Obama Pot-Smoking Details Revealed in New Book

President Barack Obama’s pot-smoking past is detailed in Barack Obama: The Story , a new biography of the Commander-in-Chief by David Maraniss, who had previously revealed Obama’s early girlfriends (including Genevieve Cook ) in Vanity Fair . The President himself has been remarkably and refreshingly candid about his past drug use, but new details of Obama smoking marijuana with his buddies at Hawaii’s Punahou School are still setting the web ablaze (sorry). Maraniss writes , “When a joint was making the rounds, [Obama] often elbowed his way in, out of turn, shouted ‘Intercepted!’ and took an extra hit.” Yeah. Let’s all take a moment and let that image sink in. “But Obama’s buddies, who called themselves the “Choom Gang,” didn’t mind him messing up the rotation,” he continues. “After all, this was Hawaii.” Indeed. That’s not all. Maraniss writes that Obama was known for starting a trend called “TA,” short for “total absorption.” Use your imagination. “When you were with ‘Barry’ and pals, if you exhaled precious pakalolo (Hawaiian slang for marijuana, meaning “numbing tobacco”) instead of absorbing it fully into your lungs, you were assessed a penalty,” writes the author. “Your turn was skipped the next time the joint came around.” Maraniss also describes Obama’s technique of “roof hits” while hot-boxing cars … i.e. smoking up with all the windows closed: “When the pot was gone, they tilted their heads back and sucked in the last bit of smoke from the ceiling.” The book is one of two biographies making the rounds about Obama. The Amateur , by Edward Klein, contains this alleged Obama divorce story . Again, it’s worth noting Obama has been less than shy about his drug use in the past, writing about the topic in his memoir Dreams from My Father . “Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it,” the future president wrote in the memoir, before taking a darker tone. “Junkie. Pothead. That’s where I’d been headed: the final, fatal role of the young would-be black man. Except the highs hadn’t been about that, me trying to prove what a down brother I was. Not by them, anyway.” “I got high for just the opposite effect, something that could push questions of who I was out of my mind, something that could flatten out the landscape of my heart, blur the edges of my memory.” As Obama moved to higher stage, he’s also been forthcoming about drug use. On Bill Clinton’s absurd claim that he had once tried marijuana but “didn’t inhale,” Obama said smiling in 2007, “That was the point, wasn’t it?”

Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch, Remembered: My Ill Devotion To The Beasties

Gen Y super fan recalls stumbling upon Beastie Boys’ ‘So What’Cha Want’ and falling for ‘three men from New York who rapped and rocked.’ By Rya Backer Adam Yauch Photo: Bertrand Guay/ Getty Images On Friday (May 4), news broke that Adam “MCA” Yauch had died at age 47 and I found myself working on what is easily the most difficult piece I’ve ever had to write. Because it’s something I’ve never wanted nor intended to write. You see, the Beastie Boys are my favorite band of all time. I stumbled upon the “So What’Cha Want” video when I was very young and impressionable and maybe a little too mature for my age, and remained steadfastly obsessed with the three men from New York who rapped, rocked and sometimes just played their instruments. They were my band, and I related to them, perhaps at the most base level: We’re all New York City Jews who would’ve been described as “eccentric” growing up — Ad-Rock and I had even shared a history teacher, which was a really big deal to my 6th grade self. Needless to say, my devotion to them soon became a part of my identity. And while they’ve now been woven into the fabric of our country’s pop-cultural identity, to me, the Beastie Boys are also quintessentially the Great American Band. Yes, they helped bring hip-hop to the suburbs with their debut, Licensed to Ill, you’ve heard that part before. But their body of work was incomparable, often cited and never replicated. Moreover, they never broke up, even after more than 30 years together (their first gig was at Yauch’s 17th birthday), a rare feat for most any popular act. And their influence was absolutely singular. I’m certain I’m not the only one who loves Sonic Youth, Beck, Bad Brains or Tribe Called Quest because of the Beasties’ seal of approval. They were the cool, older brothers you didn’t have, serving as barometers of what was hip and why you should care. I guess what I’m trying to say is — like Yauch — I’m an only child, and I don’t know what kind of person I would’ve become if it weren’t for the Beastie Boys’ direction. I can say with confidence that I wouldn’t be here working at MTV News. “Charity” is an interesting word when it comes to the Beasties, and especially when it comes to Yauch, because he gave so much to others. (At one point, he expressed a desire to relinquish his royalties to the cause of a free Tibet.) I remember being devastated when my bat mitzvah fell on the exact date of the 1998 Tibetan Freedom Concert, where the trio was performing. Three years later, I was devastated for a very different reason, when our city was under attack. I attended the New Yorkers Against Violence concert with my mother, who wanted to finally see for herself just what it was about the Beastie Boys that was so vital to me. We posted up against the railing that separated us from the the VIP area, and while I rocked out to the likes of Rival Schools and Cibo Matto, my mother took to playing with an adorable baby who was being held by her mother in VIP. At one point, the baby’s father came out and my mother’s jaw dropped. She grabbed my wrist: It was MCA. In a moment that would be forever etched in my memory, I registered seeing him for the first time as a man with a family. My mother (as only a sweet Jewish mother could do) tapped him on the shoulder and assured him that his #1 fan was but inches away. I honestly don’t remember much of what I told him, except how incredibly grateful I was for his work … and I’m pretty sure I cried. I saw MCA again just last year at a screening of “Fight for Your Right Revisited.” He looked frail but, once again, he was there with his wife and daughter. He looked whole and happy in their company, and that’s all that mattered. When I first joined MTV News in January 2008, my only goal was to interview the Beastie Boys. Nearly four-and-a-half years later, I assisted in writing his obituary. Later, I’d even work on a live MTV tribute show dedicated to him, “Adam Yauch: Remembering a Beastie Boy.” I wish that wasn’t the case, but these things happen, right? So what can we learn from this? Yes, Cancer is a horrible disease capable of cutting through no matter what sort of lifestyle you’ve adopted. But I also hope we’ve learned that people need to be enjoyed and appreciated while they’re still here. I’ve made a point to listen to a Beastie Boys album every week, even when, let’s face it, it wasn’t that hip to like them. I particularly made sure, following his 2009 diagnosis , because I knew this day might come. You’re never ready for it but, like I said, these things happen. And I’m sure Yauch would assure us that this lesson applies to so much more beyond his band. When I first heard the news of Yauch’s passing, I cried a different set of tears. I was sad that a part of myself that I’d so long been connected to is gone and I can never get it back. I was sad that I didn’t see them that one last time at a 2008 fundraiser, and sad, too, that we’ll never hear anything else from a group that has already given us so much. Mostly though, I was sad because I know that Yauch’s daughter will never again have that moment of familial bliss between a daughter and her dad. Share your condolences for MCA’s family, friends and fans in the comments below. Video: Get to Know 5 More 2012 Tribeca Filmmakers (and Their Films)

Movieline spotlighted filmmakers and trailers from the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival over the weekend and last week . The festival is still underway all this week, so it’s certainly not too late to catch a little Tribeca action. If you’re in New York and want to see some films at the festival (or if you are looking for a taste of Tribeca from afar), here is a sneak glimpse of more of this year’s offerings from the festival’s World Narrative Competition and World Documentary Competition . Tuesday’s spotlights include World Narrative Competition features Nancy, Please and War Witch as well as World Doc Competition contenders The Flat and The List . And in Tribeca’s genre-centered Cinemania section is Rat King . Nancy, Please by director Andrew Semans – U.S. [World Narrative Competition] Synopsis : Paul’s life is good. He is a gifted graduate student at Yale, completing a PhD in English literature, and has finally moved in with his longtime girlfriend, Jen. A bright and promising future seems assured. There’s just one thing. Paul has left an item of great importance at his old apartment: a tattered, personally annotated copy of Dickens’ Little Dorrit, the subject of his dissertation, and he simply must have it back. Doing so will mean recovering it from his casually sinister and inexplicably vindictive former roommate, Nancy, who blithely thwarts Paul’s increasingly frantic attempts at retrieval. His annoyance turns to rage and then to obsession, until his life begins to come undone. Things will get much, much worse before they get better. [Courtesy of Tribeca Film Festival] Comments by Andrew Semans … Nancy, Please quick pitch : Paul has recently moved in with his girlfriend. In the process, he has left something of great personal importance behind in his old apartment. Nancy, his casually sinister former roommate, refuses to give it back for reasons unknown. Paul is confused; Paul is frustrated; Paul is doomed. Nancy, Please is a black comedy that explores obsession, self-righteousness, and the perverse allure of victimhood in New Haven, CT.   …and why it’s worth seeing at Tribeca : It’s a funny and occasionally ghoulish story that tracks the process by which a seemingly mundane conflict can evolve into something truly absurd and truly destructive.   Thoughts about the clip : In this clip, our protagonist (Paul) confronts his former roommate (Nancy) on her doorstep in an effort to retrieve a cherished book that she’s been inexplicably withholding from him.  The Flat , by director Arnon Goldfinger – Israel, Germany [World Documentary Competition] Comments by Arnon Goldfinger … The Flat quick pitch : After my grandmother passed away at the age of 98, my family and I went to empty out the flat and soon discover hints to a mysterious and painful past. …and why it’s worth seeing at Tribeca : [It is] an unbelievable story, the secrets that are revealed, the moving characters – and the deep feelings that the film brings up with viewers. Thoughts about the trailer … The trailer is taken from the beginning of the film and is the starting point for a complicated journey that is about to unfold on screen. The flat is still filled with objects, photos and letters that accumulated over a lifetime. Soon this will all disappear, but along the way, secrets that were hidden, will begin to emerge. The List by director Beth Murphy – U.S. [World Documentary Competition] Synopsis : After working for an aid group tasked with improving infrastructure in war-torn cities in Iraq, young American Kirk Johnson returns home to news that his Iraqi co-workers are being killed, kidnapped or forced into exile by radical militias who perceived them as traitors because of their involvement with the U.S. Frustrated by his government’s inability to safeguard its endangered allies, Johnson begins compiling a list of Iraqis seeking refuge and a new life in America — all of them desperately in need of an advocate. [Courtesy of Tribeca Film Festival] Comments by Beth Murphy … The List quick pitch : The List is a modern-day Oskar Schindler story about a young American who is working to save Iraqis who are being targeted for death because they worked for the United States government and military to rebuild their country.   …and why it’s worth seeing at Tribeca : [The film] shows the human face of the Iraq War, an example of the aftermath of war. And I believe the aftermath of war is something that is all too often forgotten. America has moved on from Iraq, but for Iraqis who worked with our government and military, there is no moving on from the life-threatening reality they and their families face. And in this big picture is a very personal and emotional story of a former U.S. government employee who is single-handedly trying to redeem a nation.   Thoughts about the clip : In this scene from The List , Kirk Johnson meets in a cramped Baghdad hotel room with desperate Iraqis who are being hunted down as “traitors” and “collaborators with the enemy.” All of these Iraqis are among the thousands on Kirk’s list. They are all in danger because of their affiliation with America, and they have all been waiting for years for help from the U.S. War Witch by director Kim Nguyen – Canada [World Narrative Competition] Synopsis : Montreal-based filmmaker Kim Nguyen paints a poignant and harrowing portrait of Komona, a 14-year-old girl (wonderfully played by nonprofessional actress Rachel Mwanza) who has been kidnapped from her African village by rebels to become a child soldier. She escapes from the camp with an older albino soldier and experiences for the very first time the joys of a peaceful and loving life, but a fresh tragedy will force her to confront and fight the ghosts haunting her mind. [Courtesy of Tribeca Film Festival] Brief comments by Kim Nguyen … The War Witch quick pitch : It’s a love story at a time of war, and it’s also a story of resilience in a world filled with magic, violence and poetry.   …and why it’s worth seeing at Tribeca : Definitely, first and foremost, to see Rachel Mwanza, one of the most powerful actresses we have seen on the screen in the last decade.   A thought about the trailer : Hope in troubled times! Rat King by director Petri Kotwica – Finland [Cinemania section] (non-English) Synopsis : Eighteen-year-old Juri spends his days absorbed in his computer gaming world, to the exclusion of school, friends, and his exasperated girlfriend. One night his Internet ally “Modred,” actually another student named Niki, turns up at his door, fearing for his life. Niki is caught in the grasp of a mysterious new online game, and Juri, warned of the dangers but with nothing to lose, eagerly follows him down the rabbit hole. Initially unimpressed with a game that seems to be nothing but a series of banal tasks, Juri soon finds himself immersed in an all-consuming race against the clock for his very life. [Courtesy of Tribeca Film Festival] Comments by Petri Kotwica … The Rat King quick pitch : [It is] the story of Juri, 18, who is looking for a way out of his online gaming addiction only to find himself drawn into a deadly psychotic real-life nightmare by net-mate Niki.   …and why it’s worth seeing at Tribeca : Cleverly constructed and with outstanding cinematography, Rat King manages to combine contemporary issues, such as the relative dangers of gaming addiction, with a fast paced and entertaining storyline.   Thoughts about the trailer : I wanted to show the topic and style of the film. Rat King is a thriller spiced up with horror elements about a high school kid who enters a deadly online game. Read all of Movieline’s Tribeca 2012 coverage here .

Dick Clark’s Death: Is It Too Soon For Twitter Jokes?

Twitterverse is buzzing with memories, jokes and a suggested hologram of the late host. By Kara Klenk Dick Clark on the set of “American Bandstand” in 1980 Photo: Getty Images It’s hardly been 24 hours since legendary television personality Dick Clark died from a heart attack. While most are remembering Clark with admiration and reverence — including countless celebrities he helped to make stars — some have taken to social-media outlets to make jokes and question if a hologram version of Clark is forthcoming. While most celebrities celebrated Clark on Twitter, like @MariahCarey who tweeted a photo of them together with the message “R.I.P. Dick Clark. Your memory will live on eternally as an incredible legend,” actor/comedian @DenisLeary took a different tack, referring to Clark as a “leather faced syrup voiced lizard” person. This prompted a lot of “too soon” responses, including one from blogger Perez Hilton, who commented on his blog, “Jeez, Denis Leary. You couldn’t wait A WEEK to insult the recently deceased? Allow some time for some of us to grieve. Pretty insensitive.” Leary went on to join the “Will Dick Clark be the next hologram?” debate by tweeting, “I’m gonna package a Dick Clark Hologram mc’ing a Tupac Hologram summer tour.” With Clark’s death coming so soon after Hologram Tupac took over the Web, it’s not surprising that so many are joking about a Clark hologram possibly resuming hosting duties in the future. Comedian‏ @AFFIONCROCKETT tweeted just one of hundreds of similar comments: “R.I.P. the legendary ICONIC DICK CLARK!!! Oh, he’s DEFINITELY gonna HOLOGRAM HOST New Years Eve from now on.” Others want to see a hologram collaboration on the stage where it all began last weekend, Coachella. Comedian @DougBenson tweeted this suggestion for the festival where Holo-Pac debuted last weekend: “Dear Coachella, a Dick Clark hologram should introduce the Tupac hologram this weekend.” One Twitter user, @thechrisws, was not in favor of any Clark hologram, writing, “If I see a Dick Clark hologram this NYE, I am quitting the future.” Clark’s death has also left people hedging their bets on who will inherit his legacy with most of the buzz pointing toward Ryan Seacrest , and that too has become the butt of a few jokes in the Twittersphere. @FSUSteve tweeted, “I’d rather see a hologram of Dick Clark than a real @ryanseacrest,” while @thecajunboy joked, “Maybe Hologram Dick Clark can do what real Dick Clark never had the ba–s to do: murder Ryan Seacrest.” While social media is full of honest opinions and negative comments — and comedy helps bring levity to sad events — with Clark’s death barely a day old, is it actually too soon to be cracking jokes? Tupac Takes Over The Web Through Hologram-Inspired Memes

Holo-Pac parodies place the late rapper in the cast of ‘Titanic’ and Jem’s backup band. By Kara Klenk Tupac’s hologram performance at Coachella 2012 Photo: AV Concepts It’s been a crazy week for Tupac Shakur, who, despite having passed away in 1996, has been all over the news after his hologram performance at Coachella. The intriguing yet creepy display has sparked plenty of debate and questions about the future of touring and whether holograms disrespect the memory of late music legends. Never one to miss a viral joke opportunity, the Internet has scooped up Holo-Pac and run with it, resulting in Holo-Pac memes spreading to the far corners of the web. Trailing the success of other parody accounts such as @AngiesRightLeg and @DarthVader, the Twittersphere welcomed @HologramTupac this week, which impressively garnered more than 30,000 followers in only a few days. @HologramTupac tweets at celebrities and fans alike, often pausing to clarify that he is not a zombie, which apparently has been a point of confusion for some. Animated GIFs have been popping up everywhere, animating the Shakur hologram into classic movies like Harry Potter , Star Wars, and Titanic . Even more still photos have been Photoshopped to turn Holo-Pac into a member of the Starship Enterprise or, fittingly, of Jem’s backup band the Holograms . Others have taken the meme past the rapper and come up with dream lineups of other deceased stars. A parody Coachella lineup featuring solely hologram acts boasts headliners like Michael Jackson, The Clash and Mozart. And just when you thought they’d thought of everything, you discover an animated GIF of Tupac as the popular “Haters Gonna Hate” meme. That’s right. It’s a meme of a meme! Did your head just explode from the meta cleverness of it all? Did we miss any of the great Holo-Pac memes? Post it on our Facebook page! My name is Alexandra. Not only was it April 13th, it was…

My name is Alexandra. Not only was it April 13th , it was officially the best day of my life. Friday the 13th was not so unlucky for me at all! I found out that Justin was going to be visiting a school and I immediately begged my parents to take me. My mom agreed because she knows I have been obsessed with him for over 4 years. I missed school that day and waited for him to come for 3 hours. I was with my mom, my grandma, my best friend and my little sister. There were many cars that we thought were Justin but they were just decoys. One of the trucks was Kenny Hamilton. I could not believe that I saw Kenny and he rolled down his window to say hi. Everyone started to say how Justin was hiding in Kenny’s truck and how he didn’t want to see his fans. I immediately knew this wasn’t how Justin would behave, he loves his fans. Finally at 1:20pm, a tan GMC truck slowly made it’s way into the main entrance of the school. The truck slowly rolled down the windows and Justin said hi to his fans . At first there was an extreme pause because all of us were so caught up in the moment. We finally all realized and the screaming began. Justin asked if anyone wanted an autograph and I quickly threw my Justin Bieber notepad in the car and Pattie handed it to Justin. He signed it and smiled. While this was happening, he was holding on to my wrist . I realized that Selena was next to Pattie in the car and Scooter was in the back. There are no other words to describe Justin then absolutely flawless. There were many news cast and I got on the news many times for being the girl who was absolutely speechless. I was shaking and had so many emotions running through me at once. This moment still doesn’t feel real because for 4 years I have been a belieber and the day finally came when I met my idol. All I have ever wanted was to meet Justin Bieber and my dream has come true. This will be a memory that I will be able to tell my children when I grow up. I haven’t been able to sleep at all because I keep replaying the memory over and over in my head. Thank you so much for everything Justin! You are such an amazing person and you give hope to all the beliebers out there. You taught me to NEVER SAY NEVER and I will always dream. This will forever be the best day of my life! -@NicoletteBiebe2 Read the rest here: My name is Alexandra. Not only was it April 13th, it was…

Trayvon Martin’s Big Brother Doesn’t Believe Zimmerman’s Shady Story: “He Wasn’t Violent. He’s Smarter Than That”

Trayvon Martin’s Brother Jahvaris Fulton Speaks On His Behalf With all of George Zimmerman’s well connected defenders clamoring to his defense, it’s good to hear Trayvon Martin’s big brother Jahvaris speaking up on his behalf! A lot of conflicting statements have been made about the night Trayvon Martin was shot to death by volunteer neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. Martin’s big brother doesn’t want any of them to cloud the memory of the bright, positive teen he’d been close to. In an interview with CNN’s “A360,” 21-year-old Jahvaris Fulton said Zimmerman’s description of the fatal night –and his claim that he acted in self defense– doesn’t match the Trayvon he knew. “Based on what I heard, with the 911 tapes and all the evidence, he tried to get away from the situation,” ” the soft-spoken college student told the network on Friday. “He wasn’t violent. So for him to actually jump on someone he doesn’t even know, to me that’s not him. He’s smarter than that.” Fulton’s comments echo what he told local media in late March, shortly after the shooter’s father and brother took to national television to bolster Zimmerman’s self defense claims. “I was listening to Zimmerman’s father speak yesterday, and he said something like, my brother was on top of his son and said ‘You’re going to die tonight,’” Fulton told Miami’s CBS 4. “That doesn’t sound like my brother at all.” In his interview with CNN, Fulton said that Martin was an honor student who couldn’t wait to go to college after visiting his brother at Florida International University during spring break. “I would like to remember him as… someone who’s positive, happy, bright future ahead of him,” Fulton said.”He was probably going to be somebody.” We’re glad Jahvaris is helping to keep his brother’s memory alive.
