Just two weeks after he was murdered at his Marathon clothing store, Nipsey Hussle’s being remembered at a local school. Administrators at Crete Academy Charter school revealed a HUGE mural painted across their basketball court of the late rapper. Crete Academy is located in Crenshaw and just blocks away from where Nipsey was gunned down. “For our kids to look at Nipsey and see to see everything he’s done, what he was able to accomplish and how much he gave back to the community is huge for them…because he looks like them,” said Crete Academy Founder Hattie Mitchell to CBS LA. “He grew up where they grew up. He’s the epitome of everything that they want to be and aspire to be.” The mural was done by artist Gustavo Zermeno and the idea of Venice Basketball League CEO Nick Ansom. Lathan, 56, who was one of the two men who were shot and wounded during the March 31 shooting has been in jail since Monday. One of the terms for most California parolees is that they have no interaction with felons or gang members. Due to Hussle’s affiliation with the Rollin 60’s Crips, it is widely believed that Lathan may have violated his parole that way. Lathan had served 20 years for murder before being released on parole. “Gov. Gavin Newsom should order the immediate release of Kerry. His arrest sends a horrible message to parolees trying to integrate into society and for [corrections] officials to label Hussle, who was a Grammy-nominated artist entrepreneur, gentrification fighter and philanthropist, as a known gang member is a slap in the face to his family and our grieving community,” community activist Najee Ali told The Los Angeles Times on Friday. Then, tragedy struck. Lathan, Hussle and another man were standing outside of The Marathon Clothing store when Eric Holder approached them. After a brief verbal confrontation between he and Hussle, the two shook hands and Holder left. He then later returned, opening fire, hitting Lathan in the back and shooting Hussle numerous times. Hussle died at an LA area hospital. Holder was arrested on April 2 and has been charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder in the killing. A public memorial service was held Thursday for Hussle at the Staples Center followed by a long procession through the streets of Los Angeles, culminating in a large gathering on the newly minted Nipsey Hussle Square where The Marathon Clothing Store is located. “The Marathon Continues,” was an underlying theme throughout as the streets of South Central L.A. filled with well wishers, fans and more. He was laid to rest in a private ceremony in Hollywood Hills on Friday. This was a monumental home going for someone who deserved all of the praise and love he got. The memorial had so many moments of love and appreciation that it was hard to keep up. Thousands are expected to turn out for the “Celebration of Life” service at Staples but those who are unable to attend can tune into BET, who will broadcast the funeral service in its entirety beginning at 1 p.m. E.T. on BET and BET Digital. If the January recording sessions for the soon-to-be-released Revenge Of The Dreamers 3 album was the filling-up of the hype powder keg, Dreamville Fest was the result of lighting the fuse. The excitement was palpable, the ground was soggy, and in the wake of the tragic death of Nipsey Hussle, the energy was uplifting. It’s almost as if the hip-hop God’s knew that people needed a reason to smile after an extremely difficult week. It should be noted that in addition to almost every artist paying tribute to the slain Los Angeles rapper, philanthropist, and entrepreneur, there were fans proudly wearing their Victory Lap merch and standing in long lines to take photos in front of an art installation. Earth Gang, Bas, Cozz, Omen, Lute, Ari Lennox (good GOD, Ari Lennox…), J.I.D., and J. Cole have set themselves up to be a powerful entity for the foreseeable future. Each and every performance held the air of superstardom whether it was Ari’s voice traveling powerfully-yet-pleasingly across the festival lawn, or J.I.D. completely destroying every syllable in the English language acapella and over instrumental. Bas’ set was epic, Cozz rapped like he was never gonna rap another bar in his life, Lute came with ALL the groovy vibes, Omen gave the fans the lyricism that they expect from him. Before he even said a word the roar from the crowd was deafening. J. Cole stood there, gazing upon the crowd that he and his cohorts had brought together in awe. He seemed legitimately in shock and it was completely on-brand for Cole’s beloved sense of earnestness. This special night also brought some never-before-seen moments like Cole and 21 Savage performing “A Lot” for the very first time together. People might have been surprised that these two polar opposite rappers have such a close bond, but proof of their camaraderie is in the statement that 21 slipped in just before Cole began his verse: “Y’all ready to hear J. We have no idea when or if Meek has even been to Raleigh to perform before, but the fact that he came out to a small town to rock with the team is another testament to how much respect other artists have for the Dreamville movement. Source: Shareif Ziyadat / Getty It’s being reported that at the time of his tragic and untimely death , Nipsey Hussle was n the process of helping a friend, who was newly released from jail. According to TMZ , sources claim the Grammy nominated rapper was at his store picking out clothes for a friend who had been incarcerated for the past 20 years. Apparently, the friend was one of the two other people who were also shot at the store along with the rapper. While there have been questions as to why Nipsey was at his store without security, TMZ reported that sources close to the rapper said the shopping trip for his pal was a “spur of the moment” thing and that his team had no clue he had even left his house. As we previously reported , Hussle, whose real name Ermias Asghedom, was pronounced dead at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday (March 31), after being shot six times in the head and chest in front of his clothing company, the Marathon Store. LAPD announced on Tuesday that they caught Eric Holder , the suspect believed to be responsible for the 33-year-old’s murder. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department revealed that the 29-year-old was caught by deputies sometime before 1:30 p.m. While Holder has been linked to a local gang, police believe that the deadly encounter was personal. TMZ wrote that it may have started because Nipsey shunned Holder, who wanted to have a conversation with the rapper. Prior to Nipsey’s death, the Grammy-nominated rapper Hussle had been a staple in his Crenshaw community, buying up store fronts to revitalize the area and provide a much-needed economic boost in the area. He was also known to help promote STEM among young Black girls, help the homeless and others in the neighborhood. In addition, on Wednesday Nipsey’s security guard J-Roc took to social media to announce that he is retiring from the business. In an emotional Instagram post, Roc wrote, “Never in a million years I thought I would be writing some s–t like this … we haven’t made a 100 Million yet … we was suppose to grow old and I call u big nose shoot jokes on you all day… but instead I’m here in tears writing this I wish I was there I would switch places with you any day the world need you here I’m so confused, lost , hurt.” He added, ” I lost a brother, best friend, a mentor all I can here [sic] you saying now is If it was me, I would tell you, ‘N—a, live your life and grow.’ I’d tell you, ‘Finish what we started, reach them heights, you know?’” J-Roc also promised to look after Lauren London and the rapper’s two children. “I got the Babies and L forever I’m done with all this S–t I retire from being a bodyguard I love you HUSSLE THA GREAT,” he wrote. Source: David Crotty / Getty Hours after Nipsey Hussle was tragically shot dead in front of his clothing store, fans flocked to the Crenshaw storefront for a candlelight vigil honoring the slain rapper. According to Hollywood Life , hundreds of people were “crying, taking video, taking pictures, singing Nipsey’s songs, playing his songs on bluetooth speakers and chanting his name over and over and over.” In addition, one witness told the celebrity and gossip website, “Everyone was honoring Nipsey in their own special way and singing his songs and pouring out liquor in his honor.” Another woman, a friend of Hussle’s, told CBS-LA that the rapper had offered to help her daughter with her modeling career. “I was a childhood friend,” Marquesha Lawson said. “I’ve known him all my life. He was like family to me.” “He cared about us. We cared about him.” As we previously reported , the 33-year-old rapper whose legal name was Ermias Davidson Asghedom, was reportedly gunned down in front of his clothing store, the Marathon Store. Witnesses claim he was shot six times and paramedics were working on him at the scene, where he was unresponsive. Two other men are listed in critical condition. Mike Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department claimed on Sunday that this is an ongoing investigation and that no one has been detained. However, according to CBS-Los Angeles , LAPD announced they are looking for a single male gunman who fled the area. They also suspect that the shooting may have been gang-related. Investigators are also talking to witnesses and canvassing the area for surveillance video. Hussle is survived by two children and fiancee, actress Lauren London .
