‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Lee Wins The ‘Season Of The Girl’

Joe Cocker, Paula Abdul and other random guests can’t distract from a lackluster season nine. By Jim Cantiello “American Idol” wrapped up “The Season of the Girl” by handing the “Idol” crown to a boy. Season nine really was as inept as we all thought. Sorry Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox , but Wednesday night’s two-hour finale was really all about Simon Cowell . With the exception of David Cook and Adam Lambert , most of the past “Idol” favorites showed up — even ones Simon supposedly hates — to say goodbye to the guy who helped make them moderately successful. (Some crackpot audition rejects also performed with Dane Cook. It was supposed to make Simon squirm, and he did … along with the rest of America.) Then Paula Abdul returned to the “Idol” stage in a bizarre appearance that can only be described as part roast, part intervention. “Idol” producers booked lots of special guest stars from the ’70s and ’80s to duet with the top 12: Alice Cooper, Chicago, Joe Cocker, Darryl Hall and John Oates, the Bee Gees. It was one Charo away from being an episode of “The Love Boat.” Producers also double-dipped into the ’90s Relics bin by inviting Alanis Morissette to duet with Crystal on a G-rated “You Oughta Know” and Christina Aguilera to perform with the top six girls for six seconds before booting them from the stage so should could sing her new 18-minute-long ballad. The only contemporary artists were previous Idols. A very fierce Carrie Underwood served up “Undo It” and Kris Allen rocked his new single, “Yo, Seacrest, Your Microphone Is on During My Performance and That’s Annoying.” Kris was also on hand to give Lee and Crystal their new custom-designed Ford Fiestas. Interesting side note: The Ford Fiesta is a fraction of the cost of the cars Kris and Adam won last year. Even the sponsors realized this season sucked. The night’s biggest surprise was Casey James and Bret Michaels’ duet. I’m still not sure what was more shocking: the fact that Bret Michaels was onstage even though he’s still recovering from a life-threatening brain hemorrhage, or the fact that Casey James was one of the best performers of the night. After Janet Jackson showed off a short, slicked-back ‘do and General Larry Plant and William Hung showed off a lack of shame, Seacrest announced the winner the way Maury reveals paternity tests. Lee DeWyze, you ARE the father. Do you agree with the results? Do you think a girl can ever win “Idol” again? What was your favorite moment of the two-hour finale? Wale Plays The Gentleman In ‘Diary’ Video

Rapper gets the girl in new video, which premieres on MTV Jams May 31. By Jayson Rodriguez Wale in “Pretty Girls” Photo: Interscope Wale partied and showed off his Washington, D.C., roots for his breakout video “Pretty Girls,” but in the rapper’s new clip for “Diary,” he plays more of the gentleman type. “What he wanted to do was kind of show that we, as men, when we approach a girl, we don’t always know exactly what her past was,” Rik Cordero, who helmed the shoot, told MTV News. “Whether she was angry or felt a sort of way because another dude made a mistake that we have to pay for, that was the message Wale wanted to get across in this video.” In the opening scene of “Diary,” Wale is shown passing out flyers for an event and then approaches a group of girls, going directly up to the one in whom he’s interested. The woman, though, isn’t too impressed with Wale and quickly rebuffs him, telling him she’s not really interested. “You didn’t even give me a chance,” he shoots back before she walks away. “It’s like that,” Wale adds. Through a series of flashbacks, though, viewers see what happened to the female protagonist leading up to her brief encounter with Wale. She had discovered her boyfriend was cheating on her, and after she approached him, she was confronted by his “other woman,” leading her down a path of pain and confusion. The film was shot in New York in and around Sputnik, a local bar and lounge in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. The venue is featured prominently in the last scene, which involves a poetry night in which Wale’s last verse addresses his leading lady’s hardships. His inspirational lines, delivered in a spoken-word-like soliloquy, hang in the air as she makes her way into the club, surprised to see Wale behind the microphone onstage. “Diamonds, a girl’s best friend, is what they say, but believe me, with the right allegiance, you gonna shine anyway,” he says, as he connects eyes with her and she finally smiles back. What do you think about Wale’s “Diary” video? Let us know in the comments!

Baby James for Manny Villar?

Baby James is the son of Kris Aquino (sister of Nacionalista Presidentiable Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III) and James Yap (a PBA superstar). Recently, a video uploaded in YouTube shows Kris and Baby James in Bacolod for a campaign for Noynoy. When Kris allowed Baby James to hold the microphone, the cute little boy chanted “Villar” three times. Kris was shocked and immediately turned his back on the crowd and whispered to Baby James, “No.” When Manny Villar, the Liberal Party presidentiable saw the said video, he said that he was happy and honored because even the nephew of his rival (Noynoy) knew him. He said “ Ako ay natutuwa at isang malaking karangalan sa akin dahil alam mo ang mga bata, pinakahonest ,” (He was happy and it’s a big honor for him because as you know it, the children are the most honest.) Carrie Prejean Throws Hissy Fit on Larry King Live

In an interview with Larry King last night, Carrie Prejean told the host: “Sarah Palin is my hero.” Incredibly, however, that was NOT the most ridiculous thing Prejean did or said during the segment! Before throwing a fit and acting like a six-year old, Carrie expounded on her admiration for Palin. She said she admired the former governor’s “strength and her courage,” adding that Palin would “make a great President.” But Prejean also said Palin is “smart enough to get out of” politics. Indeed, why make a supposedly great President and help your country when you can earn money from speeches and books instead?

Carrie Prejean Attempts to Storm Off Larry King, Is Foiled by the Siren Call of Rolling Cameras

Lou Dobbs wasn’t the only right-wing populist to attempt a dramatic CNN exit last night. Unfortunately, he’s the only one who succeeded, because former Miss California and Christianist poster girl Carrie Prejean can’t even throw a proper on-set hissy fit. Larry King , the reigning champion of softball interviews, was apparently not soft enough for Ms.
