Featuring Michael Douglas as fallen financial titan Gekko, Carey Mulligan as his estranged daughter Winnie and Shia LaBeouf as her fianc

‘Wall Street’ Brings In Box-Office Bucks

‘Money Never Sleeps’ takes $7 million in theaters on Friday. By Mawuse Ziegbe Michael Douglas and Shia LaBeouf in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” Photo: 20th Century Fox The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” ($7 million) #2 “The Town” ($5 million) #3 “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” ($4.6 million) #4 “Easy A” ($3.6 million) #5 “You Again” ($2.8 million) Proving money still talks — at least, to moviegoers — “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” took the top spot at the Friday box office. Michael Douglas’ return as Gordon Gekko, 23 years after he powered the cautionary money, power and success tale of the original “Wall Street,” rang up $7 million in ticket sales. Another cash-grabbing flick, “The Town,” also scored big with audiences, landing in the second-place slot. The film, which follows vault looters (Ben Affleck), ladies (Blake Lively and Rebecca Hall) and the law (Jon Hamm) as they get caught up in the nefarious Boston bank-robbing underworld, made $5 million. The haul brings the movie’s total estimated tally to just over $38 million since its debut last Friday. The Friday top five wasn’t all about money grubbing and shady ethics. The animated feature “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” debuted in third place. Adapted from the children’s book series by author Kathryn Lasky, and boasting voice-over performances from Helen Mirren and Geoffrey Rush, the kid-friendly fantasy flick raked in an estimated $4.6 million. The high-school comedy “Easy A” continued to turn in good marks at the box office. Featuring a cast of young Hollywood names, including Emma Stone, Penn Badgley and Amanda Bynes, the flick pulled in $3.6 million during its second Friday on screens. Rounding out the top five with a tale of post-high school awkwardness is “You Again.” Audiences plunked down $2.8 million to catch Kristen Bell’s turn as a successful PR professional grappling with the fact that her brother’s fianc

‘The Town’ Rules Supreme At The Weekend Box Office

Ben Affleck’s crime thriller wins the weekend, while M. Night Shyamalan’s return to horror fails to scare up a win. By Josh Wigler Slaine, Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner and Owen Burke in “The Town” Photo: Warner Bros. The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Town” ($23.8 million) #2 “Easy A” ($18.2 million) #3 “Devil” ($12.6 million) #4 “Resident Evil: Afterlife” ($10.1 million) #5 “Alpha and Omega” ($9.2 million) Last week, “Resident Evil: Afterlife” scored an easy first-place finish at the box office thanks to a dearth of other new competitors. But that wasn’t the case this past weekend, with brand-new films emerging from the likes of Ben Affleck, M. Night Shyamalan and Emma Stone to give last week’s reigning champion a run for its money. Leading the pack of this weekend’s new releases was “The Town,” Affleck’s second directing effort and already his most successful to date. Affleck also stars in the Boston crime thriller about a bank robber who falls in love with one of his hostages, much to the chagrin of his fellow criminals. “The Town” scored a $23.8 million haul from Friday through Sunday, earning enough in one weekend to eclipse the entire $20.3 million run of Affleck’s directorial debut, “Gone Baby Gone.” “Easy A” took second place with a strong $18.2 million. Starring Emma Stone, Cam Gigandet and Amanda Bynes, director Will Gluck’s modern retelling of “The Scarlet Letter” was shot on a modest budget of $8 million, with its weekend performance already pushing it $10.2 million past the profit line. M. Night Shyamalan’s return to the horror genre with “Devil” wasn’t enough to scare moviegoers into theaters. “Devil,” the first entry in the “Night Chronicles,” managed a mere $12.5 million debut despite early positive buzz and a clear marketing push. “Alpha and Omega,” Lionsgate’s newest animated family film, about a pack of wolves, scored $9.2 million to land in fifth place. Last week’s “Resident Evil” held on to a top five spot with a $10.1 million performance. Upcoming Releases Zack Snyder gets animated with “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole,” while Michael Douglas assumes the role of Gordon Gekko once again in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Town,” “Easy A” and “Devil.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Score: The Hockey Musical Opens TIFF With Jaw-Dropping, Head-Scratching Slap Shot

Considering the dull thud with which last year’s opening-night film Creation landed here, the Toronto Film Festival decided to go more traditional with tonight’s fest opener. And while Score: A Hockey Musical is quite possibly the most distinctly Canadian product I’ve seen since, well, ever , there is no denying that this one also throws tradition under the Zamboni. It’s more like a hockey opera — and yes, that really is Theo Fleury doing his own singing.

On DVD: Michael Douglas, an American Icon of Male Menopause

The new-to-DVD indie Solitary Man is a sharp-witted, resonant portrait of an aging all-American bird-dogger approaching his autumn years, and it’d be fine even without Michael Douglas, but with him, it has the tone of a social elegy. Not many actors grow careers with themes attached, but Douglas has — it only took him a while to find his subject. He acted for years, doing TV in his 30s, and had a medium hit with Romancing the Stone when he was 40. But he was nothing much of interest then, and could have been swapped out for any number of other actors. What changed?

Michael Douglas and Josh Brolin Display Their Manhood In New Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps Clip

In case you haven’t been to the zoo lately, this new clip from Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps should save you a trip to the gorilla house. Michael Douglas takes Josh Brolin to task for some of his shadier business practices and the whole thing turns into a dick measuring contest. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps opens on September 24, and based on the clip, I’d say it’s going to 60% he-man posturing, 35% financial gobbledygook, and 5% Shia LaBeouf looking awkwardly on like a confused young doe.
