Justin Bieber’s Top 18 Moments: The Countdown Continues!

Before Bieber celebrates his 18th birthday on Thursday, we’re counting down his best moments so far. Check out #13 to #6! By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage Justin Bieber is one day away from turning 18, and we’re counting down his 18 greatest moments so far in honor of the occasion. This week, we kicked things off by looking back on some of the highlights, from Justin crashing this year’s Oscars to his headline-making romance with girlfriend Selena Gomez. In the latest installment of our Bieber birthday countdown, we pick up with #13 to #6, narrowing down the early achievements that helped shape the teen into the pop superstar we know and love. We’ll celebrate this week until the final reveal on Justin’s big day on Thursday. What will be the #1 moment? You’ll have to keep it locked at MTVNews.com! 13. Bieber Drops “Baby” Video In February 2010, Justin dropped his star-making “Baby” video . Proving he had lots of swag, he enlisted Ludacris and Drake to appear in the bowling-party-themed clip, which featured a romance with his pretty leading lady. The video also displayed Bieber’s budding persona as a charming pop Romeo that no girl can resist. “It starts off, I really like this girl, but we didn’t [get] along; we couldn’t be together,” he told MTV News while shooting the video. “Basically, I want her back and [I’m] kind of going through the whole thing. I’m chasing her around, trying to get her, and she’s kind of playing hard to get, but I’m persistent. I keep going.” 12. Justin’s Voice Changes No one is immune to puberty, and that includes teen stars. As Bieber continued to mature before our eyes, his voice also took a turn for the manly. But he wasn’t too worried about it. “Everyone’s voice changes. Puberty is a natural thing,” Bieber said in 2010. “I have the best vocal coach in the world and we’re working on my voice and doing what I need to do. It’s not like as soon as you hit puberty you stop singing. Usher is the best mentor in the world and he survived puberty. He tells me what to do, what not to do.” 11. Bieber Goes Hip-Hop Between his rap persona, Shawty Mane , and getting love from a number of A-list hip-hop pals like Kanye West, Luda, Drake and Lil Wayne , Bieber has proved that swag is more than just a hashtag to him. This kid can legitimately hang with some of the hardest guys in the game — and hold his own. 10. 2011 Grammy Awards At last year’s Grammys, Bieber seemed poised to take home a trophy, but he famously lost in the prestigious Best New Artist category to Esperanza Spalding . He shook off the loss, though, and vowed that one day he would take home Grammy gold. He’s set to release his next album, Believe, in 2012. Grammy voters, take note! 9. Bieber Drops My World 2.0 For his second EP, My World 2.0, Bieber upped the ante when he enlisted folks like The-Dream to produce. While the record was released in March 2010, only months after his first EP, My World, the follow-up managed to eclipse the original thanks to memorable songs like “U Smile,” “Baby” and “Up.” 2.0 helped spark the frenzy known as Bieber Fever. The teen star even scored an MTV special on the series “Diary.” 8. Bieber Goes Under the Mistletoe He invited us all to premiere his video for “Mistletoe,” the lead single off his holiday-themed Under the Mistletoe. When he sat down with MTV News for his “MTV First” interview , he talked all about shooting the video in Nashville, his desire to make a cool Christmas album and getting the chance to work with heroes Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men. 7. Fans Welcomed to My World In 2009, Bieber dropped his first EP . Full of sugary-sweet pop, the songs launched him from viral Internet sensation to full-on star. The album was rife with puppy-love tracks that displayed Bieber’s ear for melodies and recalled some of the great pop music of the past from stars like New Kids on the Block and even Michael Jackson. 6. First Film, ‘Never Say Never,’ Released Bieber’s first foray into the world of big-screen blockbusters came courtesy of a 3-D film, “Never Say Never,” that served as a documentary and a concert film. It addressed any of his haters with in-depth interviews with the folks who know him best and Bieber himself, who recalled his personal hardships before making it big. If that wasn’t enough for the Beliebers, it also featured a 3-D Bieber shaking his floppy hair around. Share your birthday wishes for Justin and weigh in on the top 18 moments on our Facebook page! Stick with MTV News all week as we count down Justin Bieber ‘s 18 greatest moments leading up to his 18th birthday. Mariah Carey Avoiding Upskirts for Charity of the Day

I think the public service in all this is that bitch was trying to prevent an upskirt…because as much as I love upskirt on even the most battered pussy…I don’t think the general public can handle the kind of crazy going on in this fat baby making older box….but as someone with heart disease and who is going to die from heart disease…I should be more positive about her chairty and focused less on her awkward pussy cover up…

Mariah Carey described herself as “almost incapable” still of talking about Houston’s death, Carey began there, reflecting on the “home-going” service she attended Saturday for Whitney Houston. “It was great,” she said of the nearly four-hour funeral. “Such a class act, the way she went out and the way her family dealt with it. “I don’t think people could ever understand our relationship,” Mariah said of Houston, with whom she recorded the hit “When You Believe” in 1998. “There was always this supposed rivalry in the beginning and then we did the duet and became friends. I saw her towards the end. I loved her. It’s very heavy emotionally.”

Whitney Houston ‘Never Forgot’ Her Roots, Fans Say

‘She meant a lot to us, she never forgot where she came from,’ a fan tells MTV News on the day of her funeral. By Rob Markman Whitney Houston in East Orange, NJ in 1987 Photo: Ron Galella/WireImage NEWARK, New Jersey — It was a day of both sadness and celebration as Whitney Houston ‘s fans gathered in her birthplace to mourn the death of the fallen pop diva on Saturday (February 18). Police set up blockades on the streets surrounding New Hope Baptist Church , keeping the public several blocks away from the private funeral in every direction. On the corner of Orange and Nesbitt streets, a group of fans gathered to sing some of Houston’s biggest hits like “The Greatest Love of All” and “I Will Always Love You” . On Sussex Avenue, about four blocks from the church, another group of fans gathered. A Philadelphia artist who goes by the name Mark G. drew a portrait of Houston, which he had fans sign. By the time MTV News interviewed him he had gathered hundreds of loving notes and signatures, and the artist said he plans to give the portrait to Whitney’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, as a present through a connection he said he has with the family. “Whitney was connected to the fans, and when she left, she shined her light and this is something creatively that I did that connects the people to Whitney,” Mark G. explained of the artwork he created in ballpoint pen. “My heart goes out to the Whitney Houston family,” Miami native Karin Collins said. “I feel so bad, I was crying all last night. I’m blasting her music in my car everyday and I just feel so bad and my heart goes out to Bobbi Kristina as well as her grandmother [Cissy Houston].” While fans were mostly upbeat and positive, some Newark residents were upset by the decision to keep the service private without holding a bigger public send-off at the much larger Prudential Center, as was first rumored. “It was sad that they didn’t have it in the Prudential Center, I don’t know why they didn’t do that,” Brian Collins said. “All the fans in Newark could’ve came out and just gave their all in all out to her, pay tribute to Whitney Houston. She meant a lot to us, she never forgot where she came from and I love you Whitney.” With things as they were logistically, fans might have been more comfortable watching the invite-only funeral from home anyway. But the crowds that assembled at each police check-point wanted to feel closer to the ceremony. On Norfolk Street off Central Avenue, about 75 people surrounded a CNN transmission truck and watched as R. Kelly sang a spirited rendition of “I Look to You,” a song that he penned for Houston in 2009. After the funeral an excited group waited on Central Avenue hoping to see some of the ceremony’s high-profile guests as they filed out. There were no sightings of Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys , Kevin Costner or any other celebrity from the fans’ vantage point, but when Whitney Houston’s golden hearse turned onto Central, fans gave the musical icon one last cheer. Family, friends and celebrities packed into the Newark church where Whitney Houston grew up and remembered the late singer’s voice, love and — most of all — faith at her homegoing service Saturday. The nearly four-hour service featured performances from Alicia Keys, R. Kelly, the Winans family, Stevie Wonder and others. Many of the performers adapted lyrics in tribute to Houston, including Kim Burrell and Stevie Wonder, who altered his version of one of Houston’s favorite songs, “Ribbon in the Sky.” Houston died a week ago at age 48 in Los Angeles. Many of the speakers spoke about Whitney Houston’s Baptist background and her strong faith in God, including an emotional Tyler Perry, who received a standing ovation. “I am completely thankful to God for all he has done her life,” Perry said. “There is a grace that kept on carrying her. … Whitney Houston loved the Lord.” Actor Kevin Costner also received a standing ovation after he spoke of Houston’s courage when she tried out for a starring role with him in the 1992 movie “The Bodyguard.” Oprah Winfrey, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Spike Lee, Roberta Flack, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton and Houston’s former husband, Bobby Brown, were among those in attendance. Brown and his entourage later left the church during the service, but there are conflicting reports as to why he left. Whitney Houston Memorialized By Stars, Family, Friends At Childhood Church

‘Whitney, you are the only one who could bring us all together,’ New Hope Baptist Church pastor says in Newark, New Jersey. By Tomika L. Anderson Whitney Houston in 1995 Photo: 20th Century Fox/Getty Images The whole world went to church on Saturday (February 18) to say goodbye to one of the greatest singers of all time. Attendees of all ages, religious beliefs and walks of life, gathered to celebrate superstar singer Whitney Elizabeth Houston, a native of Newark, New Jersey. The state’s governor, Chris Christie, flew flags across New Jersey at half mast in her honor. The 48-year-old music icon died on February 11 , a day before the Grammy Awards , in Los Angeles. She is expected to buried on Sunday. (The official cause of death has not yet been confirmed.) Despite the singer’s well-documented struggles with substance abuse, on Saturday, there was very little talk of controversy during the largely upbeat, often humorous and emotional Home-Going ceremony held at New Hope Baptist Church, where Houston first sang in the choir as a child. It was attended by more than 1,500 mourners, including Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey, Kevin Costner, Alicia Keys , Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack and Whitney’s longtime friends, the Winans family. The ceremony largely underscored her deep Baptist roots and love of the gospel, whether through word or song. This was evidenced by a performance by Grammy-winning gospel star Donnie McClurkin, who sang one of Houston’s favorites, “Stand,” at the request of her family. Filmmaker Tyler Perry, who spoke early in the service, said that in conversations with Houston he learned that it was her faith in God that carried her through the darkest times of her life. “Say whatever you want,” Perry said. “God is for her. She is resting with the angels.” Gospel singer BeBe Winans, who caused ripples of laughter as he talked about the “crazy Whitney” he knew, wept as he sang the touching ballad “I Really Miss You,” a song he wrote about his deceased brother who also died at the age of 48. Bishop T.D. Jakes and gospel star Kim Burrell also remembered the fallen diva, with Burrell personalizing the Sam Cooke classic, “A Change Is Gonna Come.” The legendary Stevie Wonder did something similar later, changing the lyrics of one of his most famous songs from “There’s a ribbon in the sky for our love” to “There’s an angel in the choir of love.” Actor Kevin Costner, who fought to have Houston cast opposite him in the groundbreaking 1992 film “The Bodyguard,” spoke of Houston’s enduring doubts about herself and her talent, even at the height of her musical career. He urged her to “go sing for your heavenly father, Whitney,” as he fought back tears. There were a few anxious moments during the ceremony, however, involving Houston’s ex-husband Bobby Brown . He apparently attempted to bring nine people to sit in the front row at the ceremony and was turned away. A source at the funeral told MTV News that Brown was encouraged not to cause a scene at the funeral by walking out, but the singer reportedly got on his tour bus and took off, saying he loved Whitney but felt disrespected by the church. He reiterated the sentiment in statement released by his rep. Houston’s mentor, Clive Davis, brought the audience back to the reason they’d all gathered in that church. “You wait for a voice like that for a lifetime,” he said. “A face like that. A smile like that. A presence like that for a lifetime. And when one person embodies it all — well, it takes my breath away.” He called Houston an eternally loyal friend. “Yes, she admitted to the craziness in her life, and confessed to Oprah about her battles but when I needed her, she was there,” he said. To her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, Davis said, “Always be proud of your mother,” before concluding that Whitney was going to “raise the roof in heaven like no one else has done before.” Her longtime bodyguard, Ray, who found her body in a Beverly Hills hotel room, wanted people to remember Houston the woman and not just the singer, adding that entertainers in general should be treated with more respect. He was referring to Houston’s tarnished image in the media after years of battling addiction. “We have to give back to all our entertainers. Treat them with love and stop ridiculing them,” he said. “They give their lives to you. They’re not with their families. This lady right here, she loved you. I know that. I was with her every day.” Controversial R&B singer R. Kelly sang a song he wrote for Houston, “I Look to You,” moments before one of the ceremony’s final performances, “Tomorrow,” by the Winans family. It was followed by the eulogy given by Marvin Winans. The churched played Houston’s chart-shattering hit “I Will Always Love You,” the song that was without a doubt her most famous, as pall bearers carried her gleaming silver casket out of the church. Whitney Houston Bonds With Mariah Carey In Rare 1998 Interview

‘Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words’ airs tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on MTV. By John Mitchell Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey in 1998 Photo: MTV News Back in the fall of 1998, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey set aside their long-rumored rivalry and came together to record a duet, “When You Believe,” for the animated film “The Prince of Egypt.” An interview with the two divas from that time is one of the many rare moments unearthed for MTV’s live 30-minute tribute to the late singer, entitled “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words,” airing tonight (February 15) at 7:30 p.m. ET on MTV. Asked about the song and whether they’d ever experienced a miracle in their own lives, Houston was the first to respond, telling MTV, “Yeah, I have. That baby sitting right up there. That’s my miracle.” She was referring, of course, to a then-5-year-old Bobbi Kristina Brown, her only child with ex-husband Bobby Brown. Bobbi Kristina has had a particularly difficult time dealing with the passing of her mother, and was herself rushed from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where Houston died , to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center less than 24 hours after her death. Bobbi was said to be “hysterical, exhausted and inconsolable,” sources close to the situation told TMZ . After Carey responds, “I don’t have a child, so I can’t say the same thing, but maybe one day I will,” Houston turns to her peer for a candid moment that seems like more of an aside between two new friends than an interview sound bite. “When you do, you will realize that is the ultimate miracle. If you think you’ve got records and you’ve done all this stuff and all that stuff, [it’s] nothing like that,” Houston says. “That’s a true love that costs nothing. Unconditional love.” Though they always insisted they were always on friendly terms, rumors of a rivalry between Houston and Carey persisted throughout the ’90s. Indeed, they were often pitted against each other on the music charts and by critics who declared their respective talents to be comparable. Even after they chose to silence rumors by recording “When You Believe” and conducting interviews together, the buzz continued. Some critics even believed they were trying to “outdo each other” during their performance of the song at the 1999 Academy Awards. Tune in as we celebrate the life of an icon with “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words” tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on MTV. Whitney Houston’s Musical Legacy, By The Numbers

We break down the stunning sales numbers behind the late diva’s record-setting career. By Gil Kaufman Whitney Houston performs at the 1999 Brit Awards Photo: JMEnternational/ RedFerns There had been other explosive young divas before — Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner — but in the 1980s and early 1990s, Whitney Houston seized the spotlight so fast, so early, so young and so forcefully that she set a bar so high singers are still trying to vault it today. The daughter of gospel great Cissy Houston and cousin of “I Say a Little Prayer” singer Dionne Warwick, Houston was discovered as a teenager and burst into the national consciousness in 1985 with her self-titled debut. The seamless mix of wide-screen ballads and dance-floor-worthy anthems spawned such iconic hits as “You Give Good Love,” “Saving All My Love for You,” “The Greatest Love of All” and “How Will I Know.” A radiant breath of fresh air, Houston rode the music-video wave to stardom, scooping up dozens of awards for her smash first album, including two Grammys and an MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video for “How Will I Know.” Along with Michael Jackson, Houston helped pave the way for a generation of black artists to exploit the video medium to reach a global audience. She did it by spinning off a string of indelible hits in such an joyful manner that her vocal feats of strength appeared effortless. On the eve of the 54th annual Grammy Awards , Houston was found dead Saturday in Los Angeles at age 48. At press time, the cause of death was still unknown. She had last taken the stage Thursday night at a pre-Grammy event on Thursday night. Just hours before the news broke, friend Kelly Price said stories of Houston’s ongoing struggles were exaggerated. CNN reported Saturday night that Jennifer Hudson would participate in a tribute to Houston at Sunday night’s Grammys. Houston died just hours before the start of the annual pre-Grammy party thrown by legendary music impresario Clive Davis, the mogul who signed Houston to Arista Records after seeing her perform in New York clubs in the early 1980s. Though her hitmaking days were long past, Houston’s influence continues today, from the sound of such avowed acolytes as Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Mary J. Blige to an untold number of singers hoping to stake their claim on such reality singing competitions as “American Idol,” “X Factor” and “The Voice.” Houston’s muscular, gospel-tinged vocal gymnastics and her telegenic spark raised the bar to a level today’s singers — from Rihanna to Adele — are still striving to achieve. By the time her career faltered in the 2000s as she struggled with substance abuse , personal drama and vocal issues, Houston had already blazed an unstoppable trail and was ranked by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most celebrated female vocalist of all time, including 26 Grammy nominations and 6 wins, along with sales of more than 170 million albums, singles and videos. Some of Houston’s career achievements:

Bobby Brown Breaks Down Onstage Paying Tribute To Whitney Houston

Singer’s shaken ex-husband turns to Mississippi crowd for support during New Edition concert. By Jason Kaufman Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown in 2000 Photo: Larry Marano/Getty Images Just hours after Whitney Houston’s death , her ex-husband, Bobby Brown, took to the stage and was visibly shaken in front of the crowd. Brown was performing with New Edition in Mississippi. Upon hearing the news of Houston’s passing, TMZ.com reported that he was comforted by his bandmates backstage at Southaven’s Landers Center. The Associated Press says members of the R&B act took to the stage without him and told the crowd, “This one is for Whitney.” Brown soon made his way onstage to join them and was met with a standing ovation. An emotional Brown spoke about Houston to the near-capacity crowd. “First of all, I want to tell you that I love you all,” he reportedly said. “Second, I would like to say, ‘I love you Whitney.’ The hardest thing for me to do is come on this stage.” Brown told the fans that their support for New Edition over the years was the only thing that allowed him to get through the show. Us magazine reports that the audience appeared to be willing him through a performance of New Edition’s 1996 single “Hit Me Off” with their applause. A concertgoer told Us that Brown, who was married to Houston for almost 15 years, broke down onstage again while performing his solo hit “Roni” and asked the audience to sing along. During the intermission, the early Houston hit “You Give Good Love” played over the Landers Center’s sound system. The AP reported that New Edition performed 10 songs over more than an hour. As the concert wound down, Brown could not hold back the tears. As his voice cracked during one of the final numbers, he waved to fans and walked off the stage. Brown, who had a tumultuous marriage with Houston before their split, was not available to talk to the media either before or after the performance. Todd Mastry, the executive director of the Landers Center, was asked by reporters about the mood backstage before the show. “It’s what you would expect it to be when something like this happens,” Mastry said. “Respectful.” While Brown was dealing with his grief in the South, artists across the country paid tribute to Houston, with stars like Mariah Carey and Rihanna taking to Twitter while Alicia Keys, Clive Davis, LL Cool J and Tony Bennett toasted the late star at several pre-Grammy parties in Los Angeles.
