Ex-military leaders: Young adults ‘too fat to fight’

(CNN) — More than a quarter of young adults are unable to meet physical requirements to join the military, creating a potential threat to national security, a group of retired armed forces leaders said Tuesday. “It's not drug abuse, it's not asthma, it's not flat feet — by far the leading medical reason is being overweight or obese,” said retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Norman Seip at a news conference. About 27 percent of young adults are medically ineligible for the military, according to Mission: Readiness, a group of retired admirals, generals, and other senior military leaders. Mission: Readiness' report, “Too Fat to Fight,” said that 75 percent of young Americans between the ages of 17 to 24 do not qualify for the military because of failure to graduate [from high school], criminal records or physical problems. The study cited Department of Defense and health data. DISGUSTING. added by: larock

National Weed Day – the meaning of 4 20

Unofficial National Weed Day is April 20, or 4/20. The meaning of 4 20: Four Twenty has come to be synonymous with pot smoking marijuana culture. Once a secret code for those in the know, 4 20 is becoming mainstream, part and parcel of the rallying cry being expressed by Americans everywhere: Free the Weed! 4 20 is a cultural meme, a unit of cultural transmission. Pot smokers celebrate the symbolic number. The term Four Twenty is a means to communicate with and identify fellow pot smokers. The twentieth day of the fourth month, April 20, has come to be a Stoner Holiday, a day for the celebration of the culture and identity surrounding marijuana. http://www.examiner.com/x-4383-Portland-Progressive-Examiner~y2010m4d19-National… added by: unimatrix0

More Than 53 Percent of Your Tax Bill Goes to the Military

Your tax dollars at war. If you're like me, now that we're in the week that federal income taxes are due, you are finally starting to collect your records and prepare for the ordeal. Either way, whether you are a procrastinator like me, or have already finished and know how much you have paid to the government, it is a good time to stop and consider how much of your money goes to pay for our bloated and largely useless and pointless military. The budget for the 2011 fiscal year, which has to be voted by Congress by this October 1, looks to be about $3 trillion, not counting funds collected for Social Security (since the Vietnam War, the government has included the Social Security Trust Fund in the budget as a way to make the cost of America's imperial military adventures seem smaller in comparison to the total cost of government). Meanwhile, the military share of the budget works out to about $1.6 trillion. That figure includes the Pentagon budget request of $708 billion, plus an estimated $200 billion in supplemental funding, called “overseas contingency funding” in euphemistic White House-speak), to fund the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, some $40 billion or more in “black box” intelligence agency funding, $94 billion in non-DoD military spending, $100 billion in veterans benefits and health care spending, and $400 billion in interest on debt raised to pay for prior wars and the standing military. The 2011 military budget, by the way, is the largest in history, not just in actual dollars, but in inflation-adjusted dollars, exceeding even the spending in World War II, when the nation was on an all-out military footing. Military spending in all its myriad forms works out to represent 53.3 percent of total US federal spending. It's also a budget that is rising at a faster pace than any other part of the budget (with the possible exception of bailing out crooked Wall Street financial firms and their managers). For the past decade, and continuing under the present administration, military budgets have been rising at a nine percent annual clip, making health care inflation look tiny by comparison. more at link… added by: WakeUpPeople

Vienna Girardi’s Shady Past Includes Drug Kingpin Ex

Scandalous info about Vienna Girardi is hardly in short supply, but dating an alleged drug lord up until the moment she met Jake Pavelka? Didn’t see that coming! Vienna Girardi dated Chase Alley until she left for the L.A. taping of The Bachelor , during which he went down in the biggest drug bust in Central Florida history. On March 5, he was hit with 50 counts of buying, selling and possessing marijuana, along with money laundering, drug trafficking, importing and racketeering. In short, Vienna made a good choice with Jake Pavelka. He may be an uptight stiff and there’s no way they’re actually getting married, let’s face it, but at least he’s available to hang out between now and 2039. Vienna Girardi has great taste in men! [Photo: PacificCoastNewsOnline.com] A Chase Alley friend, Andrew Bachanov, tells Radar Online that “he never told girls about the drugs” and dated Vienna “because she was going to be famous.” Everyone knew she was going to be on The Bachelor at the time, says his pal, and Chase wanted a piece of that infamy. He ended up getting it … sort of. The college student made headlines as one of 41 people arrested in a massive drug bust and gun raid. His operation was said to make $750,000 a week. This is on top of her ex-husband , who she supposedly cleaned out while he was in the military, and not the same ex who was arrested for stalking Vienna. She might want to take Jillian Harris’ advice and tune out celebrity gossip, because very little of it that involves her is flattering. Will Jake Pavelka and Vienna Girardi last?

Chad Ochocinco Applauds ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Castoff Buzz Aldrin

‘Buzz is one of the best to ever do it,’ the NFL star says of his ousted ‘Dancing’ castmate. By Kelley L. Carter Cheryl Burke and Chad Ochocinco Photo: Adam Larkey LARKEY/ABC LOS ANGELES — Even though he’s no longer competing on “Dancing With the Stars,” the presence of the former astronaut and MTV icon Buzz Aldrin will still be felt. The morning after his castmate was sent home , Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco talked about how inspired he was by the 80-year-old. “Buzz is one of the best to ever do it. He walked on the moon, man. We respect him and what he’s done for this country. He’s big,” Ochocinco said, explaining the emotional salute he and the other celebrities and dancers gave Aldrin, who was Monday night’s low-scorer, as he and partner Ashly Costa did an encore of their waltz. Aldrin told viewers in a sign-off that he “did this show for the fighter pilots out there, the military people and the elder geezers like me, who would just like to see an elder come back week after week.” The 32-year-old Ochocinco, who dances with Cheryl Burke, is still in the mix and joked that his outfits will continue to get more outlandish as the weeks continue. “Everybody can’t pull off these shiny suits. Everybody can’t do it. I’m one of the few. What do you expect? It’s me! I’m crazy, you know,” the Miami native laughed at the launch of OCNN, his athlete-driven social-media network in conjunction with Motorola. “It’s going to get worse and worse. I’m representing Dade County in a different way.” How do you think Ochocinco is doing on “Dancing With the Stars”? Were you sad to see Buzz leave the show? Let us know in the comments below! ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Sends Buzz Aldrin Home

The 80-year-old astronaut is eliminated, as Kate Gosselin narrowly escapes the ax. By Kelley L. Carter Ashly Costa and Buzz Aldrin hug fair-well after being voted off Photo: ABC Kate plus eight (other celebrities, that is) are sticking around. Despite finishing second-to-last on Monday night and getting unfavorable comments from the judges — “You had the look of the super bitch from hell,” Bruno Tonioli said to her the night before — Kate Gosselin remains on 10th season of “Dancing With the Stars.” It was 80-year-old former astronaut (and MTV icon) Buzz Aldrin , Monday night’s low-scorer, who was sent home. The results shocked the judges, who thought that the viewers at home would save him, despite not being the experts’ favorite. “I did this show for the fighter pilots out there, the military people and the elder geezers like me, who would just like to see an elder come back week after week,” Aldrin said in his sign-off. The first two safe celebrities of the night were soap stud Aiden Turner and ESPN’s Erin Andrews. Gosselin landed in the bottom three, but she and partner Tony Dovolani were able to slide by with the popular vote. Aldrin and partner Ashly Costa were saluted by the other contestants as they did an encore of their waltz. The second results show of the season featured a performance by country music superstar Reba McEntire, who added some down-home flavor to the show, singing while four cowboy-dressed dancers strutted in front of her. McEntire also revealed that her season favorites are Erin Andrews, Evan Lysacek and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger. “There are other bitter people backstage,” co-host Tom Bergeron joked in response.
