Lilith Fair Forced To Ax 10 Shows

Sarah McLachlan-headlined festival is struggling at the box office. By Gil Kaufman Sarah McLachlan at Lilith Fair in Calgary, Alberta, on June 27 Photo: David Bergman/ Getty Images In the midst of one of the cruelest summers the touring industry has had in decades, the Lilith Fair announced on Thursday that it was canceling 10 dates as a result of soft ticket sales. The female-centric tour, headlined by founder Sarah McLachlan, made its return to amphitheaters after an 11-year layoff on Sunday in Calgary, but co-founder Terry McBride admitted in a statement that slow box office has forced him to pull a number of upcoming dates. “We are in the midst of one of the most challenging summer concert seasons with many tours being cancelled outright,” McBride said in a statement. “Everyone involved with the tour would like to apologize to the fans and artists scheduled to play in these markets, and express appreciation for all the support for the festival’s return. Lilith remains the only tour of its kind, and we are confident that fans will be amazed by what each date has to offer.” The affected dates are: Salt Lake City (July 12), Montreal (July 23), Raleigh (August 4), Charlotte (August 6), West Palm Beach (August 10), Tampa (August 11), Birmingham (August 12), Austin (August 14), Houston (August 15) and Dallas (August 16). Because of the cancellations, some of the artists who were set to appear later in the tour may be performing in other cities. Fans are encouraged to check Lilithfair.com for updates on lineups. One of the most successful package tours of its era in the late 1990s (1997-1999), McLachlan and McBride decided to bring Lilith — which features a rotating list of headliners — back this year with a roster of tour veterans and a number of new stars. Among the acts taking part this year are: Erykah Badu, Rihanna, Gossip, Colbie Caillat, Cat Power, Selena Gomez, Corinne Bailey Rae, Indigo Girls, Kelly Clarkson, Jill Scott, Heart, Queen Latifah, Norah Jones, Mary J. Blige, Metric, Miranda Lambert, Sheryl Crow, Tegan and Sara, Sugarland, and Janelle Monae. The cancellations come during a summer in which the touring industry — which had record $4.4 billion grosses last summer — is struggling in the midst of a rash of concert cancellations and soft-selling tours. U2 were forced to postpone the latest leg of their 360 Tour when singer Bono suffered a back injury during rehearsals; Christina Aguilera pulled the plug on a summer tour promoting her Bionic album, citing scheduling conflicts; and Limp Bizkit called off its entire slate of amphitheater shows after complaining that they were not appropriate venues for the band. Maxwell also mothballed a leg of his summer tour just weeks before Simon & Garfunkel did the same due to a vocal injury suffered by Art Garfunkel. Related Artists Sarah McLachlan

CMT Music Awards Dominated By Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum

Kid Rock kept it relatively clean while hosting the show in Nashville. By Gil Kaufman Carrie Underwood at the CMT Awards on Wednesday Photo: FilmMagic You can be sure there was a censor somewhere in Nashville on Wednesday night sweating bullets during the . But, as promised, host Kid Rock kept things (relatively) clean during the annual fan-voted awards show, where Carrie Underwood , Keith Urban , Lady Antebellum and Miranda Lambert had big nights. It was a bittersweet celebration of sorts, as many of country’s biggest names gathered at downtown’s Bridgestone Arena less than a month after Nashville was devastated by floods that destroyed thousands of priceless instruments and put such city landmarks as the Grand Ole Opry under several feet of water. Rock made sure to keep things light, though, opening up the show with a warning that anyone who was even thinking of pulling and “Kanye West-isms … anyone thinking of grabbing the mic, myself or the Bo-Stevens will personally punch you in the mouth, all right?” The 39-year-old rapper and country dabbler made the bleep-button-pushers earn their pay early on, with a salty opening run through a medley of his songs “Cowboy,” “Bawitdaba” and “Good Ol’ Boys” that included surprise guest and awards-show recluse Hank Williams Jr., as well as Trace Adkins, Zac Brown, Martina McBride and Kellie Pickler. Though he was spotted doing shots backstage during the broadcast, it was Rock who proved to be the rule-minder during the show, at one point telling an audience member, “I know there’s no smoking! I got the memo. Calm down,” while, of course, smoking one of his beloved cigars onstage. And then there were some Buckle trophies to be handed out to Underwood for Video of the Year (“Cowboy Casanova”), Lambert for Female Video of the Year (“White Liar”), and Urban for Male Video of the Year (” ‘Til Summer Comes Around”). Underwood, who also won CMT Performance of the Year for “Temporary Home,” couldn’t thank fans enough during her acceptance speech for the Video of the Year prize, gushing, “Awesome fans … Awesome, awesome, amazing, awesome, awesome!” It was Urban who likely brought some tears to a few beers when he dedicated his win to wife Nicole Kidman, telling the flame-haired actress, “Baby girl, I love you so much,” and then nodding to the workers helping to clean up the BP Oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. “I want to send my deepest love and prayers out to all the families around the gulf, who are going through an insane time right now. We’ve never seen anything like this — emotions I can’t even find words for as I watch this thing happening on TV.” Lady Antebellum, whose Need You Now is the year’s best-selling album to date, won for Group Video of the Year for the clip for the album’s title track. They also landed on the receiving end of one of Rock’s sharpest lines of the night. “Lady Antebellum is like the hillbilly Fleetwood Mac,” he joked. “But I suspect they don’t do drugs or sleep with each other.” Antebellum member Dave Haywood was typically humble in accepting their award, saying, “Tonight’s all about the fans! Thank you, fans!” Veteran pair Brooks & Dunn took Duo Video of the Year for “Indian Summer,” up-and-comer Luke Bryan snagged Breakthrough Video of the Year for “Do I,” and Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins got some more love for their rough and rugged hit “Hillbilly Bone,” which earned a Buckle for Collaborative Video of the Year. Though she didn’t win any awards, Taylor Swift helped present one with Faith Hill. “Jersey Shore” stars Snooki and the Situation joined celebrity chef Paula Deen to hand out a Buckle. And the crowd got a surprise when “Saturday Night Live” cast member Kenan Thompson showed up in a green dress and red wig to reprise his bizzaro Reba McEntire impersonation. He was confronted on stage by the real McEntire, wearing a similar dress. When she wondered what he was doing there, he replied, “I’m Reba! … R to the E to the B to the A. Reba!” Underwood, Urban (joined by John Mayer), Lambert, Toby Keith, Lady Antebellum, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley and the Zac Brown Band all performed on the two-and-a-half-hour show. Rock ended the ceremony with his signature music biz words of wisdom: “I’d like to leave on this note right here: As a music lover, if it looks good, you’ll see it. If it sounds good, you’ll hear it. If it’s marketed right, you’ll buy it. But if it’s real, you’ll feel it.” What was your favorite moment of the CMT Awards? Talk about it in the comments. Miranda Lambert: Engaged to Blake Shelton!

Country hotties Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert are engaged! He popped the question May 9 – and in classy fashion for a self-proclaimed “hillbilly” singer. “He called my dad and got his blessing first,” Lambert told People of her boyfriend of five years. “That was so Southern and old-school and just perfect.” Equally perfect: The diamond-and-platinum ring he picked out. “I was so proud of him,” says Lambert. “He knew exactly what I would’ve wanted but it’s so much more perfect than I could have picked out myself.” The setting for the proposal was distinctly down-home – in the woods near Lambert’s Tishomingo, Okla., home, followed by a similarly informal party. The engagement is yet another high point in a stellar year for Lambert, who in January scored her first No. 1 single with “White Liar” and in April won Album of the Year and Top Female Vocalist at the ACM Awards. Congratulations to Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton!

‘Glee’ Madonna Soundtrack Debuts At #1 On Billboard Chart

All-AC/DC ‘Iron Man 2′ soundtrack debuts at #4, Justin Bieber falls to #3 in next week’s rankings. By Gil Kaufman Glee: The Music, the Power of Madonna Photo: Columbia Records The Gleeking of America continues unabated, as the latest soundtrack from the hit Fox series about singing teens will hit #1 on the Billboard 200 chart next week. The seven-track The Power of Madonna from “Glee,” featuring such hits as “Vogue,” “Like a Virgin,” “Like a Prayer” and “Express Yourself,” will top the charts with a modest 100,000 in sales, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. The second-highest debut of the week will belong to the all-AC/DC soundtrack to “Iron Man 2,” which will hit #4 (76,000), followed by the latest from flip-flop-loving beach bum Jimmy Buffett, the Wal-Mart exclusive Encores (#7, 31,000). The rest of the top 10 was relatively unchanged, with country trio Lady Antebellum continuing the strong run of Need You Now (#2, 83,000), riot-causing teen Justin Bieber falling two slots to #3 with My World 2.0 (81,000), Usher falling one with Raymond v Raymond (#5, 52,000), NOW 33 holding steady at #6 (37,000), Bieber’s debut, My World, creeping up two spots to #8 (31,000), the Zac Brown Band’s Foundation hopping six spots to #9 (29,000) and Lady Gaga dropping three to #10 with The Fame (28,000). The lineup was way different on the iTunes Album Chart , where Bullet for My Valentine’s Fever was in the #1 spot, followed by the “Glee” Madonna album, the Punk Goes Classic Rock compilation, Melissa Etheridge’s Fearless Love , Kaskade’s Dynasty , Lady Antebellum, Mary Chapin Carpenter’s The Age of Miracles , Usher, the deluxe version of Miranda Cosgrove’s Sparks Fly and Shania Twain: Greatest Hits . A couple of hard rockers just missed the winner’s circle on the Billboard tally, with Circa Survive debuting at #11 with Blue Sky Noise (28,000) and veterans Sevendust just behind them at #12 with Cold Day Memory (27,000). A handful of wins at the Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas helped boost Miranda Lambert’s Revolution by 23 spots, moving it to #13 (26,000, up 105 percent), even as trippy rockers MGMT took a serious 16-spot tumble in week two with their knotty second album, Congratulations (#18, 20,000, down 70 percent). Carrie Underwood also drafted on some ACM goodwill, moving up 17 slots to #21 with Play On after becoming the first woman in the awards’ history to win Entertainer of the Year two years in a row. Rap veterans Cypress Hill landed at #19 with their latest, Rise Up (18,000), which features cameos from Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, Everlast, Pitbull and Mark Anthony. Further down the line, the original cast recording of Green Day’s “American Idiot” Broadway musical landed at #43 (11,000) and British singer Kate Nash crashed the boards at #60 with her album My Best Friend Is You (8,000). Look for new releases next week from B.o.B, Melissa Etheridge and Hole, plus a new “iCarly” soundtrack. Related Artists Madonna AC/DC Justin Bieber Lady Antebellum Usher Zac Brown Band Lady Gaga
