Tell Google: Don’t be evil.

“Google's motto is 'Don't be evil,' but Google is about to cut a deal with Verizon that would end the Internet as we know it. According to a front-page New York Times story, the deal would allow 'Verizon to speed some online content to Internet users more quickly if the content's creators are willing to pay for the privilege.' It would create fast Internet lanes for the largest corporations and slow lanes for the rest of us.” Please, sign the petition and don't let these corporations monopolize the information. Most news media are already biased and controlled by big corporations (link below). Internet is the only door left open to everyone, rich and poor, to voice a story, without discrimination, offering freedom of expression, diversity, and at times, the opportunity to leak important truths. http://www.change.org/credoaction/petitions/view/tell_google_dont_be_evil Here is a great link showing who owns the media: http://www.freepress.net/ownership/chart/main “Select a chart: The Big Six – Cable – TV – Print – Telecom – Radio ” “GENERAL ELECTRIC: 2009 revenues: $157 billion General Electric media-related holdings include television networks NBC and Telemundo, Universal Pictures, Focus Features, 26 television stations in the United States and cable networks MSNBC, Bravo and the Sci Fi Channel. Chris Matthews Show: Hillary Should Replace Biden to Help Obama’s Re-election

The panel of the syndicated “Chris Matthews Show” this weekend campaigned for Hillary Clinton to replace Joe Biden as Vice President in order to assist Barack Obama’s re-election in 2012 and set her up for a successful presidential bid in 2016.  As NewsBusters reported Wednesday, Chris Matthews on that evening’s “Hardball” had former Virginia governor Doug Wilder and New York magazine’s John Heilemann on to discuss the merits of this strategy. The “Hardball” host must have found this quite compelling, for he decided to do an entire segment on his weekend program with guests Erin Burnett of CNBC, Norah O’Donnell of NBC, Howard Fineman of Newsweek, and Heilemann. After playing a clip from Wednesday’s “Hardball,” as well as a video of Clinton in 2009 saying she’d never run for president again, Matthews and his panel started the campaigning (videos follow with commentary): Readers are advised to notice a couple of interesting things in this video. First, panelists talked about what a great job Clinton’s doing as Secretary of State, yet no one elaborated on exactly what she’s done in the past eighteen months in this capacity that’s been so spectacular. Are relations with Iran any better? No. Are relations with Syria any better? No.  Are relations with North Korea any better? No. Are relations with Cuba or Venezuela any better? No. Has there been any improvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? No. As such, what exactly has Clinton done as Secretary of State that warrants such praise for her job performance?  As the answer appears to be “Very little,” the takeaway to all this unwarranted Hillary fawning is that her adoring fans in the media clearly would like to see her run in 2016, and that they are now participating in a makeover to facilitate that end. On the other hand, what does this say about their confidence in Obama? If these folks believe that he needs some help from Hillary to win re-election, isn’t that a bash at him? Consider that in a subsequent segment, Matthews asked if Obama’s young age – which was a benefit in 2008 – might hurt him in 2012. Heilemann felt it would:  JOHN HEILEMANN, NEW YORK MAGAZINE: I think the Republican attack on Obama is going to revolve around too liberal, but also too incompetent. And, and the inexperience that, that I think Republicans will try to hang around his neck, they’re going to say, “Look, you hired this guy. He was too young for this job. He didn’t know what he was doing. He didn’t have the experience, and look what’s happened.” Indeed. Of course, this is what the Clintons were saying in 2008 along with John McCain, Sarah Palin, and all those that opposed Obama’s election for exactly this reason. Now that it’s becoming apparent that this former junior senator from Illinois really was too inexperienced for the position, his fans in the media are actually suggesting he needs help from Hillary Clinton in 2012 to make the ticket look more competent. Maybe if these sycophants would have properly reported his glaring lack of qualifications during the primaries rather than gushed and fawned over him like teenyboppers near a rock star, this would never have happened. Hmmm.

‘Media Mash’: Networks Celebrate Obama’s Birthday, CBS’s Smith Lobs Softball in Interview

After watching a highlight reel of network news reporters lamenting how President Obama was spending his 49th birthday alone and that the office is discernibly graying his hair, NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell told Fox News viewers last night that the same media outlets ignored how, the day before Obama’s birthday, “The voters of Missouri absolutely crushed, clobbered, masaquered his ObamaCare program by 71 to 29 percent.” Bozell appeared on the August 5 edition of Sean Hannity’s program for the latest installment of “Media Mash,” a look at the media’s most egregious bias of the past week. The second topic in last night’s segment was this doozy from CBS’s Harry Smith: HARRY SMITH to President Obama:  Do you feel sometimes that your administration is not given the credit it deserves? President OBAMA: Yes. “You know, this wah-wah whining has got to stop. What they’re saying is that the media aren’t pro-Obama enough,” Bozell observed, adding: Look, the Obama people have got the political defibrillators out. He’s at 41 percent [approval] in the polls. George Bush didn’t get this low until the second term after Katrina…. They’re in an absolute free-fall. So what do they doing?  First they go to “The View,” and then they go to Harry Smith. It’s a likely progression.  For the full segment, click here for MP3 audio . To watch the video, click the play button on the embed above or click here to download the WMV video file .

American Public: Too Much Chelsea, Not Enough Real News

If you thought the media’s obsession with Chelsea Clinton’s July 31 wedding went a little overboard, you’re not alone. A new poll has found that a majority of Americans think there was too much coverage of the wedding at the expense of real news. The News Interest Index Survey, conducted July 29 through August 1 by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press,  found  that 58 percent of respondents felt there was “too much” coverage of the Clinton wedding. As the Culture and Media Institute  reported , the three broadcast networks – ABC, CBS and NBC – aired 87 stories about Clinton’s nuptials between July 25 and August 1. That represented a 48-percent increase over coverage of former first daughter Jenna Bush’s wedding in 2008. Networks had reporters on the scene in Rhinebeck, N.Y., and brought in gossip columnists and celebrity wedding planners to dish on the event. But at what cost? Other news happened over the weekend, after all, including continued drama in the Gulf of Mexico and fallout over the leak of classified documents related to the war inAfghanistan, as well as economy and immigration issues. Americans noticed, according to the survey. While half believed the media delivered the “right amount” of coverage on the oil spill, pluralities felt there was “too little” coverage of the “Afghan War Diary” leak (41 percent) and the economy (42 percent).

Why Is the ACLU a ‘Civil Rights Group’ When It Provides Legal Support for Jihadists?

When the American Civil Liberties Union sues the government for its right to defend the cleric that inspired the Fort Hood mass murder, couldn’t the media describe them as radical, or even left-wing? Instead, the headline in the Washington Post Wednesday was “Treasury sued over edict on radical cleric Aulagi: Rights groups say rule prevents challenge to effective death sentence.” The Post website is more direct: “Civil rights groups sue Treasury over targeting of terror suspects for killing.” Why aren’t groups that oppose terrorists positively defined as “civil rights groups”? What about the “civil rights” of terrorist victims like the murdered at Fort Hood? Post reporter Spencer Hsu lets the ACLU’s Anthony Romero claim that endangering the jihadist’s rights endangers us all: Civil liberties groups sued the Treasury Department on Tuesday over its refusal to permit them to challenge the federal government’s claim of authority to target U.S. citizens suspected of terrorism overseas for killing. The Center for Constitutional Rights and the American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit against the department and its Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in U.S. District Court in Washington. The groups say that without a change, it would be a crime for them to provide even free legal services to a citizen whom the government has designated a terrorist and is seeking to kill. Human rights lawyers said they were retained early last month by Nasser al-Aulaqi, the father of Anwar al-Aulaqi, a U.S.-born radical cleric based in Yemen whom U.S. authorities have called a propagandist for al-Qaeda who has helped plan attacks against the United States. “The government is targeting an American citizen for death without any legal process whatsoever, while at the same time impeding lawyers from challenging that death sentence and the government’s sweeping claim of authority to issue it,” ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero said in a written statement. “Such an alarming denial of rights in any one case endangers the rights of all Americans.” The Post reporter doesn’t allow anyone to ask in the piece: isn’t it more accurate to suggest, based on real and deadly events, that it’s jihadists like Aulaqi who “endanger the rights” and even lives of Americans? The only real denunciation of Aulaqi is recycled from an old Treasury statement: Stuart Levey , Treasury’s undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, said at the time of Aulaqi’s designation that “Anwar al-Aulaqi has proven that he is extraordinarily dangerous, committed to carrying out deadly attacks on Americans and others worldwide.” He added that Aulaqi “has involved himself in every aspect of the supply chain of terrorism — fundraising for terrorist groups, recruiting and training operatives, and planning and ordering attacks on innocents.” President Obama got as much grief, from the “human rights groups” in the piece: Human-rights groups say the Constitution and international law do not permit such broad action against civilians, and that lethal force outside a battle zone should be used as a last resort when a threat is imminent. “President Obama is claiming the power to act as judge, jury and executioner while suspending any semblance of due process,” said Vince Warren, executive director of the Center for Constitutional Rights. These radical lawyers can easily convince liberals that they are the true defenders of freedom, not the war-on-terror types, or in Obama’s case, the aftertaste-of-resistance-to-man-caused-disasters types. But the same media that thinks border control in Arizona is “very controversial” can’t seem to think the ACLU and its ilk aren’t doing anything that a majority of Americans might find  to be controversial — enabling terrorists and their “spiritual advisers.”

Obama Administration’s Actions in Auto Bailout Added to Unemployment, Audit Says

The Obama administration’s policies in steering the auto bailout drove unemployment up, according to an audit by the Office of Special Inspector General for the Troubled Assets Relief Program (SIGTARP).   “At a time when the country was experiencing the worst economic downturn in generations and the government was asking its taxpayers to support a $787 billion stimulus package designed primarily to preserve jobs, Treasury made a series of decisions that may have substantially contributed to the accelerated shuttering of thousands of small businesses and thereby potentially adding tens of thousands of workers to the already lengthy unemployment rolls – all based on a theory and without sufficient consideration of the decisions’ broader economic impact,” the audit by SIGTARP Neil Barofsky stated.   “It is not at all clear that the greatly accelerated pace of the dealership closings during one of the most severe economic downturns in our Nation’s history was either necessary for the sake of the companies’ economic survival or prudent for the sake of the Nation’s economic recovery,” the audit added. The federal government committed $80.7 billion out of TARP, the $700 billion rescue bill enacted in late 2008, to save General Motors and Chrysler. Chrysler closed 789 dealerships, while GM is set to have closed 1,454 dealerships by October 2010 as a cost cutting measure.   The Treasury Department pushed General Motors and Chrysler to close dealerships at a faster rate than the companies suggested, without taking job losses into consideration, the audit says.   “Although there was a broad consensus that GM and Chrysler generally needed to decrease the number of their dealerships, there was disagreement over how, where and how quickly the cuts should have been made,” the audit says.   “In the fact of the worst unemployment crisis in a generation and during the same period in which government was spending hundreds of billions of dollars on a stimulus package to spur job growth, the Auto Team rejected GM’s original plan (which included gradual dealership terminations), expressly indicated that GM’s pace of terminations was too slow, and then encouraged the companies’ use of bankruptcy to accelerate dealership terminations,” the audit continued.   White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday that if the administration had not taken the actions it did, far more jobs would have been lost.   “I think it’s important to look at the decision to put into bankruptcy and restructure both Chrysler and GM. I think it is safe to say without that decision that the president made, it is likely that neither of those two auto companies would exist today,” Gibbs said. “Because of the president’s actions to date, there are tens of thousands of auto jobs, auto manufacturing jobs, auto dealership jobs that exist and auto parts manufacturing jobs. “   The Treasury Department strongly disagreed in a letter to the special inspector general’s office.   “In the absence of government assistance, both GM and Chrysler faced almost certain failure and liquidation, which would have resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs across multiple industries,” said the letter from Herbert Allison, assistant Treasury secretary for financial stability.   Meanwhile, GM also weighed in with a statement Monday.   “The events depicted in the SIGTARP’s report have since been overtaken by a new GM and a stronger dealer network to match,” the GM statement said. “More than a year since its bankruptcy, GM is showing substantial progress.   “The company’s business performance is stronger, sales of its four brands are up 32 percent, and it is investing billions of dollars in its plants and bringing several thousands back to work. The new GM is also moving forward to improve dealer relations and has already reinstated several hundred dealers and completed the arbitration hearings for the remaining dealers who filed cases,” the statement added.   The inspector general’s audit also said the closing of plants lacked transparency.   “Just as troubling, there was little or no documentation of the decision-making process to terminate or retain dealerships with similar profiles, making it impossible in many cases for SIGTARP to determine the causes of deviations from the supposedly objective criteria,” the audit says.   The GM statement said the firm was completely cooperative with the inspector general’s office.   “Throughout its review, GM cooperated fully with the SIGTARP to best document the company’s efforts, as well as the criteria and numerous business factors used in GM’s dealer wind-down and appeals process,” the statement said. “The GM which existed at that time did its best to develop and implement an objective dealer consolidation process under extraordinary circumstances.” Crossposted at NB sister site CNS News

NPR Publicizes Apology of Sarah Spitz for Limbaugh Death Wishes, Insists She’s Not on Their Payroll

NPR’s blog The Two-Way is running the apology of public-radio producer Sarah Spitz, who claimed to her fellow liberals on JournoList she would “Laugh loudly like a maniac and watch his eyes bug out” if Rush Limbaugh were dying in front of her. But they also wanted to insist that her ties with NPR were few: In fact, Spitz has never been an NPR employee. For many years, she has worked for  KCRW , a public radio station in Santa Monica, California, as a producer and publicist. KCRW is one of some 900 independently-operated public radio stations across the country that air NPR’s news, talk and entertainment programming. Like network TV affiliates, they air national programming but act autonomously. At 2:10 p.m. ET, Spitz issued this statement: I made poorly considered remarks about Rush Limbaugh to what I believed was a private email discussion group from my personal email account. As a publicist, I realize more than anyone that is no excuse for irresponsible behavior. I apologize to anyone I may have offended and I regret these comments greatly; they do not reflect the values by which I conduct my life. NPR also wanted to relay that their Santa Monica affliate offered regrets:  And in an email to NPR, Jennifer Ferro, KCRW’s general manager, said “the private comments made by one of our employees, Sarah Spitz, are regrettable for all of us at KCRW.” Sarah is a longtime employee of KCRW. Please note that she is not affiliated or employed by NPR, nor does she work as a journalist, as has been incorrectly reported in the media. Sarah was not acting in her position as KCRW Publicity Director when she wrote these comments. She spoke in the heat of the moment without consideration to the impact her words would have. We’ve all said things we didn’t mean and don’t reflect our core values. We believe that was the situation in this case. KCRW has, and always will be, dedicated to civil discourse and the free exchange of ideas. Since 1991, Spitz has contributed  six pieces to NPR’s flagship magazine programs,  Morning Edition and  All Things Considered , about arts and culture in the greater Los Angeles area, on a freelance basis. Her most-recent story , about an art exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), aired in 2006. Three pieces — profiles of writer Ariel Dorfman and choreographer David Rusev, and a report on a literary conference — predate NPR’s Internet archive. Anna Christopher, NPR’s senior manager of media relations, says that, since The Daily Caller posted its piece this morning, just after midnight, she has been in touch with organizations that have misidentified Spitz. Many of them, including The Daily Caller, have corrected the error. As the Spitz story shows, there is a bit of blur inside the public-radio system when it comes to the programming and the payroll. Spitz worked for KCRW, but she offered freelance reports for NPR. KCRW gets taxpayer money from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and sends some of it back to NPR in fees for its news programming. Spitz’s show Left Right & Center is on the NPR Podcast directory and airs across the country on almost 40 NPR affiliates .  By the way, Spitz also produces a show called The Politics of Culture, with such recent topics as “Homophobia in Sports” and “Alt-Econ: A Radical Approach.”
