DWTS Ratings Trounce Big Finales

You sort of wanted the Law & Order and 24 finales to come from behind and apply a Nielsen piledriver to Dancing with the Stars , but they couldn’t even TKO The Bachelorette . L&O and 24 brought in 7.6 million and 9.3 million viewers, respectively, while DWTS and The Bachelorette premiere garnered 19.1 million and 9.9 million. Yep, with wins in all key demos , too. If Sam Waterston had busted into a frisky quickstep while S. Epatha Merkeson eased into the splits, they’d have had a chance. As such, no dice. Dun-dun . [ Zap2It ]

‘Lost’ Finale Wins Sunday Ratings Race

Sci-fi swan song beats ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ but fails to match the success of other hyped-up series closers By Josh Wigler Fans watch ‘Lost’ Finale Series in Times Square Photo: Getty Images On “Lost,” there’s a sequence of numbers that must be avoided at all costs: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42. But those numbers weren’t the most important digits when it came to Sunday night’s series finale — that all-important figure is closer to 13.5 million, the number of viewers who tuned in to the episode, appropriately titled “The End.” The pre-finale clip show, “Lost: The Final Journey,” garnered 9.8 million viewers, while the post-show edition of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” featuring interviews with castmembers and comedic alternate endings, attracted 3.4 million viewers. Although the 13.5 million fans who watched the finale made up a strong enough audience to propel “Lost” to its best-rated episode in two years and well past the season finale of NBC’s “The Celebrity Apprentice,” it still wasn’t a fantastic result, given the numbers the series was used to at its peak. During the show’s first season, “Lost” averaged nearly 16 million viewers and subsequently declined to 11 million during season five. The pilot episode of “Lost” yielded a massive 18.6 million viewers. Additionally, the “Lost” finale fell short in comparison to other similarly hyped series finales including “M.A.S.H.” (121.6 million), “Seinfeld” (76.3 million) and “Friends” (52.5 million), while barely edging out the finales for HBO’s cable offerings “The Sopranos” (11.9 million) and “Sex and the City” (10.6 million). Despite a relatively lackluster viewership, the series finale performed rather admirably, given that the show’s audience dwindled so dramatically over the course of its run, a fact that has been blamed on an increasingly complicated continuity and tough-to-crack story line. Why do you think the “Lost” audience dwindled over its six-season run? Let us know in the comments! Jay Leno’s ‘Tonight Show’ Returns To First Place

Jay beats ‘Late Show With David Letterman’ in his first week back, but the gap narrows in the second week. By Josh Wigler Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show” Photo: NBC Despite the strong showing of fan support for freshly ousted “Tonight Show” host Conan O’Brien, it appears that many late-night television viewers have settled their personal differences with NBC and Jay Leno. According to The Associated Press, Leno averaged 5.6 million viewers in his first week back as the host of NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” easily outmatching the 3.66 million that tuned in for CBS’ “The Late Show With David Letterman.” Letterman, who consistently beat O’Brien in ratings throughout the recently departed host’s run on “The Tonight Show,” famously finished in second place next to Leno before he vacated the talk-show chair for his failed prime-time experiment, “The Jay Leno Show.” Additionally, Leno’s return to late night proved beneficial to “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” Entertainment Weekly reports that the “Saturday Night Live” castmember-turned-host beat out CBS’ “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson” by a margin of 147,000 viewers. While Leno’s first week marked a decisive win for NBC over CBS, his second week back wasn’t quite as victorious. From Monday through Thursday of this week, Leno averaged 4.3 million viewers against Letterman’s 4 million, depicting a much closer race between the late-night hosts than Leno’s first week back behind the desk seemed to indicate. Leno returned to “The Tonight Show” last week following a widely publicized dispute between NBC and Conan O’Brien. In his first show following his return to the 11:35 p.m. time slot, Leno joked that he would hold on to the “Tonight Show” hosting gig “at least for a while.” Since his departure from “The Tonight Show,” O’Brien — who is contractually prohibited from making television appearances until September 2010 — has kept his presence intact by joining Twitter and announcing a national comedy tour that will take place from April 12 through June. Have you been tuning in to Jay’s “Tonight Show” return? Do you miss Conan? Let us know!

Kris Jenner to Scott Disick: Stop Sucking!

The day after Keeping Up with the Kardashians set an E! ratings record with 4.8 million viewers, Kris Jenner spoke to the network that made her family famous and focused on the unit’s most obvious black sheep: Scott Disick. The mother of Khloe and Kim Kardashian has made her feelings on Kourtney’s baby daddy clear, often mocking his status as an “entrepreneur” and urging Scott to find something he’s “passionate about.” You know, like feeding your children unhealthy weight loss supplements . “I want someone who’s dedicated to Kourtney and the baby, who has something to get up for every day – not just get up and go get a tan in the backyard,” Kris told E! News.”It’s not just success monetarily. It’s finding something you love to do. I’m as hard on Rob as I am on Scott. I set the bar really high and expect a lot out of my kids.” The show finished filming over nine months ago and Jenner says “a lot’s happened since.” This would include the raising of Mason Dash, Scott and Kourtney’s adorable son. Kris adds that “when you date one of my kids, you date all of us” and she means that literally: no way you’re taking anyone in that family out on a date without signing an E! contract.
