Matthew Leone has had a third of his skull removed to alleviate swelling on his brain. By James Montgomery Matthew Leone Photo: Steve Thorne/ Getty Images Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone is currently hospitalized, with a third of his skull removed to alleviate swelling on his brain, after he was badly beaten and left unconscious on the streets of Chicago. According to an entry posted Wednesday on the band’s blog , Leone — who is the twin brother of frontman Nathan Leone — attempted to intervene in a domestic disturbance earlier this week and was jumped from behind as he called the police. “A few nights ago, Matthew walked from my apartment, a block-and-a-half down the street to meet a friend for a drink,” Nathan Leone wrote in the post. “Halfway there he saw a man severely beating his wife. Being the most amazing, strong, heroic and incredible person I know — even though the guy was twice his size — Matthew intervened. He managed to subdue this guy for a second and since his wife was beat up pretty good called the cops. As he did, the guy jumped him from behind and beat him. This guy did things I can’t even type. [Afterward], he and his beaten wife left Matthew unconscious on the street. “Matthew is in the hospital with a third of his skull removed as we wait for the swelling in his brain to go down. I’d rather not share any additional information at this time besides the fact that he acted as a hero … and is paying a horrific price,” Leone’s post continued. “Pease send all your love and good energy and vibrations to him. I’ve been and will be next to him throughout the entire recovery process. We don’t know enough details yet about how that will develop. The world can be evil beyond belief and as much as we want this evil eliminated, right now our hearts, heads and energies need to go to my best friend, soulmate, hero and angel, Matthew.” There have been no further updates on Leone’s condition — an e-mail sent to the band’s booking agent was not responded to by press time. The band’s last studio album, Attics to Eden, was released in 2009 on Roadrunner Records. In May, Madina Lake announced they had parted ways with the label and were prepping an EP, titled The Dresden Codex, due this fall. Despite no longer working with the band, the folks at Roadrunner quickly responded to news of Leone’s situation. In an e-mail to MTV News, a publicist for the label wrote that “[Matthew] is such a sweet, lovable guy … [I’m] totally crushed to hear the news, and hoping and praying he pulls through this.”
