Leave it to Tim Burton to make even the gruesomest scenarios utterly heart-wrenching; I started welling up during the first 30 seconds of the new trailer for Frankenweenie , the black and white stop-motion animation adaptation of Burton’s well-loved short of the same name. Watch it and shed a tear for the childhood pets you once loved. Frankenweenie is the tale of young Victor Frankenstein, who loses his beloved dog and best friend, Sparky, and then brings him back to life with science. The feature-length animation is adapted from Burton’s original Frankenweenie featurette , one of his early works and a live-action short that starred The NeverEnding Story ‘s Barret Oliver, Shelley Duvall, Daniel Stern, and a young Sofia Coppola. As lore tells it, Burton’s overlords at Disney were initially displeased with the 1984 Frankenweenie and fired him for making a movie that was too scary for kids; Burton went on to make his feature directorial debut on Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and subsequently made his name with the same macabre-yet-sweet sensibility that earned him the boot from Disney in the first place. Almost three decades later, Burton comes full circle with Frankenweenie and Disney, who hitched themselves to Burton with The Nightmare Before Christmas (released by Touchstone) and most recently enjoyed a megahit with his Alice in Wonderland . In a way, Burton himself prepped audiences to accept the kind of dark children’s storytelling in Frankenweenie with his previous films, so it all feels like poetic justice. “You dropped a — a condom on the red carpet,” asked esteemed Today Show journalists Matt Lauer of The Lorax star Zac Efron , grilling the former High School Musical tween idol about the red carpet incident that had the internet agog last week. “That was hard for you to say, wasn’t it?” returned Efron, who coolly answered with an unabashed confirmation. Let me reiterate: Yes, that was a gold condom that fluttered out of Efron’s pants pocket at the premiere of a Dr. Seuss movie. WHAT OF IT, LAUER?? Kudos to the 24-year-old Efron for coming out on top from the awkward televised inquiry. Ever the pro, he even found a way to bring it back to The Lorax , an animated tale about the dangers of greedy industrialism and deforestation: “It’s a great message to add to the many messages in the film.” (Just wait for those Fox anchors to get wind of this.) Which is more than I can say about Lauer’s subsequent off-the-cuff joke. “You’ve got your own production company — what’s next for you? That’s a bad pun, by the way… your own production company !” Groan. What, no segue riff into Efron’s next movie, The Lucky One ? COME ON, LAUER! At least someone learned a lesson from EfrondomGate; The totally safe sex-having actor says a “pocket-checking policy” will be “fully instated” for future red carpet appearances. On The Today Show this morning, Matt Lauer and Bill O’Reilly engaged in a fascinating debate. It stemmed from the latter’s belief that Whitney Houston had a death wish, that nobody abuses drugs or alcohol in such a way ” if they want to stay on the planet .” Lauer countered this point by saying “addiction is a disease,” but O’Reilly shot back: “It’s a mental disease. You have free will when it comes to addiction. You don’t have free will when it comes to lung cancer.” Matt Lauer Interviews Bill O’Reilly (Audio) The main topic of the discourse, though, centered on the media’s handling of Whitney’s long struggle with substance abuse, with O’Reilly labeling all reports over the years as “sensationalized to exploit the woman’s condition, not try to help her. “You know what we in the media do, Lauer?” he asked. “We wink-wink it. We Snoop Dogg it. We Willie Nelson it. ‘Hey, oh yeah, they’re stoned, that’s fine.'” Is O’Reilly in favor of lowering flags in New Jersey Saturday in honor of Houston’s funeral? Until now… Charlie Sheen will tell a Los Angeles judge his internet broadcast in which he threatened to cut children’s throat was a “piece of fiction” — and the hell-raising star is likening his new role to Hollywood’s controversial comic genius and raging boozer Lenny Bruce. “It’s a character in a piece of fiction,” Sheen told RadarOnline.com in an exclusive interview, when told his estranged wife Brooke Mueller is planning to introduce the two broadcasts into evidence as part of their child custody battle over 23-month-old twin sons Bob and Max. Lawyers for Sheen, 45, and Mueller, 33, are frantically negotiating a possible peace deal, in a desperate bid to to avert a court face-off on Tuesday morning. Mueller does not want Sheen to see their twin boys unsupervised, RadarOnline.com has been told. In a bizarre broadcast from his Sherman Oaks, California, home on Sunday night, Sheen was recorded telling his associate/Tweet master Bob Maron that he wanted to continue his stream-of-consciousness monologues during his new web series Sheen’s Korner, as opposed to the public access show format he broadcast the night before. For the past eight months, Serena Williams has been fighting to get her body back on the right track. She spoke with the Today Show via satellite to give an update on what exactly she has been dealing with and also speaks on her return to tennis: She recalled that on Feb. 18, “I had a lot of swelling in my leg, which really is a tell-tale sign of an embolism, and I could not breathe.” She just thought she “wasn’t fit,” but went to the emergency room. Doctors at first,couldn’t find anything, she said. But then one ordered a CAT scan of her lungs. “That’s when they found several blood clots. They told me they had to check me in immediately or it wasn’t going to be a good result.” A week later, she walked the red carpets at Oscar parties. “I had been through so much. I really was kind of low on energy,” she said, but wanted to “do something to get my spirits up. I wasn’t doing so well mentally. … I was feeling terrible.” So she went out. And wound up in the hospital the next day, Feb. 28, because of a large hematoma in her stomach. A hematoma is a gathering of blood underneath the skin, Lauer explained. “I’m on blood thinner injections. I inject myself twice a day,” she said. “I apparently must have hit something, … so what started out as a golf ball ended up being the size of a grapefruit.” At the hospital she was told it couldn’t be drained; it had to be surgically removed. Did this all stem from her initial foot problem after stepping on glass last year? She said, “Yes, and not moving and doing as much as I normally do and flying back and forth a lot.” What are doctors telling her now? “I’m just taking it one day at a time. My lungs are fairly healthy and I’m on the road to recovering.” She said she’s still hoping to return to tennis this summer. “I want to come back and be able to do well.” A speedy but mostly a healthy recovery is what we wish for Serena Williams.
