‘It’s sort of like, ‘Screw you … deal with it. Come with us on this journey or bye,’ ‘ Adam Levine says of the album’s pop leanings. By James Montgomery Maroon 5’s James Valentine and Adam Levine Photo: The first thing you’ll probably notice about Maroon 5’s Overexposed album is the lengthy list of collaborators attached to it: a Murderer’s Row of pop hitmakers like Ryan Tedder, Shellback and Benny Blanco, with Max Martin helming it all as executive producer. The second thing you’ll probably notice is that it’s called Overexposed. Because, reinvigorated by the worldwide success of their hit “Moves Like Jagger” — which marked the first time the band had written with outside sources (in this case Blanco and Shellback) — M5 make no bones about the fact that, this time out, they’re aiming to become the most popular, inescapable and, yes, overexposed band on the planet. “The title is kind of pre-emptively saying, ‘Hey, we’re overexposed. Deal with it,’ ” frontman Adam Levine told MTV News during the premiere of M5’s new “One More Night” video . “Bands like to do this thing where they’re like, ‘Oh, man, we just didn’t know. Oh my God, it’s so crazy, we just wrote this song,’ and that’s true, but we like that. We want to have that experience, we want to have hits, we want to have songs that, internationally, people are going to know. “It’s exciting when you go to a country you’ve never been to, when you go to Jakarta, and they’re singing the lyrics to ‘Payphone,’ it’s so cool, ” he continued. “And that’s something that we not only love, but we pursue, unabashedly. Our sense of purpose was very dialed in. … We knew what we wanted, we knew in our minds how to achieve it on an album … and I think we found it.” And, in a lot of ways, it’s fitting that Overexposed (in stores now) comes exactly 10 years after the release of Maroon 5’s debut disc, Songs About Jane. Because ever since that album, they’ve been hearing complaints from fans who want them to return to their roots. The difference now is that they no longer listen to those complaints. Backed by the biggest names in the pop business, Maroon 5 are going for greatness these days, and like it or not, they’re not going to change course anytime soon. ” Songs About Jane was alienating a certain amount of our fanbase back then, and if we’re not alienating a small percentage of our fanbase every time we make a record, we’re doing something wrong,” Levine said. “And usually, I find that people who complain about wanting that original sound would be the same people where, if you had a record that sounded like the first one, they would say, ‘Why don’t you guys branch out and change a little bit?’ So it’s sort of like, ‘Screw you … deal with it. Come with us on this journey or bye!’ “When you’ve been in a band for a decade, even longer, you start thinking, ‘OK, well maybe now we should explore this or change things up,’ because you don’t want to have it sound formulaic or too much like what you’ve always done,” he continued. “So we’re totally cool with kind of being born again. … At the heart of it, it still sounds like us, but we embrace this side of our band, and now that we’ve fully captured it on this record, we’re going to see what happens, and I think it’s going to be really positive.” Stick with MTV News for more from our exclusive interview with Maroon 5! More than 5,000 people auditioned on Saturday to see if they have what it takes to be the next Phillip Phillips. By Cory Midgarden Ryan Seacrest Photo: Exactly one month after crowning Phillip Phillips as Season 11’s “American Idol,” the hit television series is once again on the hunt for the next singing superstar. The auditions’ fourth stop drew more than 5,000 hopefuls to the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday, all with dreams (or delusions) of hearing those four life-changing words: “You’re going to Hollywood!” Among the hopefuls “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest, who was confident in Seasons 12’s success. “We actually now realize we don’t know what we’re going to find, and that makes for the best season,” Seacrest said. “When we set out to find something specifically it doesn’t work out as well, so when we don’t know it usually works out best.” Although the show set its sights for nothing particular, many of the singers in attendance knew exactly what they had to offer the show. “I’m someone like Beyonc

Levine and lead guitarist James Valentine were kind enough to premiere the action-packed new music video during “MTV First: Maroon 5” on Monday (June 25), and during the Q&A that immediately followed that debut, Levine revealed that he happily took a beating to prepare for the boxing aspect of the shoot. “I had a little bit of training. I’ll never forget. During the little bit of training, I got the guy who was training me. He hit me, and it hurt,” Levine admitted. “I’ve never really been in a full-blown fight before, but the guy hit me pretty hard. I’m a wimp, so it was worse [for me] than someone who’s tough, but he hit me, and I was like, ‘Oww, man!’ ” Levine said the boxing in the clip, which was born from the video treatment Levine wrote himself and delivered to director Peter Berg , is a metaphor for how our romantic entanglements can sometimes feel like a fight. ” ‘One More Night’ was one of the songs that was more far along when we heard it,” Levine recalled of first hearing the Max Martin and Shellback-produced track. “Shellback, who did ‘Moves Like Jagger’ with us, it was one of those things that the instant we heard it as a group, we thought, ‘Wow.’ “I do love the lyrics,” Levine continued. “The metaphor that we spoke of earlier, a relationship between two people, sometimes when it’s not going so well, it feels like a battle. Against Me! speak for the first time since Laura’s Rolling Stone interview, remembering the ‘simple’ way she told them she’s transgender. By James Montgomery Laura Jane Grace Photo: When Against Me! ‘s Laura Jane Grace announced in Rolling Stone that she was transgender, the majority of the story focused on her life … with only a few paragraphs dedicated to how she broke the news to her bandmates. This was understandable, of course, and though the details included in that RS story are scarce, they’re also incredibly endearing: On the drive from Gabel’s St. Augustine, Florida, studio back to their homes in Gainesville, the AM! guys debated whether or not they needed to hit the gym “so that if anyone messed with Gabel, they’d be able to throw down.” But, when Against Me! sat down with MTV News for their first interview since the Rolling Stone piece shone a spotlight on their band, they revealed that there was another reason the story skimped on particulars about Laura’s big revelation: Namely, to them, it wasn’t really all that big of a revelation to begin with. “We went to the studio just to hang out, we weren’t even practicing, we were just having a meeting, and talking, and she just told us,” longtime bassist Andrew Seward said. “It was kind of simple in a way … [and then] on the drive back, because it’s 80 miles from the studio back to Gainesville, I was just going through past lyrics and stuff going ‘God, how did I not think of that?’ ” “I didn’t want to be melodramatic about it when approaching friends … for me, it is a non-issue. It’s something that’s always been there for me, I’ve just never verbalized it before,” Laura added. “I didn’t really plan on it, I forget what exactly we were talking about, but I got to this point where I felt really frustrated that I wasn’t making the point I wanted to make, and I realized I wasn’t making it because I wasn’t fully explaining myself, and the part I was leaving out was this big integral piece of myself. So it just came out of my mouth, you know, and we were just sitting there and it was like, ‘So this is the way it is.’ ” Still, Laura admitted she had no idea how her bandmates would take the news, or even if they’d still be her bandmates after she told them. All she knew was that, both personally and professionally, she was tired of keeping secrets … she wanted everyone to know she was transgender, repercussions be damned. “I reached a point for myself where writing, I couldn’t focus on anything else but writing from a trans perspective or writing about trans issues, and as the album we’re working on came together, it became more and more apparent to me that, at some point, I was going to have to say something to the rest of the band,” she said. “Otherwise, if you’re taking the lyrics to these songs out of context [they’re] going to be misinterpreted … so we kind of reached that point where once we started getting in to doing vocals and you’re hearing the lyrics I was like, ‘OK, this is the deal. … There are going to be things that are going to be happening for me that, if I don’t tell you this right now will probably look more like I’m insane as opposed to this is what I’m doing.’ ” And yet, no one did. And, after being assured by her bandmates that Against Me! wasn’t going anywhere — “It was just kind of like, ‘Let’s still do the band; let’s still do everything we normally do.’ That’s pretty much the extent of it,” drummer Jay Weinberg said — they’re hard at work on their new album; a conceptual record they’re calling Transgender Dysphoria Blues. It represents Laura’s most personal work to date, an exploration of her battles with shame and depression, and the freedom of her new life. And, with her band backing her, she can’t wait to bring the music to the masses. “For me, the fear was, if I don’t do this and I don’t come out with this now, that the band can’t go on. It was just feeling like this is what I need in order to continue to be doing this,” she said. “Feeling like you’re stereotyped into this role of an angry young male, especially in the punk rock scene, was just suffocating to me … And feeling like so many of the things I was trying to express in my lyrics were being lost on people because it wasn’t being framed in the right context, I didn’t even want to do it anymore. … But now, I do.” Related Videos Laura Jane Grace: A Life Unburdened Related Artists Against Me!
