em joked, “It might be dial tone.” Sway also unearthed an old interview that he conducted with Em, dating back to when the rapper first signed with Dr. Dre. ‘When Em got signed, he came to our house in L.A., and he was just like, ‘Man, I got this opportunity with Dre,’ ” Sway recalled of his and King Tech’s earlier interactions with Em on their legendary on-air “Wake Up Show” in the late 1990s. “Then we had him come up on the radio show to make that announcement and he busted a freestyle, so we played that segment.” That wasn’t all for the debut broadcast: Sway, who co-hosted with Houston on-air personality Devi Dev, played a portion of a never-before-aired interview with the late Tupac Shakur from the set of his “How Do U Want It” video. In the clip, ‘Pac expresses his love for Oakland and downplays the East Coast/ West Coast rivalry of the mid-1990s. “I felt like whatever I am, the Bay Area had something to do with making. So if I’m bad, they had something to do with making me. If I’m good, then they had something to do with making me,” ‘Pac says before showing love to the various cities where he spent his formative years. “Between the East Coast, the Bay Area, L.A. and Baltimore, those places made me.” “All in all, it was good,” Sway told us after the show wrapped on Monday. “We played a lot of hip-hop music and made a good relationship [with the listeners]. I’m going to try to tie in all of these worlds: MTV, Shade 45, pop, politics, culture, music, all of that. At the end of the day, that’s the vision for the show.” Related Artists Eminem

R.I.P. Sean Hoare… Whistleblower Who Blew The Lid Off News Corp.’s Hacking Scandal Found Dead

The man who responsible for exposing the hacking going on at News of the World was found dead but police are saying it’s not suspicious??? What the hell is going on!?!? Sean Hoare, the former News of the World showbiz reporter who was the first named journalist to allege Andy Coulson was aware of phone hacking by his staff, has been found dead, the Guardian has learned. Hoare, who worked on the Sun and the News of the World with Coulson before being dismissed for drink and drugs problems, is said to have been found dead at his Watford home. Hertfordshire police would not confirm his identity, but the force said in a statement: “At 10.40am today [Monday 18 July] police were called to Langley Road, Watford, following the concerns for the welfare of a man who lives at an address on the street. Upon police and ambulance arrival at a property, the body of a man was found. The man was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after. “The death is currently being treated as unexplained, but not thought to be suspicious. Police investigations into this incident are ongoing.” Just to give a little more insight on how crucial Hoare was to bringing a spotlight to the ethical violations by News of the World, he opened up to the New York Times when they were investigating the phone hacking case, telling the paper that his editor Coulson knew of the phone hacking and actively encouraged his staff to intercept the phone calls of celebrities in the pursuit of exclusives. He later spoke to the BBC, claiming that Coulson personally asked him to tap into phones and saying that Coulson’s claim that he was unaware of the practice was “a lie, it is simply a lie”. Hoare spoke to the New York Times again last week, explaining how reporters at the News of the World were able to use police technology to locate people using their mobile phone signals in exchange for payments to police officers. He said journalists were able to use a technique called “pinging” which measured the distance between mobile handsets and a number of phone masts to pinpoint its location. Hoare gave further details about the use of “pinging” to the Guardian last week. He described how reporters would ask a news desk executive to obtain the location of a target: “Within 15 to 30 minutes someone on the news desk would come back and say ‘right that’s where they are.’” He said: “You’d just go to the news desk and they’d just come back to you. You don’t ask any questions. You’d consider it a job done. The chain of command is one of absolute discipline and that’s why I never bought into it, like with Andy saying he wasn’t aware of it and all that. That’s bollocks.” He said he would stand by everything he had told the New York Times about “pinging”. “I don’t know how often it happened. That would be wrong of me. But if I had access as a humble reporter … “ He admitted he had had problems with drink and drugs and had been in rehab. “But that’s irrelevant,” he said. “There’s more to come. This is not going to go away.” Hoare named a private investigator who he said had links with the News of the World, adding: “He may want to talk now because I think what you’ll find now is a lot of people are going to want to cover their arse.” Speaking to another Guardian journalist last week, Hoare repeatedly expressed the hope that the hacking scandal would lead to journalism in general being cleaned up and said he had decided to blow the whistle on the activities of some of his former News of the World colleagues with that aim in mind. He also said he had been injured the previous weekend while taking down a marquee erected for a children’s party. He said he had broken his nose and badly injured his foot when a relative accidentally struck him with a heavy pole from the marquee. Hoare also emphasised that he was not making any money from telling his story. Hoare, who has been treated for drug and alcohol problems, reminisced about partying with former pop stars and said he missed the days when he was able to go out on the town. Hmmmm… So was his death cause by drinking, drugs, the after effects of taking down a marquee or… whistle blower haters??? Considering the police were in on the phone hacking, it doesn’t seem entirely out of the realm of possibility that they could be involved in the cover up of a suspicious murder. This is real suspect. Just sayin’! Source

Question Of The Day: How Do You Monitor Your Children’s Social Networking Activities?

Nosy a$$ mickiefickies…lol Ever wondered why your Mom joined Facebook? Chances are, it was to spy on you. According to a new survey by OnePoll, a whopping 55-percent of parents are using social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, to keep an eye on their children’s online activities; a further 5-percent said they would if they knew how. Eleven percent of parents polled set up their Facebook accounts purely to “snoop” on Jim and Jane, 15-percent have tried to Friend their children (Thanks Mom), with 4-percent of those requests being rejected. Not surprisingly, 13-percent have resorted to logging onto friends accounts in order to check up on their children. When asked to explain their behavior, 36-percent blamed their “overprotective” parental instincts, where as 14-percent said they were just being “nosey”. A sad 24-percent confessed that Facebook was the only way they could find out what their sons and daughters were up to, while 6-percent found that the social networking site allowed them to avoid having “awkward conversations” with their offspring. In 2006, Facebook first opened the door to anyone over the age of 13, including parents. The influx of parental units on the social networking site has not gone down smoothly with school age kids. As of today, there are 7,766 members of the “For the love of god–don’t let parents join Facebook” group, and there are hundreds of other pages dedicated to grumbling about the subject. www.myparentsjoinedfacebook.com, is a website set up purely to collect embarrassing parent/child Facebook moments and share them with the world. It’s worth checking out before accepting your Mom’s friend request. All jokes aside, some people may argue that children deserve their privacy like anyone else, which is partly true. However, with so many crazy folks in the world, especially on the internet, kids online behaviors should be monitored to ensure that they are safe and not subjecting themselves to unknown dangers. For those with parents, how do you monitor your childrens social network use?? Source

‘Harry Potter’ Star Emma Watson Will Be Back Onscreen Soon

‘My Week With Marilyn’ and ‘Perks of Being a Wallflower’ are the first two post-‘Potter’ projects Watson lined up. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emma Watson Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage We hope Emma Watson has already digested her post- “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” brunch. Because now that she’s finished the project that virtually defined a decade of her life, the actress has plenty to look forward to. The 21-year-old starlet did just a few non-“Potter” acting roles during her time with the franchise, only separating herself from Hermione long enough to star in the 2007 BBC film “Ballet Shoes” and lend her voice to 2008’s “Tales of Despereaux.” Now, she has wrapped her first two post-“Potter” films and is excited for people to see her outside of a “Harry Potter” capacity. Up first is the Michelle Williams-starring adaptation of “My Week With Marilyn,” based on Laurence Olivier’s assistant’s account of spending time with Marilyn Monroe (Williams) while she was filming “The Prince and the Showgirl.” Watson plays a character named Lucy who goes on a few dates with leading man Eddie Redmayne. It’s a minor role for a small film (which is slated for release this November), but it’s garnering a lot of attention because of Watson’s involvement. “I’ve seen a trailer for it. It looks pretty amazing,” Watson told MTV News at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards. “I mean, Michelle is an incredible actress, and Eddie Redmayne is also in it, so he did a great job.” But her upcoming film that’s getting the most buzz is the Summit Entertainment adaptation of Stephen Chbosky’s coming-of-age novel, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” Watson plays Sam, the love interest of main character Charlie (played by Logan Lerman). It wrapped shooting several weeks ago, and Watson told us at the Movie Awards that the expectation was to turn it around and get it released quickly. “It’s so funny because I never thought I’d make another sort of high school-esque movie, and here I am in this coming-of-age, American teen [movie],” she said. “But it’s very witty, and it’s very funny and it’s very moving, so I’m excited.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
