The NAACP is some of the most fickle, wishy-washy, folks in the world when it comes to who they support and why… A week ago, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour had drawn the ire of the NAACP for insensitive comments about growing up during the 1960s civil rights era. Today, the potential 2012 GOP presidential candidate is being hailed by the nation’s oldest civil rights group as a “shining example” of a governor. Why the change? Barbour on Wednesday decided to free two sisters who have been imprisoned on life sentences since 1994 on armed robbery charges. The plight of Jamie and Gladys Scott had long been championed by the NAACP. Gladys Scott was released on the condition that she donate a kidney to her 38-year-old sister, who requires daily dialysis. In a statement, Barbour said, “The Mississippi Department of Corrections believes the sisters no longer pose a threat to society. Their incarceration is no longer necessary for public safety or rehabilitation, and Jamie Scott’s medical condition creates a substantial cost to the State of Mississippi.” As much as we’d like to “praise” Mr. Barbour for his gracious pardon, we can’t shake the feeling that the “substantial cost to the State of Mississippi” is the real reason why the Scott sisters were freed. In any event, congrats ladies, we showl is glad dat de white man had camed to save ya’ll…*SUPER side-eye* Source

Coons Of The Day: NAACP Has A Change Of Heart About Haley Barbour After The Release Of Imprisoned Sisters

Wow, the justice system is so generous: For 16 years, sisters Jamie and Gladys Scott have shared a life behind bars for their part in an armed robbery in which they pocketed just $11. Now, to share freedom, they must also share a kidney. Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour suspended the sisters’ life sentences yesterday on the condition that 36-year-old Gladys gives a kidney to Jamie, 38, who requires daily dialysis. The sisters were convicted in 1994 of leading two men into an ambush in central Mississippi the year before. Three teenagers hit each man in the head with a shotgun and took their wallets – making off with only $11. The Scotts were each convicted of two counts of armed robbery and sentenced to two life sentences. ‘I think it’s a victory,’ said the sisters’ attorney, Chokwe Lumumba. ‘I talked to Gladys and she’s elated about the news. I’m sure Jamie is, too.’ Civil rights advocates have for years called for their release, saying the sentences were excessive. Those demands gained traction when Barbour asked the Mississippi Parole Board to take another look at the case. The Scott sisters are eligible for parole in 2014, but Barbour said prison officials no longer think they are a threat to society and Jamie’s medical condition is costing the state a lot of money. Mr Lumumba said he has no problem with the governor requiring Gladys to offer up her organ because ‘Gladys actually volunteered that as part of her petition.’ He said it’s not clear what caused the kidney failure, but it’s likely a combination of different illnesses over the years. The Governor’s spokesman Dan Turner said that Jamie Scott was released because she needs the transplant. He said Gladys Scott will be released if she agrees to donate her kidney because of the significant risk and recovery time. Source

Mississippi rapper says Tip is ‘probably one of the strongest dudes that I ever met’ during ‘RapFix Live’ interview. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway David Banner Photo: Jonathan Goldner/ MTV News According to David Banner, T.I. is gonna get back up from his latest drama . During the latest installment of MTV News’ “RapFix Live,” the Mississippi MC’s sit-down was preceded by an exclusive interview with Tip about his music and how the trials of the past year have influenced his work. Banner, who is friends with T.I. and crafted his bouncy Trap Muzik single “Rubber Band Man,” said he’s more concerned with how the ATL spitter’s family is dealing with the superstar’s sentence, and remains confident Tip will snap back from his latest setback. “T.I.’s probably one of the strongest dudes that I ever met. Since the first day I met him, he was the shortest dude in the room but had his chest poked out the furthest [and] always kept his head up,” he said. Banner noted Tip’s resilience both as an artist and a businessman, one who engineered a fruitful deal with Atlantic after his debut outing with Arista went south. “Even when his first situation went down with the label, he totally pulled [himself] off the label and started back over again,” he remarked. “He’s been one person who’s been up against adversity all of his life.” Banner further commented that regardless of T.I.’s status as the King of the South, CEO of Grand Hustle or trap-music kingpin, behind the fame, he’s a fallible, flawed, flesh-and-blood human being — just like everyone else. “Everybody expects entertainers to raise [their] family. One thing that he said that really struck me is that we’re still men; there’s still certain repercussions as black men in America with everybody’s eyes being on you. From the streets to business, we’re still men, we’re not gods. We’re not perfect,” Banner continued. “The thing that America has done, every mistake that a young black man makes — and not that he couldn’t have made better decisions — but in life, period, everybody that’s behind these cameras that’s on the Internet or whatever, look at the mistakes you make every day in life. If you made one or two mistakes, and then every time you make one or two mistakes, everybody is on you, that’s a lot of pressure as a person.” What do you think of David Banner’s comments about T.I.? Mississippi MC and producer will talk about their joint LP, and an exclusive T.I. interview airs on Thursday’s episode. By Jayson Rodriguez David Banner Photo: Noel Vasquez/ Getty Images David Banner is not an MC to mince words, and the Mississippi-bred rapper will have plenty to talk about when he and producer 9th Wonder appear on “RapFix Live” this Thursday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. This week, “RapFix Live” will also feature an exclusive interview with T.I. that was conducted before the No Mercy MC was sent to prison last month . Watch a preview of the interview only on “RapFix Live,” then check back later on MTVNews.com and RapFix.MTV.com for more clips from the exclusive Q&A. As for Banner and 9th, the pair are set to release their first collaborative project, Death of a Pop Star, on December 21. The LP features production from the former Little Brother star and rhymes from Banner; Ludacris and Estelle also lend their talents to the project. Earlier this summer, Banner told MTV News partnering with 9th Wonder helped him feel rejuvenated about music. “It’s like we playing basketball overseas for the USA and we win the gold,” Banner said about their upcoming project. “That’s how I’m feeling. I’m coming right off of that and going into my next album.” How did these southern hip-hop stars come together? Why didn’t Banner take on any producing duties on Death of a Pop Star ? What do the two college grads think about President Obama’s performance so far? Ask Banner and 9th Wonder yourself by sending messages via Twitter to @MTVRapFix with the hashtag #rapfixlive or upload video messages to the pair at Your.MTV.com. The duo will sit down with MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway and answer your questions. They follow past “RapFix Live” guests such as Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Fabolous, Swizz Beatz and Soulja Boy Tell’em. What should Sway ask Banner and 9th Wonder? Share your questions in the comments! Photo via NOLA At first glance, you might not even notice the dead fish in the picture above — there are too many of them. But no, that’s not a gravely parking lot.
