Lionsgate Wants Gary Ross, Slumdog Writer for Hunger Games Sequel Catching Fire

The jury’s still out as far as I’m concerned on whether or not director Gary Ross ( Seabiscuit ) was the right director to helm Suzanne Collins ‘s The Hunger Games , even with the mostly-satisfying first trailer debut earlier this week. Lionsgate, however, seems more confident in Ross, as they want him to return to helm the second Hunger Games installment, 2013’s Catching Fire , with writer Simon Beaufoy ( Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours ) reportedly in the running to script.

Natalie Portman to Assume Shirley MacLaine’s Apartment Role In Post-Baby Comeback

Nearly five months after giving birth to her first child, Natalie Portman returns to Hollywood tomorrow night to take part in Jason Reitman’s live reading of The Apartment at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The Oscar winner will play Fran Kubelik, “the fetching elevator operator” that Shirley MacLaine played (and earned an Academy Award nomination for) in the 1960 Billy Wilder film. J.K. Simmons, Ken Jeong, Nick Kroll, Mindy Kaling and Jake Johnson will round out tomorrow night’s cast. [ @JasonReitman , Vulture ]

Twit Wit: The 5 Best Tweets About Real Steel and Ides of March

You might’ve realized it by now, but Real Steel is a ridiculous premise for a movie. So ridiculous it worked , in fact. Twitter blew up this weekend with comments about Hugh Jackman’s and the sweet science of robo-jousting, and Ryan Gosling’s effectiveness in The Ides of March . We tally the best five tweets after the jump.

Corey Stoll on Midnight in Paris, Being Ernest Hemingway and the Audition of a Lifetime

If you haven’t yet seen Woody Allen’s fantastic Midnight in Paris , do yourself a favor and stop reading this now. (Then do yourself a bigger favor and go check it out.) Arguably the best way to enjoy the film is knowing little to nothing about its protagonist Gil (Owen Wilson) or his late-night exploits around the City of Light, which culminate in encounters with Gil’s literary and artistic heroes. Sort of . Corey Stoll knows what I’m talking about.

Mindy Kaling Explains Hollywood

A funny thing happened on the way to Mindy Kaling attempting to sell a rom-com in Hollywood: “The junior executives’ office at Thinkscope Visioncloud was nicer than any room within a fifty-mile radius of the Office studio. After I finished pitching one of my ideas for a low-budget romantic comedy, I was met with silence. One of the execs sheepishly looked at the other execs. He finally said, ‘Yeah, but we’re really trying to focus on movies about board games. People really seem to respond to those.’ For the rest of the meeting, we talked about whether there was any potential in a movie called Yahtzee! I made some polite suggestions and left.” [ The New Yorker ]

Mindy Kaling on The Office, Parodying Taylor Swift and Her ‘Bossy’ New Book

If there is one person that could succeed Tina Fey as Hollywood’s Wonder Woman of Comedy, it’s Mindy Kaling. The Dartmouth graduate — who plays, of course, Kelly Kapoor on The Office — is an Emmy-nominated writer, with credits on 18 episodes of the NBC series, plus the writer/director and star of the show’s spin-off web series, Subtle Sexuality . Oh, and on top of that , Kaling co-stars in the upcoming Natalie Portman rom-com No Strings Attached , is searching for directors for her own romantic comedy (co-written by fellow Office scribe Brent Forrester) and is feverishly writing her first book The Contents of My Purse for Random House. Just a few things.

Late Night Highlights: Justin Timberlake Gives Jane Lynch an SNL Crash Course

Jay Leno squandered a prime opportunity for Glee scoop by not asking Justin Timberlake about the rumors that he will play Mr. Schuester’s brother, all while Glee co-star Jane Lynch was sitting right beside him. Dope! Elsewhere, Glee star Cory Monteith talked about the technical difficulties of his upcoming solo, Stephen Colbert flirted with a 106-year-old virgin and The Office ‘s Mindy Kaling talked sex in Scranton.

Ellie Kemper on Being the ‘Next Mindy Kaling’ and Steve Carell’s Office Replacement

Within the past two years, Ellie Kemper has gone from a regular UCB performer to a series regular on The Office with a book deal and feature film roles in Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere and the Kristen Wiig-penned Bridesmaids . It has been a meteoric rise Kemper was happy to modestly recount with Movieline this week at NBC’ s TCA event — before diving into those Steve Carell replacement rumors and revealing the sisterly bond she shares with one of The Office ‘s writers.

Amy Ryan Returning to The Office Next Season

According to actress and writer Mindy Kaling that is: “We set her return up in the finale, so it would be the biggest [cop-out] of all time if we didn’t [follow through] on it.” Not that this should come as a surprise — with Steve Carell making season six his victory lap, what better way to send Michael Scott into the sunset than with Ryan’s Holly Flax by his side? Wica what , indeed. [ EW ]
