The people of China thought they could do what the Africans and Arabs are doing. There government had a much more effective way of dealing with unhappy citizens though. Jittery Chinese authorities staged a show of force to squelch a mysterious online call for a “Jasmine Revolution,” with hundreds of onlookers but only a handful of people actively joining protests inspired by pro-democracy demonstrations sweeping the Middle East. Authorities detained activists Sunday, increased the number of police on the streets, disconnected some cell phone text messaging services and censored Internet postings about the call to stage protests in Beijing, Shanghai and 11 other major cities. Police took at least three people away in Beijing, one of whom tried to place white jasmine flowers on a planter while hundreds of people milled about the protest gathering spot, outside a McDonald’s on the capital’s busiest shopping street. In Shanghai, police led away three people near the planned protest spot after they scuffled in an apparent bid to grab the attention of passers-by. Many activists said they didn’t know who was behind the campaign and weren’t sure what to make of the call to protest, which first circulated Saturday on the U.S.-based Chinese-language news website Boxun.com. The unsigned notice called for a “Jasmine Revolution” – the name given to the Tunisian protest movement – and urged people “to take responsibility for the future.” Participants were urged to shout, “We want food, we want work, we want housing, we want fairness” – a slogan that highlights common complaints among Chinese. The uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia have inspired a few more uprisings by oppressed people elsewhere in Africa and the Middle East. Unfortunately, as motivated as the people are, in each country the desire for freedom is bringing the same thing: violence. Dozens of protesters were killed in clashes with Libyan security forces in the nation’s second-largest city Saturday as protests against eccentric dictator Moammar Khadafy stretched into a fifth day. The worst uprisings in Khadafy’s 42 years of power continued as government snipers killed 15 mourners attending the funerals of slain protesters in Benghazi. But a witness said the death toll was much higher. “Dozens were killed…not 15, dozens. We are in the midst of a massacre here,” the witness said. The government also cut off Internet access across the nation, blocking the anti-Khadafy protesters from posting photos and video. Human rights officials estimate the death toll in the demonstrations has now hit 84 as the Khadafy regime lashes out at its opponents. A similar scene played out on the streets of Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, where one demonstrator was shot to death and five wounded during protests against President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Protesters, now in the 10th day of demonstrations, are demanding Saleh’s resignation after 32 years under his rule. Between all the death and destruction of protest, we just hope these people are able to enjoy their freedom once they finally get it. Source

By Eric Ditzian Liam Neeson Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images In an emotionally raw new interview with Esquire, Liam Neeson opens up about the sudden 2009 death of his wife, Natasha Richardson , delving into details about the aftermath of her skiing accident and speaking candidly about the grief that still consumes him. Neeson, it seems, didn’t plan on discussing his familial tragedy. “I’m too vulnerable,” he tells the magazine at one point. “I can’t go there.” But go there he does, explicating in great and harrowing detail, for example, the moment when he arrived at a Montreal hospital and struggled to locate his wife. “I’m like, ‘F—, I know my wife’s back there someplace,’ ” he said. “So I get there, just in time. And all these young doctors, who look all of eighteen years of age, they tell me the worst. The worst.” After the funeral, Neeson returned to Canada, where he’d been shooting the sexually charged thriller “Chloe.” “I just think I was still in a bit of shock,” he said. “But it’s kind of a no-brainer to go back to that work. It’s a wee bit of a blur, but I know the tragedy hadn’t just really smacked me yet.” That wouldn’t happen until later, and to hear Neeson tell it, the grief hasn’t yet ebbed, even as he tries to stay busy and keep those emotions at bay. “It’s easy enough to plan jobs, to plan a lot of work. That’s effective. But that’s the weird thing about grief. You can’t prepare for it. You think you’re gonna cry and get it over with. You make those plans, but they never work,” he said. “It hits you in the middle of the night — well, it hits me in the middle of the night. I’m out walking. I’m feeling quite content.
