You’ve seen Mr. Skin’s Top Ten Nude Scenes of 2012 , now EW.com has come out with its own rundown of the best and worst nudity of the year here . On the best side are such overlapping favorites as Olivia Munn in Magic Mike (2012), Helen Hunt in The Sessions (2012), and Kristin Stewart in On the Road (2012). The worst side, however, is a bit more mystifying. Game of Thrones is categorized as worst for: “Every other scene features naked prostitutes in the background making out with each other” . Alison Pill ’s topless tweet also makes the worst list, as well as Gina Gershon in the freaky country-fried flick Killer Joe (2012). While we agree with some of EW’s decisions- since sausage has no place in a skin smorgasbord- complaining about an actress getting naked is downright vexing. Worst Nude Scenes? No Such Thing! Celebrate all the babes who dared to bare this year from Olivia Munn to Gina Gershon , right here at MrSkin.com!
We at Movieline HQ were quick to cheer when Matthew McConaughey was named Best Supporting Actor by the New York Film Critics Circle for his work in Magic Mike and Bernie . After busying himself with forgettable rom-coms, the uncannily likable Texan has been on a tear, choosing unique projects in which he can strut his unique and undeniable talents. For the first time in his career, he is a genuine contender for an Oscar nomination. Movieline spoke to the man from the set of Dallas Buyers Club (the film that required him to drop tons of weight, so if the noms don’t come this year, he’ll be primed for 2014) about awards campaigns, how he’s perceived by fans, some of his classic lines and some possible film sequels. Normally we’d take laser focus in pruning our interviews, but with a guy as wonderfully laid back as McConaughey (who announces himself on the phone as “McConaughey”) you’d be a fool to ignore all the “man”s. Before we get to this terrific year, I should let you know I’m on the road and actually in your hometown of Austin and, no joke, in the shadow of a Moon Tower . Where it all began! Great shadow to be in, man. In Texas, that’s the place to be to hang out with your buds and get on a buzz. You gotta get rural on it. Okay, since we’re talking about Dazed and Confused , I mean, you’ve embraced that role — you named your company after a line from it, right? Yeah! On the football field when Randall “Pink” Floyd is deciding whether to play football or take a drug test and I say “you gotta just keep living.” That was my first film, and a week into it my father passed away. I was dealing with my Dad’s death, man. I was trying to figure out how to keep my spiritual relationship with my father. The line came to me. I didn’t make it up, but it really helped me deal with the grieving period. When we got into the scene it just came out. From that day on I kept “just keep living” and applied it — because you can apply it to anything! It’s a choice. Which choice has the most residuals? Which choice has the most delayed gratification? It’s the “just keep living” choice. It works down the road — it works for deciding what you are gonna’ have for a meal or how you are gonna’ treat yourself or how you’re gonna’ treat your woman. So I named my company that, and a record company and bumper stickers – I basically branded it on most things I have. It’s clear to me that you are too cool to give a shit about awards. [Laughs] I love it. You can’t measure art, it’s silly, but… Okay, I’m glad you are going with the “but,” because if there is such a thing as being too cool to give a shit about an award like [the New York Film Critics Circle] then I’m not nearly as cool as you think. It’s very exciting. Any artist wants to create something that translates, resonates and has a long shelf life. Something people will see, get entertainment from. We were talking about Dazed and Confused , the greatest compliment I get is when people come to me and say, “I know that guy, man! I know him!” He’s a character that lives on. People say, “I knew him, his name was Kelly Hernsberg!” So, with Dallas from Magic Mike and also Bernie and Killer Joe , these are characters that, if I can share them in a way that people recognize them and they stick — that is very exciting to me. Now, look: as far as awards for art goes, with a hundred yard dash, there’s a clear winner and there’s second and third. It’s a science. It’s not a science when you are judging art but we’d be remiss to say you can’t look at something and say this is more well done than that. I think we have the right, if you are equipped to do so and you are being honest, to judge things, and in that respect I am very honored about getting an award. So you are ready to dive in, then, and start shaking hands and going into campaign mode with the goal of an Oscar nomination for Magic Mike ? [whistles.] Well, this is brand new for me, I’ll tell ya that. I asked myself that question when this was proposed to me just a few weeks ago. My publicist said, look, you are getting some attention for Magic Mike and Warner Bros. is ready to roll a campaign. Do you want to support it, too? And I’m working right now and I think “jeez, how’m I gonna’ do that?” But this is one of those “j.k. living” questions. Engage or not engage? And I’m for engaging in some form of everything. Yes. I love the film. I love the character. I loved the process of making it. Yes. I’d love to go talk about it. I’d much rather talk about acting in the role rather than selling the movie, you know what I mean? The movie was already a hit, now you can celebrate it. Exactly. It’s a hell of a lot more fun than sitting at the junket and answering questions about the wardrobe or how it was to kiss so-and-so in a movie, right? The hard part is the compartmentalization. I’ve got the films going and I’ve got a family going, but I’m not afraid to engage. This movie I’m doing now is extreme, but we found a spot to talk. You and I were going to talk the other day, we couldn’t fit it in, so I’m talking to you now, but if we didn’t talk now, I wouldn’t be in the right space to talk after starting the day, so we worked on it and got a time. I can talk with you in the morning, then I can shut that door and get back to the role, you know? This is turning into a very meta conversation. I love that, man, meta dialogue. People say don’t talk to yourself, well bullshit. I talk to myself all the time. Just make sure you answer. There was some chatter about a Magic Mike sequel. Would you be on board if your character was fit in? You said it. If there’s integrity in the script for the character, then yes. I’d love to put those leathers on again. If it’s written well, absolutely. Have there been other films you’ve done you wish there was a sequel for? Dazed and Confused: Where Are They Now? . Rick [Linklater] and I have talked about it. It’s really fun to talk to Rick and think what Wooderson would be doing now. Nothing’s solidified, but it is fun to think about. I say he’s got a couple of kids and he’s a local DJ. The midnight to six DJ. With a couple of kids at home, probably twins. Why twins? I dunno. But he’s got twins and a wife and he’s THE SAME GUY. Rick is not afraid to do a sequel when no one expects it. He’s got the next Before Sunrise at Sundance this year. I know it. He snuck off and did it, man. One day I was talking to him and the next day I called him and he was gone. I don’t hear from him for three months he calls back, “what’s up?” I say, “hey, man, where’ve you been?” and he says he was in Greece shooting. That’s how Rick rolls. But listen, the Dazed and Confused characters are very sacred, it’s gotta’ be done right. You are aware that if you mention the name Matthew McConaughey to many people and the first thing out of their mouths will be “all right, all right, all right,” right? “All right, all right, all right.” You know the story about that, right? It’s classic. I go to the set for a wardrobe test, I’m not supposed to work that night. I wasn’t written in the script, but Rick wonders if Wooderson might be riding around trying to pick up chicks this night. So I get in the car — this is my first scene ever on film — and I’m nervous. So I’m saying to myself “who is my man? who is my man?” I had been listening to a live album by The Doors and between songs he would bark at the crowd “all right! all right! all right! all right!” Four times. So right before Rick calls action I’m thinking, “Who is my man? What am I about?” And I realize Wooderson is about weed, women, his car and music. Now I figure I’m high, I’m in my ’70s Chevelle, and I’m rockin’ out to Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold.” And there’s the woman I’m gonna go get. So I hear action, and I say “all right, all right, all right.” Basically — I got three out of four, and now I’m gonna get the fourth! And that was the first thing I ever said on film. The Sexiest Man Alive is looking to take an acting break. 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike star Channing Tatum is planning to put the acting gigs on hold next year in favor of working on his directing chops with production partner, Reid Carolin. “[Reid and I] have about three to four ideas that we love that are all in the hopper. By the end of next year, we’re going to shut things down and write the first thing that we’re going to direct,” Tatum told EW . “We’re going to be like, alright, no more acting parts for a minute, let’s take a few and really get caring about that section of our career.” Tatum and Carolin are in the midst of developing a Magic Mike sequel – and with a nearly $166 million worldwide gross from the first installment and a production budget only a fraction of that – then why not? They’re also developing a pic on 1970s daredevil, Evel Knievel. Still, Tatum won’t be absent from the big screen in 2013. He’s set for Steven Soderbergh’s Side Effects in addition to action pic White House Down along with Jamie Foxx and Maggie Gyllenhaal as well as drama Foxcatcher from Bennett Miller. “I love the steps that I’ve taken acting-wise. That has been a wild sort of exploration,” Tatum said. “But I don’t want to just keep putting [directing] off for these fun and incredible opportunities.” Tatum gave a shout-out to Soderbergh for showing him and Carolin the filmmaking craft. “I don’t think Reid and I would have the balls to try to make a movie without learning what we did from Soderbergh and [assistant director] Greg Jacobs,” Tatum said about the Magic Mike director. “It was like a crazy crash course Cliff Notes on directing and how to make movies, literally get them done. We had a Matrix -style download, like a plug in the back of the head and bloop! I know Kung Fu now.” People magazine named Tatum its 2012 Sexiest Man Alive last month. [ Source: EW Inside Movies ]

Folks like Steven Soderbergh know it can be a long, long road to retirement. But there are still (at least) two titles to come, including Side Effects . With this year’s box office lauded strip down Magic Mike as well as his other 2013 shoot Behind the Candelabra on the make, his segue out from the director’s chair may linger a year or two. There are promo obligations post-post production after all… And retirement is proving to be good business, anyway. After cashing in with $130 million for this year’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel , a second one is in the offing . Maybe after Soderbergh is finished with these, he can really embrace the retirement thing with a Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 3 ? Starring Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Jude Law (many of whom are Soderbergh-vets), Side Effects revolves around a young woman who relies on prescription drugs to deal with anxiety as her husband heads home from prison. As might be expected, there’s also more going on as the trailer suggests, with the pulse of anxiety hitting a crescendo. The film is due out February 8th. Thoughts, Movieliners? Should Soderbergh cancel his retirement plans?

Late last week, the box office prognosticators speculated whether The Dark Knight Rises would eek out a triumph over newcomer Total Recall . The pendulum would swing in either direction as the weekend approached, but in the end TDKR easily beat out Total by every measure. In fact, the film only really managed to measure-up to its original, but in 2012 dollars 1. The Dark Knight Rises Gross: $36,440,000 (Cume: $354,638,000) Screens: 4,242 (PSA: $8,590) Weeks: 3 (Change: – 41%) Speculation ran rampant in among box office watchers if The Dark Knight Rises would hold number one with the debut of Total Recall , but in the end Batman won and actually quite handily. TDKR took the top spot for the third weekend in a row. The feature dropped 162 screens compared to the previous weekend and its $8,590 per-screen average compares to $14,549 last weekend. Internationally, the pic has grossed well over $378 million. 2. Total Recall Gross: $26 million Screens: 3,601 (PSA: $7,220) Week 1 The original opened with just over $25.5 million when it debuted in 1990 in 2,060 theaters for a $12,395 average, so the re-make is in quite in the shadow of its original especially when factoring inflation. Abroad, Total Recall grossed $6.2 million in 12 markets, but will be heading to larger territories in the coming weeks. 3. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days Gross: $14.7 million Screens: 3,391 (PSA: $4,335) Week: 1 The pic also grossed an additional $2.77 million overseas, so within ear-shot of its $22 million production budget, but it did not measure up to last year’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules in its bow. The previous installment of the series grossed $23.75 million from 3,167 theaters for a $7,500 average back in March of 2011. It went on to gross nearly $52.7 million domestically 4. Ice Age: Continental Drift (3-D, Animation) Gross: $8.4 million (Cume: $131,862,859) Screens: 3,542 (PSA: $2,372) Week: 4 (Change: – 37%) The animated feature held decently one month out and should surpass the previous installment Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs , which grossed just under $200 million domestically. 5. The Watch Gross: $6.35 million (Cume: $25,363,203) Screens: 3,168 (PSA: $2,004) Weeks: 2 (Change: -50%) The pic struggled to connect with audiences with a drop of 50% despite no change in screen count. 6. Ted Gross: $5,478,660 (Cume: $203,413,895) Screens: 2,767 (PSA: $1,980) Weeks: 6 (Change: -25%) The stuffed bear continues to be a summer hit internationally as well. The comedy grossed $32 million at 2,380 locations in 20 territories for an international total coming in at $77.3 million. Domestically, the feature played 362 theaters compared to the previous weekend. 7. Step Up: Revolution (3-D) Gross: $5.3 million (Cume: $23,097,149) Screens: 2,606 (PSA: $2,034) Weeks: 2 (Change: – 55%) The feature had a pretty steep drop, though it did have a slight up-tick in showings compared to its opening weekend. Still, the drop suggests the pic is not grabbing audience attention as it expands. 8. The Amazing Spider-Man Gross: $4.3 million (Cume $250.64 million) Screens: 2,425 (PSA: $1,773) Weeks: 5 (Change: -36%) One of the summer’s biggest hits, the feature is now totaling just under $678 million worldwide. 9. Brave (3-D, Animation) Gross: $2.89 million (Cume: $223,324,000) Screens: 2,110 (PSA: $1,370) Weeks: 7 (Change: -33%) The Disney animation has cumed $118 million for a global total coming in at $341.3 million. Brave has comfortably surpassed the summer’s other animated success, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted , which has cumed just over $210.8 million in 9 weeks of release. 10. Magic Mike Gross: $1.38 million (Cume: $110,894,000) Screens: 1,202 (PSA: $1,148) Weeks: 6 (Change: – 47%) A success by any measure, the feature has likely come close to its domestic peak. The Steven Soderbergh directed film added 349 theaters in its sixth weekend out. Still its $1,148 average compares to $1,626 last week. And overall, certainly a stripping success for a $7 million budget.
Juno Temple (recently, Selina Kyle’s special friend in The Dark Knight Rises ) and Riley Keough (the granddaughter of Elvis seen briefly in Magic Mike ) star in Bradley Rust Gray’s Jack and Diane , a dark romance about two young ladies experiencing puppy love and the peculiar transformations that ensue. After the jump watch the first official trailer, which sets up their sweet sapphic connection but shies away from major spoilers. Jack and Diane burst onto the collective radar a while back with its horror-tinged setup (which I won’t ruin here) and once was set to star Juno BFFs Ellen Page and Olivia Thirlby in the title roles. As the first trailer highlights, Temple and Keough promise to bring a different dynamic to the tale — theirs is a naive, elemental chemistry, glimpsed in snatches, made ominous by animated sequences by the Brothers Quay. Cara Seymour and Kylie Minogue also co-star. Who can resist? Still, Jack and Diane floundered with critics upon its Tribeca Film Festival debut . But between Magic Mike , TDKR , and this week’s Killer Joe (which features Temple as the object of Joe’s affections), there’s no better time for Magnolia to capitalize on their stars’ rising cache. Verdict: Looks cute. But will it come together? Jack and Diane debuts on VOD on September 28 and is in theaters November 2.
