Doctor Who, Marvel Fans All A-Twitter Over News That Christopher Eccleston Will Play Dark Elf Baddie in Thor 2

Christopher Eccleston has quite the fan base.  News that the former Doctor Who and 28 Days Later star will play supervillain Malekith the Accursed in the upcoming Thor sequel — as Deadline’ s Mike Fleming reported Wednesday night — set the Twitter-verse reeling today. Late Thursday morning, Eccleston was trending on the social media site, thanks to, it appeared, the many contributions of Doctor Who fans everywhere. Eccleston was the first to play the impish Time Lord when the BBC rebooted the series in 2005. He was succeeded by David Tennant, which prompted @teaspoonofsugar to tweet, “Christopher Eccleston in Thor 2? Does this mean David Tennant will be in Thor 3?” Based on illustrations of Malekith, Eccleston — a dead ringer for Men at Work lead singer Colin Hay — will be donning a flowing white mane, large pointy ears and two-toned blue skin to play the leader of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim. (Say that three times fast without laughing.) His casting ups the probability that the Casket of Ancient Winters, which figured in the original Thor will make a return appearance in the sequel. In the Marvel comics series, Malekith used the Casket, which is capable of creating massive, brutal snowstorms, to bring Thor’s home, Asgard, to its knees. As Count Floyd would say, “Oooh, very, very scary!” The sequel, which will be directed by Alan Taylor ( Game of Thrones , Mad Men , Palookaville ), begins shooting in the U.K. later this month.

Avengers Blu-Ray Clip: Watch The Post-Credits Easter Egg

Heads up, fanboys and girls: Marvel has released a barrage of Avengers clips ahead of its September 25 Blu-ray/DVD street date, including the geek-baiting post-credits scene that had fans in a tizzy. No, not the one that boosted sales of shawarma around the nation ; the other Easter Egg, which revealed a menacing glimpse of the real orchestrator behind Loki’s invasion of Earth. The impending Blu-ray/DVD release has also given Marvel occasion to release a handful of additional clips from the film, reminding what life was like before The Dark Knight Rises came along and stole everyone’s thunder. I’d include a spoiler warning here, but if you’re reading this now and haven’t seen Avengers yet… well, I can’t help you there. The post-credits peek reveals Marvel baddie Thanos, who is believed to be the villain in the next Avengers pic. This might also be the closest we’ll come to another Hellboy sequel. (Kidding!) ‘Avengers’ Star Loves ‘Coulson Lives’ Theories

‘I would still have to be someone who could wisecrack,’ Clark Gregg tells MTV News about his future at Marvel. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kara Warner Clark Gregg Photo: MTV News Alas, poor Coulson — we knew him well. “Avengers” director Joss Whedon is known for killing off fan-favorite characters to heighten the stakes of his stories — we’re still pouring one out for Serenity flyboy Wash all these years later. In the Marvel superhero flick, it wasn’t one of Earth’s mightiest heroes who bit the bullet, but the much beloved S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson who lost his life at the hands of Asgardian bad boy Loki. Of course, this is a comic book property we’re talking about, and in comics, no one stays dead for long. That idea has kept Coulson fans feeling optimistic about the possible return of actor Clark Gregg to the Marvel movie universe at some point down the line, with his resurrection as popular character Vision the current leading theory. Speaking with MTV News in the lead-up to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday (June 3), Gregg opened up about returning to the Marvel universe as the Avengers’ resident android . “Vision is cool,” he said. “But I would hate to be any AI life form. If I got to come back, I would need to still be somebody who could wisecrack, because my favorite part of the job was that if anybody was going to tease anybody about their diva superhero outfit or whatever, it would be me.” Indeed, while Gregg has “seen a lot of theories” about Coulson’s return — “I love what people are doing with that,” he said — he’s just as happy to let his character rest in peace. “I really love what Joss did with Agent Coulson in ‘The Avengers,’ ” he said. “It seems like an idea that was in the cards, not only from Joss but from Marvel, in that you needed to ground the movie in some real emotion and stakes. I loved playing that guy, and I’ll miss playing him, but I was glad to have that job.” Coulson’s fate will remain a hotly debated topic for many weeks to come, we’re sure. But even if the hard-nosed S.H.I.E.L.D. agent is gone for good, that doesn’t mean Gregg can’t visit the set of “Avengers 2,” right? “That might be hard. I might be sad,” he said. Then again … “I guess I would [visit the set] if I was dressed up as a sentient android,” he teased. Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! Dark Shadows Slumps Behind History-Making Avengers

Johnny Depp wanted his and Tim Burton’s gothic vampire comedy Dark Shadows to be anything but Twilight . Mission accomplished, I suppose: The film fizzled into a very distant second place behind another jaw-dropping performance by The Avengers , which continued to rewrite the blockbuster history books in its second weekend. Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. The Avengers Gross: $103,163,000 ($373,182,000) Screens: 4,349 (PSA $23,721) Weeks: 2 (Change: -50.3%) This week in record-breaking: En route to the $1 billion threshold — which it reached Sunday — Disney’s superhero juggernaut stole the distinction of best second weekend ever from Avatar (whose own mark was $75.6 million) and experienced the best-ever second-weekend hold by a film that opened to more than $120 million. (We’ll no doubt get obscurer and obscurer as this thing rolls on.) It also became the fastest movie to reach $300 million and then $350 million domestically. Most observers conclude that a top-three all-time berth is likely on the domestic front — displacing The Dark Knight — but perhaps more mind-blowing is the likelihood of Joss Whedon’s film to rocket all the way to No. 4 all-time globally — behind Avatar, Titanic and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 — within the the next week . And it’s still got Tuvalu’s GDP beat . What can one say, other than, “Good luck, Battleship “? 2. Dark Shadows Gross: $28,805,000 (new) Screens: 3,755 (PSA: $7,671) Weeks: 1 The long-gestating Burton/Depp reimagining of the ’60s/’70s supernatural cult-soap darling performed pretty much as well as you might expect a long-gestating Burton/Depp reimagining of the ’60s/’70s supernatural cult-soap darling to perform: Soft — at least soft by Burton/Depp standards , which have been good for at least twice Dark Shadows ‘ opening two of the last three times they got together (2010’s Alice in Wonderland and 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ). Meanwhile, from atop its mountain of Avengers cash, Disney snickers knowingly in anticipation of the sixth installment of the lucrative Depp/Verbinski franchise it has on the way next summer in the way of The Lone Ranger AND the potential for Burton/Depp to rekindle their box-office fire with an Alice in Wonderland sequel. John Carter who ? 3. Think Like a Man Gross: $6,300,000 ($81,917,000) Screens: 2,052 (PSA $3,070) Weeks: 4 (Change: -22.3%) Meanwhile, how about that lucrative Tim Story/Taraji P. Henson partnership?! What? No? OK. 4. The Hunger Games Gross: $4,400,000 ($386,902,000) Screens: 2,531 (PSA $1,738) Weeks: 8 (Change: -21.3%) Gary Ross/Lenny Kravitz ? Ugh, fine . 5. Avengers Cookies: Your DIY Weekend Project

Just when you think you’ve had enough of this week’s Avengers hype , along comes perhaps the most irresistible bit of culture to date around the Marvel blockbuster: “Begin by outlining the cookie in your base color. (If you were starting with The Hulk, outline the entire shape in green. Color in your outline with green icing and cover the entire cookie. You can actually use a paintbrush to ‘paint’ your cookie.) Give the base a few minutes to dry and choose your next color. For The Hulk’s hair, outline his hairline in black and proceed to fill in with black icing. You can continue to draw features in and watch your character come to life.” Take that , Jollibee ! Find more kind of awesome Avengers party tips (DIY comic-book placemats!) here .
