Considering the way Tom Brady’s balls have dominated the news cycle for the past week, you may have forgotten that there’s a football game to be played on Sunday. #DeflateGate has served as evidence of just how weird our nation’s press coverage can get (particularly when you throw the Internet into the mix). Marshawn Lynch’s begrudging appearance at Super Bowl media day today served as yet another reminder that pro athletes and sports reporters are locked in a dead-heat to see who can be the most ridiculous. If you’re not familiar with Lynch, he’s a beast of a running back, but kind of a jackass as a human being. His history of bad behavior dates back to when Lynch ran a woman over and fled the scene during his time with the Buffalo Bills. Five years later, Lynch’s behavior is much less harmful, but no less idiotic. Already in hot water with the NFL for his refusal to speak to the media and his fondness for making “obscene gestures” on the field, Lynch was reportedly threatened with $500,000 fine if he didn’t show up to today’s press event. So he showed up. And proceeded to give the exact same answer 25 times: Marshawn Lynch: “I’m Just Here So I Won’t Get Fined” “I’m just here so I don’t get fined,” Lynch warned the reporters on hand. “So y’all can sit here and ask me all the questions y’all want to. I’m gonna answer with the same answer.” He wasn’t kidding. Beast Mode proceeded to say, “I’m here so I won’t get fined,” in response to every single question. Some members of the press expressed their frustration on Twitter, but really – weren’t they kinda playing ball by continuing to ask him questions? Say what you will about Lynch, if it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t have this nugget of YouTube gold: Marshawn Lynch: Hold My D! Family Of Black Teen Found Hung Suspect His Relationship With White Prostitute Caused His Death The family of a 17-year-old black boy found hung to death with dog leas h in August are now convinced that his death was connected to his relationship with a 32-year-old white prostitute, despite a coroner ruling it a suicide prior to the FBI opening their investigation. via NY Daily News A black North Carolina teen whose hanging has prompted a federal investigation had been the victim of racial slurs for dating a 32-year-old white crack-addicted prostitute, the Daily News has learned. Relatives and friends of Lennon Lacy, 17, have rejected a medical examiner’s report that his August death was a suicide. Instead, they suspect the high school football player was the victim of lynching prompted by his love life. “Someone killed him ‘cause he was dating an older white woman,” Justin Jones, 17, a friend of Lacy. The girlfriend, Michelle Brimhall, has gone into hiding since Lacy’s death. Local police have said they are still investigating Lacy’s death despite the coroner ruling it a suicide. “It is implausible for Lennon to have been able to act alone in hanging himself,” the independent pathologist, Dr. Christena Roberts, concluded in her report. Why do Black women have a higher obesity demographic than any other ethnicity in America ??? Study Shows Black Women Are More Likely To Be Obese Despite anti-immigration propaganda, the most recent U.S. census revealed that 77 percent of the American population classifies themselves as white. Although black people only make up 13 percent of the nation’s population, black women have a higher obesity demographic than any other group. Via Medical Daily reports: In order to understand the female black community’s perception of weight, health, and beauty, researchers investigated, and what they found is truly eye-opening. In a study led by Elizabeth Lynch from Rush University in Illinois, a team of researchers recruited the help of 69 black women. According to a recent press release, although the women involved all shared similar economic backgrounds, lifestyles, and ages, they had various body sizes ranging from underweight to obese. Researchers purposely used such a range in order to determine whether black women’s perception of weight was based on their own body size or on shared cultural beliefs. Results, published in the Journal of Nutrition, Education, and Behavior, showed that regardless of their weight all women involved in the study agreed over which figures in the Body Image Scale were overweight, obese, and too fat. Although most agreed that figures six through nine were overweight, few went onto agree that these overweight figures were also too fat. The majority did, however, classify figures eight and nine as obese and too fat. Rather than outright ask the women if they viewed their own bodies as healthy or overweight, the researchers asked the women to match their own figures with the images they had previously categorized. This is where the experiment got interesting. In total, 56 percent of overweight women (BMI 25 or greater) and 40 percent of obese women (BMI 30 or greater) did not classify their own bodies as overweight, obese, or too fat. Astonishingly, only 30 percent of the women who were medically categorized as obese actually viewed their figures as too fat. In fact, it seemed that the generally accepted overweight BMI numbers in the black female participants (BMI of 35) was 10 figures over that accepted by doctors. In an interesting coincidence, it was observed that those are the exact figures recent studies have shown to be the point when weight begins to threaten lifespan. This coincidence may be explained by Lynch’s observation that weight loss in the black community is more driven by the desire to be healthy and stay off medicine than lose pounds. While the exact figures of black women with eating disorders are unknown, studies have shown that these disorders are somewhat rare among black females, Psychology Today reported. According to Lynch, black and white women generally have differing views on weight and beauty. “Research suggests that for white women the concept of beauty is heavily influenced by body size, and body size is also linked tightly to self-esteem. For black women, though, beauty is defined less by body size, and it’s defined more in terms of things like personal style,” Lynch explained in a podcast provided by The Journal of Nutrition, Education, and Behavior. In layman’s terms, Lynch explained that, based on her studies, it seems to be easier for black women to be “big and beautiful” than it is for women belonging to other ethnic backgrounds. While the idea of body confidence and the low numbers of black females with eating disorders may be something noteworthy, there is a point where this body acceptance begins to endanger one’s health. “The fact that women felt that overweight body sizes were not too fat suggests that being told they are overweight, even by a physician, may not be sufficient motivation for them to attempt weight loss,” Lynch explained in the press release. Instead, ethnically sensitive diet programs may prove more effective in bringing about real weight loss results in black women. Lynch suggests using visual aids rather than terms and numbers to explain obesity and future weight loss goals. This would erase any misunderstanding between doctors and patients and perhaps help the patient better understand the severity of their health issue. Discuss….
Twin Peaks co-creator Mark Frost appears to have put an end to the latest flurry of Internet rumors surrounding the resurrection of David Lynch’s seriously weird but beloved cult series. On Dec. 31 an anonymous poster on the 4chan message board, wrote of attending a meeting between Lynch and NBC executives about bringing back a number of the original characters for a third season of the show, which originally aired on ABC from April 1990 to June 1991. The tipster claimed that the idea was in the “early stages” and that NBC executives were a “little on edge” about Lynch “tackling [the series] alone” given the Eraserhead director’s iconoclastic tastes. According to Anonymous, Lynch discussed setting the new season in the modern day, with good Agent Cooper ( Kyle MacLachlan ) stuck in the lodge and bad Cooper in jail. This time, a young female reporter will purportedly “uncover the truth” behind such conundrums as the killer BOB and the Lodge that defies time and space. At the time, those little morsels of unsubstantiated rumor didn’t seem so far-fetched given a report on Moviehole.com in which Frost was quote saying that a season-three storyline is “something we talk about from time to time… If we ever do decide to move forward, I know we have a rich trove to draw from. Cast and crew members, such as the series’ “Log Lady,” Catherine E. Coulson and writer/producer Robert Engels, have also reportedly been contacted about the possibility of resuming their roles.
