Lady Gaga, Pink Usher In New Age Of Pop Spectacle

‘We have returned to the age of P.T. Barnum,’ one expert says. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Popular music has always been about putting on a show. From the psychedelic fantasias of 1970s rockers Pink Floyd to Madonna’s many Vegas-like tours, KISS’ relentless pyro attack , the boy-band glitter parades of the early 2000s and the over-the-top plans for Michael Jackson’s never-mounted This is It farewell shows , major artists have always tried to pony up a big show for their fans. And now, thanks to a new generation of visually acute music stars, we could be living in a new age of the great pop spectacle. From Muse’s massive stadium light show to Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball outing and Pink’s Cirque du Soleil-like Funhouse Tour , artists are going above and beyond in an effort to give their fans a never-ending, eye-popping extravaganza. “We were missing a real element of showmanship [in music] for a while, but you see it in Gaga and her elaborate costuming and in artists like Pink,” music-industry veteran Jeff Rabhan, chair of recorded music and an arts professor at NYU’s Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music, said of Gaga’s now-legendary meat dress and string of outrageous getups at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards . He also pointed to the positive reaction for Kanye West’s visually stunning VMA performance as further proof that audiences were thirsting for a return of the pop spectacle. “It’s been lacking, and that’s the reason that people are drawn to it,” he said of the chatter that inevitably follows one of West’s unique set pieces. In fact, the rapper has more in store with his 40-minute film-noir project in support of the “Runaway” single , which is not surprising coming from an artist who has always been very tuned in to the importance of having great visuals to accompany his music. In rock music, bands like U2 have always understood the importance of giving their fans something unique, from their PopMart Tour in the late 1990s to their most recent 360 Tour , which included the largest, most elaborate stage ever built for a live show. More contemporary acts like Britney Spears have also done their part, hitting the road for her Circus extravaganza with a stage full of magicians, tumblers and glitzy costumes. On a smaller scale, “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert has made glitter bombs and gender-bending videos and performances part of his pop calling card, earning him the distinction of outpacing his onetime rival, season-eight winner Kris Allen, in album sales and concert tickets. What sets some of today’s stars apart, according to Robert J. Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University, is the immersive way they live their public lives. “Artists like Gaga and Ke$ha are always in costume,” Thompson said of the outrageous makeup and outfits those pop stars, and other such as Katy Perry, model every time they go out in public. “We have returned to the age of P.T. Barnum, no question about it. But I suppose these things go in cycles, a case you can make if you look at the biggest acts of all time, which were all spectacle-oriented: Madonna, Michael Jackson.” Thompson said outrageous characters have always played a part in popular music, but with the dawn of the video age in 1981, artists had a new medium to explore with flashy videos that added another layer to their radio hits. Then, with the rise of the Internet, the decade-long contraction of the music industry and a renewed emphasis on singles-oriented artists over the past nine years thanks to iTunes, the ability to reach a mass audience just through radio and video began to disappear. “We went into a period where music was being consumed not with a visual spectacular or with the visual of a big album cover, but as an

Emma Stone Recalls Asthma Attack During ‘Easy A’ Fake-Sex Scenes

‘I can’t even simulate sex without dying!’ she jokes to MTV News. By Kara Warner Emma Stone in “Easy A” Photo: Sony Pictures If you’ve been longing for a smart and sassy teen comedy, “Easy A” is your next must-see movie. Starring cutie-pie actress Emma Stone and “Gossip Girl” star Penn Badgley, the film revolves around the omnipresent teenage obsession with reputation. Nice girl/ semi-outsider Olive (Stone) makes a deal with a guy friend to pretend to have loud, crazy sex at a house party so the bullies at their high school will think he’s “cool” and leave him alone. But that one good-natured act soon spirals into many more “requests” from other similarly plagued students. Soon the high school rumor mill has been set ablaze with exaggerated accounts of Olive’s alleged exploits. Speaking of rumors, when MTV News caught up with the charming actress to discuss the film, we mentioned that we had heard one ourselves — a little something about Stone hyperventilating during the filming of the hilarious fake sex scene and needing an oxygen tank to recover. “Oh, for the love, I can’t even simulate sex without dying!” Stone jokingly admitted. “I had a little asthma attack, without any prior knowledge that I had asthma, during the scene where we had to jump up and down for hours and hours screaming and yelling on the bed. [It] was humiliating, because it was the second day of shooting,” she explained, adding that her little episode must have made a great impression on the crew. “Here’s what it’s going to be like the whole movie, as I’m breathing into an oxygen tank,” she said. “The crew was like, ‘She’s going to be a real blast. Wow. Amazing. A 20-year-old having an asthma attack.’ ” Fortunately, Stone said that day was the only time she needed any medical attention. Lady Gaga Lands In ‘Guinness World Records’ Book

Gaga sets record for most weeks on the U.K. chart and most-searched female. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Mark Ralston/ Getty Images Fresh from her record-setting eight wins at the MTV Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga is celebrating yet another milestone this week. According to the folks at the Guinness World Record organization, Lady G has beaten Oasis’ record for the most weeks on the U.K. charts. Since its release in August 2008, singles from Gaga’s debut, The Fame, have notched an amazing 154 consecutive weeks in the top 75, besting the Gallagher brothers’ previous record of 134 weeks. Michael Jackson’s Mom Sues Concert Promoter AEG Live

Lawsuit allegedly filed by pop star’s mother claims AEG Live neglected his medical care, according to an online report. By Kara Warner Michael Jackson Photo: Getty Images The litigation that has surrounded the tragedy of Michael Jackson’s untimely death continues. Katherine Jackson, on behalf of and along with Michael Jackson’s children, has filed suit against AEG Live, the promoter for the late superstar’s 50-date concert residency . Jackson’s mother charges the company breached its contractual agreement to provide medical care for her son and argues they were negligent in hiring controversial doctor Conrad Murray . According to TMZ , Katherine’s filing claims AEG’s contract with Michael “created a legal duty for AEG to act reasonably toward the physical well-being of Michael Jackson.” The website also points out that the lawsuit lists Katherine Jackson as a Guardian ad Litem, or legal representative, for Michael’s three children, which Katherine is not. Jackson’s mother is in fact only the trio’s guardian. The gossip site suggests that the mistake, along with the fact that Katherine’s reps know nothing about the lawsuit, suggests she is not actively involved in this case. In other MJ-related lawsuit news, Conrad Murray’s attorneys asked a federal judge on Wednesday (September 15) to dismiss the wrongful death lawsuit filed by the singer’s father, Joe Jackson, because he is not a beneficiary of the late singer’s estate. The Associated Press reported that Murray’s lawyers equated Joe’s lawsuit to a “press-release that is intended to prejudice and inflame the jury pool and the public.” The motion will reportedly be considered by a federal judge during a hearing scheduled for Oct. 18. Joe Jackson sued Murray on June 25, the one-year anniversary of his son’s death in 2009 at age 50. His lawsuit claimed the doctor withheld vital information about Jackson’s medical history — including a list of all the drugs he had administered to his patient — from paramedics who responded to a 911 call, as well as to doctors at UCLA Medical Center who attempted to revive the singer. At the autopsy for Jackson, the complaint also alleges that Murray “said nothing” about having administered the surgical anesthetic propofol, which the coroner concluded caused Jackson’s death. The lawsuit seeks more than $75,000 in damages. Chris Brown’s Mother Apologizes For Michael Jackson Comment

Joyce Hawkins says she was ‘misunderstood’ after tweeting ‘Michael Jackson died so that Chris Brown could live!!!’ By Gil Kaufman Chris Brown Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Like son, like mother. Just as impertinent social media posts have often tripped up Chris Brown , his mother, Joyce Hawkins, set off a 140-character tempest this week with some provocative comments she made about her famous offspring’s musical hero. It all began on Tuesday, when Hawkins tweeted the phrase “Michael Jackson died so that Chris Brown could live!!!” The comment about the June 2009 death of Jackson has since been taken down, but not before it elicited a raft of harsh comments for Breezy’s mom. It was especially puzzling given the singer’s avowed love for the late King of Pop, which was on display at the BET Awards earlier this year when Brown had a breakdown while performing during a tribute to Jackson. After apparently being inundated with flames for her tweet, Hawkins released a statement to USA Today on Thursday in which she explained, “I’m so sorry that the tweet I sent yesterday was misunderstood. What I meant to say is that Chris has always been inspired by Michael Jackson’s music and his career.” She later tweeted , “I’m sorry I offended anyone. The statement meant Chris would carry on Michaels [sic] legacy.” Since deleting the original post, momanger Hawkins has continued to do what she has done since joining the service: offer inspirational comments to her 8,000 followers. On Friday (September 10) morning, she took the kind of strident, “us against the world” tone Brown often adopted after one of his Twitter episodes. “Angels continue to lift ur heads ever so high and ask God to guide and lead u throughout the good and the bad,” she wrote. “Stand strong on his word!!!” Related Artists Chris Brown

Eminem’s Road To Recovery And Beyond: A VMA Cheat Sheet

Take a look back at Marshall Mathers’ journey to the 2010 VMAs, airing this Sunday, September 12. By Gil Kaufman Eminem at the 2002 VMAs Photo: Theo Wargo/ Getty Images Eminem has been to this party before. With nine wins, he’s one of the most rewarded artists ever at MTV’s Video Music Awards (ahead of Michael Jackson, in fact.) So it kind of makes sense that after almost five years spent out of the spotlight dealing with a nearly fatal addiction to prescription medication and a year after an attempted relaunch of his career with the Relapse album, Em is headed into Sunday night’s show with the second-most nominations, the promise of yet another sure-to-thrill performance and a chance to reclaim his VMA throne. He may even slip into third or fourth place on the all-time list. Behind only Lady Gaga’s record 13 nods, Eminem banked eight bids , including Best Male Video and Video of the Year for the emotional “Not Afraid.” It’s fitting that Shady gets resurrected after a nearly fatal car crash in his VMA promo , since just a year ago, some of his fans were wondering if Eminem had lost the golden touch that has earned the Detroit MC more than 80 million in global sales and made him one of the biggest breakout music stars of his generation. Though Relapse notched the biggest Billboard debut at one point in 2009 with 608,000, some critics noted that it lacked some of the lyrical crispness of Em’s past work. Though he’s since said Relapse was recorded while he was still struggling to emerge from the fog of his addictions, Eminem showed he still had a sense of humor, taking it in stride at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards when gay Austrian fashion reporter Br
