Arcade Fire Manager Responds To Steve Stoute’s Grammy Gripe

In an open letter of his own, Scott Rodger said he’s ‘proud of this band and what they’ve achieved.’ By James Montgomery Arcade Fire at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Getty Images Three days after music-industry vet Steve Stoute took out a full-page ad in The New York Times to blast the Grammys for being out of touch and vaguely evil, the manager of one of the bands he singled out responded, calling Stoute’s missive “a nice piece of self publicity.” In an e-mail to industry insider Bob Lefsetz, Scott Rodger, manager of Album of the Year winners the Arcade Fire , ripped Stoute for calling into question not only the validity of the band’s triumph but also their show-closing second performance. While the encore served as a de facto victory lap for the band, to Stoute it appeared to be proof positive that the Grammys were rigged and in need of a serious overhaul. “Arcade Fire had the final slot on the Grammys as the ratings are low at the end of the broadcast. It really is that simple,” Rodger wrote. “[There was] no big plot. We had no guarantee of air time, but it was simply to play out the end-credits of the show. … For the Grammys international broadcast, our main performance — along with that of Mumford & Sons and the Avett Brothers was completely cut from the show. Our end-title performance was bastardized because they cut our ads/sponsor messages completely. It was a bit of a farce.” Rodger also defended his band’s AOTY win — which Stoute took issue with in his Times open letter, and then again in a follow-up interview with The Hollywood Reporter, — because, well, they “deserved” it. “They made the best album. If the award was named ‘Album Sales of the Year,’ there would be no discussion,” Rodger wrote. “Eminem made a big-selling album, but it was far from being his best work. Katy Perry made a big pop record that simply didn’t have weight or credibility. Gaga’s … was a repackage of the main release. “Arcade Fire are now one of the biggest live acts in the world. It’s not all about record sales. It’s about making great records, and it’s about building a loyal fanbase,” he continued. “The band make great albums, they’re not a radio-driven singles band. … Things couldn’t be better.” Rodger closed his e-mail by taking a final shot at Stoute, saying that his protests were myopic — since Arcade Fire’s triumph was actually celebrated by big-selling artists — and that “he needs to tune in.” “Did he see Kanye’s tweets when we won and the praise he gave us?” he wrote. “I’m proud of this band and what they have achieved.” Related Videos Backstage Interviews From The Grammys Related Photos The 2011 Grammy Awards Show Related Artists Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire’s Album Of The Year Grammy Stuns Publicist

Merge Records’ Christina Rentz recalls her awards-show experience. By James Montgomery Arcade Fire at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Getty Images As the week draws to a close, many still can’t believe Arcade Fire managed to trump Eminem and Lady Gaga to win Album of the Year at Sunday’s Grammy Awards . And if you’re one of those who are still coming to grips with the upset, well, you’re not alone. Turns out, even the band’s publicist can’t believe it. In fact, on Grammy night, she had made peace with the fact that Arcade Fire seemed destined to go home empty-handed. In a new Billboard.biz story, Merge Records’ publicist Christina Rentz writes that, after watching her band go 0-for-2 during the Grammy’s pre-telecast awards (they lost both Best Alternative Album and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals to the Black Keys), she was resigned to the belief that the band would lose Album of the Year, too. In fact, she thought Eminem had it sewn up. “The production value was amazing, and it was incredibly exciting to be in the room. When Eminem came onstage and blew the roof off the place, I thought we were sunk for sure,” Rentz wrote. “But Jamie [Beck, Merge’s retail director] had been saying all weekend that we were going to win. She gave me very good reasons why, but I still didn’t think it was possible. As the night wore on, she persisted in her certainty, but it wasn’t until Eminem won Best Rap Album that I felt the familiar sweaty palms again.” When Album of the Year was announced, her feelings of nervousness quickly changed to jubilation — much to the consternation of those seated around her. “Barbra [Streisand] announced the Album of the Year: ‘And the Grammy goes to … The S-S-S-S-Suburbs ? We began screaming and jumping as our section emptied out with people muttering under their breath, ‘Who is Arcade Fire?’ ” she wrote. “The band accepted the award then immediately set up for their second song, with Win [Butler, the band’s lead vocalist and songwriter] putting his Grammy on top of an amp so he could pick up his guitar … my favorite moment of the evening! “They could not stop smiling and neither could we. Together, we had accomplished something pretty incredible and hopefully inspired musicians everywhere not to compromise when it is important.” And afterwards, having bested Eminem for the night’s biggest award, Rentz and Beck did what any newly minted Grammy winner would do: They partied hard. In their own way, of course. “We then phoned our label manager Stacy ‘Spott’ Philpott and said, ‘Holy crap, what do we do now?’ ” she wrote. “I still don’t fully know the answer, but at the time, it seemed like the best thing we could do was to get in our red Mustang, throw the top down, drive to the after-party to hug our friends in Arcade Fire, high-five their manager Scott Rodger and then get back to work on Tuesday, the release date for two new albums from Telekinesis and East River Pipe.” Were you surprised by Arcade Fire’s win? D12 Talks ABout Fucking Celeb Pussy of the Day

My friend over at HitHipHop.com invited me to a D12 show in Montreal and I decided to go cuz I have little else going on in my life… If you follow me on Twitter on Friday. I put the manager on blast cuz he was being a dick to everyone, pulling rockstar ego, telling people to talk to “Rico” if they need to coordinate something while the motherfucker was “Rico”…just blowing off anyone and everyone like he was trying to sabotage D12s almost non-existent careers…. I mean if I was in their position of irrelevance, I’d talk to everyone, from shitty sites like DrunkenStepfather to MTV, and the dudes in the band looked like they wanted to talk to me, but instead, he cockblocked…. The whole thing irritated me cuz I just assumed D12 died when their leader was killed and Eminem moved onto making Lipton Brisk commercials and Chrysler commercials instead of making their music. So I left….but I figured I’d post the interview my friends did get…cuz D12 is talking about how they fuck these starlets and I think it is funny…cuz black people are funny. Good job HHH

Justin Bieber Thanks ‘Supportive’ Fans At NYC ‘Never Say Never’ Premiere

‘Fans will be really excited to see that I’m just a regular 16-year-old having fun just living my dream,’ he tells MTV News of the 3-D movie. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber at the New York premiere of “Never Say Never” Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage At the star-filled New York screening for Justin Bieber’s long-awaited 3-D flick “Never Say Never,” the star, donning a purple bow tie, looked excited for his fans to finally get a chance to see the film they’ve been hearing all about for the past few months. “I’m feeling good,” he told MTV News on the red carpet, moments before he entered the theater to watch the film alongside his fans. “It’s great to be here. All my fans have been really supportive, so I’m really glad to be playing them my movie.” The film is part concert film, part documentary, complete with interviews from some of the people closest to the teen phenom. It also features cameos from Miley Cyrus, Usher and Ludacris, to name a few, during concert performances (filmed at Madison Square Garden last September) and interviews. So what does Bieber think his fans will love the most? “Fans will be really excited to see that I’m just a regular 16-year-old having fun just living my dream,” he said. “And it’s possible for anyone to live theirs.” And he’s not wrong: There’s plenty of behind-the-scenes gems that fans will go bananas over, including scenes of Bieber hanging with his pals and even footage and photos that fans may not have ever seen before. A testament to his star power, a number of A-listers made an appearance at the screening, including Spike Lee, Diggy Simmons, Jay Sean and the film’s director, Jon Chu. The audience at the screening was scattered with Bieber insiders, including his mom and his manager, Scooter Braun. The film opens February 11. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season Finale Recap: Richards Family Meltdown!

So much happened on the season finale of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills , it’s taken us awhile to sift through the carnage. After this nuclear war, the extent of the fallout may not fully be known for years. Or the reunion special. How did THG’s critic respond to the events of last night, which included family feuds, cat fights and relationships unraveling one after the other? Find out now … Wow. I’ve seen a lot of Housewivery battles in my day, and nothing compared to last night’s limo ride to nowhere. We knew Kim and Kyle have family issues, but didn’t realize just how deep rooted those issues actually are. I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start at the beginning. We open with last week’s final scene. Camille and a sprinkle of Grammer minions toasted Kelsey’s Tony nod, and the air was thick with “I don’t want to be here.” By the way, did anyone notice that the woman next to Camille bears a striking resemblance to The OC ‘s Julie Cooper-Nichol (Melinda Clarke)? It’s more of the same between Camille and Kelsey as they headed to midtown, and it was painful for everyone involved to watch Camille continue to kiss Kelsey’s ass, even though he wanted NO part of her. She said it herself during a heart-to-heart with one of her very few female friends: Kelsey did everything he could to avoid talking about and engaging in their failing marriage at the Tony Awards. Camille finally realized that she was reduced to begging the pr!ck to stay in their marriage. As nuts as she is, I felt for Camille in that moment. Crazy may have a “Jesus complex,” but she’s just as human as the rest of us (Thank God. The jury was out for a bit).

Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Tops Billboard Digital Songs Chart

Single debuts at #1 and breaks Taylor Swift’s previous sales record. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” Photo: Jive Don’t hold it against her, but Britney Spears has a hit on her hands. Her new track, “Hold It Against Me,” which was released last week, topped the Billboard Digital Songs chart . The Dr.Luke/ Max Martin-produced song, the lead single from the singer’s yet-untitled March album, sold 411,000 downloads in its first week available for purchase. The debut also means that Spears broke a record. According to Billboard, that is Spears’ best sales week for a digital song as well as largest debut for a woman as a lead artist. She beat out the record previously held by Taylor Swift . In February, Swift’s “Today Was a Fairytale” sold 325,000 downloads; incidentally, Swift broke the record previously held by Spears when that track debuted at the top of the charts. Spears bumps Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” to #2; Wiz Khalifa moved up the chart to #3 with “Black and Yellow,” followed by Katy Perry’s “Firework,” which dropped two spots to #4. Other newcomers to the chart include Avril Lavigne’s “What the Hell” at #6 and Jay-Z and Kanye West’s collaboration, “H.A.M.,” at #10. Enrique Iglesias’ “Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You)” (#5), the Black Eyed Peas’ “The Time (Dirty Bit)” (#7), Lil Wayne’s “6 Foot 7 Foot” (#8) and Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R” (#9) round out the top 10. Spears is also the top seller on iTunes. Last week, when the song was released, Spears immediately jumped to the top of the iTunes charts in 16 countries . “This is absolutely incredible!” her manager Adam Leber tweeted last week’s about the song’s success. “Brit’s fans never cease to amaze me.” Are you feeling “Hold It Against Me”? Edward Furlong: Arrested, Broke as a Joke

Actor Edward Furlong was arrested yesterday for violating a domestic restraining order. Not only that, he’s behind in child support … and he’s broke. Ed told a judge this morning, “I’m out of money. I’m completely broke.” Furlong, 33, currently stars in the upcoming film The Green Hornet . FOR LONG : Doesn’t sound like Ed’s troubles are going away soon . A month behind in child support, Ed lamented that he has to pay 10 percent to his lawyer, 10 percent to his publicist and 10 percent to his manager. Think about it. After that, he only has 70 percent of his earnings to blow on stuff other than his kid … how the heck is he supposed to get by, man? In his defense, sort of, Furlong says the judge never took this into account when ordering the child support his ex, Rachael Kneeland, requested. She’s requested that he up that sum and spousal support. The judge didn’t decide whether to modify the support agreement, so it remains as is for now. Things aren’t looking so hot for Furlong in any case. Furlong was taken into custody yesterday, after allegedly violating a restraining order by getting too close to Kneeland. Sounds like a fun situation. Hey, at least he joined our celebrity mug shots gallery. That’s got to count for something … it’s a pretty exclusive club. And an awesome one.

Justin Bieber Flips Out On Reporter About Sex Life

Yea, I Knew That Title Would Get You In Here Justin Bieber 16-year-old teen singing sensation, Justin Bieber, unleashed his anger on a reporter for Heat magazine in Britain, who inquired about his private life. It was most likely due to the fact, Bieber was caught in a scandal this week, after a sneaky Bauer Griffin paparazzo with telephoto lenses, snapped intrusive photos of the “Never Let You Go” singer getting intimate with his 18-year-old actress girlfriend, Selena Gomez, during a getaway in the Caribbean. As you can tell, Gomez is of age, Bieber is not. Selena Gomez An angry and frustrated Bieber lashed out at the reporter, due to all the bad publicity that came his way this week, which saw his fans send death threats to Gomez. A clearly upset Bieber stated, he will no longer be sharing items regarding his love life. During an internet chat, his manager also tried to calm his audience down, by stating Bieber and Gomez are just “very close friends.” Yea, they looked pretty close in those pictures.
