In the wake of their divorce, we’ve compiled a list of the most heartbreaking She & Him and Death Cab for Cutie tunes. By MTV News staff Ben Gibbard and Zooey Deschanel Photo: Getty Images On Tuesday night, Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and singer/actress Zooey Deschanel announced they had decided to end their two-year marriage. It’s a split that was not only unforeseen, but decidedly sad, too. After all, the pair were basically the go-to indie couple, especially with the recent separation of alt-rock figureheads Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon. Given the rather expansive back catalog of heartbreakers Gibbard and Deschanel have penned over the years for Death Cab and She & Him, respectively, we’re greeting the news with an exceptionally weepy playlist of their saddest songs. It’s a rather somber day, so why not offer up some appropriate tearjerkers? “405” : Gibbard’s hazy rumination on a (somewhat) long-distance relationship gone awry. Mistrust, lies, desperation … it’s the rare song that’s honest (or smart) enough to admit that more often than not, distance does not make the heart grow fonder. “Army Corps of Architects” : A crushing Death Cab tune that details love’s collapse through an extended engineering metaphor (“Call in the Army Corps of Architects/ To flatten the skyline and begin again”), it finishes with a typically boozy kiss-off (“So bring the discrepancies, I’ll pour the drinks”) before fading out with an extended, extra-sad instrumental. Uplifting, it is not. “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” : Gentle acoustic number that’s become a sing-along staple of Death Cab’s live sets, it’s about loving someone so much that the hereafter seems like a mere afterthought. A beautiful sentiment, one that more often than not, never gets the chance to reach fruition. “The Ice Is Getting Thinner” : Harrowing Narrow Stairs closer that documents the gradual, sad deterioration of a relationship (“There was little we could say/ And even less that we could do/ To stop the ice from getting thinner/ Under me and you”) and all the hopelessness that goes with it. Try not to get goose bumps during Chris Walla’s winsome, winding guitar solo in the middle. It’s impossible. “If You Can’t Sleep” : Haunting She & Him tune that brims with the promise of true love and wrestles with the specter of separation (“If you can’t sleep/ I’ll be there in your dreams”), it’s a lullaby in more ways than one. “Sentimental Heart” : Another She & Him selection, this one pairs bright instrumentals (trilling strings, shiny piano chords, soaring vocal harmonies) with lyrics that are very much about the aftermath of a brutal breakup and the rather daunting task of attempting to pick up the pieces. “Someday You Will Be Loved” : This Death Cab tune leaves us on a (relatively) optimistic note of future love. But no matter how hopeful the lyrics appear to be (“You may feel alone when you’re falling asleep/ And every time tears roll down your cheek/ But I know your heart belongs to someone you’ve yet to meet”), it’s hopeless to convince the newly heartbroken that they will ever find love again. “Stay Young, Go Dancing” : A Death Cab song that Gibbard seemingly wrote about his relationship with Deschanel, it opens with him very much at ease with her in Los Angeles (“Life is sweet/ In the belly of the beast”), a town he had very vocally disparaged on the old track “Why You’d Want to Live Here.” From there, it goes on to examine the joy of being with the one you love and staving off the mounting uncertainties of the future simply by believing. And dancing. “Steadier Footing” : A deceptively simple song about wanting to express your love, yet never really having the guts to rise to the occasion, it runs less than two minutes, yet still packs an emotional wallop, a tact Death Cab would employ with similarly crushing effect on the Narrow Stairs track “You Can Do Better Than Me.” “Transatlanticism” : Quite possibly the long-distance relationship song to end all long-distance relationships, it finds Gibbard openly pining for the love he’s separated from, and cursing the great expanses that keep them apart. The fact that it builds to a crashing crescendo and an open-hearted plea (“So come on!”) only makes the inevitability that much tougher to handle. “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” : Decidedly upbeat She & Him song that’s really about throwing yourself at a love who may or may not be interested in returning the favor. Its positivity (“I think you’re just so pleasant/ I would like you for my own”) belies the rather sad desperation contained within. What did we miss? Actor/musician/security guard Derrick T. Tuggle’s smooth moves earned him a starring role in the Keys’ new clip. By James Montgomery Derrick T. Tuggle in The Black Key’s “Lonely Boy” music video Photo: Warner Music Group Forget about that “Evolution of Dance” guy or the “Double Dream Feet” dude. The real Internet dancing sensation may very well be Derrick T. Tuggle, the 48-year-old actor/musician/part-time security guard currently setting the Web ablaze with his smooth moves in the Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy” video . For the uninitiated, the clip stars Tuggle — and only Tuggle — as a herky-jerky dance machine who grooves to the Keys’ new single while standing outside a motel room. Over the course of three-plus minutes, as the sleeves of his dress shirt become increasingly unrolled, he cycles through a series of rather amazing moves (and even mimics a few of the lyrics) before triumphantly thrusting his fist skyward as the song comes to a close. It is a decidedly odd, strangely compelling performance, and because of it, the “Lonely Boy” video — the first clip from the Keys’ El Camino album — has racked up nearly 400,000 views in less than 24 hours. It’s also made a rather unwitting star of Tuggle, even though (up until right now), no one knew his name. But what’s even more amazing is the fact that his star-making turn almost didn’t happen at all, as Tuggle told MTV News on Thursday (October 27). “I was cast as an extra, and there were maybe six or seven other people who were supposedly going to be in the video. … I was the first one to perform in the video. It was a motel shot where the guys from the Black Keys come and give me the keys to their motel room,” he said. “The director just sort of noticed me dancing and asked me, ‘Can you perform?’ I said, ‘I can dance, anybody can dance,’ so I took some moves from everybody: John Travolta from ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and ‘Pulp Fiction,’ the Carlton Banks dance from ‘The Fresh Prince’ and a little bit of Michael Jackson, so it was a smorgasbord of everybody in there. “It was just a spur-of-the-moment thing,” Tuggle added. “My acting teacher Mark McPherson, he has us do this thing before we start class called ‘Song and Dance,’ where he’ll have us sing one of our favorite songs, and then while we’re singing it, he’ll have us do a crazy dance, or a sexy dance, and I guess it spawned from that.” The end result is most definitely crazy — not to mention rather incredible, considering Tuggle nailed the routine in a single take (“As an actor, you have to know your lines, you have to be ready, so I was,” he explained). And though he’s had music-video experience in the past (he’s done background work in clips for the Dave Matthews Band, Lenny Kravitz and Lloyd), he’s never experienced anything quite like the reaction to “Lonely Boy,” and he’s hoping it will translate to more roles in the future. “I’m elated, and I’m still in shock, to be honest. I’ve been out [in Los Angeles] for 10 years, pursuing acting and music, so hopefully this will lead to more work,” he said. “Honestly, I just went down there to do my part and see what would happen. Now, Havoc and Prodigy are set to swing by MTV’s “RapFix Live” on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET to talk about the November release, which they’ll follow-up with their self-titled ninth studio album. The duo will chop it up with Sway about their latest projects, as well as their catalog of classic albums, including 1995’s The Infamous and 1996’s Hell on Earth. Those records ushered the two Queensbridge, New York, MCs to the forefront of the East Coast’s gritty street rap movement. And judging from the crowd’s reaction at this summer’s Rock the Bells Festival , hits like “Shook Ones II” haven’t lost much steam. But the Infamous Mobb Deep have been busy both in and out of the studio. Last month, Hav and Prodigy inked a new deal with Sony’s RED Distribution to release new projects via their Infamous Records imprint. And Prodigy is now a published author. After the release of 2006’s Blood Money, Prodigy served a stint behind bars , emerging this year with the controversial My Infamous Life: The Autobiography of Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, a book that brought back a flood of memories from the heyday of mid-90s rap. M-O-B-B will share the “RFL” couch with Tennessee rapper Gangsta Boo, perhaps best known for her lyrics on Three Six Mafia’s 2000 album, When the Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1, as well as her own solo projects. In addition to a new feature alongside Eminem on “Throw It Up,” the explosive single from Yelawolf’s Radioactive album, Gangsta Boo is gearing up to release an EP with Drumma Boy in February. Flaming Lips will perform classic Beatles tune in tribute to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs at the October 31 show. The O Music Awards 2 have added some heavy hitters to the roster with the announcement that Robyn will headline the October 31 show and the Flaming Lips will pay tribute to late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs during the broadcast. Robyn will take the main stage at the awards show, set to unfold at an as-yet-undisclosed location in Los Angeles at 11:30 p.m. ET. The live, multiplatform event celebrating the artists, innovators and fans who are constantly transforming digital music culture will open with the Swedish singer’s performance (one of several during the show), which will be broadcast on MTV. The rest of the event will unfold on a number of the Viacom Music Group’s websites, including MTV.com , VH1.com , CMT.com , LogoTV.com and MTVHive.com , as well as mobile. Oklahoma’s Lips will pay tribute to the Apple co-founder — who died of pancreatic cancer on October 5 — by performing the Beatles’ “Revolution”; the performance will be recorded on an iPad and broadcast on the O Music site. Additional presenters and performers include Kelly Clarkson, Demi Lovato, Alabama Shakes, Odd Future’s Tyler the Creator, Travie McCoy, Midi Mafia and DJ Diamond Kuts. More performers and presenters will be announced throughout the week. MTV’s signature online awards show will also attempt to make it into the Guinness record books again by hosting the longest dance party in history , and there will be plenty of star wattage on hand to help celebrate should the dancers break the 55-hour barrier. The dance marathon will aim to raise awareness for LGBT youth issues, especially bullying, by giving fans a chance to donate to a number of organizations during the live stream. Among the groups that will benefit from the record attempt are: GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network), It Gets Better , the Gay Straight Alliance Network, Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). Viewers will also be able to use social media to support the cause and cheer on their favorite dancers. In addition, fans can participate via the O Music Awards Facebook page , Twitter and Tumblr . The “Longest Dance Party” event will be live-streamed at the O Music Awards site beginning on October 29 from the Roxy Theatre on Los Angeles’ famed Sunset Strip. Since voting began on September 27, more than 12 million votes have been cast. Fans can continue to vote via the O Music Awards site . The fan that drives the most votes will appear in the live show. My name is Linda Fernanda Zetina Hernández and I am from a small town in Mexico. The day Justin tweeted, “I’m in Mexico City” or something like that, I told my mom and she agreed to come with me to find him. We went to the city that is 2 hours away from my house. We went to his the hotel and we followed the cars Justin went in. In the end, I didn’t end up seeing him. Then my mom and I got to the Foro Sol but we didn’t have tickets. I saw a group of girls that were screaming and crying so I asked them what happened? They told me, “We have M&G passes” and I started crying. I was like, “Really?!” They say yeah of course but I was still crying. Then one man from the staff saw me and I started begging him to let me in with Justin, so he hugged me and said me, “YOU WILL BE MY SPECIAL GUEST”. I think that was the best thing that someone could told say to me. I started to shake and cry even more. Then I got in the M&G and Justin was so cute. I was in so much shock, I didn’t even tell him how much I love him, how many times I was dreaming of this moment, but no, I only started to shake again. Justin hugged me and said, “Take it easy”. I thought that my heart would explode. After that I went to his hotel again but he didn’t go out. Then the next day we went to the concert. My mom was waiting for me outside of the Foro Sol because she didn’t have tickets. Then the BIEBER TEAM went out, saw her and recognized her from being at the hotel.They asked her why she wasn’t in the concert. My mom answered saying she didn’t have tickets, only her daughter did. One of them gave to my mom 2 tickets, in the first line. My mom was crying and she hugged them. Then she went to find me and told me that the Justin Bieber’s team gave her two tickets. I started to cry like crazy! All the beliebers that were with me were crying too because we were so happy. Then in the concert, Justin started to sing ‘U Smile’. Justin sang to me a little and I was practically falling down. My mom started to give me some air waving a piece of paper. Justin also ended up throwing his hat to me, but it fell near the stage so someone in the team gave it to me! All of this was really a dream that I didn’t think would come true. It really was the best thing that ever happened in my life. All the Bieber team and Justin Bieber are angels that come here just to make us happy and show us that believe.
