Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video Should Be ‘Provocative,’ Director Says

‘It kind of leaves you with the feeling that something’s about to happen,’ Marco Brambilla tells MTV News of 90-second clip. By Steven Roberts Kanye West Photo: MTV News Kanye West’s “Power” video , which premieres Thursday (August 5) at 11 p.m. on MTV, is a collaboration between the Louis Vuitton Don and artist Marco Brambilla . When MTV News caught up with the director Wednesday afternoon, he said he and West attempted to paint a portrait of power in the clip. “There’s a lyric in the song — ‘No one man should have this much power’ — so the video kind of answers its own question,” Brambilla said. “It poses the question: ‘What does power and access look like?’ And then: ‘How delicate is it to preserve that moment of time?’ ” Brambilla said they wanted to take a contemporary look at the idea of someone being immortal then becoming mortal, and show it in a way that would connect to art history. He used the Sistine Chapel as a reference point, including a Michelangelo fresco that comes to life. West is the central figure of the piece and represents “power.” Brambilla said West has gone through a tumultuous past year, as expressed in the lyrics of “Power,” and is in a moment of transition. For the video, Brambilla used the photo-montage style of his “Civilization” video installation, which is what caused West to seek out the artist in the first place. “I shot images of the casting, people who came in as dancers and models and actresses in the various poses, and then it was put together as a photograph originally,” Brambilla said. “We had very little time to shoot it. We only had a day to shoot, it so I basically know exactly how each element would look, where each element would go and how the whole piece would choreograph, because there’s about 24 layers of video in the piece, and they are all interconnected. So it’s almost like a visual ballet in a way, and it had to be pre-planned in a very specific way to make it cohesive and to make it work. That was the most challenging part of it: how to [translate] it from a still, a painting, and then make the painting come alive into the filming and the photography.” Amazingly enough, Brambilla was able to accomplish this in a minute and a half. The “Power” clip might only be 90 seconds, but Brambilla said that wasn’t the plan going in. “I made it very clear at the beginning that I wasn’t really interested if it was going to be a music video,” he said. “I wanted to do something which was more like a visual accompaniment to the track, and so it didn’t really need to be any specific length and it didn’t really need to be the whole song. It needed to kind of introduce the song in a different way and a fresh way, and I came with this continuous shot with no cuts, no lip sync, and the minute, minute and a half just … seemed like the perfect amount of time to show a video portrait. “It didn’t answer all the questions,” he added. “It just becomes more provocative and a little bit more tense at the end, because it cuts away just before the action within it resolves itself, so it kind of leaves you with the feeling that something’s about to happen.” Don’t forget to tune in to MTV tonight at 11 p.m. ET/PT for the premiere of Kanye’s “Power” video and check MTVNews.com for full coverage of the clip. Bruno Mars Shows His ‘Darker’ Self On ‘The Other Side’ Video

Collaboration with Cee-Lo and B.o.B is Mars’ first single off debut EP. By Jayson Rodriguez Bruno Mars Photo: MTV News On Wednesday, Bruno Mars premiered his latest video , “The Other Side,” showing the Hawaiian-born rehearsing, participating in a photo shoot and aimlessly wandering around Los Angeles. According to Mars, the moody visuals match the spirit of the song. “The truth of the matter is, I’m complicated/ You’re as straight as they come,” he sings on the fast-paced number. “You go about your day, baby/ While I hide from the sun/ It’s better if you don’t understand/ ‘Cause you won’t know what it’s like till you try.” ” ‘The Other Side,’ which is the darker side of Bruno Mars, it’s me, Cee-Lo and B.o.B, we all got on the track and it’s one of my favorite records on the CD,” he told MTV News. “Just because it’s so unique, and I think the story behind the song, when you listen to the lyrics, it says, ‘It’s better if you don’t understand.’ And to me, it was so powerful that we actually named the EP that.” It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, Mars’ debut, features just four songs. After his success behind the scenes as a producer, Mars broke out this year as a featured artist on B.o.B’s #1 hit “Nothin’ on You” and on Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire.” Now, Mars is concentrating on his solo work. In May, he told MTV News that being in the spotlight wasn’t necessarily a part of his plans, but when he was given the chance, he was more than prepared. “The journey wasn’t short at all — it was trial and error and trial and error,” Mars said. “It was just back and forth, man. But once ‘Nothin’ on You’ blew up, I had these songs in my back pocket, and the label thought it’d be a good time to give people a little taste of what they’re gonna get with the album. The EP came together real nice; you’re gonna get a nice effect of what’s in store.” Are you excited to hear more of Bruno Mars’ music? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Bruno Mars

Amy Winehouse Says New Album Will Be Out By January

Troubled singer promises return to Back to Black sound with ‘a lot of jukebox stuff.’ By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: Martin Fraser/ FilmMagic It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost four years since Amy Winehouse released her Grammy-winning breakthrough album, Back to Black. But after almost two years spent in a wilderness of drugs , divorce , serious health issues , multiple court cases and nonstop personal drama , Winehouse told London’s Metro newspaper that she’s ready to put the spotlight back on her music with a new album she hopes to have out by January. At the premiere of the film “Psychosis,” directed by new boyfriend Reg Traviss, Winehouse, 26, told Metro, “The album will be six months at the most,” noting that the sound will be similar to the retro soul on Black. “It’s going to be very much the same as my second album, where there’s a lot of jukebox stuff and the songs that are … just jukebox, really.” Though she didn’t explain what she meant by “jukebox,” Winehouse has reportedly recorded some tracks on the island of St. Lucia with producer Salaam Remi, who collaborated with her on Black. Winehouse also explained her blunder-filled performance with Mark Ronson last week at London’s 100 Club, in which she appeared to forget the lyrics to the song “Valerie,” from Ronson’s Version covers album. She told Metro that a musical mix-up caused the confusion during the gig. “Mark and I recorded two versions of ‘Valerie,’ ” she said. “We released the one that came out like the Supremes, but I play the other version with my band. When I got there, I completely forgot it was his version we were singing, so I was probably a bit out of sync. It was really fun to be onstage with him, though.” After the gig last week, Ronson said he plans to reteam with Winehouse on the new album, but was waiting until she had at least 10 songs together before hitting the studio with her. In the meantime, they have recorded one song together for an upcoming tribute to music legend Quincy Jones. While her live show has often been iffy at best in the past, Winehouse said she’s excited to have a wider repertoire to choose from when she starts touring for the new album. “I just can’t wait to have some new songs onstage, really.” Winehouse’s spokesperson confirmed to MTV News that the singer is working on new material but said no official release date has been set. Though visa issues appear to be currently holding her up, Winehouse is also reportedly planning to record songs for a supergroup album with the Roots’ drummer, ?uestlove, and Remi. While the group doesn’t have a name yet, ?uest said he plans to sit down and talk with Winehouse soon about laying down some tracks. Are you excited about a new Amy Winehouse album? Family Guy’s ‘Down Syndrome Girl’ Song Gets Emmy Nod

“Down Syndrome Girl,” the unfunny and offensive Family Guy song poking fun at a female character with special needs, has been nominated for an Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. The Feb. 14 Family Guy episode, which the song appeared in, sparked outrage after its premiere – most notably from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin who has a son with Down syndrome. At one point in the episode, the character with Down syndrome said that her mom was “the former governor of Alaska,” a clear reference to Palin and her son, Trig. Palin quickly criticized the show for the distasteful jab at her son. “[W]hy make it tougher on the special needs community? When is enough enough? When are we going to be willing to say some things just aren’t really funny?” she said on Feb. 16. In the aftermath, many celebrities stood in agreement with Palin, including talk show host Joy Behar, the Daily Show’s Mo Rocca and comedian Jessica Kirson. But now the song is being nominated for an Emmy award, facing off against the much more tasteful musical numbers, “Nothing Suits Me Like a Suit” from “How I Met Your Mother,” and Saturday Night Live’s “Shy Ronnie.” New York magazine noted that the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics award has been “gaining a reputation as Emmy’s quiet nod to First Amendment rights.” Last year, the Justin Timberlake-Andy Samberg collaboration “Motherlover” won the award, and in 2007 the same two artists won for the song “Dick in a Box.” While both are fairly offensive in content, the lyrics are actually funny – and stop short of mocking people with disabilities. But many people argued that the lyrics of “Down Syndrome Girl” went too far. These are some lines from the song, as transcribed by the MRC’s Noel Sheppard: And though her pretty face may seem a special person’s wettest dream. You must impress that ultra-boomin’, all consumin’, poorly-groomin’, Down Syndrome girl. You want to take that little whore and spin her on the dancing floor. My boy between the two of us we’ll get her on the shorty bus and then you’re gonna take it on a whirl. Now go impress that super-thrilling, wish-fulfilling, YooHoo-spilling, ultra-swinging, boner-bringing, gayly-singing, dingalinging, stupefying, fortifying, as of Monday shoe lace-tying, stimulating, titillating, kitty-cat impersonating, mega-rocking, pillow talking, just a little crooked walking, poorly-pouting, poopie-sprouting, for some reason always shouting, fascinating, captivating, happiness and joy-creating, Down Syndrome girl. The Down syndrome episode wasn’t the first time the Family Guy’s offensive content generated controversy. The program’s creators also aired a show that staged “Terri Schiavo: The Musical” and another episode mocking Jewish people called “When You Wish Upon a Weinstein” that was banned from TV.

Local CBS Staff Join Hollywood Celebs in ‘The Dream Lives On’ Boston Pops Tribute to Kennedys

Less than an hour before CBS’s Craig Ferguson-hosted 10 PM EDT “ Boston Pops Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular” national broadcast on Sunday night, local anchors Jack Williams and Lisa Hughes from Boston’s CBS-owned television station , along with a couple of local actors, took to the stage to narrate the music-accompanied “The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers.” ( Video: downloadable from NB twenty second wmv clip of Williams and Hughes in action.) Introducing the 20-minute production carried by WBZ-TV channel 4 in Boston in its 8-10 PM EDT coverage, Pops conductor Keith Lockhart ludicrously insisted it was “not political” — even though it takes its name from Ted Kennedy’s very political 2008 Democratic convention speech aimed at motivating Democrats to push for left-wing policies, starting with nationalized health care, and culminates by quoting the call to arms in that address: “If we set our compass true, we will reach our destination. The work begins anew, the hope rises again and the dream lives on!” That line was read by actor Morgan Freeman Jr. in the original May 18 production at Boston’s Symphony Hall ( mov video excerpt ) and coinciding with the concert at Boston’s Hatch Shell along the Charles River, the Pops trumpeted : On July 4, the Boston Pops will release a CD featuring the live recording of the world premiere performances of “The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers,” which took place at Symphony Hall May 18 & 19 with guest narrators Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris, and Cherry Jones… In liner notes for the CD (PDF) , composer Peter Boyer expressed a “deep admiration for the Kennedys” and related: [I]t was not until I began to research his life for this project that I became more fully aware of the remarkable scope of his legislative achievements , over more than four decades. For me, the most inspiring aspects of the Kennedy brothers’ legacy are a commitment to idealism, and a sense of enduring optimism for our nation and for mankind. Thus the title of the work, The Dream Lives On, is taken from one of Ted Kennedy’s last public speeches, at the Democratic National Convention in 2008. My May 16 NewsBusters post, “ Leading Actors Lend Their Voices to Boston Pops’ Tribute to the Kennedy Brothers, ” described: A production which “combines quotes from speeches by the Kennedy brothers with original text and video, accompanied by a dramatic orchestral and choral score” so it “pays tribute to the towering achievements and singular spirit epitomized by the Kennedy brothers – the call to public service, drive for social change, and the legacy of optimism for America’s future.”… A promotional video features “Tony Award-winning lyricist Lynn Ahrens” relating the lyrics she created for the concert: Now on the rain-slicked streets of Boston and across the wind-swept Cape Code sea, over the din of Washington’s halls and down the halls of history, their passionate words can still be heard, their highest ideals a clarion call; these three American brothers inspiring the best in us all. More celebrity performances are to come: Actor Alec Baldwin will take the lead for a July 18 performance at Tanglewood and actor Chris Cooper will narrate a Hyannis Village Green event on August 1.

Drake Drops New Verse On ‘Lose My Mind’ Remix At BET Awards

Drizzy references Thank Me Later first-week sales in spankin’ new verse during performance with Young Jeezy. By Mawuse Ziegbe Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Drake wasted no time celebrating his stellar first-week sales, dropping a new verse to Young Jeezy’s “Lose My Mind” at the 2010 BET Awards. The Toronto MC was joined by the hip-hop snowman and the duo rocked a version of Jeezy’s single. Jeezy rose from a platform beneath the stage during the last portion of Drizzy’s set, in a white jacket with buckles, and launched into the first verse of the steely track. Initially it appeared the superstar MC, who had already won the award for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist earlier in the night, was content to fall back and let Jeezy rock, chiming in here and there. But it wouldn’t be Drizzy if he didn’t come hard with the lyricism. Jeezy hollered “Remix!” as Drake spit a new verse which referenced the incredible first-week numbers of his debut, Thank Me Later, which dropped on June 15: “You say you like it like that/ I think I like it too/ Half a million in a week/ It’s only right I do.” The new verse followed a varied performance from Drizzy, who kicked off his set with a quiet rendition of his Thank Me Later opener, “Fireworks.” Then sporting a dark letterman’s jacket, Drizzy descended from his platform and launched into an amped-up version of “Over,” spitting the lyrics with fiery abandon. The performance was another highlight in a big night for Drake who was up for three awards and already beat out MCs like Jay-Z and Ludacris for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist. The set also marked a triumphant return to the BET Awards for the MC who was confined to a stool during last year’s performance after tearing his ACL What did you think of Drake and Jeezy’s performance? Chris Brown Melts Down During BET Awards Michael Jackson Tribute

Singer dances flawless but is overcome by emotion when time comes to sing. By Rochell Thomas Chris Brown at the 2010 BET Awards Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images When Jamie Foxx, Ne-Yo and New Edition were performing tributes to Michael Jackson during last year’s BET Awards show, Chris Brown was nowhere to be found, even though many felt he was an obvious choice to honor the fallen legend. Brown’s assault on Rihanna several months earlier presumably kept him out of the show. On Sunday night (June 27), Brown finally got his chance to publicly honor the man he idolized — and while his dancing was flawless, when the time came for him to sing, he simply fell apart. After being introduced by Jermaine Jackson, Brown beautifully channeled Michael as he danced to “Remember the Time,” “Smooth Criminal” and “Billie Jean.” Yet when he grabbed a mic to sing “Man in the Mirror,” he choked up, visibly weeping. “I’m gonna make a change for once in my …” Brown’s voice trailed off. He was out of breath and sounded hoarse. Tears stained his cheeks as he paced the stage, holding the microphone by his side. “This … wind is blowing my … Who am I to…” He clearly knew the lyrics but they failed to come out. Brown faded in and out of the song, closing his eyes, grimacing, trying to soldier on. Whether it was the emotion of the moment or the past 16 months, Brown struggled and failed to find his voice, even though the pre-recorded backing vocals played on. Finally, he gave up, raised a bandaged finger to the sky and fell to his knees as Michael Jackson’s voice could be heard saying, “I’m starting with the man in the mirror.” The camera cut from Brown to an audience member who clearly uttered “Oh my God,” in shock. The audience loudly sang the words that Brown could not. Their aid seemed to move Brown to rise from his knees and mouth the words along with Jackson’s voice, while gesturing along with the mic as tears rolled down his face. In the audience, actress Taraji P. Henson could be seen mouthing, “That’s all right baby,” as Brown walked offstage to Jermaine Jackson, who moved to console him. Brown’s emotional performance echoed through the rest of the show. When Niecy Nash came onstage to present the Video of the Year award, she said, “When Chris Brown started crying I got choked up.” What did you think of Chris Brown’s Michael Jackson tribute at the BET Awards? Michael Jackson’s Brother Jermaine Celebrates King Of Pop On ‘Larry King’

The Jackson family still hasn’t ‘come to terms’ with MJ’s death a year later, Jermaine says. By Eric Ditzian Jermaine Jackson on “Larry King Live” Photo: CNN On June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson’s family and friends gathered at Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, California, to lay the King of Pop to rest in the Grand Mausoleum. Almost one year later, shortly before the actual anniversary of his death, MJ’s brother Jermaine returned to the site to tape an interview with Larry King. “It’s been tough,” Jermaine told the talk-show host. “It went so fast. We’ve been just putting the pieces together and the family’s been having a lot of meetings and we’re just trying to hold on. We haven’t come to terms. It’s something we’re learning to live with. We will never accept it.” Speaking softly and quietly, Jackson said the inside of the mausoleum is dark and cold. “To walk this corridor, and all you hear is your footsteps. Michael shouldn’t be here. I always felt that,” he said, adding that MJ should have been buried at his Neverland Ranch estate. A year later, Jackson said Michael’s three children, Prince, Paris and Blanket, are enjoying as normal a life as possible. They love movies, Jermaine said, though he is not sure if they’ve seen “This Is It,” the documentary about Michael’s final months as he prepared for what were to be his comeback shows in London. Jermaine also revealed that they do not visit their father’s gravesite at Forest Lawn. Each of the family members, Jackson said, continues to grieve in their own ways. And they continue to raise questions about the circumstances surrounding MJ’s death. Jermaine acknowledged that numerous interventions had been made concerning Michael’s use of various prescription medications but denied any suggestion that his brother did not want to live. Rather, Jermaine said the family believes Michael was murdered and that Dr. Conrad Murray , the singer’s personal physician who was charged with involuntary manslaughter as a result of MJ’s propofol overdose, is not the sole person responsible for the death. “All of us feel that he’s the fall guy,” Jermaine said. “It’s higher up than just the doctor. “He did say on numerous occasions, at times to my mother, that he felt that he was being threatened, someone was trying to kill him,” Jermaine added about his brother. While the Jackson family awaits the start of Murray’s trial , which they plan to attend, they lament the way the pop singer has been treated by the media, the public and prosecutors in the years before his death. “If you listen to the content of his lyrics and his music, that’s what he is, that’s what he wrote from his heart, from his soul,” Jackson said. “And it’s sad, because now people realize what kind of person he was all along. But he’s not here to see that. He got a bum rap because he was so misunderstand. He was trying to take the world on his shoulders and to bring an awareness to the world of what we need to do as people.” Related Videos Remembering Michael Jackson – One Year Later Related Photos Michael Jackson: A Life In Photos Michael Jackson: A Fashion Icon Related Artists Michael Jackson Jermaine Jackson

Miley Cyrus Says Can’t Be Tamed Is All About Female Empowerment

‘It’s just about freeing yourself from anything you think is holding you back,’ she says of her new album. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Miley Cyrus Photo: MTV News Miley Cyrus has always been about girl power. Her tracks like “7 Things” and “The Climb” may at first glance seem like party anthems or weepy ballads, but she thinks that upon closer inspection her lyrics empower young women. And she says the tracks on her new album, Can’t Be Tamed, are no different. “I think ‘Tamed’ does it the best, and ‘Liberty Walk,’ ” she told MTV News. “It’s just about freeing yourself from anything you think is holding you back. And I think that’s really important, especially for girls, because so many people are told, ‘No, you can’t do something,’ or, ‘You need to be this because Mom and Dad say that, teachers say this.’ ” Her advice? Try to see what advice makes the most sense for your life. “Really think about what you want to do for the rest of your life,” the 17-year-old said. “There’s a short amount of time, when you think about it, and no day needs to go by wasted.” As for “Liberty Walk,” Cyrus said she tried to combine a very serious topic with a lighter sound. “I wrote it for women that feel like they’re stuck in abusive relationships, but it’s a dance song,” she said. “So you think that must be kind of a sad ballad, but it’s a party song. … It’s about breaking free.” Which new Miley Cyrus song is your favorite?
