Justin Bieber’s ‘Never Say Never’ Is Third-Highest-Grossing Documentary Of All Time

Insiders say film could get nominated in documentary category at next year’s Oscars. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber in “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” Photo: Paramount Pictures The kid is hot. First, Justin Bieber became the first person since, well, himself to land two albums in the top five on the Billboard 200, and now his 3-D movie, “Never Say Never,” has vaulted into the #3 position on the list of top-grossing documentaries of all time. According to Box Office Mojo , “Never” has grossed $64,162,036 to date, putting it on track to possibly overtake the #2 doc of all time, “March of the Penguins,” which grossed more than $77 million. It’s unlikely to knock off the top documentary of all time, Michael Moore’s 2004 flick “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which rolled up $119 million, but with the “Never” director’s cut re-release last weekend (which brought in another $9 million), Bieber is positioned to conquer yet another medium. In his run to the top, Bieber has leaped over such lauded and popular docs as “Super Size Me,” Madonna’s “Truth or Dare,” Moore’s “Bowling for Columbine,” former Vice President Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” and the nature flick “Earth.” It also took the crown for the biggest opening weekend of any documentary , with a $29.5 million first weekend, squeezing past the $23 million open of “Fahrenheit.” Hollywood may end up catching Bieber Fever as well, with The Hollywood Reporter asking in a recent article whether “Never” could land the 17-year-old phenom a spot at the Oscars next year. A source told the trade magazine that “Never” had serious buzz at some post-Oscar parties thanks to its healthy grosses, which have impressed some Academy members. “You’d be surprised at the caliber of people who came up to Justin at the Vanity Fair party at the Sunset Tower, most of whom had seen the movie and loved it,” said an unnamed insider. “There was even talk of putting it up for an Oscar next year in the documentary category. People appreciate that it’s not just a kids’ movie.” The article mentioned that Bieber was one of the brightest stars at the Fair party, chatting up Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger and working the room like a pro. Can Christina Aguilera Regain Her Pop-Diva Crown?

Singer’s arrest tops year of troubles for Grammy winner. By Gil Kaufman Christina Aguilera Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images The pattern has, unfortunately, become fairly predictable at this point. A young star experiences stratospheric early success, lives a high-flying lifestyle and engages in over-the-top rebellious behavior and then begins to spin out of control after experiencing some personal and professional disappointments. The latest victim is former Grammy winner Christina Aguilera, whose annus horribilis reached its peak on Tuesday morning when she and her boyfriend both ended up behind bars . A year ago, Aguilera was on the cusp of a return to the spotlight after nearly three years away, during which she celebrated the birth of her son and recorded a new album, Bionic, which was tagged as her futuristic stab at retaking her pop-diva mantle. “There’s no other way of looking at the last year in her career other than to say it’s been trying,” said Keith Caulfield, the associate director of charts for Billboard magazine. “A lot of artists have tough times and go through all sorts of drama. Mariah Carey had her ‘TRL’ moment when ‘Glitter’ bombed and ‘Loverboy’ didn’t do what she wanted, but she came back with ‘We Belong Together,’ and was better than ever. Everyone was writing [Aguilera] off because that’s what we like to do — beat people while they’re down.” Although authorities have said she won’t be prosecuted, Aguilera was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of public intoxication on Tuesday morning after her boyfriend Matthew Rutler was pulled over on suspicion of driving under the influence. It was the latest hiccup in a year of difficulties for Aguilera, which began with the flop of her 2010 Bionic album, which has sold only 250,000 copies in the U.S. to date. That was followed by a hastily canceled U.S. tour , the failure of her big-screen debut in “Burlesque” and the announcement of her separation and pending divorce from husband Jordan Bratman. Those incidents were followed by her infamous flubbing of the lyrics at February’s Super Bowl and a stumble on the Grammys stage a week later, amid tabloid reports that her partying had gotten out of hand. Billboard ‘s Caulfield said he didn’t think Aguilera’s troubles are comparable to the very public difficulties suffered by Britney Spears several years ago or even Lindsay Lohan’s string of trips to jail and rehab, but that the pileup of Christina’s career and personal setbacks may have been amplified by the speed at which information and photos are disseminated on the Net these days. “Because of the coverage and the way things happen so quickly on the Internet, there’s no room for an, ‘Oh, I screwed up the lyrics or I stumbled.’ The problem is that everything she’s done over the past year was on a significant magnitude: her first starring role, the Super Bowl!” Had all the other previous incidents not happened, Caulfield said people may not have even noticed Aguilera’s stumble at the Grammys, a trip that Caulfield himself, who was at the show, said he didn’t even detect. “I can’t imagine how difficult it is to be Aguilera now: you have a kid, you’re separating from your husband, the album you waited four years to put out no one bought, it’s got to be tough.” PR expert and star of the Kim Kardashian-produced E! show “The Spin Crowd,” Jonathan Cheban said some of Aguilera’s problems may stem from her public image. “She has an incredible voice … she’s won Grammys … but it’s a different story than Britney,” Cheban said of the comparison to Spears and other stars like Lohan and Robert Downey Jr. who’ve had public spirals. “Christina’s definitely had a bad year, but there have been so many stories over the years about how unfriendly she is and how she doesn’t treat the people around her right, that I think people are more eager to take her down. Nobody is rooting for her because over the years she’s not been one to root for anyone else.” Before things went south for her, Cheban said it was hard to knock Aguilera off her pedestal because she was producing hit albums, winning Grammys and being asked to appear in movies such as Martin Scorsese’s 2008 Rolling Stones documentary, “Shine a Light.” But once things started to fall apart, he said, the knives came out. “There were no breaks, really,” he noted. “From the album tanking, the movie tanking, the divorce … she did a weird 360 in her life and went into hiding, and when you hide too much these days, people don’t like that. If you’re not out there, people will come after you and not in a positive way.” So, is it bad luck or bad karma? “Look at [Lady] Gaga,” Cheban continued. “If she’s trying to compete with [Gaga], then she should have praised her. Gaga is a woman of the people and everyone loves her and she’s fun and she’s out there and honest.” Caulfield said another problem is that while Aguilera was away, a new crop of younger, hotter models (Gaga, Katy Perry, Ke$ha) rose up to take her place and when Bionic failed, she purposely took herself out of the spotlight and seemed to amplify the career stall-out. “Pick a diva, they’ve all had their issues and failures — Madonna, Whitney Houston, Mariah,” he said. “We love a comeback story, though, and, of course, whatever her next thing is, hopefully it will work and people will love her again.” What do you think of Christina’s latest personal and professional woes? Britney Spears’ Manager Explains: Why Jonas Akerlund?

‘Jonas did ‘Ray of Light’ for Madonna, and that’s when [Britney] became a fan of his,’ Larry Rudolph tells MTV News of ‘Hold It Against Me’ director. By Ryan J. Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Video: A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet

From Greek mythology to mid-’90s Tool albums, Brit’s latest is full of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments. By James Montgomery Britney Spears fights herself in “Hold It Against Me” Photo: Jive On Thursday night, after weeks of teasing, Britney Spears finally revealed her video for “Hold It Against Me,” a whirling, swirling dance explosion that features plenty of sass, swagger and exactly one flowing white gown. It also features plenty of nods to pop music’s past — not to mention several blink-and-you’d-miss-it odes to film, TV and, of course, Greek mythology. As is the case with all massive videos, there’s a whole lot to keep track of, so, much like we did for equally big clips like Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” and My Chemical Romance’s “Na Na Na,” we’ve put “Hold It Against Me” through the wringer and compiled a pop-culture cheat sheet that’s alphabetized and cross-referenced for your convenience. Believe us, this took way longer than you could imagine, but it was worth it. (Oh, and despite our best efforts, we’re sure there’s something we missed, which is why we need your help: Let us know what you spot in the comments below.) Photos of the references in Britney’s “Hold It Against Me.” The Graeae : In Greek mythology, they were the three sisters who shared a single eye. In Britney’s video, they’re hoodie-wearing dudes with serious dance moves (and no eyes at all). Same thing, really. Iamamiwhoami : Icky, sticky viral-video enigma whose early clips featured plenty of lying around in the fetal position (and amniotic fluids). In “HIAM,” Britney, covered in similarly sticky liquid, curls up on the floor, striking a pose that would make Iamami proud. Kanye West, “Runaway” : Over-the-top 35-minute mini-movie/allegory starring West as a man who cares for a phoenix who has fallen to Earth. The meteor that crashes to Earth at the beginning of “HIAM” reminds us a lot of the phoenix’s fiery entrance in ‘Ye’s film . And, if you look hard enough, you can also see the song’s lyrics printed out in the top left corner of the shot. Madonna, “Bedtime Stories” : Ultra-artistic 1995 video, directed by Mark Romanek, that cost a reported $5 million to make. From the futuristic set and the special effects to Brit’s long, flowing gown and whirling dancers, it appears to be a direct influence on pretty much everything in “HIAM.” Though we’re willing to bet Brit didn’t spend nearly as much to make her version. Madonna, “Die Another Day” : Big-budget 2002 Madonna video from the equally big-budget James Bond film of the same name. It featured a memorable fight scene that pitted Madge against her alter ego (Mariah Carey did the same thing in her “Heartbreaker” video, BTW). In “HIAM,” Britney battles her alter ego in a (very fashionable) kung fu fight. The Matrix” : Wachowski brothers franchise that featured plenty of TV screens and a whole lot of marauding machinery, just like “HIAM.” Like Keanu said, “Whoa.” “Mortal Kombat” : Totally awesome (and violent) fighting game that featured, among its cast of characters, a blue-garbed assassin named Sub-Zero. In “HIAM,” Britney’s dancers don outfits similar to him, only they don’t shoot ice out of their hands. Unless that part’s in the director’s cut. Robyn, “Indestructible” : Sexy 2010 video from Sweden’s sexiest pop export, it featured Robyn writhing on a table while wearing a dress made entirely of clear plastic tubes (courtesy of Australian artist Lucy McRae), sort of like the ones Britney uses to spray colored liquid all over the “HIAM” set. “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” : Cult 1975 film adapted from a British play, its iconic poster featured a pair of bright-red lips, which seem to have also made their way into “HIAM.” Tool,

Britney Spears, Madonna Get In The Zone For 2003 ‘Me Against The Music’ Video

In anticipation of the premiere of Britney’s ‘Hold It Against Me’ video, we look back at her epic Madonna collabo. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears in “Me Against The Music” Photo: Jive Records In 2003, Britney Spears and Madonna decided to get their dance on together for Spears’ lead single off In The Zone . It was a collaboration that came together after the pair locked lips at the VMAs that same year. “I was in the middle of rehearsals for the VMAs and I played her the song, and she was like, ‘That’s your first single, right?’ ” Britney recalled. “I was like, ‘Yeah, hopefully.’ She was like, ‘I really like it.’ I was like, ‘Really?’ I was like, ‘Well, you wanna do it with me?’ She said, ‘Yeah.’ ” From there the idea was born and director Paul Hunter was tapped to try to capture the magic that had everyone buzzing after that now-famous kiss. “Madonna is an icon of an earlier generation, and then Britney of the newer generation … She was at her peak at that point,” Hunter told MTV News in 2009 about the video. “So it was a challenge to kind of bring both of the worlds together. I wanted it to be a bit of a cat-and-mouse sort of game, and a little bit of a foreplay between Britney and Madonna, and just sort of tease the audience.” When Spears spoke about the video while on-set, she explained that the intention was always to tease the audience. “I never actually see Madonna or touch her; I just feel her presence there,” she said. “[The song is] basically about just going to a club and letting yourself go and battling with whoever is around you and battling against the music as well. This is my first time doing a collaboration, and it’s with Miss Madonna herself.” Hunter admitted that it was all about keeping it sexy, without actually going there. “I try to play opposites, when you have Britney in dark and Madonna in white,” he said. “And then we see them kind of dance around the bed … and you think they’re gonna get on top of each other and do something crazy.” Don’t miss Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” video premiere Thursday, February 17, at 9:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com, followed by a live discussion on MTV.com at 11 p.m. about the new clip and what’s next for the pop star! Lady Gaga Professes Love For Madonna, Says Pop Icon Supports and Approves of "Born This Way"

Lady Gaga has been accused of ripping off Madonna with her newest single, “Born This Way.” On the Tonight Show last night, she didn’t really refute this. “You know, there is really no one that is a more adoring and loving Madonna fan than me,” she said. “I am the hugest fan personally and professionally.” It sounds like the feeling is reciprocal, too. Lady Gaga on The Tonight Show – Full Interview “I got an email from her people sending me their love and support on behalf of the single,” Gaga said. “And if the queen says it shall be, then it shall be.” Indeed. Good enough for Madonna, good enough for us! The Lady, who performed “Born This Way” live at the Grammys Sunday, went on to explain to Jay Leno what the song means to her – and everybody: “Essentially, with the visuals and the music and lyrics, it’s about being able to know that when you were born, you weren’t just born in that moment.” “You have your entire life to realize the person that you’re potentially going to become and however you choose to be is part of your destiny.” “In this moment, if you don’t feel entirely happy and secure in who you are… it’s never too late to harness your confidence, your inner superstars.” “The freedom in the song, the R&B, early ’90s vibe it has, it’s so full of love and spirit, and I think that it’s the spirit people are reacting to the most.” “I just want everyone to rejoice and celebrate and be unafraid to be happy. It doesn’t always have to be so dark. It doesn’t always have to be sexy.” “Sometimes it’s wonderful just to celebrate life and kind of go to church with it.” Gaga recently admitted on 60 minutes that she smokes a lot of pot when she writes music. Whatever kind she partakes in, we gotta find some of it. What do you think of “Born This Way”?
