Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard: A History With The Seattle Mariners

From childhood fandom to playing at Monday’s home opener, Gibbard shares his Mariners memories. By James Montgomery Ben Gibbard Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images The tale of Death Cab for Cutie performing at the Seattle Mariners’ home opener on Monday is actually an act in three parts, starring avowed baseball nut (and DCFC frontman) Ben Gibbard. It’s a story of soaring highs and crushing lows, plus amazing feats of skill. It’s such an epic adventure that we figured it would be best if Gibbard told it himself. Here’s the first act, in which our intrepid hero embarrasses himself at a Mariners/ White Sox game in September 2008. They asked me to throw out the first pitch, and, of course, I said yes. I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I have a pretty good arm. I’m not like a 90-mph fastball kind of guy, but I can hit 70 on a radar gun. I hit 70 one time on a radar gun at one of those pitch-and-throw kind of things. … I have a pretty good arm for somebody who’s not a baseball player … so before the game, I’m down in the catacombs of Safeco Field, and they got a ball girl out there, and I’m throwing curves, I’m throwing sh–ty knucklers, I’m throwing from the full 60-feet-6 inches. … I’m just smoking it in there. So I was like, “OK, I’m not going to try and throw it as hard as I can, but I don’t want to throw one of those lollipop first pitches.” So I go out there, and I’m on a mound, and there’s like 30,000 people out there, and also, I hadn’t thrown in, like, 10 minutes. … I’m thinking, “Maybe I’ll throw a four-seamer, just throw it right in there.” And then I start second-guessing my grips. I’m thinking, “Maybe I’ll throw a two-seamer instead.” And I threw to [Mariners pitcher] Ryan Rowland-Smith, and I threw it and it was low and outside. It just went to the backstop. … I felt like such a dumbass. So after, Ryan Rowland-Smith is signing the ball for me, and he’s like, “Throwing the heat, huh?” And I was so embarrassed. And now, the second act, which also took place in 2008 and saw Gibbard redeem himself with a rather amazing act of dexterity: In the spring of 2008, I went to a Mariners game with my mom. And a foul ball comes into the stands, and I catch it with my hat. I have the video to prove it. I’m not making this up. … The ball comes into the crowd … and I’m like, “Uh-oh, look out,” and I caught it with my hat. It was amazing. You think of that moment happening every time you go to a game, ever since you were a little kid. So I had our management contact the Mariners, so they could get me the footage, because I know no one would believe me. I have it on my phone to show people, because they will never believe me. All of that led to up to last Monday, when Gibbard once again set foot on his field of dreams, to perform a medley of baseball-themed hits — John Fogerty’s “Centerfield” and a somber version of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” — joined by his Death Cab mates. We’re not going to lie to you, there was a lot riding on the performance — and Gibbard was understandably nervous. I mean, [the Mariners] had been floating this idea of us performing since last year, and I always said I would do it. I’ve loved the team since I was a little kid. I got [former Mariners slugger] Alvin Davis’ autograph when I was, like, 9, when he was on the ferry. This was ingrained in who I am. So, yeah, I was kind of nervous. But we went out there and played, and it was great, man. It was sort of like all the things I like the most, aligning into one. Since it was opening day, it was a big production. There were fireworks, and they had set up a little stage behind home plate. We played, and it was pretty amazing. I would definitely do it again. So there you go. Ultimate redemption. Dreams coming true. Who said baseball isn’t a magical game? Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: ‘Kick-Ass’ Related Artists Death Cab For Cutie

Coheed And Cambria Credit ‘Devoted’ Fans For MTV Musical March Madness Win

‘They definitely won us this thing,’ frontman Claudio Sanchez tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Coheed and Cambria Photo: Sony/Getty Images/MTV News When Coheed and Cambria frontman Claudio Sanchez heard his band had won MTV’s Musical March Madness , he reacted in a way most men would when they’ve just won a (fairly) major tournament of champions: He finished cleaning the algae off his deck. “I was cleaning the deck of our house, getting the algae off of it, because we’re about to leave for tour, and my wife came outside, laughing, and said, ‘Oh my God, you guys won, ‘ ” Sanchez told MTV News on Wednesday (April 7). “That was about it. We didn’t really have champagne or anything, but after I’m finished with this interview, I might crack a beer open and sit down to a game of ‘God of War 3.’ ” Yes, it was a pretty raucous celebration at the Sanchez household. But all kidding aside, Sanchez said he and his bandmates were legitimately honored to win MTV’s inaugural tournament — especially because it was their rabid fanbase that led them to victory in the first place. “Well, I don’t know what the fanbases are for the other bands, but I know our fanbase is beyond devoted. They let us do the things we do, and they definitely won us this thing,” Sanchez laughed. “I can’t say enough about them. … I mean, at first, I was only kind of following [the tournament] a little bit. My wife told me about it, and I gave it a glance. And I know some of the monitors on Cobalt and Calcium [a Coheed fan site], and they would send me a text message telling me who we were up against. For me, and for all of us, it was mostly about the fans and their dedication to our band.” Sanchez said he would even vote in some of Coheed’s early round matchups (“Oh, I voted for us, of course”), but he never really believed his band had a chance of winning. All that changed when C&C knocked off presumptive favorites Phish in the Sweet 16 . Then they disposed of Alice in Chains in the Elite Eight and headed for a Final Four showdown with Tokio Hotel. Suddenly, everyone in the Coheed camp started paying attention. “When we beat Phish, that’s when I started to notice. I was like, ‘Wow, this is, like, kind of serious.’ And then, I wasn’t really familiar with Tokio Hotel, but our management was like, ‘They’re a big band worldwide,’ ” Sanchez said. “So then I was like, ‘It’s been a good run for us, but maybe this is where we lose out.’ Only, it wasn’t.” And after beating Tokio in the Final Four , they rolled over My Chem in the title game . And at that point, Coheed’s dream run through the tournament was complete: They were the unlikeliest of champions. And now that they’ve won, Sanchez is itching to swing by MTV News’ HQ and pick up the trophy . He hasn’t quite figured out what he’ll do with it just yet, but he’s kicking around a few ideas. “This was a battle for the fans, so I’m trying to figure out a way to share it with them. It was their victory,” he said. “I’m trying to contact the fellow that runs Cobalt and Calcium, because I might present it to him. Or maybe we’ll take it out on tour and let all the fans see it and take pictures with it. Who knows?” What did you think of Coheed’s victory? Did you vote to make them champs? ‘Iamamiwhoami’: Is Swedish Singer Jonna Lee Behind Viral Campaign?

Her management denies involvement, but some eagle-eyed fans beg to differ. By James Montgomery Unknown woman from Iamamiwhoami video Photo: iamamiwhoami Back in January, amid much speculation to the contrary, a rep for Christina Aguilera denied that her client had anything to do with the ongoing “Iamamiwhoami” viral campaign , telling MTV News: “It’s 100 percent not her … not sure why people think it is.” And yet, despite that denial (and a second one issued just last week), Aguilera’s name kept being mentioned in connection with the maddeningly complex campaign , even as mysterious packages were sent to MTV News and more and more Iamami videos were released. But on Sunday, with the debut of the seventh Iamami clip , all that speculation may finally be over. We might finally know the person responsible for the engrossing (and pretty gross) viral campaign: Jonna Lee , a singer/songwriter from Sweden. In a lengthy post on celebrity-obsessed LiveJournal community Oh No They Didn’t , a pair of keen-eyed readers noticed the similarities between Lee and the muck-smeared heroine of the Iamami video series — the nose, the teeth, the eyes — similarities no amount of masking tape (which our heroine covered herself in for the latest vid) could hide. Also strangely similar is an electric organ seen in the new video, which also makes an appearance in a “making of” clip for Lee’s latest album, and Lee’s backing musicians, who look very much like the guys featured in the newest Iamami video. And given all those similarities, it seemed like the mystery was finally solved. Only, perhaps it isn’t. Because Lee’s music only bears a passing resemblance to the ethereal, downright eerie electronic stuff being unveiled in the viral videos (her latest single, “Something So Quiet,” is perhaps the closest match). And, according to her management, she has nothing to do with Iamami. “If Jonna is involved in this, we have no knowledge of such,” Jamie Jaffe, who works for Lee’s North American management team, Philadelphonic, told MTV News in an e-mail Monday (March 15). “The only upcoming projects we are aware of are the development of her third album and her upcoming SXSW performances.” Then again, from the sound of things, Lee is working on a new album, and MTV News’ e-mails to her Swedish label, Razzia, seeking comment were not returned. So there’s still nothing official to report. But for the first time since the Iamami campaign began in December, we might actually be getting close to figuring this whole thing out. Do you think the Iamamiwhoami mystery has been solved? Let us know your theories below! Related Artists Jonna Lee

D’Angelo Issues Statement On Arrest

Singer ‘has pled not guilty — and is contesting the allegations made against him,’ statement reads, regarding arrest for soliciting a prostitute. By MTV News staff D’Angelo Photo: MTV A rep for R&B singer D’Angelo (real name: Michael Archer), who was arrested and charged with soliciting a prostitute Saturday in New York, issued a statement about the incident Monday (March 8). “We know there is a lot of speculation in regard to the arrest of D’Angelo in New York City this past weekend,” the statement, from Lindsay Guion of D’Angelo Management, reads. “We would like his fans and the public at large to know that D’Angelo has pled not guilty — and is contesting the allegations made against him. Also know that he is in good health and extremely excited about his forthcoming new album. “D’Angelo would like to personally thank all of his fans for the outpouring of concern, and appreciates if all would allow the American justice system to resolve the matter before jumping to any conclusions,” the statement concludes. While a police spokesperson declined to provide further details on the incident when contacted by MTV News, according to The New York Post, the singer allegedly offered an undercover policewoman $40 for oral sex. D’Angelo was driving alone in his Range Rover at Greenwich and Horatio streets at about 2:30 a.m. when he saw a woman he believed to be a prostitute, unnamed sources told the Post. He was arrested and charged with solicitation after asking the woman for sex, according to the sources, who added that the singer had $12,000 in his car. Powered by his 1995 debut LP, Brown Sugar, D’Angelo was one of the leading lights of R&B during the 1990s, but he has released little music since his 2000 sophomore effort, Voodoo, and has been plagued by legal difficulties in the years since. No Change From Amy Winehouse

Not surprisingly, Amy Winehouse caused a bit of a stir while playing bartender at The Dublin Castle in London. A source said the singer served a customer his drink when he said: “At least she’s quicker at pulling pints than she is at writing songs.” Ouch! Winehouse refused to give the man his change…but we think it’s well deserved. The source also added:

Tony Yayo Hopes Eminem Will Join G-Unit’s U.S. Tour

‘It would be an honor if Em came out,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Tony Yayo Photo: Rahman Dukes/MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive In a couple of weeks, the G-Unit will be heading overseas for an international tour. Come June, the 50 Cent-captained team is scheduled to do something they haven’t done in quite some time: tour the United States. Although no dates or other acts have been announced for the bill, Tony Yayo is hoping at least Slim Shady will be on the road with them. “I’m not sure if Eminem is gonna be a part of the bill,” Yayo said recently in New York. “I know 50 wants to go out and do the U.S. tour. It would be an honor if Em came out. Shout to Em, the whole D12, everybody out there. “My best experience was [the] Anger Management [3 tour] with 50 and Eminem,” Yayo added. “They was killing each other on the tour, it was crazy. That was an ill tour. Em comes out, Fif comes out, D12, Proof was still alive — rest in peace to Proof . That’s one of the best hype men ever.” While Yayo was fantasizing out loud, he threw another name in the mix. “You know what? I would love to see Eminem, Dre and 50 do a big tour, so I could make millions of dollars,” he said. “I’ll be a stagehand and work in the back. I wouldn’t even care. I know I’ll make a million dollars lifting stuff. It’s an honor to be in their presence.” Obviously, it would be a huge undertaking to get all these guys on the road together, but Yayo and the fans can dream, can’t they? “With guys like Em and Dre and Fif, these guys got busy schedules,” the Queens native said. “Em is working on another album. Fif got about 15 movies; he’s working on another movie right now called ‘The Gun.’ Dre — come on, man, you see them Dr. Dre headphones selling like hot cakes everywhere you go. Those guys are busy guys. I feel blessed I could say that I know Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent. A lot of artists beg to do a song with Eminem, beg to do a song with 50 Cent, beg to do a song with Dre — I’ve experienced all those worlds.” Yayo said that his new album might be called Godfather of the Ghetto, and like Lloyd Banks’ next album, he wants to put it out this summer while the Unit are on tour. As for when 50 might release another LP, Tony said Fif isn’t focused on that right now. “50 is like a chameleon,” Yayo said. “What I seen from Fif, he’s in Will Smith mode; he’s shooting movie after movie. I know he’s definitely supporting me and Banks’ albums.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
