Michael Bay Taps Mark Wahlberg For ‘Transformers 4’

Mark Wahlberg : The new Shia LaBeouf ? Michael Bay and Paramount announced Thursday that Wahlberg, who stars in Bay’s real life crime pic Pain & Gain , will lead the franchise sequel Transformers 4 . “An actor of his caliber is the perfect guy to re-invigorate the franchise and carry on the Transformers ’ legacy,” said Bay in a statement. LaBeouf’s run as the squirrelly-scrappy lead of the Transformers franchise ended with Transformers: Dark of The Moon (he’s moving onward to more artsy fare, anyway — Von Trier ahoy !), but casting someone like Wahlberg changes the game considerably. He’s got the star power of Shia LaBeouf and Josh Duhamel in one. He was nominated twice for the Oscar. He is Mark Wahlberg . I imagine this deal going down one day on the Pain & Gain set over beers, Wahlberg in his Pain & Gain tracksuit ( or maybe this short shorts outfit ) and Bay in a smoking jacket, because for some reason I always picture Michael Bay in a smoking jacket. Feel the vibration! Full press release follows; weigh in on the casting move below. Does it change your feelings on Bay’s mega-blockbuster robot franchise at all? Can we now conceivably picture Transformers and Pain & Gain as connected worlds in the Michael Bay multiverse? HOLLYWOOD, CA (November 8, 2012) – After an exceptionally successful collaboration on the upcoming “Pain and Gain,” Michael Bay has cast Academy Award®-nominee Mark Wahlberg in the highly anticipated “TRANSFORMERS 4.” The film will hit theaters June 27th, 2014. “Mark is awesome. We had a blast working on “Pain and Gain” and I’m so fired up to be back working with him. An actor of his caliber is the perfect guy to re-invigorate the franchise and carry on the Transformers’ legacy,” said Bay. Bay will direct the next installment in the “TRANSFORMERS” series, which begins shooting next spring. From Paramount Pictures, a division of Viacom, Inc., in association with Hasbro, the film will be produced by Don Murphy & Tom DeSanto, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Ian Bryce, and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Bay, Brian Goldner and Mark Vahradian. Bay’s first “TRANSFORMERS” film was a box office sensation in 2007, opening at #1 and earning more than $700 million worldwide. His second installment “TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN” in 2009 grossed more than $830 million worldwide. In 2011, “TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON” was an even bigger hit worldwide, grossing more than a billion dollars to become the 5th highest grossing film of all time. To date, the franchise has earned more than $2.6 billion worldwide. From acclaimed director Michael Bay comes “Pain and Gain,” a new action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie. Based on the unbelievable true story of three personal trainers in 1990s Miami who, in pursuit of the American Dream, get caught up in a criminal enterprise that goes horribly wrong. Ed Harris, Tony Shalhoub, Rob Corddry, Rebel Wilson, and Bar Paly also star. The film is based on magazine articles by Pete Collins, with a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and produced by Donald DeLine, Michael Bay and Ian Bryce. “PAIN AND GAIN” opens in theaters everywhere April 26th, 2013.

Mark Wahlberg Apologizes For Inane 9-11 Remark

Give Mark Wahlberg credit for a swift, simple and seemingly sincere apology after a boast that he would have fended off 9/11 hijackers and prevented a plane from crashing. For reasons unknown, he said this to Men’s Journal . The quote: “If I was on the [hijacked] plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did. There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, ‘Okay, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry.'” This came up because Mark was initially booked on one of the fights that was hijacked, only to change it serendipitously. He mused about what might’ve been. It did not go over well. Wahlberg’s reps promptly issued a statement from the 40-year-old Contraband star admitting the foolishness of his statements and expressing remorse. “To speculate about such a situation is ridiculous to begin with, and to suggest I would’ve done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible,” Wahlberg wrote. “I deeply apologize to the families of the victims.” “My answer came off as insensitive, and that was certainly not my intention.”

Mark Wahlberg Claims He Could’ve Fended Off 9/11 Hijackers

If only Mark Wahlberg were on one of the planes hijacked on September 11, 2001. We don’t mean that to suggest that we wish Mark were dead – that’s precisely the point! In an interview with Men’s Journal , the Contraband star claims that if he were on board that fateful day, the storyline would’ve been much different. “If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did,” he says. He’s not speaking metaphorically, he’s apparently serious. Mark adds: “There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, ‘OK, we’re going to land this somewhere safely, don’t worry.'” Presumably, he’s kidding. He can’t think he would have been able to fight off multiple hijackers and land a plane single-handedly. We hope. But the question remains. Is this kind of boast insulting to the dead passengers and their families? Especially those on Flight 93, who basically died to protect others? UPDATE: Wahlberg has apologized, saying: “To suggest I would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible. I deeply apologize to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive. It was certainly not my intention.” [Photo: WENN.com]

See Mark Wahlberg Return To a Life of Duct Tape-Assisted Crime in the Contraband Trailer

Did you guys realize that Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale were starring in a little heist movie called Contraband ? Me neither, but that’s probably because Universal has quietly scheduled the film, from Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur, for a quiet box office death release next January. But we’re going to need something to watch during that winter wasteland month so let’s take a look and see if super-angry Mark Wahlberg, his abs, and and Kate Beckinsale undressing for the camera can’t motivate us to buy tickets.

“But I really want to direct” isn’t just a cliché — it’s also a burning ambition among the movies’ thespian class. 5 Oscar-Nominated Roles of 2011 and Their Oscar-Winning Forebears

The Oscars mean nothing without their celebrated past, and this year, five Oscar-nominated performances stood out to me as the descendants of five previous winners. Can you name the Academy-loved role that almost perfectly mirrors Nicole Kidman’s in Rabbit Hole ? The consecutive Oscar-winning Best Actors who laid the track for Mark Zuckerberg? What about the histrionic mother who predated Melissa Leo’s character in The Fighter . Join us for a trip into the Oscar vault. For the hell of it, we’re picking which performances were better, too.

Fighter Producer Todd Lieberman Chats About His First Awards-Season Marathon

Just as The Fighter was a near-lock to earn Oscar nominations today, it’s a near-lock to win at least one or two statuettes during the Feb. 27 ceremony. If you had predicted this eventuality six years ago when Todd Lieberman and his producing partner David Hoberman first undertook the project — a troubled drama amid a development slate that included Beauty Shop and The Shaggy Dog — the producers might have driven you to the hospital themselves. But those crowd-pleasing roots grew into the film The Fighter is today — an awards-season juggernaut for Best Picture rookies Lieberman, Hoberman and star/co-producer Mark Wahlberg.
