Axl Rose Isn’t First To Blast Rock And Roll Hall of Fame

Black Sabbath, Kiss and the Sex Pistols have also blasted the institution. By Gil Kaufman Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose Photo: Getty Images Suffice it to say that in his lengthy, lawyerly letter to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this week refusing his induction
as part of the classic line-up of Guns N’ Roses , singer Axl Rose had a bone (or two, or six or 20) to pick with the process. It’s hard to say who the enigmatic hard-rock icon was most mad at, but his steadfast refusal to attend the induction, or even acknowledge the honor, put him in a long tradition of rock legends who’ve either bashed the RRHOF for not including them (only to change their tune once their number came up) or refused to show up , not to mention the fans who’ve raised holy hell when their favorite bands couldn’t make the cut. MTV News’ James Montgomery penned his own open letter to Axl and the group’s fans.
Among the other hell-raisers: Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath : Before the group got the call in 2005
, the Blizzard of Ozz had been very vocal about how little he wanted to do with the Hall. In a 1999 letter to the Hall of Fame, Ozzy famously told the institution, “Just take our name off the list. Save the ink. Forget about us. The nomination is meaningless, because it’s not voted on by the fans. It’s voted on by the supposed elite for the industry and the media, who’ve never bought an album or concert ticket in their lives, so their vote is irrelevant to me.” He added, “Let’s face it, Black Sabbath has never been media darlings. We’re a people’s band and that suits us just fine.” John Lydon/Sex Pistols : Lydon (aka “Johnny Rotten”) was his typical snotty self when his pioneering punk band made the short list in 2006. In a cheeky letter, the perennially put out Lydon wrote, “Next to the Sex Pistols rock and roll and that hall of fame is a piss stain. Your museum. Urine in wine. We’re not coming. We’re not your monkey and so what?” Needless to say, the band did not show up for the ceremony. Gene Simmons/Kiss : The kabuki theater bass player is never at a loss for words. And nothing makes him angrier than the fact that the “greatest band in the world” has never been invited to the party. He’s lashed out at the Rock Hall repeatedly in the 12 years since his group became eligible. “There are disco bands, rap bands, Yiddish folk song bands, but not Kiss,” he said in 2008. David Lee Roth/Eddie Van Halen/Van Halen : The longest-running soap opera in rock was kicked up a notch in 2007 when VH was slated for induction. Original singer Roth had been rehearsing for the event and speculation swirled for months about who would show up and if replacement singer Sammy Hagar would be on hand as well. Then, in classic VH fashion, Eddie and Dave both bailed and it was left to Hagar and now-former bassist Michael Anthony to accept on the band’s behalf. And then there are the fans. In addition to the unending volley of complaints from the Kiss Army, followers of Canadian prog rockers Rush have been bellyaching for the past decade of the band’s eligibility that the wizardly trio deserve their spot in the Hall. They’ve picketed, launched petitions and all but drawn their broadswords and threatened to storm the I.M. Pei-designed glass pyramid in Cleveland to rectify this grave injustice. All to no avail. Are you disappointed that Axl Rose won’t be at this weekend’s Hall of Fame ceremony? Let us know in comments below. Related Artists Guns N’ Roses Black Sabbath

Meek Mill – Faded Too Long Video

Nadya Suleman Decries Death Threats, Vandalism

Nadya Suleman is opening up about the recent death threats and violence – some moron smashing her car window – she’s encountered since going on welfare. Nadya talked to E! News about the other night, when she started hearing some unusual noises outside of her home, but decided not call the police. “I was jet-lagged and tired,” Octomom says. “But I felt something was wrong. I was pretty scared, so I checked on the kids, checked the front of the house.” “Morning came and neighbors came while I was cooking. They said, ‘Your car window is all smashed .’ It dawned on me that was what I had heard.” “I’m blessed with those neighbors who told me. They look out for us.” When she went to investigate the damage, she didn’t even notice a strange note at first: “I didn’t notice any paper until my daughter found it,” she says. Nadya guesses that someone smashed the window and threw the paper, containing a threatening message, inside, as part of a “never-ending cycle.” Surprisingly, Octomom didn’t want to file a police report because she hoped to maintain her privacy, something she’s never held dear in the past. “I can’t stand the media attention and wanted to make everything private,” Nadya insists. “My manager told me to report it. My dad reported it.” Suleman doesn’t know who is responsible for the vandalism or rash of recent death threats and won’t “make assumptions” or “blame any group.” She adds that, “It wasn’t just hate mail, it was a death threat.” The mother of 14 notes that where she currently lives is a “nightmare” and there is “bad energy everywhere” since news that she went on welfare . Even though Suleman is under the public eye, she insists, “I’m no one special. Everyone has their own special story and survival and strength.” “I don’t need this. I’m transparent and I have nothing to hide. I’m not ashamed of anything. Not with my children, no shame. At the end of the day, if you know who you are and you answer to God you’re a good person, that’s all the matters.” While ashamed of having to go on public assistance, Nadya says she mostly feels bad for the people who have so much negativity in their souls. “I can complain … who wouldn’t. At this point, I am done. I am done with the complaining. I feel sorry for them,” Suleman says of those who hate her. “If I reciprocate hate, I’m feeding them power. I need to give that to my children. I am teaching my children to give power to yourself and God.” “I just learned to 100% train myself to be totally indifferent. If I get caught up in their misery, I go down to their misery and I go down to their level.” As for the vandal, Suleman says, “If I met the person who did this and I talked to them for a minute or two, they’d realize I’m human and I have feelings.”

BREAKING: Citing Scheduling Constraints, Gary Ross Officially Not Directing Hunger Games Sequel

Well, that was fast: Just hours after Josh Hutcherson gamely threw his support behind Hunger Games director Gary Ross , Ross has officially announced he’s not directing the franchise sequel, Catching Fire . “I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make,” wrote Ross in a statement. More after the jump. Whatever happened behind the scenes, Ross and Lionsgate’s joint statements make a point to emphasize that not directing Catching Fire was Ross’s decision, not the studio’s — a nicety that conveys good terms whether or not tough negotiations over salary and the like were had. Similar sentiments were expressed back in 2008 when, after opening the first Twilight film at number 1 on the way to a $392 million global take, director Catherine Hardwicke and Summit parted ways. Back then, the reason given was that Hardwicke’s desired amount of time to properly develop the sequel was longer than what the studio wanted to allot. “I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct New Moon ,” Hardwicke said in December 2008 . “Directing Twilight has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel — it is a great story. Compare that with Ross’s statement and let the wild speculation roll as to why Ross is truly out — and, more importantly, who’ll step in to fill his director’s chair on the rapidly approaching Catching Fire , said to be slated to begin filming as early as this August. Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct Catching Fire . As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule. I loved making The Hunger Games – it was the happiest experience of my professional life. Lionsgate was supportive of me in a manner that few directors ever experience in a franchise: they empowered me to make the film I wanted to make and backed the movie in a way that requires no explanation beyond the remarkable results. And contrary to what has been reported, negotiations with Lionsgate have not been problematic. They have also been very understanding of me through this difficult decision. I also cannot say enough about the people I worked with: Producer Nina Jacobson, a great collaborator and a true friend; the brilliant Suzanne Collins, who entrusted us with her most amazing and important story; the gifted and remarkable Jennifer Lawrence whose performance exceeded my wildest expectations, and the rest of the incredible cast, whom I am proud to call my friends. To the fans I want to say thank you for your support your faith, your enthusiasm and your trust. Hard as this may be to understand I am trying to keep that trust with you. Thank you all. It’s been a wonderful experience. Statement from Lionsgate: We’re very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct Catching Fire . We were really looking forward to making the movie with him. He did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work. This will not be the end of our relationship, as we consider Ross to be part of the Lionsgate family and look forward to working with him in the future. [via Deadline ]

‘Hunger Games’ Director Gary Ross Out For Sequel

‘After difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct ‘Catching Fire,’ ‘ Ross says in a statement. By Katie Byrne and Kara Warner Gary Ross Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ Getty Images A roller-coaster week for “The Hunger Games” just got even bumpier: Director Gary Ross has officially announced he won’t direct the sequel, “Catching Fire.” The week began positively enough, with “The Hunger Games” topping the box office for the third weekend in a row, earning nearly $303 million since its debut. But that news was quickly followed Monday with a surprising Playlist story claiming Ross wouldn’t return for the movie adaptation of “Catching Fire,” a report that has now been confirmed via statements from Ross himself and “Games” studio Lionsgate. “Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct ‘Catching Fire,’ ” Ross said in his statement. “As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule. “I loved making ‘The Hunger Games’ — it was the happiest experience of my professional life,” the statement continued. “Lionsgate was supportive of me in a manner that few directors ever experience in a franchise: they empowered me to make the film I wanted to make and backed the movie in a way that requires no explanation beyond the remarkable results. And contrary to what has been reported, negotiations with Lionsgate have not been problematic. They have also been very understanding of me through this difficult decision.” Lionsgate echoed Ross’ disappointment in the ended “Games” partnership: “We’re very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct Catching Fire. We were really looking forward to making the movie with him. He did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work. This will not be the end of our relationship, as we consider Ross to be part of the Lionsgate family and look forward to working with him in the future.” Ross’ heartfelt sentiments did not end with his thanks to the studio. “I also cannot say enough about the people I worked with: Producer Nina Jacobson, a great collaborator and a true friend; the brilliant Suzanne Collins, who entrusted us with her most amazing and important story; the gifted and remarkable Jennifer Lawrence whose performance exceeded my wildest expectations, and the rest of the incredible cast, whom I am proud to call my friends,” he added in his statement. “To the fans I want to say thank you for your support your faith, your enthusiasm and your trust. Hard as this may be to understand I am trying to keep that trust with you. Thank you all. It’s been a wonderful experience.” There will likely be a long list of directors gunning to fill Ross’ shoes, but until we receive word of an official list of names, we have a very well-thought-out list of our own we hope Lionsgate considers. Thomas Kinkade, Popular Artist, Passes Away at 54

Thomas Kinkade, the acclaimed “Painter of Light” and one of the most popular artists in America, died suddenly Friday in his California home. He was 54. His family said Kinkade’s death appeared to be from natural causes. “Thom provided such a wonderful life for his family,” his wife, Nanette, said in a statement earlier today. “We are shocked and saddened by his death.” His paintings are hanging in an estimated one of every 20 homes in the United States, with fans warming to the familiar feeling of his mass-produced works of art. Art critics often dismissed his work as tacky, but his prints of idyllic cottages and bucolic garden gates helped establish a brand are uncommonly in the art world. “I’m a warrior for light,” Kinkade, famed for his style of painted highlights, told the San Jose Mercury-News in 2002, alluding not just to his skill, but his approach. To Kinkade, light was used to symbolize the divine. “With whatever talent and resources I have, I try to bring light to penetrate the darkness many people feel.” He clearly reached a lot of people. His Media Arts Group company is said to have taken in up to $32 million per quarter from 4,500 dealers across the country.

For Discussion: Should Marine Who Criticized President Barack Obama On His Facebook Page Be Dismissed???

Marine To Be Dismissed After Criticizing Obama On Facebook A Marine who criticized President Barack Obama on his Facebook page has committed misconduct and should be dismissed, a military board recommended late Thursday. The Marine Corps administrative board made the decision after a daylong hearing at Camp Pendleton for Sgt. Gary Stein. The board also recommended that Stein be given an other-then-honorable discharge. That would mean Stein would lose his benefits and would not be allowed on any military base. The board’s recommendations go to a general who will either accept or deny them. If the general disagrees with the board, the case could go to the secretary of the Navy. Stein’s lawyers argued that the 9-year Marine, whose service was to end in four months, was expressing his personal views and exercising his First Amendment rights. “We’re truly surprised and disappointed but it was an honor to fight for a hero like Sgt. Stein and every other Marine’s right to speak freely,” Stein’s defense attorney Marine Capt. James Baehr said. During the hearing, the prosecutor, Capt. John Torresala, said Stein went as far as superimposing images of Obama’s face on a poster for the movie “Jackass.” Torresala argued that Stein’s behavior repeatedly violated Pentagon policy that limits the free speech rights of service members, and said he should be dismissed after ignoring warnings from his superiors about his postings. The government submitted screen grabs of Stein’s postings on one Facebook page he created called Armed Forces Tea Party, which the prosecutor said included the image of Obama on the “Jackass” movie poster. Stein also superimposed Obama’s image on a poster for “The Incredibles” movie that he changed to “The Horribles,” the prosecutor said. Torresala also said anti-Obama comments by Stein that were posted on a Facebook page used by Marine meteorologists were prejudicial to good order and discipline, and could have influenced junior Marines. Stein’s security clearance was taken away and he has no future in the Marine Corps because he can’t do his job without that clearance, Torresala said. “The Marine Corps community views the command’s lack of action as some kind of knock on good order and discipline,” Torresala said. “Our own people are questioning why this Marine is not being held accountable.” Stein has said his opinions are his own and has put a disclaimer on his Facebook page saying so. His attorneys argued service members have a right to voice their opinions as long as they do not appear to be presenting their views as being endorsed by the military. They say the Pentagon policy is vague and military officials do not understand it. The Marine Corps has said it decided to take administrative action after Stein declared on Facebook that he would not follow orders from Obama and later clarified that statement saying he would not follow unlawful orders. Stein could face other-than-honorable discharge while seeing his rank reduced to lance corporal and losing his benefits. The nine-year veteran was set to finish his service in four months. He said he was removed from his job at the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot in San Diego last month and given a desk job with no access to computers. Stein said his statement about Obama was part of an online debate about NATO allowing U.S. troops to be tried for the Quran burnings in Afghanistan. In that context, he said, he was stating that he would not follow orders from the president if it involved detaining U.S. citizens, disarming them or doing anything else that he believes would violate their constitutional rights. Random Ridiculousness: Small Town In Wyoming With One Resident Sold To Vietnamese Man For $900,000

Small Town Sold For $900,000 Buford is a small place for sure, but so is the world. A remote, unincorporated area along busy Interstate 80 that advertised itself as the smallest town in the United States, Buford was sold at auction for $900,000 on Thursday to an unidentified man from Vietnam. It’s owner for the last 20 years, Don Sammons, served with the U.S. Army as a radio operator in 1968-69. After meeting the buyer, an emotional Sammons said it was hard for him to grasp the irony of the situation. “I think it’s funny how things come full circle,” he said. The buyer attended the auction in person but declined to meet with the media or to be identified. Sammons and others involved in the auction would not discuss the buyer’s plans for Buford. It will take about 30 days for all the paperwork to be completed before ownership of the place located almost equidistant between Cheyenne and Laramie in southeast Wyoming changes hands, Sammons said. The new owner will get a gas station and convenience store, a schoolhouse from 1905, a cabin, a garage, 10 acres, and a three-bedroom home at 8,000 feet altitude — overlooking the trucks and cars on the nearby interstate on one side and the distant snowcapped mountains in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado on the other. The town traces its origins to the 1860s and the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. Buford had as many as 2,000 residents before the railroad was rerouted. Sammons, who moved to the Buford area about 30 years ago from Los Angeles to get away from the busy city life, bought the trading post on Jan. 31, 1992. He plans to retire from his unofficial title as “mayor” and write a book about his experiences in Buford, he said. Interesting… Source More On Bossip! Trayvon Martin 911 Call Controversy: NBC Apologizes For Editing George Zimmerman Recording

A version of the 911 tape of George Zimmerman reporting suspicious behavior by Trayvon Martin before killing him was edited, NBC admitted this week. It wasn’t doctored – his words were left intact – but it’s what we didn’t hear that sheds light on the ultimately fatal Martin-Zimmerman confrontation. On March 27, NBC’s Today Show aired Zimmerman’s call to the police, featuring these words: “This guy looks like he’s up to no good … he looks black.” The recording went viral, no doubt shaping public bias against Zimmerman . But it turns out Today shortened, and thus altered the meaning of, the call: Trayvon Martin 911 Call Here is the fuller version of the recording:

What Ryan Seacrest’s ‘Today’ Reveal Means For Tomorrow

‘American Idol’ host is setting himself up for a long career and (eventually) the ‘Today’ anchor job with new NBC gig. By John Mitchell Ryan Seacrest Photo: Getty Images This morning on “Today,” Ryan Seacrest confirmed a few rumors and shot down a few others. The “American Idol” and “E! News” host and reality-TV mogul announced that he was officially joining the NBC team, beginning with its prime-time coverage of the London Olympics this summer, and that he would continue on as host of “Idol” while scaling back his on-air work at E! “I’ve worked with the E! network for years, and NBC Universal and E! are in the same family. The plan is for me to join the NBC family and continue to have a role on the E! network,” Seacrest told “Today” anchor Matt Lauer. “The first assignment for me will be with the prime-time team at the Olympics on NBC.” After establishing what he would be doing, Seacrest and Lauer continued through an awkward conversation about what he would not be doing, at least not just yet: gunning to take over Lauer’s anchor job on “Today” when his contract expires later this year. “I see you doing this as long as you want to,” Seacrest said to Lauer when pressed about his rumored negotiations with “Today” producers. “So the question is: How long will you be on the ‘Today’ show?” “We have talked about this, joked about this,” Lauer continued. “There is no tension here.” With Lauer’s future with “Today” still in question, Seacrest’s arrival at NBC brings with it some major implications. Here are the top three: Seacrest Is Being Primed to Replace Lauer During their back-and-forth over whether he’d been approached to replace Lauer, Seacrest played coy, joking that his conversations with “Today” producers “were mostly about filling in to do weather.” He never explicitly denied that he was in talks to host, making the subtext of the conversation pretty clear: the anchor job at “Today” remains Lauer’s as long as he wants it, but Seacrest is largely being brought onboard to wait in the wings and learn the ropes. Lauer is reportedly deep in tough negotiations with “Today” and NBC to remain on the program, and the consensus opinion seems to be that the network is looking to do whatever it takes, including meeting his reported $25 million salary demand, to keep him for the near future. That’s a lot of money, but the “Today” show is a cash cow — generating $450 million in ad revenue in 2010, according to New York magazine — and the net sees Lauer as integral to keeping “Today” on top. Lauer provides the stability that is key to success in morning news and is a master at mixing the serious and the silly, which is important when your job is to both report on the war in Afghanistan and later interview a “Toddlers & Tiaras” pageant mother. Seacrest already has the lighthearted side of things down, but he needs to bulk up his bona fides as a credible journalist. Don’t be surprised if, following his coverage of the Olympics, the various NBC News properties (“Today” included) take him on as a correspondent to cover some serious stuff. They are going to groom him to be a TV news Renaissance man, just like Matt Lauer. Seacrest Poses More of a Threat to the “Today” Ladies Seacrest’s appearance on “Today” pretty much changed the question from “will he” to ” when will he” join the “Today” team and in what capacity. But if they are grooming him to replace Lauer eventually, it will disrupt the chain of succession at “Today.” When Katie Couric left the show, Lauer stepped into the alpha anchor chair, after years of paying his dues as newsreader and co-anchor. Anne Curry would rightfully assume that position if Lauer left, but many have commented that she has had a “rocky transition to her new role” as co-anchor since Meredith Vieira’s departure. Seacrest’s hiring makes it seem like NBC execs are stacking the deck — and not in Savannah Guthrie’s or Curry’s favor. If the “Idol” host leapfrogs Curry somewhere down the road for the lead anchor chair, it will also keep Guthrie from ascending through the ranks the way her colleagues have before her. “Today” won’t demote Curry in any way — and, to be fair, she hasn’t been all that bad — but the lukewarm reception she’s received makes it unlikely she’ll ever be made lead anchor either. Guthrie, however, has more to worry about. She often steps in when Curry or Lauer are out, and if Seacrest is being groomed for Lauer’s spot, producers may opt to have him step up where she normally would. Seacrest Isn’t Going Anywhere Anytime Soon With his plans to continue on as host of “American Idol” and keep his thriving reality-show empire alive on E!, Seacrest will become an even more powerful media figure after he joins NBC. He has his fingers in just about every genre of television except serious news, and that’s essentially what NBC is offering him. In so doing, it also secures his place in the most stable arena in the media canon. The popularity of reality TV ebbs and flows — remember that “Survivor” and “American Idol” were once the top shows on television and now regularly attract only half the audience they did at their peak — so staking your career to it is kind of like building a house on sand. Seacrest has become a mogul by seizing on zeitgeist — “Idol,” the “Kardashian” franchise he built as a producer, his red-carpet work with E! — but he’s also a 37-year-old man who knows the things that have brought him so much success will eventually fade away. But the news never goes out of style. By getting in good with NBC, Seacrest also secures himself the long-term broadcast career he may have otherwise missed out on had he hedged his bets entirely on “Idol” and his reality-TV empire. For a little perspective, the “Today” show has been on the air since 1952 and is the fourth-longest-running television series ever, behind only “Meet the Press,” “The CBS Evening News” and “Hallmark Hall of Fame.” “American Idol” is puttering along with series-low ratings in its 11th season. So what Ryan Seacrest was really announcing this morning on “Today” was his next chapter. Sure, the timeframes haven’t been set and the ink isn’t entirely dry, but his decision to join NBC as an on-air player marks the transition to a new career. It may resemble the old one, but make no mistake: We are being primed for Ryan Seacrest: News Man. What do you think of Seacrest’s announcement? Let us know in the comments!
