Ja Rule Court Date Set For August

The Queens rapper will face a judge on gun charge stemming back to 2007. By Mawuse Ziegbe Ja Rule Photo: Getty Images Rapper Ja Rule will head to court this summer to face a gun charge stemming back to 2007, according to The Associated Press. On Tuesday (June 8), a New York City judge set an August 18 trial date for Ja Rule , who was charged with criminal possession of a weapon three years ago. The Grammy-nominated hip-hop star was on New York’s Upper West Side, when the car he was riding in was stopped by police for speeding. Ja and two associates were subsequently charged with weapon possession after a .40-caliber Taurus pistol was found; the car’s registration had also been suspended. Ja Rule has pleaded not guilty and was not present on Tuesday. (The rapper, who is shooting a movie on location, was given permission to skip the court date.) The August court date comes after the judge denied Rule’s request for a hearing regarding DNA evidence. According to the New York Post , prosecutors claim that a miniscule amount of the hip-hop artist’s DNA was found on the handgun. However, Rule’s lawyer, Stacey Richman, has argued that the DNA sample is too tiny to provide reliable test results. Yet, the judge asserted the reliability of the DNA test methods, referencing a case in which the same DNA testing that Rule’s defense is contesting became instrumental in exonerating a defendant who spent four years in jail. The Post also reported that Richman will explore whether the judge might be willing to re-evaluate his decision regarding the DNA testing. Ja Rule was arrested on the same night as Lil Wayne , who is currently serving a yearlong jail sentence, after pleading guilty to felony gun possession in 2009. Justin Bieber ‘Didn’t Cry’ When He Got His Tattoo, Studio Owner Says

‘It was really cool to have him here,’ Brian Byrne tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe Brian Byrne, owner of Son of a Gun Tattoo and Barbershop Photo: MTV Canada Not even tough tattoo artists are immune to Justin Bieber’s charms. Brian Byrne, the co-owner of the Son of a Gun Tattoo and Barbershop where the pop phenom got inked back in March, said the Biebs is just as dreamy in person as any screaming fan would expect. “He’s kind of hard to miss. He’s pretty cute,” Byrne told MTV News. “He’s, like, super cute, actually. That hair, that smile, those clothes, those major-high high-tops,” Byrne joked. Byrne also revealed at that the star’s Jonathan Livingston Seagull tattoo has special meaning for Bieber. “From what I can gather, I guess a bunch of people in his family actually have that same tattoo, his dad included,” Byrne said. Bieber’s dad accompanied the heartthrob as he got his body art. Byrne said the ink session went smoothly and that Bieber handled it like a champ. “He was a super nice kid. He was nice in our shop, he didn’t cry or nothing like that. It went really well. It was really cool to have him here.” But for fans freaking out that Bieber might be too young to get tatted up, Byrne said it’s up to the shop owners to decide who does and doesn’t get ink. Son of a Gun only tattoos kids younger than 18 who have parental consent. Plus, the shop has some pretty strict rules so youngsters don’t get stuck with eternally lame tattoos. “Anybody who’s under 25 we won’t do hands and neck,” Byrne said. “[If] a 16-year-old kid comes in and wants, like, a pot leaf or something … forget it. I don’t care if you have your parents’ consent, you’re gonna regret it.” Byrne said Bieber’s tattoo was different because it was a family tradition and that the overall experience was positive. “It was all really done in a good, clean way,” Byrne said. Jay-Z Breaks Bread With Billionaires Mayor Bloomberg And Nets Owner

‘I share his passion for Brooklyn,’ Mikhail Prokhorov says of NBA partner Hov at Gracie Mansion, according to the New York Post. By Mawuse Ziegbe New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Jay-Z share breakfast Photo: Chris Hondros/Getty Images Jay-Z is known for doing things big, but nothing says baller status like sharing breakfast with two billionaires, which is just what the Jiggaman did Wednesday morning in New York. The MC and minority owner of the New Jersey Nets noshed on bagels with media mogul/ major of New York City Michael Bloomberg and the new majority Nets owner, Mikhail Prokhorov, at Gracie Mansion (traditionally the mayor’s official residence though Bloomberg doesn’t live there). Prokhorov spent the rest of the day on a tour of the city, which included a stop in Jay-Z’s native Brooklyn, where the Nets plan to move in two years. While the European tycoon has made his multibillion dollar fortune in the banking and mining industries, Prokhorov clearly has his ear to the streets and revealed his respect for Jigga. According to the New York Daily News, Prokhorov gushed about his fellow Nets owner: “We are soul mates.” And there may be more power breakfasts in store for Hov and Prokhorov as the billionaire added, “I’m looking forward to hanging out with him.” While Prokhorov was aware that he and Jay-Z make something of an odd pairing, he insisted the connection between the two moguls is deeper than rap. “Despite the fact that I am very far from the rap music, we have a lot in common,” Prokhorov said, according to the New York Post. Plus, the two power brokers do have one important thing in common: “I share his passion for Brooklyn,” Prokhorov said. Are you surprised to hear Jay-Z is breaking bread with billionaires? Tupac’s Mom, Afeni Shakur, Arrested For Drug Possession

She is due back in court in May to face three drug charges. By Mawuse Ziegbe Afeni Shakur-Davis Photo: Annette Brown/ Getty Images Afeni Shakur, the activist mother of late hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur, was arrested for felony drug possession in Lumberton, North Carolina, earlier this month. According to The Fayetteville Observer, the ex-Black Panther was charged April 16 with felony possession of marijuana, simple possession of a controlled substance and maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance. Reps for Afeni and Lumberton Police had not responded MTV News’ requests for comment at press time. Since her son was fatally shot in 1996, Afeni has stayed busy upholding his legacy. She founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation in 1997, which provides arts and education programs for young people and mounts an annual performing-arts summer camp for youth from troubled homes. Afeni’s Amaru Entertainment was engaged in a legal battle with film company Morgan Creek last year over a movie about the rapper’s life, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Afeni has also managed music from Tupac that was unreleased while the star was alive. Afeni’s battle with drug use is mentioned in Tupac’s hit 1995 song “Dear Mama.” When renovating the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation’s center in 2005, Afeni told MTV News that her tough past was a catalyst for starting an arts foundation. “When Tupac was 13 and I was homeless,” she said, “Tupac was in the 127th Street Ensemble [theater group] right here in New York. Those people, I believe, saved his life. So what we try to do is be that for the next generation of young people.” The Observer reports that bail was set at $10,000, and Afeni is currently out on bond, according to court reports. She is due back in Robeson County District Court on May 10. Related Artists Tupac
