Mariah Carey Expecting Twins, Nick Cannon Confirms

‘We are having twins,’ Cannon said on his radio show on Thursday. By Jocelyn Vena Mariah Carey Photo: Jemal Countess/Getty Images After accidentally calling her baby bump “they,” Mariah Carey had everyone speculating that she and Nick Cannon were having twins. And on his radio show on Thursday morning (December 16), Cannon confirmed as much. “We are having twins,” he told his listeners. He said that while the couple has been trying to keep details about the pregnancy as private as possible, Carey let the news slip to the president and first lady when she spoke to them backstage at TNT’s “Christmas in Washington 2010” on Sunday. “They, ironically enough, questioned my wife about, you know, ‘So, what are you having, are you having twins?’ ” he recalled of the conversation Carey had with the Obamas. “And at this point, she hadn’t told anybody anything because doctors advised us to keep it to ourselves until we get further along. And because of the excitement, because of the emotion, she was overwhelmed [and] she shared with the president and first lady that we are having twins.” On Wednesday, Cannon danced around the twins question in an interview. “It’s a touchy issue, because you never want to speak on too much stuff too early, but my wife, at one time, she referred to her stomach as ‘they,’ and that probably wasn’t the wrong thing for her to do,” he said to E! News . “That’s all I’m gonna say.” The couple has yet to reveal the due date, but Carey admitted back in October that finally telling everyone she was pregnant after months of speculation was a “relief.” “I feel like it made everyone else around me a little more relaxed,” she said on Cannon’s radio show about making the announcement. “I feel like they were extra super-cautious about everything, yet not, because they didn’t know they were allowed to be.” Related Artists Mariah Carey Nick Cannon

Tricky Stewart Defends New Michael Jackson Tune, ‘Keep Your Head’

‘This was a record that [MJ] wrote and that he produced. And I just got in there,’ the producer maintains. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by James Lacsina Tricky Stewart Photo: MTV News While detractors of Michael Jackson’s Michael album cry foul over the unfinished material that makes up the bulk of the posthumous project, producer Christopher “Tricky” Stewart is insisting that his contribution to the release was material MJ put together — and finished — himself. In the case of “Keep Your Head Up,” one of the album’s biggest standouts, Stewart told MTV News that the track was not a remake of any kind. Rather, he just added minor additional production flourishes to the number. “The main thing I wanted to do was make sure that Michael would like it,” said Stewart, who has worked with Beyonc

Did You Know Mariah Carey’s Mother Saved Christmas Last Night?

We’ve been sidetracked with Golden Globe news (and blues) today, so let’s refresh ourselves with an update from the Lord: Christmas is saved! I knew Mariah Carey’s ABC Christmas special “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You” would revive yuletide cheer last night, but I didn’t know that Mariah Carey’s opera diva mother Patricia Carey would summon Jesus himself off a platinum, myrrh-dotted cloud and to his feet in applause. Get ready for the definitive, divalicious version of “O Come All Ye Faithful.”

Kanye West Bests Nicki Minaj In Billboard Battle

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy sold nearly half a million in first week. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images In the end, the chart battle between Kanye West and Nicki Minaj wasn’t much of a contest. In the biggest album release week of the year, Yeezy easily bested the Young Money honey. Preliminary figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan peg his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy debuting with more than 495,000 copies sold compared to 375,000 for Minaj’s long-awaited major-label debut, Pink Friday. Though some questioned Kanye’s decision to leak a song a week in the months leading up to the release of Fantasy, including nearly all of the album’s major tracks, in the end, fans still appear to have come out for the rapper’s fifth studio album. Fantasy matched the #1 debut of Kanye’s previous effort, 2008’s vocal-heavy 808s & Heartbreak, which moved 450,000 copies in its first week. Neither, however, come close to reaching the MC’s chart peak, which he achieved in 2007 with Graduation , which also debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart after selling a whopping 957,000 copies in its first week in the midst of a much-hyped chart battle with 50 Cent’s album Curtis . After more than two years of headline-grabbing guest spots on tracks by everyone from Gucci Mane to Mariah Carey, Trey Songz, Bobby Valentino, Mya, Robin Thicke, Ludacris and, of course, Kanye, anticipation was high for Minaj’s Friday . In the end, Minaj just narrowly missed the record for the best debut album sales by a female rapper, falling a bit short of the mark set by former Fugees member Lauryn Hill in 1998 with her smash hit The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which moved 423,000 copies in its chart bow. Kanye West, Justin Bieber Join Tradition Of Mega-Release Weeks

This isn’t the first time labels have loaded the shelves with new releases all at once. By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker Kanye West Photo: Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images The sheer volume of mainstream albums dropping this week makes our head spin like that ancient artifact, the vinyl record. Monday saw the release of Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday, Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Ke$ha’s Cannibal, Jay-Z’s The Hits Collection Vol. 1, Lloyd Banks’ Hunger for More 2 and My Chemical Romance’s Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. And Friday is the big day for Justin Bieber’s My Worlds Acoustic. Many may wonder why the big wigs of the music industry would put out such a gargantuan selection all at once. But there’s a precedent for this kind of strategy. In fact, music lovers have been through this very same overload dilemma a handful of times over the last decade. Here’s a look back at some of them: September 11, 2001 became a national tragedy, it was supposed to be a huge day for the music business. Mariah Carey’s “Glitter” soundtrack, Jay-Z’s Blueprint, Bob Dylan’s Love and Theft, Ben Folds’ Rockin’ the Suburbs, Nickelback’s Silver Side Up and P.O.D.’s Satellite were among the many albums that were released at the beginning of the week. November 18, 2003 marked the start to one of the year’s biggest music release weeks. The range of albums seemed to hit every demographic imaginable. Releases included Britney Spears’ In the Zone, Blink-182’s self-titled fifth studio album, Timbaland & Magoo’s Under Construction, Part II, Christmas albums from Whitey Houston and Ashanti, compilations from Michael Jackson, Moby and Joe Satriani, and live albums/DVDs from Dave Matthews Band and Linkin Park. Following the pattern of Thanksgiving week album releases, November 22, 2004 began another big week. Two “American Idol” winners, Fantasia and Ruben Studdard went head-to-head with Free Yourself and I Need an Angel, respectively. The shelves were also packed with U2’s How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, Gwen Stefani’s solo debut Love. Angel. Music. Baby., as well as other releases from Creed, Anthrax, Evanescence, Nirvana and Jessica Simpson. September 12, 2006 was the drop date of Justin Timberlake’s second solo album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, which produced five smash hit singles. That week John Mayer’s Continuum and Bob Seger’s Face the Promise were released, and both eventually went platinum. Other albums and compilations came from the Mars Volta, Papa Roach, Lionel Richie, Veruca Salt, Everclear, and the Barenaked Ladies. On September 11, 2007 after threatening to retire from music if his album Curtis was outsold, 50 Cent came in second to Kanye West’s Graduation. And though he wasn’t included in the 50 Cent Challenge, Kenny Chesney’s Just Who I Am: Pirates and Poets was released the same day and sold very well. The date also marked the release of Animal Collective’s Strawberry Jam, which didn’t exactly pose a threat. One of the wildest weeks of 2009’s album drop calendar was easily that of November 16 . Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster, Justin Bieber’s My World, Leona Lewis’ Echo, OneRepublic’s Waking Up, Kris Allen’s self-titled debut, Norah Jones’ The Fall, and compilations from both Janet Jackson and Fall Out Boy were some of the new additions to the music scene. Which new albums are you buying this week? Talk about it in the comments! Open the floodgates! It’s Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Stick with MTV News for everything you need to know about the brand-new music. Related Artists Kanye West Justin Bieber
