‘Magic Mike’ Stars Avoided ‘Iconic’ Stripper Outfits

‘When I actually danced, I did a Boy Scout outfit, and I thought it was the lamest thing ever,’ Channing Tatum tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Channing Tatum in “Magic Mike” Photo: If you’re not yet familiar with the year’s sexiest movie about male strippers, “Magic Mike,” then you’ve been deliberately avoiding the very fun subject. The R-rated film is loosely based on star Channing Tatum’s stripper past, directed by Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh, and features a very attractive ensemble cast. When MTV News caught up with Tatum and co-star Matthew McConaughey recently, we asked them to reveal which parts of their characters’ stripper attire proved most cumbersome during filming. “You were always in comfy, comfy stuff,” McConaughey pointed out about Tatum’s wardrobe. “Yeah, but that was sort of my own thing when I actually did it, because when I actually danced, I did a Boy Scout outfit, and I thought it was the lamest thing ever,” Tatum recalled. “And I did a clown thing. But my favorite thing I did [was a dance to an] Usher [song] , and I was just like, ‘No I’m going to pick the song that I like. I’m going to dress like the song should be dressed for,’ and that was it. I wanted to be normal; I didn’t want to do the kinda iconic stripper things.” “It’s a great wardrobe, isn’t it?” McConaughey continued, speaking of the cast’s various glittery outfits, thongs and tight booty shorts. “I loved getting the wardrobe together.” “The tassels were my favorite,” Tatum said of a specific detail on one of McConaughey’s thongs. “The tassels, yes a lot of talk, but a lot of work, a lot of hours went into the tassels on Dallas’ thong,” he recalled with a smile. “The length of the tassel, the thickness of the tassel, what does it reveal, what does it not.” “It had to be perfect,” Tatum said. All this happy talk about their tiny outfits prompted us to ask whether they kept any of the creative costumes. “I kept all of my stuff,” McConaughey said without missing a beat. “All of it,” Tatum agreed. “Come on, we’ve got wives now.” Check out everything we’ve got on ” Magic Mike. ” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Magic Mike Closes LA Film Fest With A Bang, And Beefcake

The promise of seeing Channing Tatum , Matthew McConaughey, and their manscaped compatriots bare (almost) it all in Steven Soderbergh ’s Magic Mike has quickened the collective pulse of the film’s target audience in the weeks leading up to Friday’s release. But while ladies and many gents will get a titillating thrill from the scantily-clad dance numbers and cheesy-fantasy bumps ‘n’ grinds (and there are so, so many), what elevates the film beyond its “ Showgirls -with-men” concept is the depth and naturalness in the story of 30-year-old star performer Mike (Tatum) and his pursuit of the American dream as one of the “Cock-rocking Kings of Tampa.” Based loosely on Tatum’s eight-month experience as a male stripper in his teens — a time during which Tatum admits to witnessing a much more dark and depressing version of events than what producing partner/writer Reid Carolin transposes to the script — Magic Mike flies on Tatum’s charismatic turn as the male stripper at the center of this world filled with g-strings and crumpled dollar bills, the most ubiquitous, and sweat-drenched, tokens of power in this strange little world. An ambitious would-be entrepreneur who diligently saves the cash he earns working nights at McConaughey’s all-male dance revue, Tatum’s Mike dreams of starting his own custom furniture business but bad credit and a crap economy — and, more problematically, his hedonistic lifestyle — keep him from realizing his ideal life. When he meets an eager-but-directionless college dropout ( Alex Pettyfer ) and takes him under his wing, Mike sees a chance to mentor the kid. But the more that success comes at the club, the more Mike sees his real goals slipping further out of reach. Closing the LA Film Fest on a star-studded note — and with plenty of testosterone on the red carpet — Magic Mike should ride into release on Friday with healthy word of mouth, if only judging by the enthusiasm level in the ladies room following a press screening last week. Granted, a number of men seemed to have been left lukewarm by the sight of Tatum & Co. in various states of undress in the film: Cos-playing as firemen, Marines, doctors, and the like, air-thrusting in the daintiest of thongs, dry-humping dozens of female club extras. But the ladies room? Positively abuzz. A few loudly complimented the costume design, which boasts more thongs than we’ve seen since Baywatch — and those whale tails weren’t sported by oiled-up actors like McConaughey, who, set legend has it, improvised a “tuck and roll” move following a wardrobe malfunction (an overzealous extra was the culprit ) that seems to have made it into the film, a glimmer of panicked realism flickering across his face. There’s deeper prodding to be done about the men who protest too much about male nudity in Magic Mike , joyous moments of man-butts and chests, mostly, shot with plenty of humor. And there’s no real tit for tat, so to speak, with the few instances of female topless nudity seen in the film; lady boobs don’t really equal dude butts on the nudity continuum, but that’s how it is. Likewise, female-performer strip clubs and their male-performer counterparts are inherently different to boot, a fact that Soderbergh, Tatum, and Carolin rightly recognize — it’s generally dimly-lit sexual voyeurism vs. bright and cheesy fantasy spectatorship. But boy, does Soderbergh get that gloriously cheesy vibe. One could simply call it abs olutely s pec tacular on account of the man meat, which certainly delivers on raunchy, knowing fun. But it’s the deeper themes, captured in an observational style, that really make Magic Mike work as more than just a cheap thrill. It may be a stripper movie, but it’s also about economic self-determination and the struggle between art vs. commerce — and that goes as much for Soderbergh and Tatum as it does for the characters grasping for dollars, and their creative destinies, on-screen. ‘Magic Mike’ Cast Had No Problem Getting Naked

‘It was hilarious that none of them really balked,’ Channing Tatum tells MTV News during Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week. By Amy Wilkinson, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey Photo: MTV News Struggling actors are no strangers to the odd job — be it waiting tables, walking dogs or washing cars. Few, however, would admit to taking their clothes off for cash, and even fewer would later document their sordid side gig in a feature film helmed by an Oscar-winning director. But few actors are Channing Tatum . As part of our Sneak Peek Week leading up to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, Tatum, along with ” Magic Mike ” co-star Matthew McConaughey and producer/screenwriter Reid Carolin, took to the Universal CityWalk stage in L.A. to debut an exclusive clip and chat about their stripper flick, out June 29. And while Tatum doesn’t shy away from talking about his past, it took a little convincing from director Steven Soderbergh to convince the actor his story was big-screen-worthy. “I was having a beer with Soderbergh — we were doing a movie together — and I told him about [my past stripping]. I’d been doing it for eight months of my life when I was, like, 18 or 19, and he said, ‘We gotta make a movie out of that.’ And I was like, ‘Why? Why do we need to do that?’ And he said, ‘I’ve never seen that world on film before.’ And then we really started talking about that, and we thought it would be really hilarious but still grounded in reality.” So the two set out to bring “Magic Mike” to life — without studio funding. “We put money into it and did it ourselves,” Tatum explained. “I don’t know if people realize it, but it was an independent movie.” An independent movie, albeit with an impressive cast including Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer and Matthew McConaughey, who said he simply couldn’t turn down an offer from Soderbergh to play groovy club owner Dallas. “He pitched me the story, and 10 minutes into it, I was on my knees in my house laughing,” McConaughey recalled. “And I said, ‘Tell me, any words of advice?’ And he said, ‘This guy, Dallas, he’s connected to the UFOs in space.’ And then I said, ‘Anything else?’ And he said, ‘You really can’t go wrong.’ And I said, ‘I’m in.’ ” And that’s when the real work began. Tatum took McConaughey to a male revue in New Orleans so he could get a glimpse into that world. “He loved it,” Tatum recalled with a grin. In fact, according to Tatum, none of the men seemed too worried about dropping trou. “The first day of rehearsals, I looked at the guys and we went through our stuff, and I was like, ‘All right. It’s time to get naked, boys.’ And it was hilarious that none of them really balked.” And neither did the female extras on set, who couldn’t seem to calm their excitement during McConaughey’s solo performance, in particular. “We could not get the women to sit down in the front row,” recalled Tatum with a laugh. “They just ran at the stage.” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! Kristen Stewart Quits Smoking, Learns French

‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ star says she learned to speak French during shooting for ‘On the Road’ in our exclusive Sneak Peek Week chat. By John Mitchell, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News Kristen Stewart helped MTV News kick off our Sneak Peek Week in style when she and “Snow White and the Huntsman” co-star Sam Claflin joined our own Josh Horowitz for a fun-filled chat Tuesday night, during which she revealed that not only is she learning French, she’s also recently given up a very bad habit. The “Twilight” starlet decided to learn the foreign language while filming the much-anticipated adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s beat generation classic “On the Road,” which just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. “On ‘On the Road,’ everyone spoke French. We were primarily in Montreal,” Stewart told MTV News. “I spent so much time … and I was just, like, feeling so pathetic. Not only is it a very dope language, it’s more like I really want to be able to talk to a few people so badly.” And while her coolness has never been in question, the busy actress apparently felt a little insecure about her cred while trekking around Paris unable to speak the language. “When I’m in Paris, I feel like I could be so much [cooler]. I’m like, ‘Wow, I could be so cool.’ So that’s the main inspiration,” she said. When chastised about one Parisian habit she adopted a while back, smoking cigarettes, Stewart was quick to reveal that she has apparently given it up — though she didn’t want to talk too much about her health-conscious move for fear of jinxing herself. “You can’t acknowledge it or else suddenly … you can’t think about it,” the slightly rattled actress confessed amid a loud round of applause for her achievement. Stewart will take the stage with her “Huntsman” co-stars Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth as presenters at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday. “Huntsman,” which hits theaters Friday, kicked off our MTV Sneak Peek Week, which will also include exclusive peeks at some of the summer’s hottest films, from “That’s My Boy” (Wednesday) and “Magic Mike” (Thursday) to “Rock of Ages” (Friday), as well as nightly chats with their casts live from the 5 Towers on Universal CityWalk. Tune in to MTV at 11 p.m. ET each night as the casts introduce an exclusive clip from their movies, and join us at MTV.com for a live Q&A with the actors. You can also join the conversation yourself on Twitter using the hashtag #MTVSneak. Stewart is also, once again, a contender for the golden popcorn for Best Kiss for her smooch with Robert Pattinson in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” The Russell Brand-hosted show is set to feature performances by Fun., Wiz Khalifa, the Black Keys and house DJ Martin Solveig. Olivia Munn A ‘Voyeur’ On The ‘Magic Mike’ Set

Munn especially loved co-star Matt Bomer’s bum: ‘I just want to make wishes on it, it’s so beautiful.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino Olivia Munn Photo: MTV News There’s so much man meat in the “Magic Mike” trailer that it’s easy to forget that there are actual ladies in the June film. Sure, “Mike” stars Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer and Joe Manganiello — we know, you need a second to catch your breath — but the Steven Soderbergh-directed flick also boasts some talented ladies, including Olivia Munn. When MTV News caught up with the actress — who was being honored by Us Weekly as a “sexy tomboy” at the mag’s Hot Hollywood event — she opened up about being around all those guys and loving each and every minute of it. “I think on set, with all these guys, I’m not a sexy tomboy; I’m not a tomboy; I’m not anything,” she said. “I’m just a voyeur, watching them.” She then recalled hitting the set long before her call time just to gawk at the studs. “I’m on set when I’m not even working for, like, four hours, but I heard they’re dancing and they’re going to be naked, so I’m gonna be here early watching. So that’s what I am on set: more the voyeur watching.” As for all the smooth moves, she shared that the film’s star — Magic Mike himself, Channing Tatum — might be the smoothest. “He’s truly, truly talented, and he’s so fun to watch, and it’s so sexy as well,” she said. “And then the person I was really impressed with was Matt Bomer, ’cause I didn’t know he could dance. He’s got this juicy butt. Like, I just want to make wishes on it, it’s so beautiful.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Magic Mike.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
