Not All Heroes Wear Capes: Compton Mayor Aja Brown To Run Against Stacey Dash For California Congress

Image via Astrid Stawiarz/Robin L Marshall/Getty Compton Mayor Aja Brown To Run Against Stacey Dash For Congress Last week we reported that bum azz Stacey Dash will be running for California Congress in the 44th district. However, she will not run unopposed, in fact, the clueless soup cookie sympathizer will have to defeat one of the most popular politicians in the state. According to TMZ , Compton’s mayor Aja Brown has decided to throw her name in the hat in order to keep Stacey from destroying some of the most beloved areas in SoCal like Compton, Watts, North Long Beach and San Pedro. Brown is the polar opposite of Dash in every way imaginable. She’s a Black woman, she embraces hip-hop culture (gave Kendrick Lamar key to the city) and she has real ties to the community as her mother was raised in Compton. It is reported that Brown had no interest in Congress until Stacey announced her plan to run. Subsequently, a flood of phone calls came into her office urging her to oppose Dame Dash’s cousin. A private source says that Aja believes that Stacey is “running for notoriety”. Stacey is in big trouble. Continue reading

Who Is Nikuyah Walker? Charlottesville Elects First Black Female Mayor

Original post:

A historic election in Charlottesville has ended with the victory of an African-American woman. The Virginia city named native  Nikuyah Walker as its new leader Tuesday night months after  white nationalist rallies plunged the area into deadly chaos, The Associated Press  reported. Charlottesville City Council members approved Walker’s appointment by a  4-1 vote. Walker, an outspoken critic of local leaders’ response to the “Unite the Right” rally who was sworn into office as a council member on December 29, has a positive outlook on the new position, largely a part-time job presiding over council meetings. The mom of three, who holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Virginia Commonwealth University, is ready for the new role. “I never looked at it as, I’m above anyone else … there are just a few additional duties and whatever they are I will figure them out,” Walker, the first independent candidate elected to the council since 1948, said. She also took to Twitter after her win: “We made history last night and then we got to work. # MayorNikuyahWalker # Charlottesville.”  We made history last night and then we got to work. #MayorNikuyahWalker #Charlottesville pic.twitter.com/CJIpoPKFMz — Mayor Nikuyah Walker (@NikuyahWalkerCC) January 3, 2018 Walker, who replaced mayor Mike Signer  after calling for his resignation, was one of two new council members elected in November.  Heather Hill  was selected for vice mayor Tuesday night, according to NBC 29 . The newly elected mayor, who works for Charlottesville Parks and Recreation as well as is a social and racial justice advocate with nonprofit experience, wants to change how City Council meetings are run. Walker spoke about changing the amount of time people are allowed to speak and ensuring everyone is heard during those meetings. She was also candid about the job of mayor being a challenge. She learned a lot from running a campaign, she said, and vowed to keep going and put people first, C-Ville reported. Dozens of Black folks,  including prominent activists and public figures, are supporting  Walker all over social media. Nikuyah Walker becomes first Black woman mayor of #Charlottesville , VA. Black Monuments Stolen After Town Elects First African-American Mayor

More here:

T wo Black history monuments were recently stolen from a park in rural Arkansas just days after the first African-American mayor took office, Arkansas Matters reported. A wooden placard bearing Dr. Maya Angelou ‘s name and a bronze bust honoring three Black men who served in the state legislature after the Civil War were taken from the town of Stamps over the weekend. It was not immediately clear whether the theft at Maya Angelou Memorial Park was racially motivated, said Mayor Brenda Davis . The incidents came at a time when protesters have called for the removal of Confederate monuments in several states. The town expected to replace the monuments, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette  reported. It makes you wonder, but I wouldn’t speculate.” The bust alone was worth roughly $2,500, according to Davis. Though Davis was unsure whether race placed a part in the theft, it looked as if it was racially motivated, said Lexi Fuller , a lifelong Stamps resident who lives across the street from the park from where the monuments were taken. “As soon as she got elected, it happened,” Fuller said. “It’s just not right at all.” Though the matter is quite serious, Davis, who is serving the unexpired term of Mayor David Ray Bright ending in December 2018, will not let it stop her from improving Stamps. “Replacing it, moving on,” Davis said. “Not letting this get the best of us.” The Arkansas Historic Commission has agreed to replace the stolen bust by January 2018. No word yet on plans to replace the Angelou placard. Wonder Woman: Misogynist Hater ROASTED by Austin Mayor Steve Adler!

Have you seen Wonder Woman yet? I have. It was great. A friend cried during it. The audience applauded at the end. But the film’s release hasn’t been a stranger to controversy. One particularly hateful response to a women-only screening got an epic smack-down by none other than the mayor of Austin, Texas. Yeah, usually mayors don’t get a lot of attention for talking about superhero movies, and Mayor Steve Adler isn’t really an exception. He’s talking about sexism and human dignity. The controversy wasn’t so much about Wonder Woman itself, but about one theater’s decision to host a women-only screening, and one of the men who absolutely flipped out about it. In case it actually needs to be stated, like, men-only screenings of films aren’t uncommon. Also plenty of bars still have “Ladies Night” and that sort of thing.  It’s a little weird, sure, though we can totally understand why some women would want to see the film in the absence of guys like whatever piece of work wrote this horrifying email to Austin’s mayor. “The notion of a woman hero is a fine example of women’s eagerness to accept the appearance of achievement without actual achievement. “Women learn from an early age to value make-up, that it’s OK to pretend that you are greater than you actually are,” he writes, only after hoping for Austin’s defamation and accusing the theater of “sexism.” All superheroes are pretend, not just the lady ones. The makeup comment is so weird that we don’t even know how to respond except to say that clearly this guy doesn’t ever do anything to improve his appearance. “Women pretend they do not know that only men serve in combat because they are content to have an easier ride. Women gladly accept gold medals at the Olympics for coming in 10th and competing only against the second class of athletes,” he says as if he isn’t the wrongest person to ever live. “Name something invented by a woman! Achievements by the second rate gender pale in comparison to virtually everything great in human history was accomplished by men, not women,” he continued, just keeping on digging that hole. The short version of all of this is that a man who despises women claims that he doesn’t. He then signs his name, Richard A. Ameduri, because that’s totally a letter where you’d want to include your name. Steve Adler’s letter in response is all kinds of savage. “I am writing to alert you that your email account has been hacked by an unfortunate and unusually hostile individual,” he begins. “Please remedy your account’s security right away, lest this person’s uninformed and sexist rantings give you a bad name. After all, we men have to look out for each other!” That’s tongue-in-cheek and beautiful, right? Then he dives in and just begins solidly refuting the vile man’s sexist claims. “Can you imagine if someone thought that you didn’t know women could serve in our combat units now without exclusion?” he asked. You can feel the sarcasm emanating in waves from the screen. Remember that claim that women never invented anything? Adler sure did . “What if someone thought you didn’t know that women invented medical syringes, life rafts, fire escapes, central and solar heating, a war-time communications system for radio-controlling torpedoes that laid the technological foundations for everything from Wi-Fi to GPS, and beer?” A nicely succinct list. Which of course could have been longer. He also took the time to remind the whiner that a private business can hold whatever screenings they like. “And I hesitate to imagine,” he adds. “How embarrassed you’d be if someone thought you were upset that a private business was realizing a business opportunity by reserving one screening this weekend for women to see a superhero movie.” Savage . We love seeing intelligent politicians go off on people who deserve it. And speaking of things getting what they deserve, Wonder Woman is already a hit at the box office after only Thursday night’s early previews. We can’t wait to see what kind of numbers she rakes in by the end of the weekend.
