Grammy Night Winners And Losers

Adele, Jennifer Hudson, LL Cool J nail it, while Nicki Minaj stumbles. By Gil Kaufman Adele wins at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Any way you cut it, Sunday night’s Grammys were huge for Adele , the Foo Fighters and Kanye West . All three artists came away with an armload of golden gramophones at a ceremony that artfully managed to celebrate the vibrancy of contemporary music while finding just the right way to pay tribute to fallen diva Whitney Houston . Adele swept the night’s major categories , taking Song, Record and Album of the Year on the way to putting a check beside all six of her nominations, with the Foos just behind with five wins and an absent Kanye nabbing four. But who really stole the spotlight at the show and who managed to win without nabbing any hardware? Let’s take a look at the true winners and losers at the ceremony. Winner: LL Cool J Not only did Uncle L get some serious prime-time exposure and represent for hip-hop on music’s biggest night, but he opened the show with a thoughtful, perfectly measured prayer for Houston that set the tone for the entire evening. Winner: Jennifer Hudson Note to any singer thinking about tackling “I Will Always Love You” ever again: Don’t bother. Hudson ‘s spine-tingling, perfectly pitched tribute to Whitney was a show-stopping cover of the trickiest, biggest song in the late singer’s repertoire that nearly stole the night. It was made all the more dramatic by the feeling that avowed superfan Hudson was legitimately on the verge of tears throughout the performance. Loser: Nicki Minaj Though it had plenty of energy, Nicki’s confusing, all-over-the-place “Exorcist”-meets-sexy-gothic/horror religious allegory was Grammy night’s most polarizing performance . Parts of “Roman’s Holiday” felt ripped right from the Madonna and Lady Gaga handbook of outrage — fitting, since Gaga’s former right-hand woman/choreographer, Laurieann Gibson, was Nicki’s collaborator — but some hip-hop purists felt she was reaching for the pop brass ring too hard. Loser: Anyone who thought they were going to win a major award As if there had been any question going into the night who would take the three biggies, it became clear, despite some tough competition from Best New Artist Bon Iver, Bruno Mars, the Foo Fighters, Gaga and Kanye, that this would be Adele’s night. Winner: Adele See above. Her comeback performance and well-deserved win were a shot in the arm to the recording industry and a win for the Academy for recognizing new talent. Winner: Foo Fighters The nice-guy Grammy-bait band had a big night and two high-energy performances that cemented their status as their generation’s most consistent, hard-working rock act. Plus, they pulled off that mashup with deadmau5 while totally keeping their dignity intact. Winner: EDM/Skrillex As if the millions of rave-happy kids across the planet needed the validation, Sunday night was the global coming-out party for the electronic dance music genre. Skrillex nabbed three awards , and the tribute segment featuring deadmau5 and David Guetta was one of the night’s most unexpected surprises. Loser: Lady Gaga Used to being the center of attention, Gaga kept her seat all night as she tried to look comfortable in a netted mask, metallic outfit and oversized golden cane. Winner: Chris Brown Making his return to the show three years after he scratched following his assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna , > link type=”content” id=”1679084″> Brown commanded the stage with an acrobatic performance. More importantly, while accepting the Best R&B Album award for F.A.M.E., he kept it brief and thanked the two constituencies that paved his road to redemption: his fans and the Recording Academy. David Guetta, deadmau5 Get EDM Some Grammy Shine

Skrillex, Avicii, Duck Sauce, Swedish House Mafia and Robyn also contenders for Best Dance Recording at Sunday’s show. By Adam Stewart David Guetta Photo: Larry Marano/ Getty Images Kudos to the Academy. They’ve pretty much nailed it when it comes to the Grammy nominees in what’s arguably the most-important dance-related category Sunday night: Best Dance Recording. In 2011, the U.S. EDM market saw an explosion the likes of which hadn’t seen since the punk rock revolution back in the ’90s, and those given the nod are a testament to its abounding success. A category once graced by Madonna, Britney and Gaga is now overrun by the Prince of Dubstep, a monstrous mouse, a turntable whiz and his NYC cohort, three rock stars of house, a Frenchman with a Swedish prodigy and a girl who originally showed us love in the ’90s. Each one of the nominees was not only at the helm for producing a killer track, but was at the forefront of a movement that is changing the tastes of the American mainstream and truly defining cool culture. In further recognition of EDM’s explosion, the Grammys have lined up an all-star crew for a dance-music performance Sunday night in a tent outside Staples Center. Chris Brown, the Foo Fighters and Lil Wayne will join EDM superstars deadmau5 and David Guetta for a genre-busting performance that will highlight dance/electronica music. This marks the first Grammy performance to shed light on the increasingly popular genre, which has recently seeped into every form of music. For anyone still getting their feet wet in the scene, fear not: We’ve broken down the Best Dance Recording noms, put together a little prediction of who will probably win, based on how these things have gone in the past, and who should win — as in, what might best be accepted and respected by the EDM masses. It could very well be a pivotal year for the Grammys — if they get it right. Best Dance Recording Nominees deadmau5 and Greta Svabo Bech, “Raise Your Weapon” : deadmau5 went dubstep with this little experiment, and it earned him high marks. The angelic vocals of Bech, juxtaposed with signature ruff and rugged dubstep riffs, this track catapulted itself into a monster. deamau5 again showcased his versatility while (for the most part) maintaining that signature deadmau5 sound, but was it original enough for what we usually expect from this seemingly unconquerable musical madman? Duck Sauce , “Barbra Streisand” : In 2009, iconic NYC house-music icon Armand Van Helden paired up with Canadian spin master A-Trak in a collaborative effort named after the most popular of all condiments in pan-Asian cuisine. Since then, they’ve become one of the most popular dance acts around, in large part due to this crossover smash that pays homage to one of America’s most beloved entertainers. The tune is decked out with a spirited house groove and a vocal hook that everyone knows the words to. You’d have to have lived on the moon to not have heard this one, and have no soul to do anything but love it. David Guetta and Avicii , “Sunshine” : True EDM fans can’t complain on this one. It’s progressive house at its finest. EDM loyalists all the world over were ecstatic to see Guetta distancing himself from the Peas and picking up on Avicii, who is simply one of the most insanely talented producers out there. Try listening to this tune and not smiling ear to ear. It combines Avicii’s signature piano riffs and progressive charm with Guetta’s thunderous big room house and ability to produce bangers at a moment’s notice. The production value of “Sunshine” is precise, clean and harmonious. If the Academy is properly tuned in, this thumper has a good chance of coming out the victor. Robyn , “Call Your Girlfriend” : Taking nothing away, this is a killer tune by one of the key players in the dance-music crossover. However, it was Kaskade’s remix (un-nominated) that truly resonated with the EDM masses. Regardless, the original was a monster in the mainstream, and the killer cut off the third installment of Body Talk has absolutely taken Robyn to new heights and solidified her place as one of the all-time dance-music greats. Skrillex , “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” : This track was Dubstep 101 to anyone who’d never heard the genre. Call it “brostep” if you will, but you can’t deny that it expanded the sonic pallet of anyone who dared to listen to it. Some would say EDM noobs as a whole probably think the track defines the movement as a whole, which is less than accurate. Never the less, Skrillex and “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” is a very fitting example of what helped push dance music into the spotlight in 2011. Don’t be surprised to see Skrillex walking away with the golden gramophone. Swedish House Mafia , “Save the World” : The year 2011 was perhaps an incubation period for the rock stars of house. Having released just a pair of tracks in the calendar year, the Swedes went a little more pop on this than they had in the past, but nevertheless, still gave their loyal following what they wanted with a killer hook and an impossible-not-to-sing-along vocal provided by fellow Swede John Martin. If videos were involved in the selection, this would certainly take the prize. Heroic puppies and house music? A match made in heaven. Who Should Win David Guetta and Avicii, “Sunshine” Who Probably Will Win Skrillex, “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Madonna on M.I.A. Middle Finger: Out of Place, Childish

Add Madonna to the list of those who thought M.I.A.’s actions during halftime of Super Bowl XVLI were stupid and childish. A few days after she anchored a mostly positively-reviewed show , The Material Girl called in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest and reacted to M.I.A’s action as follows: “I was really surprised. I didn’t know anything about it. I wasn’t happy about it. “I understand it’s punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy, and positivity, it seemed negative. It’s such a teenager… irrelevant thing to do.. here was such a feeling of love and unity there. What was the point?” M.I.A. Gives the Finger In a separate interview, Madonna later told Carson Daly that M.I.A. did call her to apologize, but the iconic artist concluded of the action: “It was just out of place.”

Madonna Thinks M.I.A. Super Bowl Finger-Flip Was ‘Out Of Place’

Pop star also addresses rumors that Britney Spears is on MDNA in interview with Ryan Seacrest. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna performs at Super Bowl XLVI Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic In the days since M.I.A. hit the Super Bowl stage and threw her middle finger up in the air, Madonna has remained mum on the subject. Until now. The singer called into Ryan Seacrest ‘s radio show Friday morning and finally shared her sentiments on the rapper’s naughty hand gesture and the headlines it made in wake of the show. Sarcastically calling it “punk rock,” Madge said she didn’t realize it happened until after she walked off the stage, noting that she couldn’t keep track of everything that was happening while the performance was taking place. But, once she did find out, she wasn’t amused by her “Give Me All Your Luvin’ ” collaborator’s actions. “I was really surprised. I didn’t know anything about it. I wasn’t happy about it. I understand it’s punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy and positivity; it seemed negative,” she said. “It’s such a teenager, irrelevant thing to do. … There was such a feeling of love and unity there. What was the point? It was just out of place.” She later added that despite the snafu she “was overwhelmed. I started crying. I felt an incredible sense of warmth, love, and support. To see an entire stadium light up like candles it was … like a religious experience.” Much like Madonna, fellow Super Bowl halftime performer Cee Lo Green had no idea that M.I.A. had given the middle finger during the show. “Honestly, I did not hear anything about it,” he continued. “There was no talk about it in the dressing room afterwards and we didn’t stay long after the performance because it was honestly a relief we had had it done. So I didn’t hear anything until I got up to do the morning show, ‘Today.’ And television is a very sensitive [thing].” With that controversy behind her, Madge is looking to the future. She’s next set to start work on her world tour and shoot her video for the second MDNA single, “Girls Gone Wild.” As for those rumors that Britney Spears is on the track she said, “No, it’s just little, ol’ me. She can come on stage and perform with me.” What did you think of M.I.A.’s Super Bowl gesture? Leave your comment below. Halle Berry Fleeing U.S. Due to Death Threats?

Halle Berry does not want to move to France with young daughter Nahla and fiance Olivier Martinez to spite Gabriel Aubry – she fears for her life, according to reports. TMZ reports that Halle is motivated by security in asking a judge for permission to move to France with Nahla – something Gabriel Aubry is trying to block. There have apparently been serious threats to Halle’s life – from one man in particular – and she feels the move out of the country is a life or death situation. Robert Hoskins, a mentally unstable man, escaped from a mental institution last week and has made threats against Halle, specifically to “slit her throat.” Hoskins threatened to slit Madonna’s throat in the past and was actually shot by her bodyguard in 1995 after he trespassed onto the pop star’s property. As if that weren’t enough, another stalker who recently trespassed onto Halle’s property multiple times in the past has just been released from jail. Halle is particularly concerned because Starmaps and some Hollywood bus tours literally take tourists to her doorstep, and it freaks her out. The actress is also concerned that Gabriel Aubry , Nahla’s father, is parading in front of paparazzi almost daily and possibly putting her at risk. A judge has yet to rule on her request to skip town. [Photo: WENN.com]

Missy Elliott And Timbaland To Drop Solo LPs In June

‘We want to do it as a movement,’ Timbo tells MTV News of releasing new material at the same time. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ricky Louis Timbaland Photo: MTV News Timbaland and Missy Elliott make a perfect musical match. Though it’s been a while since we’ve seen the two in full swing, the Virginia duo will join forces once again in a very big way later this year. “Me and Missy are both coming with our albums at the same time, and it will be in June,” Timbo told MTV News in his Miami home February 3. It’s been three years since Timbaland released Shock Value II and seven years since Missy dropped The Cookbook. If all goes according to plan, fans won’t have to wait much longer. “Right now, we’re preparing to get both our videos, our first singles, shot kinda at the same time,” Tim said. “We want to do it as a movement and spontaneously.” Last June, Missy revealed to People magazine she had been diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder Graves’ disease. Initially, it was speculated that Missy’s health was the cause of the huge gap in her discography, though Elliott later issued a statement dismissing that notion. The “Get Ur Freak On” rapper has been putting in plenty of work behind the scenes as a songwriter and producer for Keyshia Cole, Monica and Jazmine Sullivan. She even hooked up with Timbo on Demi Lovato’s “All Night Long” from the pop singer’s 2011 Unbroken album. Missy is also a guest vocalist on J. Cole’s next single, “Nobody’s Perfect,” and is expected to appear in the song’s upcoming video. It all seems like an exciting build to a triumphant return for both artists. “I just don’t want to move too ahead of her and she don’t want to move too ahead of me,” Timbaland said. “So we’re both doing it at the same time.” What do you think of Timbaland and Missy’s plan to drop their new albums at the same time? Young Money Barbie will release ‘Starships’ a day after awards show telecast. By Nadeska Alexis Nicki Minaj Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj is in takeover mode. The Young Money rapper donned her best cheerleader outfit for the Super Bowl halftime show with Madonna on Sunday night, and next week she’ll storm the Grammys — performing her new song “Roman Holiday” — before officially releasing her latest Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded single “Starships.” On Monday, February 13, just a day after the Grammy telecast, Nicki’s “Starships” will premiere on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show and make its way to iTunes shortly afterward. The performance will mark her first time on the Grammy stage, an honor she adds to noms for Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Album for her 2010 debut Pink Friday. She’s so talented that this sh– is scary,” he told Complex. She really is the female Weezy . Hands down, she bad as a mother—-er. M.I.A.’s Super Bowl Flip-Off Was A Mystery To Cee Lo Green

Singer tells MTV News exclusively that he ‘did not hear anything about’ the U.K. rapper’s middle-finger salute until Monday morning. By Jocelyn Vena M.I.A. performs at the Super Bowl Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images While NBC and the NFL are apologizing for the middle finger that M.I.A. flashed during her portion of the halftime show at the Super Bowl on Sunday, her fellow halftime performer, Cee Lo Green, is making no apologies for the fumble — mostly because he didn’t know anything about it until the game was long over. “Well I know that there’s a lyric that says that ‘I don’t give a sh–,’ and that I know that that part is censored,” he told MTV News late Monday when he jumped on the phone with us to talk about hitting the stage with Madonna and company during her elaborate halftime spectacle. For those who are not familiar with all the controversy, when M.I.A. hit the stage to perform her portion of Madonna’s new single, “Give Me All Your Luvin,’ ” she gave home viewers the middle finger at the tail-end of her performance. Quickly, it prompted an outrage from viewers, the Parents Television Council and had TMZ sources sharing that if a fine is thrown down by the FCC, the rapper would be responsible for it. Regardless of the outcome, Cee Lo is brushing it all off. “Honestly I did not hear anything about it,” he continued. “There was no talk about it in the dressing room afterwards and we didn’t stay long after the performance because it was honestly a relief we had had it done. So I didn’t hear anything until I got up to do the morning show, ‘Today.’ And television is a very sensitive [thing].” In the end, Cee Lo, is more focused on his own moment, when he got to share the stage with the Queen of Pop during the halftime finale, when the twosome brought some gospel to the show during “Like A Prayer.” “It was definitely that chaos moment, just the entire event; just the entire experience was the biggest moment for me, personally in my entire career,” he said. “So it all was equally wonderful for me.” What did you think of M.I.A.’s Super Bowl gesture?
