Admiral Thad Allen states "Top Kill" a work in progress

Post Update: Contrary to what Admiral Thad Allen said on May. 27 that the BP operation “Top Kill” stops oil leak flow, he stated to Wolf Blizter on the CNN program, The Situation Room, also on May 27, Wolf, it's a work in progress. They are pumping mud down the well bore. The hydrocarbons are being suppressed them continue to pump mud down the well. We are waiting to see if — whether or not they can reduce the pressure and have it hold. I would say it is probably a 24 or 36-hour period and they continue to do that and we are monitoring the situation. In reflection of this and the fact that to date “Top Kill” has been a 100% success so far I have edited the original headline: “‘Top kill’ stops oil leak flow in Gulf of Mexico, US Admiral says” end of update Admiral Thad Allen, head of the government's effort to help staunch the oil leak that resulted after an offshore rig collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico, told reporters Thursday morning that BP's latest effort to plug the leak has succeeded, according to the Chicago Tribune (and Los Angeles Times). The so-called “top kill” effort, launched Wednesday afternoon by industry and government engineers in Houston, has pumped enough drilling fluid to block all oil and gas from the well, Allen said. The pressure from the well is very low, but persistent, he said. Once engineers have reduced the well pressure to zero, they will begin to pump cement into the hole to entomb the well. To help that effort, he said, engineers are also pumping some debris into the blowout preventer at the top of the well. Allen said one ship that was pumping fluid into the well has run out of the fluid, or “mud,” and that a second ship is on the way. He said he was encouraged by the progress. “We'll get this under control,” he said. “They've stopped the hydrocarbons from coming up,” National Incident Commander Thad Allen was quoted elsewhere as saying. “They've been able to stabilize the well head, they are pumping mud down it.” Allen repeated his assertion on NPR Thursday morning, but officials close to the spill wouldn't confirm or deny Allen's comments to Reuters. http://rawstory.com/rs/2010/0527/breaking-top-kill-stops-oil-leak-flow-gulf-mexi… BP oil spill: 'top kill' live coverage http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/blog/2010/may/27/bp-oil-spill-top-kill Live from the Ocean Floor: New Oil Leak Widget Features 'Spillcam' http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/2010/05/newshour-oil-widget-2-including-spil… added by: zichi

Underwater Robot Scans for Submerged Oil in Gulf of Mexico (Video)

Photo credit iRobot Scientists are already rushing to determine the environmental impact of the Gulf oil spill, and iRobot is helping with the Seaglider, an unmanned underwater vehicle that has been sent to the ocean floor to prowl for submerged oil. iRobot is known for the Roomba and consumer cleaning robots, but this UUV unfortunately won’t be doing any cleaning. Instead, researchers need to measure the presence of oil trapped underwater, so the Seaglider, which can operate for up to 10 months, was released to find oil and repo… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Stop West Virginia’s Spruce Mountaintop Removal Coal Mine

Photo courtesy of the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition and SouthWings. While we watch the continuing BP oil disaster in the Gulf, there is another form of dirty, destructive, energy we need to break free from: Coal. A very important deadline is rapidly approaching —on June 1st the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will stop taking public comments on its proposed veto of the permit that would allow devastating mountaintop removal coal mining at the massive Spruce No. 1 mine in Logan County, West Virginia…. BP Gulf Oil Spill Officially the Worst in US History

Photo via the LA Times By BP and the US Coast Guard’s own conservative estimates, the spill in the Gulf of Mexico is now officially the worst in US history. Those estimates place the leak as having let 19 million gallons of oil into the Gulf, 8 million more than the Exxon Valdez spill of 1989. But another federal agency, the US Geological Survey, just conducted an independent study, and found that it’s much, much wors… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Gulf BP oil spill top kill picture

A graphic illustrating the “top kill” procedure which BP will start to contain the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill by sealing a ruptured well. BP nervously carried out final tests Wednesday before a risky deepwater bid to cap the Gulf of Mexico oil leak under huge pressure to get it right this time and plug the five-week-old spill. The “top kill” procedure aimed at stemming the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico by shooting mud into the blown-up well 5,000 feet underwater will likely cont

What are Mexicans saying about the immigration issue?

Since I speak Spanish and I know that a lot of people don't and would like to find out what is being said in forums in Mexico, I decided to take a look…just out of curiosity. To be honest, I was really surprised at the results. I will share the comments in the Original Spanish (so no one accuses me of inventing or mistranslating the posts for political reasons) and a link to the article. Also, I've pretty much gone straight down the list of comments from top to bottom. I didn't cherry pick, although I ignored two because they were reponses to other posters and were not really relevant. I started at an article titled “14 states prepare racial laws like Arizona”. You'll note immediately the political misrepresentation in the title, which concerned me. The article itself didn't mention race after except in the title. Misleading much? As you read this, keep in mind my previous post in which I spoke about the Mexican sense of pride. You will see it on display here. http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/notas/682834.html Posted comments: Thieron: {El Gobierno debe preocuparse por mejorar la situaci
