Dr. Dre’s ‘Kush’ Video And Other Comeback Clips

Like memorable videos from Jay-Z, Eminem and T.I., the legendary producer’s latest work heralds his return to the game. By Paul Cantor Dr. Dre Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Dr. Dre’s video for “Kush,” the lead single off Detox, hit the Net on Friday (December 10), and the clip seems to confirm the much-delayed album will be released in the near future. It’s only been a little more than a decade since the doctor dropped his last project, after all. But seeing the new video, featuring Snoop Dogg and Akon, brought to mind some other recent comeback stories in hip-hop. Here, we give you a rundown of the videos that accompanied them. Eminem, “We Made You” Released in 2009, “We Made You” was Marshall Mathers’ first solo look since his ’05 Encore album. In a sense, he picked up right where he left off, bashing celebrities and mocking the public’s love affair with pop culture. But the plan backfired, and Em left the impression that the only one obsessed with pop culture — dated pop culture, at that — was Em. As a result, his Relapse was critically panned as a comeback album; it wasn’t until this year’s Recovery that Eminem truly re-established his place in music . Jay-Z, “Show Me What You Got” Hov announced his retirement from rap as a solo artist in 2003 with The Black Album. But only three years later, he returned with a new album, Kingdom Come and a video for its lead single, “Show Me What You Got.” The Just Blaze-produced track compelled director F. Gary Gray, known for being selective about his projects, to helm the video. Filmed it in Monaco, Jay enlisted race car drivers Danica Patrick and Dale Earnhardt Jr for the well-received clip. Kanye West, “Power” Inspired by director Marco Brambilla’s “Civilization” installation at New York’s Standard Hotel, the video for ‘Ye’s “Power” was dubbed “Portrait of Power.” Less a music video than a piece of moving art, the visual showed Kanye surrounded by angels and assorted religious imagery. Coming off “Taylor-gate,” its epic quality matched the brooding scope of the song and it proved to be the right approach as critics and fans alike, lapped it up. T.I., “I’m Back” T.I. had served out a yearlong prison stint, when he returned in April with “I’m Back.” The video found the Atlanta rapper getting reacquainted with his life on the outside, namely foreign cars, expensive jewelry and the ‘hood. Rapping with an American flag as the backdrop, Tip seemed to be saying, ‘I’m still a shining example of the American Dream.’ Or, perhaps it was an allusion to career plans gone awry, an American Dream deferred. The MC’s comeback has hit some speed bumps, as his No Mercy album was released this week while the rapper serves out a new 11-month prison sentence. Dr. Dre “Still D.R.E.” “Kush” isn’t the first video Dre made fans wait umpteen years for. The super-producer did the same with “Still D.R.E.,” which was the lead song from 1999’s The Chronic 2001. It had been seven years since he’d dropped The Chronic. Clearly, Dre likes to take his time. The “Still D.R.E.” clip, featuring Snoop Dogg, found the doctor celebrating low-riders, scantily clad women and, of course, gangsta music. What’s your favorite comeback video? Exclusive: Mack Maine Reveals Lil Wayne’s Next Single

‘We definitely dropping it before the end of the year,’ Young Money boss tells MTV News about Tha Carter IV track ‘6’7″.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wayne Photo: Vallery Jean/ FilmMagic Lil Wayne may strike a diminutive figure physically, but on the microphone, the rapper is anything but small. T.I. Says He’ll ‘Be A Better Man’ In New Prison Letter

Rapper reflects on incarceration, No Mercy album and teases next LP in latest missive. By Gil Kaufman T.I. Photo: Michael Loccisano/Getty Images At this time last year, T.I. was counting down the days to his release to a halfway house after winding down a prison term on gun possession charges. But another Christmas is about to pass and the King of the South (born Clifford Harris) will again celebrate from behind prison bars in an Arkansas lockup, where he’s in the midst of an 11-month sentence for violating his probation. With his latest album, No Mercy, out on Tuesday (December 7), Tip released a letter (posted to his website the same day) updating fans on his state of mind and reflecting on where he’s been, where he hopes to go and what he’s thinking about. “So here it is…NO MERCY, the most honest and intimate installment of my life story as promised,” he wrote of the album, recorded earlier this year as he was preparing to leave the halfway house and get back to his career after nine months behind bars. “Hope y’all enjoy it and it lives up to the very high standards I’ve set for myself or anyone who’s to be considered one of the best. I must admit it takes a lot to go through as much as I have and still keep the love in your heart and in your art. But at the end of the day, if that’s what it takes to produce the music that keeps the world of hip-hop evolving on it’s axis….Then even the lowest of the lows of my life was all worth it. Thanks again for your prayers, your time and attention. And remember….It doesn’t matter how long it’ll be before the next time you see me. What matters is that I’ll be a better man before that time comes. The longer I sit, the smarter I get.” Last month, the Atlanta MC penned a note in which he admitted he was tired of being in and out of prison . In this one, T.I. thanked fans who’ve been writing to him and lifting his spirits every day; he assured them he reads all of their missives and cherishes their kind words. And while he admitted he could never write them all back (though, at the end of the post, he included a long list of people who’d sent him letters), he gave them a collective shout-out. “It’s a relief to know that there still are people who see a man with a life and not just another headline in the news,” he said. “Most of you sound very concerned and optimistic at the same time about my situation. Let me assure you all that I am definitely keeping my head up. I don’t consider myself done by far. Also many of you are convinced as I am that God has a plan for me that he’s preparing me for. How do you tell God Almighty that all you wanna do is LIVE LIFE ??? What if all you wanna do is be a father to your kids, a husband to your wife, and son to your mother while providing insightful motivation through music and lending a helping hand when possible to those who need it most. Well guys…That’s the topic of discussion between me and the MOST HIGH at the moment. I’ll keep you posted on how it turns out.” He added that maybe he’d try to capture that dialogue between him and a higher power on his next album, putting those heavy internal discussions to music. In the meantime, Tip promised to reveal the title of the follow-up to No Mercy soon and encouraged his supporters to hang in there. What do you think of T.I.’s latest letter? Tell us in the comments. T.I.’s No Mercy: An Album Guide

Released as he serves an 11-month prison bid, Tip confronts his demons on introspective new LP. By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. Photo: Moses Robinson/ WireImage When T.I. announced after his release from prison earlier this year that his next album would be titled King Uncaged, the Atlanta rapper explained that the project would touch on his time behind bars but also hark back to the themes of his earlier material, which leaned heavily on street narratives. However, when he was arrested again in October — and subsequently sentenced to 11 months in prison — Tip reconfigured the album, including a title change. No Mercy arrived in stores and online on Tuesday (December 7). If the LP’s new name doesn’t convey the sentiment of the project, the content certainly does. Throughout No Mercy, T.I. is equal parts repentant about his mistakes but also fiery as he attacks his detractors, accusing them of turning their backs on him during hard times that have included two jail stints in less than 12 months’ time. “No Mercy” On the title track featuring The-Dream, Tip strikes a good balance, looking in the mirror while also turning it around on those who can’t see past his success, where he says he’s actually battling demons. “There’s no mercy for me, no crying myself to sleep,” The-Dream sings in his airy falsetto. “No mercy for me/ Nightmares have become my dreams.” “His wife and sons and daughter know that every day he tried to be a better person,” Tip raps over the measured production. “All they want is better verses/ To market to the merchants/ But when it’s closed curtains …” “Get Back Up” The theme of clemency continues on “Get Back Up” featuring Chris Brown . The sprightly number is loaded with rhymes that lash out against the media and blogs, among others, but the lyrics are conveyed in melodic tones, hushing the vitriol. The Atlanta MC, though, also shows signs of accepting responsibility for his faults, behavior that he carried over from his days in the trap: “I admit, yeah, I done some dumb sh–,” he raps in the song. “Disappointed everybody, I know/ Try not to hold that against me, though/ My road to redemption has no GPS/ So guess time must be invested for this to be manifested/ Yes, it’s hard living life in the spotlight/ Trying to dodge the haters the same time as the cop light/ The Bible says let he without sin cast the stone first/ The sinners are the ones that judge him, who was wrong first?” “Welcome to This World” No Mercy isn’t all gloom. T.I. is still an exceptional MC, and he holds his own lyrically with a list of guests that would excite a five-star hotel manager. On the brooding “Welcome to This World,” featuring Kanye West and Kid Cudi, Tip and ‘Ye trade boastful verses about the high-life. “She coming home with me, she finnin’ meet her doom,” Tip spits. “She ain’t saying I’m the greatest, finnin’ to change her tune/ The coldest and the hottest, call me December and June/ Deliver euphoria straight to your room.” “All She Wrote” On “All She Wrote,” Tip and Eminem swap bars about spending time with the wrong woman. “Poppin’ Bottles ” After jumping on Drake’s breakout 2010 track “Fancy,” the Toronto MC reunites with Tip for “Poppin’ Bottles,” a woozy strip-club anthem. “Amazing” And “Amazing” is a bottom-heavy banger, courtesy of the Neptunes, that also finds Tip setting aside the album’s weightier themes. But the best work on No Mercy stems from Tip dealing with adversity . The rapper admitted to a pill addiction in a Vibe magazine cover story and recently penned a blog on his personal website confessing that he’s “sick and tired” of being in and out of prison “Castle Walls” He teams with Christina Aguilera for the deeply personal “Castle Walls.” It’s here that Tip confronts the consequences of his actions; a captivating documentation of this chapter in his life. “Honestly, to me, I think I lose every benefit/ Of all that I’ve accomplished if my kids never win at sh–,” he raps. “Me knowing this, why should the verse I laid/ Be more important to me than the persons I raised? “I guess I’m saying that to say that opportunity today,” Tip continues. “Don’t equate to all the time it takes away from your kids.” What do you think of T.I.’s No Mercy ? T.I.’s New Single ‘Castle Walls’ Hits The Net

Song’s lyrics describe downside of fame, with vocals by Christina Aguilera. By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. Photo: Brad Barket/Getty Images T.I. has achieved an extraordinary amount of success in his career, including Billboard chart toppers and hit movies . He’s also suffered several setbacks, like his current predicament of being an inmate in federal prison. The mix of highs and lows is nothing new to the talented but troubled MC. In a new track that surfaced online on Monday (November 29) called “Castle Walls” and featuring Christina Aguilera , the rapper reveals that despite his achievements, there’s an undercurrent of darkness shadowing his life. “See with the Phantoms and Ferraris in the driveway/ But you see it came in exchange of a sane man’s sanity,” he raps over the Alex da Kid-produced number. “Your vision jaded by the Grammys on the mantle piece/ Just switch your camera lenses, you will see the agony.” Aguilera provides a moving chorus to the track as she sings, “If I should tumble, if I should fall/ Would anyone hear me, screaming behind these castle walls.” Earlier this month, Alex da Kid (Eminem, B.o.B) told MTV News the track would be T.I.’s next single . “I love it,” he said of the number. “I think it’s amazing. It’s my sound, just kind of an evolution of that. I think it’ll cater to a lot of different people.” The track will be featured on T.I.’s forthcoming album No Mercy , set to arrive December 7. The album was previously slated to be titled King Uncaged, but the Atlanta MC changed the name after he was arrested in Los Angeles last month on drug charges and sentenced to 11 months in prison. Man Takes wifes life after 70 years of marrige. Deemed mercy killing.

SEAL BEACH, Calif. — The husband of an 86-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of murder after his wife of nearly 70 years was found dead from a gunshot to the head in a Southern California nursing home. The couple's daughter told the Los Angeles Times the shooting a month before their 70th anniversary was “a mercy killing” by a husband who had long fed and bathed his wife as she suffered from dementia and decline. Reports of gunshots at Country Villa Healthcare Center came at about noon, and within a few minutes officers arrived from the California Highway Patrol, Orange County Sheriff's Department and three local police departments, Seal Beach police Sgt. Steve Bowles said. A tactical team surrounded the facility and soon entered. Inside they found Clara Laird dead of a single gunshot wound to the head, and found her husband Roy Charles Laird, 88, in a nearby chair, Bowles said. T.I. ‘Sick And Tired’ Of Being In And Out Of Prison

‘This experience is truly a pain I have never felt before,’ rapper says in new prison-penned letter. By Mawuse Ziegbe T.I. Photo: Shareif Ziyadat/ FilmMagic T.I.’s latest prison bid is apparently changing the MC’s perspective on getting locked up. Tip was hauled back to jail earlier this month to kick off his second stint behind bars in a year after he violated his probation by getting arrested on a drug charge in Los Angeles in September. In a message posted on the Atlanta spitter’s website Thursday (November 18), the trap star, who has a litany of arrests and periods of incarceration that pre-date his chart-busting hip-hop career, described his current prison bid as a turning point in his history with the penal system. “This experience is truly a pain I have never felt before and that’s saying a lot for a n—a who’s been down locked up as many times as I have,” Tip wrote. “I see this as a real ass whoopin’. The kind you don’t just go back outside to play afterwards. You take ya ass to bed and don’t come out of your room until it’s time to go to school.” T.I. also said that switching between life as a free man and an inmate was getting old. “I don’t know what effect this will have on my life moving forward but I’m certainly sick and mother f—ing tired of going to jail, juve, prison, the pen, correctional facilities or whatever else you want to call it,” he said. “I’d have been better off doing a 5-10 year bid one time than going in time and time again for days, weeks and months for the last 15 years of my life.” Even though his legal run-ins have “been a long road,” T.I. maintained that “I’m still standing, barely, but nevertheless still standing.” He also said that instead of looking to others for inspiration and encouragement, he’s going to turn inward for a sense of purpose. “At one time I thought my motivation for continuing was for my fans, my partna Philant, my pops, my grandmama, even for the haters or the people I let down. But nah… I got to do this sh– for me!!!” he said. “I’ll be God damned if I’ve come all this way and made it through so much hell to let it go down like this! F— that! If an hour in the dark is worth a second in the sun then pass me my mother—-in’ shades cause I’m ready to cash my darkest hours in…ASAP!!!” The MC reflected on his lack of a consistent and positive father figure in his life as a factor in his development as a young man, saying, “My mother and grandparents did the best they could but I found my manhood in the trap and in prison systems.” The “Get Back Up” MC then promised that his children won’t follow in his footsteps as a felon. “[None] of mine will ever have to feel the cold tight grip of a handcuff or grace the presence of a jail cell if I can help it,” he wrote. “Over my dead body! So if you can’t respect that you ain’t rocking with my movement, then f— you dog!” T.I.’s album No Mercy is slated to hit shelves December 7. What do you think about T.I.’s latest letter?
