Unforgivable Flower Gaffe of the Day: At a Venice Film Festival press conference for Madonna’s universally panned feature film W.E. , someone had the audacity to hand her some hydrangeas, which, as everyone knows, she absolutely loathes. Material Girl’s second directorial effort finds few early supporters at the film fest. By Eric Ditzian Madonna attends the “W.E.” premiere during the 68th Venice Film Festival Photo: Getty Images The Venice Film Festival turned into something of a feeding frenzy on Thursday, as critics practically fell over one another in an effort to drum up the harshest disses and most damning, damaging turns-of-phrase about Madonna’s second directorial effort, “W.E.” Their cackles of laughter echoed across the pond the next day, as the Weinstein Company attempted some damage control and a handful of defenders staked out claims that the film had been unjustly dismissed. Those supporters pointed to the lush visual landscape Madonna had captured and the touching love story she’d brought to life. But the critics weren’t having any of it. They slammed the garbled narrative structure, cheesy dialogue and directorial trickery that seemed to serve no other purpose than Madonna’s look-at-me self-servitude. Read on for those critiques and more. The Story ” ‘W.E. is rather better than expected; it’s bold, confident and not without amusing moments. Still, it’s undeniably a strange concoction. Madonna (who also co-scripted with [Alek] Keshishian) has fashioned a split-level story of two couples: the Windsors, and the growing attraction between Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), a contemporary Manhattan woman, and Evgeni (Oscar Isaac), a handsome Russian working security at Sotheby’s. Wally, married to an eminent shrink who isn’t above slapping her around, desperately wants children. (He doesn’t.) Worse, she has inherited her mother’s and grandmother’s obsession with the Windsors (Andrea Riseborough, James d’Arcy) and doggedly researches their lives, seeking clues about how to live her own. In extreme moments, Mrs. Simpson actually appears to her.” — David Gritten, The Telegraph The Direction “What an extraordinarily silly, preening, fatally mishandled film this is. It may even surpass 2008’s ‘Filth and Wisdom,’ Madonna’s calamitous first outing as a filmmaker. Her direction is so all over the shop that it barely qualifies as direction at all. ‘W.E.’ gives us slo-mo and jump cuts and a crawling crane shot up a tree in Balmoral, but they are all just tricks without a purpose. For her big directorial flourish, Madonna has Wallis bound onstage to dance with a Masai tribesman while Pretty Vacant blares on the soundtrack. But why? What point is she making?” — Xan Brooks, The Guardian The Writing “The script is the first problem. Co-written with Alek Keshishian, it’s laden with clich

‘Yonkers’ MC talks post-Best New Artist victory to MTV News with Odd Future’s Jasper Dolphin playing interpreter. By Kelley L. Carter, with reporting by Rob Markman Tyler, the Creator backstage at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Not long after learning he had won the Moonman for Best New Artist at Sunday’s Video Music Awards , Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator seemed to have blown up too big to even do his own talking. Instead of delivering a straight-on post-victory interview with MTV News, he whispered answers about the win into his groupmate’s ear. After a question about whether he was at all disappointed to earn Best New Artist and not Video of the Year (it went to Katy Perry’s “Firework” ), OF’s Jasper Dolphin responded, “I just wanted one, I’m fine. “I like cheese,” Jasper added, as Tyler, the Creator whispered the responses into his ear. While accepting his Best New Artist award , the rapper told the crowd he was on the verge of tears. So, we asked him if it had been hard to hold them back. “It was really hard, but [the tears] came out when I fell offstage into Kanye’s arms,” he said, speaking again through Jasper Dolphin. After nabbing the Best New Artist statue from presenters Taylor Lautner and Selena Gomez earlier Sunday night, Tyler delivered a mostly bleeped-out speech. “Yo, I’m excited as f— right now, yo,” he said. “I wanted this sh– since I was 9. I’m about to cry. This is for my little brother Earl. He’s not here right now. I really can’t believe I’m here right now. I didn’t write a thank you speech. I don’t know. F—. To all the kids watching, you can do this sh–. Thank you.” The 20-year-old bested fellow Best New Artist nominees Big Sean (“My Last,” featuring Chris Brown), Foster the People (“Pumped Up Kicks”), Kreayshawn (“Gucci Gucci”) and Wiz Khalifa (“Black and Yellow”). Lady Gaga’s male alter ego even got fresh with Brit after her VMA tribute. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by James Montgomery Britney Spears and Lady Gaga as Jo Calderone backstage at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Getty Images On Sunday night at the 2011 Video Music Awards , Lady Gaga ‘s alter ego Jo Calderone met the princess of pop herself, Britney Spears . Gaga, in full drag as Calderone , and Spears had a bit of a VMA romance, sharing kind words — and even swapping spit. “It was interesting, her character,” Spears later told MTV News about the encounter, even dishing how the kiss between the two took place. “We got onstage and we felt it out.” Spears, of course, has already kissed a famous pop star on the VMA stage, when she and Madonna locked lips back in 2003. And it’s that kind of free spirit that Calderone noted in his speech about the singer. “She taught us all how to be fearless, and the industry wouldn’t be the same without her,” Calderone said when he not only kicked off the tribute to the star, but also later presented her with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. After a troupe of dancers, who performed dance routines to everything from ” … Baby One More Time” and “Crazy” to “Toxic” and “Do Somethin’,” left the stage, Calderone and Spears came face to face, and lips to lips. Although Spears seemed fine with the initial kiss, when he tried to make a few more advances, Spears rebuffed him with a big smile on her face. He took it like a gentleman, adding, “I don’t want Gaga to get pissed.” So was Gaga completely Calderone the whole time? “She’s in full character,” Spears later added. “Yes, definitely.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards have wrapped, but the real action is just getting started! If it feels like Andrea Riseborough has been on the cusp of a breakout for the last calendar year, that’s probably because she has. Last year at the Toronto International Film Festival, Riseborough appeared in three films — Never Let Me Go , Made In Dagenham and Brighton Rock ( out in limited release now ) — and this year she’ll show up in Toronto, again, with the Madonna-directed W.E. ; the life of a budding breakout actress never seems to slow down.
Yes, I already toasted Madonna’s birthday yesterday in that hilarious ‘Verbal Vogueing’ clip you watched over and over again (RIGHT?), but it’s time to make The Mother of Reinvention’s 53rd anniversaire official with the Movieline treatment. Now, as a functioning human being, I understand that Madonna isn’t the best actress of our generation, but I contend that she’s had some under-heralded moments in film. Do you have a favorite underrated Madonna moment on the big screen?
The couple, who started dating last year after Zaibat performed at the launch of Madonna#39;s clothing line at Macy#39;s, vacationed in Paris earlier this summer. Madonna got into the groove with her 24-year-old boyfriend, Brahim Zaibat, while celebrating her 53rd birthday in the Hamptons over the weekend. The pop priestess locked lips with Zaibat, a French break-dancer, on a beach, while her two youngest children, David and Mercy, both 5, played in the sand nearby.
The star has also received acclaim as a role model for businesswomen in the music industry and for her wide-ranging work with charitable endeavors. Madonna Louise Ciccone, better known by just her first name, turns 53 years young today. Happy birthday to the seemingly ageless Queen of Pop! Over her three-decade career, Madonna has sold more than 300 million records is recognized as the top-selling female recording artist of all time. Here#39;s wishing her a happy 53rd birthday today!
Madonna’s directorial feature W.E. seems like a statelier version of Julie and Julia : A woman name Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) living in 1998 New York is enamored by the decades-old romance of Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) and Prince Edward (James D’A rcy). New stills from the film — which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival before heading to Toronto — owe less to, say, The King’s Speech and more to movies in Madonna’s own oeuvre.
